Wolves winger Neto enjoys exciting performance against Newcastle

Pedro Neto played well despite Wolves’ draw with Newcastle United on Saturday.

On the chalkboard

Leander Dendoncker’s goal earned Nuno Espirito Santo’s side a point after Miguel Almiron had opened the scoring early in the first half.

While their front three drew a blank, Wolves can take heart from Neto’s performance against Steve Bruce’s men.

Per WhoScored, the 19-year-old had 53 touches of the ball, more than both Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore.

He had a passing accuracy of 85% from 33 total passes and completed three dribbles, a number only bettered by Traore for Santo’s side.

Neto also won one aerial duel and took two corners, with both being accurate.

This was a performance from the teenager that saw him attempt to get on the ball and make things happen prior to his 85th-minute substitution.

Call yourself a Wolves expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Hitting his stride

Neto has taken some time to adjust to life at Molineux.

He was signed in August from Lazio but he did not complete the full 90 minutes in the Premier League until December, in the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.

He has also started just four games in the top-flight but one feels that he is finally reaching a point where he is making the left flank his own in the absence of the injured Diogo Jota.

Neto scored against Watford last time out, his first league goal for the club, and was again an exciting, ebullient presence on Saturday.

If he can continue in this vein, adding consistency and regular goals to his game, he will be a star in the Midlands.

Meanwhile, one Wolves man holds their top-six push in his hands!

Mbwana Samatta or Keinan Davis are in line to start Aston Villa’s next game, says Gregg Evans

The Athletic journalist Gregg Evans has said that he expects either Mbwana Samatta or Keinan Davis to start Aston Villa’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Leicester City on Tuesday night.

Samatta, who recently secured a move to Villa Park from Genk, was not available to make his debut against Watford in the Premier League last week having not been registered in time.

As a result, the centre-forward is still waiting for his first appearance in Villa colours, although Evans has suggested that the 27-year-old is in line to start against Brendan Rodgers’ side in Tuesday’s cup fixture.

That said, The Athletic journalist has suggested that Davis is also under consideration to make the starting XI having recovered from a hamstring problem.

The 21-year-old forward has not played since the end of October, though, and it would therefore be slightly surprising if he was thrown into the side against the Foxes.

Did he really play for us?! No Villa fan has managed to name all of these obscure Villans….

The last-four clash is delicately poised following a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the King Power Stadium earlier this month.

Evans’ tweet on the subject can be seen below:

Meanwhile, a number of Villa supporters have had their say on a report linking their club with a move for this former Liverpool ace.

The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland was also present at the press conference and quoted Ancelotti as giving a little more detail on their pursuit of acquisitions.

Everton are currently 12th in the Premier League, though they are just four points behind fifth-placed Manchester United, while they sit seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Ancelotti’s side face Watford on Saturday prior to a clash with Crystal Palace and a possible reunion with Tosun.

Meanwhile, one Everton man is not worth the £85m bid for him, according to one pundit!

Leeds must put Jean-Kevin Augustin on the bench this weekend

Jean-Kevin Augustin still hasn’t appeared in a matchday squad at Leeds United.

The striker joined in late January, and despite the fact United have played twice since his arrival we’re yet to see his name on a team sheet.

Marcelo Bielsa’s press conference on Thursday gave us a little bit of insight into why he hasn’t played yet with the Argentine hinting that his fitness isn’t up to scratch.

That’s absolutely fair, the manager himself stated that he’s played just three full games in the past 12 months, but you can’t help but feel Bielsa is making the wrong call in leaving him out completely.

Having Augustin on the bench would be advantageous even if he wasn’t fit enough to start. After all, being able to throw on a striker who has scored goals in the Champions League is a great option to have with 10 minutes to go. However, that wasn’t the case for the Argentine last weekend as he didn’t have the Frenchman to call on when they were 1-0 down at home against Wigan.

Therein lies the problem. It’s hard to imagine that Augustin is that unfit that he wouldn’t manage a small cameo from the bench in a game that Leeds are chasing – at the end of the day, he’s still a professional footballer, and he has been for years.

While his fitness standards may not be as high as Bielsa had hoped, he’s surely still in a good enough condition to come off the bench after playing 45 minutes for the U23s earlier in the week.

The Argentine went on to say at the press conference that fans are losing confidence in the team. That’s a perfectly fair comment after seeing supporters bash Helder Costa and Patrick Bamford on social media lately. However, certain individuals also weren’t happy with Bielsa for one reason.

They were furious when Augustin was left out last weekend, and the first question asked on The Phil Hay Show this week (7/2/20 6:00) was surrounding when Augustin is going to play.

One way to restore a bit of a buzz amongst the fanbase is to put Augustin on the bench on Saturday, it would immediately alleviate a number of concerns and calm the supporters before kick-off.

In other news, Leeds’ recent woes may be down to two things that have changed.

Wolves fans discuss Ruben Neves after Man Utd stalemate

Wolves faced Manchester United for the third time in just a month on Saturday evening as Nuno Santo’s side continued their poor run of form in the Premier League.

Although a 0-0 stalemate is a relatively decent return against a side like the Red Devils, it is now just one win in their last six outings.

The spotlight was mainly on the home side as their marquee winter signing, Bruno Fernandes, as he made his debut following a £47m switch from Sporting Lisbon last week.

Following the match, Wolves supporters were left debating how much their Portuguese midfielder was worth in Ruben Neves.

Here are some of their valuations…

Several fans were of the opinion that the 22-year-old was “priceless,” presumably meaning that they wouldn’t sell him for any fee offered whilst other shouts ranged from £65m to as high as £200m.

Currently, according to Transfermarkt, Neves is valued at £45m – some £30m more than what the west Midlanders reportedly paid for him back in the summer of 2017, per ESPN.

As these comments came following their draw at Old Trafford, other members of the Molineux faithful used it as an opportunity to compare the midfielder to his opposition…

One supporter claimed he is a better player than Paul Pogba while another added that he would be worth £80m as he’s much better than Fernandes.

Per SofaScore, Neves picked up a higher rating (7.7) than his national counterpart (6.8) and also recorded a better passing success rate (82%) and substantially kept hold of possession more with Fernandes losing the ball 23 times compared to the Wolves man’s nine.

Pogba was not involved due to injury.

Although, not everyone was waxing lyrical about Neves…

“Inconsistent” was one word used to describe the 22-year-old with a further member of the travelling support suggesting that he would need to add more goals to his locker in order to be worth upwards of £100m.

What could’ve been… Can you name the clubs these football legends almost joined?

Celtic fans split in their judgement of Vakoun Bayo

It is safe to say that game time has been hard to come by for Vakoun Bayo this season, as before the Scottish FA Cup tie against Clyde, he had made two starts and 11 substitute appearances in all competitions.

Therefore, he will have been keen to make his mark when coming on for Patryk Klimala with a quarter of an hour left on the clock.

He did exactly that, scoring the Bhoys’ third in a 3-0 win, but fans were still split in their thoughts about his performance.

Some fans were very pleased with the 23-year-old, specifically due to the fact that he had been able to get his name on the scoresheet, with one fan stating “that’s how you do it”.

There were also comparisons made with Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths following the movement that earned him the chance.

Only real Celtic fans will get 100% on the Ultimate Hoops quiz. Test your knowledge below…

That may be a bit premature, but there is a chance he may have got himself ahead of Patryk Klimala in the pecking order – or at least put himself in the forefront of manager Neil Lennon’s mind – having been the only one out of the pair to score.

However, not everyone was so impressed by him, with one fan suggesting that “he doesn’t cut it”, while another called him “absolute rubbish”.

There were even comparisons with various players who have flopped in the green and white hoops, indicating they may be giving up on him already.

In fairness, he has only contributed to goals in one other Celtic game, when he got a goal and assist against Partick Thistle.

Meanwhile, Celtic fans were swooning over one man ahead of the game.

West Ham set back can help Jeremy Ngakia

The 2-0 loss against Manchester City was just Ryan Fredericks’ second match back from a four-game injury, but the West Ham United right-back was forced off again.

It seemed fairly innocuous at first, but the 27-year-old’s collision with Rodri led to him being forced off with a shoulder injury, visibly in agony when he was on the floor.

ExWHUemployee has given a discouraging update on Fredericks’ situation when speaking about the scan that took place after, as he said: “Apparently the results of that do not look too good and he could be out a while.”

This will feel like a setback for the club, especially as Fredericks is their main right-back, having played 20 times throughout the current campaign.

Pablo Zabaleta was the man to replace him, something that’s a pretty concerning sign. He struggled significantly against Allan Saint-Maximin – the Frenchman made five dribbles when the pair met.

However, this could all mean that there is an exciting development for 19-year-old Jeremy Ngakia as he aims to get further first-team opportunities after making his debut against Liverpool.

The academy graduate gave a good account of himself during that game – especially when it’s considered that he was directly up against Andrew Robertson and Divock Origi. The teenager completed both of his attempted dribbles and was successful in all three of his tackle attempts.

He also continued that positive form against Stoke City U23s when the Hammers’ youngsters played at London Stadium, standing out alongside Bernardo Rosa.

Did he really play for us?! No West Ham fan has managed to name all of these obscure Irons signings….

The youngster showed quality and imagination with his passing, while also displaying his technical ability and confidence to produce pieces of skill when he had the ball at his feet.

He was a tireless worker who got up and down the pitch to make an impact in both halves, which paid dividends in the second half. His pressing was a vital part of West Ham regaining the ball back near the Stoke box, which led to Sean Adarkwa’s goal in the 2-2 draw.

Without the injury to Fredericks, it would seem fairly unrealistic to suggest that Ngakia could get more first-team starts this campaign, especially so due to the club’s current predicament. However, it now seems like it may now be a possibility for the teenager.

Meanwhile, fans’ fury shows GSB have made a real blunder.

Spurs fans fume over Anthony Joshua news

Tottenham Hotspur may not have won at the weekend, but they have just received one up on their north London rivals after it was announced that boxer Anthony Joshua’s next bout will be held at Spurs’ ground.

The Sun have revealed that the Englishman will fight Kubrat Pulev for his world titles on July 20th at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium despite a late bid from Arsenal to hold the battle at the Emirates.

Spurs were beaten by Chelsea in Saturday’s early kickoff, and it is clear to see that some are still reeling as they have chosen to unleash at the board as well as the chairman in reaction to this latest news.

Here’s what has been said…

One supporter was far from pleased with the news, claiming that Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy were probably dancing on a yacht whilst another believes the money they’ll receive from hosting such an event will not be reinvested in the playing squad.

Plenty of others offered up sarcastic responses as they see it as ENIC lining their pockets rather than benefitting the club as a whole.

A big issue that has been highlighted in recent weeks is their failure to secure a striker following the injury suffered to Harry Kane as Heung-min Son has since joined him on the treatment table, thus leaving manager Jose Mourinho without an out-and-out senior forward.

Which has led to some fans wondering if they could now buy one ahead of the summer transfer window and even if Joshua could play upfront for them…

Several more members of the Spurs fanbase were past the point of caring with one joking that they had finally won something as their last piece of silverware came in the 2007/08 season with the League Cup.

Steve Madeley issues update on WBA star Nathan Ferguson

West Brom are in a very healthy position as they embark on the Championship title run-in but now have their nearest challengers breathing down their neck.

Tonight they take a break from this with Newcastle United in town for the FA Cup fifth round and ahead of the match The Athletic’s Steve Madeley offered a Q&A where he spoke about the future of rising star Nathan Ferguson.

What’s he said?

The Baggies suffered their first defeat in seven matches on Saturday as Wigan Athletic clinched all three points, which meant Leeds were only one point behind them in second place.

Although both sides still occupy a substantial advantage over the playoffs.

Ferguson, who hasn’t featured since a loss to Cardiff in January, was on the verge of leaving for Crystal Palace last month before complications with his medical arose.

The deal fell through and he’s been left to see his contract out at the Hawthorns but Madeley cannot see him donning the navy and white stripes ever again. He said:

Mere formality

The 19-year-old has played 21 times for West Brom in the Championship, where his performances attracted interest from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid and Juventus.

But it was the Eagles that looked set to land him for £11m (add-ons included) before Deadline Day but the versatile defender has now had surgery to resolve the surprise knee issue.

The Palace chairman, Steve Parish, has since revealed his confidence of clinching the youngster this summer in an interview on their official club website.

Therefore, it seems highly likely that Madeley is right – we won’t see the Albion academy graduate feature ever again. It is surely a mere formality that he joins the Premier League outfit for compensation alone, meaning Slaven Bilic has missed out on a potential eight-figure fee to boost his coffers.

Lee Peltier was signed to replace him in January, and the Croatian is also able to call upon Dara O’Shea and Darnell Furlong at right-back with Kieran Gibbs and Conor Townsend holding fort on the other side.

For away day veterans only: Can you name all of these defunct stadiums?
