The return of the plastic pitch

Artificial pitches could be on their way back, more than 20 years since they were banned. Wycombe Wanderers and Accrington Stanley have raised the idea in an attempt to reduce costs and it seems that many others would be happy to follow suit.

They were a major feature of football in the 80’s with QPR and Luton using them as well as Oldham and Preston, but they were banned in 1988 after complaints that they were causing injuries because they were solid and it was affecting the quality of football on show.

Pitches were set on top of concrete which made it very difficult to move about in comparison to traditional grass but thanks to the advancements in technology the current plastic pitches have padding underneath which makes the experience similar to grass, offering a softer experience under foot and in the tackle as well as a smooth surface that is not guaranteed outside of the country’s top grounds. Rubber pellets are also on the pitch to act like mud and increase movement.

Accrington owner John Heys said that it will cost about £500,000 to install but the savings on maintenance will make it worthwhile. He added: “There is an income to be gained from hiring the pitch out and money to be saved in maintenance costs and the fact that you can train on it.

“The community benefit is that you can get people down to the ground seven days a week rather than just 23 times a season for home fixtures.”

Opinion is divided on the issue, with people saying that it is unnatural and will cause injuries and others favouring the idea of having smooth, all-weather pitches and there is no reason why the game should not bring them back.

Admittedly it would take a while to get used to. Players might not be too keen to make the sliding tackle because of the surface but that is part of the settling in process. It would not cut the skin like they did before and after training on the pitch players would become more comfortable with it and be able to play their natural game. The fear that they may get injured turning or by getting their foot stuck in the ground is still the same as it is on grass and is an unfortunate part of football whatever surface is used.

Mick Rathborne, who played on the plastic pitch at Preston and worked as Everton physio after retiring said: “The new third generation pitches are light years away from the old plastic pitches.

“The new pitches with the millions of rubber balls are soft to run on, you can stop and turn very easily so there could be implications with preventing those types of injuries.”

[ad_pod id=’unruly’ align=’right’]

Introducing artificial surfaces is necessary to football because although clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea have an abundance of cash, many clubs in the lower leagues are struggling for funds and an opportunity to make savings should be welcomed. Wycombe owner Steve Hayes said that to maintain the grass pitch currently installed at Adams Park costs around £75,000 a year and although clubs would have to shell out to make the change, it would see a huge chunk of that money stay in the kitty. Rather than heating the pitch to prevent it being icy or covered in snow, a blanket would be all that is required and instead of cutting the grass it would only require sweeping every so often to get rid of some of the rubber. And take away the cost of replacing the turf once it gets cut up beyond repair and your team is already onto a winner.

And after the problems last winter with games being called off for frozen and snow covered pitches, a plastic surface would put an end to that so no longer would fans be travelling to the match only to hear it has been cancelled.

It would also mean that the team could train and play at the stadium rather than finding a traditional training pitch which again saves money and when the club are not using it other groups could get involved, creating possible opportunities for community groups and sport centres which could in turn lead to more people coming to the ground, meaning more money.

And for the traditionalist, who wants sexy football from one side and tough tackling from the opponent. The new surface would not have patches that cause the ball to bobble or bounce differently so that in itself will encourage passing football rather than the long-ball game that everybody loves to hate. Players will be more comfortable playing the ball along the ground because they know there is less chance for an unlucky break and slide tackles will still be possible on the natural-feeling pitch, so a non-contact game is not on the horizon.

Top-flight clubs in Italy, France, Switzerland and Russia use them without major problems and there is not a noticeably higher rate of major injuries in their leagues. Our players have experienced them in Europe and World Cup qualifying. Do not think of the old plastic pitches because they are as ancient as the Romans, plastic is the affordable and effective way forward.

What to do with Raul Meireles?

After Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles’s goal scoring exploits in January and February, there was justifiable praise for the Portuguese international’s performances. He scored some important goals in the Merseyside Derby against Everton as well as the winning goal against Chelsea away from home. After not scoring at all since his arrival from Porto in the summer, his goal against our Merseyside rivals was a start of a hot streak in front of goal which got many praising his contribution to the team.

Since then however, many Reds fans have noticed that the Portuguese star has gone off the boil slightly. Considering Meireles has never been a prolific goalscorer in his career, he was never going to become a 15 goal a season man overnight despite his good form in front of goal, but it has led some to ask what else does he contribute to the team other than goals?

I have heard suggestions that as he doesn’t tackle as well as the best defensive midfielders, or pass as well as Xabi Alonso used tp, he might not be as useful as some have stated over the past couple of months. I disagree with this assessment though as Raul has one fantastic attribute which will hold him in good stead for his entire Anfield career: his ability to make forward runs.

[ad_pod id=’unruly’ align=’right’]

You may say, well doesn’t every midfielder make forward runs? Well, no. Although there are many midfielders who like distributing the ball from deep with their passing range, or to run at opposition defenders with the ball, the ability to make a perfectly timed run from deep to carve open an opposition defence is a fine art, and Raul just has that knack. He will never control the midfield area with his passing range or go in with crunching tackles but he will always be a threat around the opposition penalty box.

Useful one-two passes, runs late into the box, venomous long range shots; he is in many ways similar to Steven Gerrard and it has caused a problem all season in my opinion as to where to play the pair. It hasn’t always been a problem this campaign as both have had injuries but when both are fit, Dalglish has tended to play Gerrard deeper while Meireles has played more advanced. Of course, this is when both players have played centrally as Meireles has invariably been moved wide right, and even wide left against Sunderland to ensure the midfield has enough midfield bite.

Especially with the return to fitness of both Suarez and Carroll, the temptation will be to play them as a pairing, leaving one less place in midfield. Against Sunderland, Meireles was moved wide left so he could be accommodated into a 4 man midfield, but he was noticeably less effective. The question in the long run will certainly be how to fit Gerrard, Suarez, Carroll and Meireles into the team without sacrificing their best attributes. The problem may become especially apparent if, as expected, Kenny Dalglish looks for wingers in the summer

I am big fan of Meireles and believe he will only get better with every game as he slowly adapts to the Premier League in his first year. We may begin to see the best of him next season, but the question remains that if he doesn’t play in the position that bests suits him, as an attacking central midfielder, will we actually see him at his best?

Steven Gerrard: I would boo too

Stand-in England captain Steven Gerrard has admitted that he would be booing if he was a spectator at the friendly international against Hungary on Wednesday evening.

The Liverpool midfielder accepts that he and his colleagues will kop some flak after their dismal displays at the World Cup finals and Gerrard is prepared to face the music.

He told reporters:"I'm expecting a mixed reaction. I'm sure there'll be boos, but we have to take it on the chin. We deserve it, we let them down.

"Hopefully, with time, we can show them we are a good team and that we're desperate to make them happy."

"I probably would boo.

"The manager spoke on behalf of all of us yesterday. For me there are no excuses at all. The simple message is we have to show how sorry we are by our performances on the pitch.

"We have to study where we went wrong on the pitch against Germany and try to put those things right. The mental side of things will only improve by winning games.

"I'm not going to lie and say it's difficult to be playing for England because it is. The results haven't gone the way we would have liked.

"But hopefully three or four games down the line we'll have given a bit of confidence back to the supporters and you guys (the press), because at the moment it is tough."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Martinez apologises on behalf of Alcaraz

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has revealed that Wigan equivalent Roberto Martinez has apologised to him over Antolin Alcaraz’s spitting incident.

The Paraguay international was sighted spitting at Molineux captain Richard Stearman in the dying moments of last Sunday’s Premier League clash, and has been handed a three-match ban by the FA.

McCarthy has criticised the South American for the act, but revealed that Martinez has apologised on behalf of the DW Stadium club.

“What happened is unacceptable. I have spoken to Roberto and he apologised on behalf of the club. I don’t think it is indicative of Wigan, of Roberto or Dave Whelan. They are lovely people, a lovely club, and I think he [Alcaraz] has just made a mistake,” McCarthy told The Guardian.

“I don’t know where it came from but he’s made a stupid mistake and got punished with a ban, and we all think that is right.

“Personally, I’d rather have a smack in the mouth than be spat upon. It’s the worst thing you can do to a fellow professional. He will be regretting it now and will have to take the consequences,” he concluded.

Henry unveiled by Red Bulls

Thierry Henry has completed his expected move to Major League Soccer with New York Red Bulls.

The 32-year-old former Barcelona and Arsenal striker has agreed a 'multi-year' contract and could now make his debut against Tottenham in a pre-season friendly for the Premier League club on July 22.

Henry was released by Barcelona last month and had been heavily linked with a move to New York.

"It is without question that Thierry Henry is one of the most successful and recognisable players over the past 15 years," said the club's head of global soccer Dietmar Beiersdorfer.

"We are thrilled that Thierry has decided to come to New York to help the Red Bulls compete for championships this year and for years to come.

"His international pedigree is second to none and he is a proven winner."

Henry, who was a member of France's World Cup squad in South Africa, scored 49 goals during three seasons with Barca after arriving in Spain as Arsenal's 226-goal all-time leading scorer.

"This marks an exciting new chapter in my career and life," he said.

Newcastle United fans the reason for excellent start

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has thanked the club’s fans for their support, and feels the St James’ Park faithful are one of the main reasons for the Tyneside outfit’s excellent start to the season.

The Magpies are unbeaten in their first nine games, and can move into third place in the standings if they remain undefeated after the game with Stoke on Monday night.

Despite losing the likes of Joey Barton, Jose Enrique and Kevin Nolan over the summer, the Geordies have excelled, and Pardew has praised the supporters for their part in the team’s success.

“I think it’s very important that you have a good feeling running through the club, from the terraces right down to the pitchside,” he told Sky Sports.

“I think there’s a trust from the terraces in what we’re doing, especially in the players that we have.

“That trust has come out in a number of areas this year that have seen us get victories. And you can’t do that without the tremendous backing that we’ve got here.

“I think they see that we’re trying to do it the right way, approaching the game in the right style, and hopefully producing football that makes them want to come back every week.

“The support helps when bad days come along, and they will come along. We’re going to have some tough days and if they trust that the management and the players are doing everything to try to win the game then they’ll stay with you,” he concluded.

Premier League: Blackpool 1 Chelsea 3

Frank Lampard hit two second half goals as Chelsea maintained their recent revival with a comfortable 3-1 victory at Bloomfield Road.Skipper John Terry headed Chelsea into a deserved lead midway through the first half before Lampard struck twice in four minutes – once from the penalty spot – to seal the victory.Jason Puncheon scored a late consolation for the Seasiders, who maintained their record of scoring in every home game this season. The only blip for Chelsea was that Fernando Torres again failed to find the target in his fifth game since making a 50 million pound switch from Liverpool.Blackpool were missing arguably their two most influential players, top scorer DJ Campbell and playmaker Charlie Adam, who were both suspended, while Didier Drogba started for Chelsea after his impressive cameo from the bench in the 2-1 victory over Manchester United. Both defences were on top in the opening exchanges with Blackpool keeper Richard Kingson doing well to beat Drogba as he threatened to latch on to Torres’ miscontrol, while at the other David Carney was twice muscled out when he took up good positions. The first meaningful chance led to the opening goal, Terry rising highest to head home Lampard’s corner in the 21st minute. They almost got a second within minutes when Torres’s turn and shot was blocked before Kingson tipped away Jose Bosingwa’s 20-yard curler as it headed for the top corner.Blackpool almost scrambled an equaliser on the half hour when Puncheon bulldozed through David Luiz and hit a low shot which Petr Cech was relieved to see come back of the post after he made a mess of what should have been a comfortable save.Drogba limped off shortly after the break and his replacement Salomon Kalou was soon in the action, drawing a foul from Ian Evatt to earn Chelsea a penalty. Lampard rolled the ball in from the spot sending Kingson the wrong way, and the midfielder got his second just four minutes later to kill off the game when he ran onto Kalou’s throughball and neatly
sidefooted past Kingson.Torres then went close to his first goal for Chelsea but shot straight at substitute keeper Mark Halstead, after Kingson was taken off with an injury.Blackpool got a consolation goal four minutes from the end, Puncheon firing low across Cech minutes after Matt Phillips dragged a similar chance wide.

The top TEN Celebrity Arsenal fans

There are a number of celebrities out there who follow Arsenal football club. The ten featured in this article ultimately made my list of the top 10 celebrity fans who are fully fledged Gooners, enjoy:

10. Jay Z

The 40-year-old rapper has been an Arsenal fan for a number of years, but many questioned his love for the club when he was photographed as a guest of Manchester City when they beat the Gunners 4-2 at the City of Manchester Stadium last season. However, last month Jay Z cleared up any allegations that he was nothing but a gooner. Speaking to Arsenal Magazine the hip-hop star said:

“After that game the press started reporting that I was a Manchester City fan, I am really glad all that has been cleared up and that everybody in the UK knows that I am an Arsenal fan.”

The lyricist was made aware of the Gunners and took a shine to them when Thierry Henry used to play for them, he goes on to say:

“It was about five years ago now, when Thierry Henry was at the club, I saw him play and I just thought he was an amazing player. Ever since then I have been a big fan of the club.”

Jay Z has stated that he would love to hook up with the Arsenal squad for lunch and has also openly invited them to attend his next gig in London, whenever this maybe. Beyonce’s other half has also hinted that he may invest some of his £500 million earnings in the club should the opportunity arise in the near future. 99 Problems but his love for Arsenal isn’t one of them.

9. Spike Lee

The American film director, producer, writer and actor is an Arsenal fan, and a big one at that. The 53-year-old is known to wear the Arsenal Jersey whilst on set and is a close and personal friend of former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry. Spike Lee has attended matches at Highbury in recent years as well as a few games at the Emirates Stadium last season, and has a very good knowledge of the game to say the very least. Spike is a Gooner.

8. Dara O’ Briain

The 38-year-old award winning Irish comedian and television presenter is a very keen and avid Gooner to say the very least. The ‘Mock the Week’ and ‘Have I Got News for you’ presenter is a season ticket holder at the Emirates and in his spare time does stand up comedy gigs around the nation. O’ Briain is also a columnist for the Guardian where, like Piers Morgan does for the Daily Mail, expresses his views on his team. He surely deserves to be in this list right?

7. Colin Firth

Reports in the past suggested that the British film and TV actor who starred in the most famous football film ever (in my opinion) ‘Fever Pitch’ was either a Southampton of Arsenal fan. His first and only match before making the hit movie was in fact Hull City against Southampton in 1976 which proposed he may have supported either one of the teams. However, since taking the role as crazed Gooner Paul Ainsworth in Fever Pitch, the 49-year-old hardly ever misses an Arsenal home game when he is in residence in his Hackney flat. Nick Hornby (director of Fever Pitch) is worth a mention for Firth being converted into Goonerdom as it seems as if his film turned the actor into a loyal Arsenal supporter since 1997 to this present day.

6. Frankie Dettori

Dettori is known to be a big follower of the North London club. The 5’ 4’’ Italian jockey who has won every British classic as well as countless amounts of races around the world is as much into Arsenal football club as he is in his own profession. In 1996 Dettori spoke to the Telegraph about his love for Arsenal:

“I’ve been an Arsenal fan since I came to England. I was interviewed by Julian Wilson for the BBC just after I had my seventh win in one afternoon at Ascot, and I asked how Arsenal had done. When I heard that they’d won, it made the day all the more special.”

Dettori arrived in England in 1985, which would make him a fan of the Gunners for 25 years now…a loyal fan indeed.

Click on page 2 to see the top 5

5. Piers Morgan

Mr. Morgan has not kept it a secret that he is in fact a Gooner. The Daily Mail columnist loves to express his views on what Wenger must do in order to get Arsenal going into the right direction. At times reading his work, you get the feeling that Morgan actually knows what he is talking about. The former Daily Mirror and News of the World editor also enjoys great TV success with ‘Pier’s Morgan’s Life Stories’ and acts as a judge for the popular talent show ‘Britain’s got talent’.

4. Bradley Walsh

For the 2002 F.A Cup final where Arsenal took on Chelsea at the Millennium Stadium, Sky Sports invited Walsh to take part in the infamous fan zone booth and commentate alongside Tim Lovejoy. Walsh represented his beloved Arsenal whilst Lovejoy was backing his Blues. Arsenal won 2-0 that day with goals by Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljungberg. The most memorable part of listening to the two was when Ray Parlour picked up the ball in the centre of the park and headed for goal. Lovejoy commentated ‘Oh no he’s put him through…oh It’s alright it’s only Ray Parlour’ and before he knew it the Arsenal man curled a 25-yard beauty into the top corner sparking Walsh to go absolutely bonkers and replied back to Lovejoy by saying ’that is Ray Parlour, that is the goal of the season, that is a goal’. It was one of the biggest clangers in the history of commentary by Tim Lovejoy, but a hilarious one at that which started an ‘it’s only Ray Parlour’ trend. The 50-year-old English comedian and actor is a legendary Gooner fan just for that.

Check out Walsh’s commentary, its hilarious:

3. Kevin Costner

The famous actor best known for his role in the 1991 hit movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, confessed his love and support to Arsenal football club when he was invited to watch the Gunners play during the making of the film:

“When I came over and made Robin Hood I got a chance to go see a football game and it happened to be Arsenal. They invited me as their guest and I didn’t know what to expect, and I was blown away. I didn’t realise how emotional it can be in the stands. I didn’t realise that people sang and did all that and I was moved by it.”

Kevin Costner remains a loyal fan to this day and a very famous one at that.

2. Alan Davies

Alan Davies had to make the list for sure. The British comedian, writer and actor is best known for starring in the mystery series ‘Jonathan Creek,’ is an enormous Arsenal fan and merits this by being a season ticket holder at the Emirates Stadium. The 44-year-old Brit also hosts the greatly popular ‘It’s up for grabs now’ podcast, which takes a jocular look at what’s going on in the club. A definite top 10 celebrity Gooner.

1. Nick Hornby

Nick Hornby is a well known author who is particularly identified with his football novel ‘Fever Pitch’ which was released in 1992. It tells the story of the author’s relationship with football and his loveable Arsenal football club. The story behind the novel was converted into a movie which was produced and directed in 1997 By Hornby himself, and has been a major hit with many males up and down the country for several years now. A truly iconic Arsenal and football fan, who deserves a lot of praise for persuading many with his book and film to get involved with the beautiful game.

"Arsenal is the perfect home for me right now"

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has spoken of his loyalty to the club, and stated that he has no plans to leave North London.

The playmaker, who is currently on the sidelines due to an ankle injury, has been linked with a transfer to Manchester City after Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy’s summer moves to the Etihad Stadium.

Despite this, the England international has spoke of his desire to stay at The Emirates.

“No disrespect to Manchester City but Arsenal is the perfect home for me right now,” he told Mirror Football.

“Some players have got their price, but to be honest that’s not the way I look at the game. All I think about is playing at the highest level and in the top competitions, so I can measure myself against the best in the world.

“I really am happy at Arsenal at the minute. Obviously I want to win things [but] I want to do it with Arsenal. I have been at Arsenal since I was nine and I have grown to love the club.

“There are players there who have been there as long as me and I think we are starting to build something special there with the likes of Emmanuel Frimpong and players I have seen in the youth teams coming through. In a couple of years, they’ll be big players for us.

“Obviously I want to play in the Champions League and that is the aim for Arsenal and everyone at the club. We’ve started a bit slowly but we still feel we can finish in the top four,” he stated.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has come under-fire in the press, which Wilshere feels is unwarranted and unfair.

“We do get a harder time from the critics than most teams, but we haven’t won anything for six years and that’s not good enough for Arsenal.

“It is harsh, though, especially on the boss. He has been there for 15 years and been great for Arsenal. The criticism Arsene gets is a joke,” he concluded.

Wilshere is expected to be out of action for another couple of months, with a strict rehabilitation process underway in his search for fitness.
