Lockie Ferguson in doubt for Champions Trophy and Pakistan tri-series

The NZ quick injured his hamstring while playing in the UAE’s ILT20

Deivarayan Muthu07-Feb-2025New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson is under an injury cloud, ahead of the the tri-series in Pakistan and the Champions Trophy, after hurting his hamstring while playing in the UAE’s ILT20.In the first qualifier on Wednesday, captaining Desert Vipers against Dubai Capitals, Ferguson left the field without completing his allotment of four overs. There was only one ball left, in both his spell and the innings, and Mohammad Amir stepped in to deliver it.With Capitals needing one off the final ball, Sikandar Raza whipped Amir away for four to seal DC’s spot in the final. At the post-match presentation, Ferguson said, “just a little hamstring issue, unfortunate. Tough night; wish I could’ve bowled the last ball.”Ferguson underwent a scan the next day, according to New Zealand head coach Gary Stead, to determine the severity of the injury. New Zealand are still awaiting more details.”Lockie had a scan yesterday [Thursday] in the UAE,” Stead said on the eve of the tri-series opener. “We’ve got the images here and [we are] waiting for our radiologist to give us a report on the extent of it. Small hamstring injury, by the look of it, so we’re just waiting on a timeline of advice around that before we make a decision on whether Lockie travels here [Pakistan] or whether we do have to replace him for the Champions Trophy.”Ferguson is the most experienced quick in New Zealand’s squad for the Champions Trophy and his potential absence might disrupt their prep for the competition. Ben Sears, the Wellington tearaway, is working his way back from knee surgery, which had sidelined him for the Test tour of India and then the home series against Sri Lanka and England. Sears has played 17 T20Is and one Test so far but is uncapped in ODI cricket.Ferguson also missed the Eliminator against Tim Southee’s Sharjah Warriors in the ILT20 on Friday, handing over the captaincy duties to Sam Curran. During the toss, Curran stated that Ferguson was injured but didn’t reveal the extent of problem. In his first stint at the ILT20, Ferguson featured in only eight of Vipers’ 12 matches so far, with his workload being monitored.”We have tried to manage the players with rotation of quicks as much as we possibly can,” Tom Moody, Vipers’ director of cricket, said in the Vipers Voices podcast in January. “Lockie Ferguson, Mohammad Amir and Luke Wood, today, have all had a chance to rest and freshen up. But yes, it is a pretty tough schedule and there is an element of physical fatigue but probably, more importantly, mental fatigue.Lockie Ferguson captained Desert Vipers in the ILT20•ILT20″And there has not been that chance to really disengage and freshen up mentally. But that is the reality of tournament cricket. Everyone is trying to fit in a tournament within a certain window. And what comes of that is a pretty heavy schedule. And we came in expecting that, knowing that.”With the Champions Trophy less than two weeks away – New Zealand face Pakistan in the opener on February 19 in Karachi – Stead hinted that they would also rotate the seamers in the tri-series starting Saturday. New Zealand will also play a day game against South Africa in Lahore on February 10; all other matches in the tri-series are day-night fixtures.”I think it [selection] will depend on how people shape up, especially the bowlers after this first game and what their loads are like and then what the conditions are like as well,” Stead said. “It’s not quite as hot as you think it would be in Asia. It still gets pretty cold here in the evenings, so but if you bowl in the heat of the day, it might take more out of the bowlers. So, we will just manage that and be smart around it, understanding that the big tournament is the Champions Trophy. We want to make sure everyone is fit and firing for that.”New Zealand, though, will be bolstered by the return of Kane Williamson and Devon Conway who have both linked up with the national side in Lahore after finishing their franchise commitments with Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) and Joburg Super Kings (JSK) respectively. Seamer Jacob Duffy, who had already been added to the squad as standby for Ferguson, could be in the selection frame, if the senior quick continues to remain on the sidelines.Ferguson had originally been named in New Zealand’s squad for the Champions Trophy despite opting out of a central contract and despite having not played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup.While all eight teams have already named their Champions Trophy squads, they still have until February 12 to make changes if needed.

Newcastle signing Nick Woltemade names Arsenal star as his favourite player

When thinking about the best players to ever play for Germany, the likes of Toni Kroos, Manuel Neuer, Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Muller all spring to mind. The fact is, they have been blessed with outrageous talent in several different eras – winning four World Cups as a result.

The biggest name that stands out in the modern era is arguably Neuer. It’s rare when a goalkeeper is recognised as the best of his time, but the Bayern Munich legend has simply revolutionised his role. As the first real ‘sweeper keeper’, Neuer shocked opponents by positioning himself close to the half-way line and often taking risks as if he were in the No.6 role rather than between the posts.

Conceding less than a goal a game throughout his international career, it’s no surprise that Neuer has been showered with praise over the years. And that includes from Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who told reporters: “I’ve seen everyone. Sepp Maier, Oliver Kahn, and now Manu.

“I have the greatest respect for Sepp and Oli, they were absolutely world-class. But what Manuel has done is something else: he took the whole goalkeeping game to a new level.”

Meanwhile, if your preference is goals rather than those that prevent them, then Muller stands out for Germany. Nicknamed Der Bomber by fans thanks to his ability to tear defences apart, only Miroslav Klose has scored more goals for Germany than Muller.

So, there’s certainly plenty of players to choose from in Germany’s illustrious history. You could do a lot worse than simply picking any of the players involved in their 7-1 thrashing of Brazil in 2014, that’s for sure. But that didn’t stop recent Newcastle United signing Nick Woltemade from naming a shock Arsenal player as his favourite German player of all time.

Nick Woltemade: Kai Havertz is my favourite German player

After putting pen to paper to join Newcastle, Woltemade shocked everyone by naming Kai Havertz as his favourite German player. The Arsenal forward was selected over the likes of Klose, Muller and Neuer, with the Newcastle star revealing that he’s a big fan of his compatriot in unexpected fashion.

Whilst Havertz made the cut above several legends, Woltemade may simply enjoy the thought of playing alongside the Arsenal man. If both enjoy impressive campaigns, they could provide Julian Nagelsmann with quite the strike partnership.

Germany are due some success if history is anything to go by too. They haven’t won a major trophy since the 2014 World Cup and the pressure is on ahead of next summer.

With 20 goals and 17 assists in just 55 games for his country, there’s every chance that Havertz will play a large role in Germany’s attempt to get back to the top of world football. Whether his biggest fan in Woltemade is alongside him remains to be seen, however.

Wolves now make approach to sign "fabulous" £17m tough-tackling midfielder

Wolverhampton Wanderers have now made contact over a deal for a “fabulous” midfielder, who is wanted by a whole host of Premier League clubs.

Wolves looking to strengthen amid disappointing start

Wolves’ start to the new Premier League campaign has been far from ideal, losing 4-0 at home against Manchester City in their opening match, before falling short once again in a 1-0 defeat at AFC Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

Vitor Pereira has since made it clear he still wants to make several new additions to the squad, with the manager confirming the club is currently working on a number of deals.

One position in which Pereira clearly remains keen on strengthening is central midfield, with a big offer recently being submitted for Barcelona’s Marc Casado, but the 21-year-old is not the only La Liga midfielder on the shortlist…

According to a report from AS (via Sport Witness), Wolves have now made contact over a deal for Getafe’s Christantus Uche, who is attracting widespread interest from the Premier League, with Sunderland, Burnley and Leeds United also keen.

The Spanish club are planning to cash-in on Uche this summer, and they are willing to sanction a departure for €20m (£17m), although the asking price could drop to €15m (£13m) prior to the September 1st transfer deadline.

Pereira's very own Neves: Wolves plotting £26m move for "total leader"

Wolverhampton Wanderers could win Vitor Pereira his own Ruben Neves by signing this £26m ace.

ByKelan Sarson Aug 21, 2025

The Old Gold are yet to table a bid for the midfielder, and it is unclear whether they have been in contact with his agents, Getafe, or both parties, but there is certainly interest on their behalf, and there are plenty of signs he could be a solid addition to Pereira’s squad…

"Fabulous" Uche could take Wolves' midfield to next level

It would be fair to say Jean-Ricner Bellegarde struggled against Bournemouth on Saturday, with the midfielder being substituted at half-time after making the error that led to Marcus Tavernier’s goal, while he’s also received criticism for some of his displays last season.

As such, it is little wonder that Pereira wants to bring in a new midfielder before the deadline, and the “fabulous” Getafe star could be a fantastic option, given that he is a well-rounded midfielder, capable of making an impact at both ends of the pitch.

That is evidenced by the Nigerian’s performance across several key metrics over the past year, particularly impressing with his tackling ability.

At 22-years-old, Uche is at a good age to be a long-term success at Molineux, and his performances over the past year suggest a £17m price tag would be very fair, so it would be a real bonus if the asking price drops even further before the deadline.

Not just Tel: Spurs dud now looks totally finished under Thomas Frank

Tottenham Hotspur have entered a new phase in recent months after Thomas Frank took the reins following Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

The Aussie ended his spell in North London on a high after winning the Europa League, but it was their lowly Premier League finish which brought his time at the club to an end.

Such a responsibility now falls to the Dane, with the 51-year-old tasked with building on their recent European success and making the side a force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham Hotspur managerThomasFrankcelebrates after the match

The board handed the new boss over £100m to make the additions he craved during the summer, subsequently strengthening various areas of his first-team squad.

However, one summer signing in the form of Mathys Tel could also be heading for the exit door – after the latest development coming out of the Lilywhites camp.

Mathys Tel’s current situation at Spurs

After spending the second half of last season on loan at Spurs, the hierarchy decided to make Tel’s transfer permanent – costing around £30m from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

At just 20 years of age, the Frenchman was undoubtedly brought in as an immediate and long-term option for Frank in the club’s attempt for future success.

However, it’s unclear how much of a part he will play during the 51-year-old’s tenure after the winger was left out of the club’s 25-man squad for this season’s Champions League.

Upon his move to join the Lilywhites, not many people would’ve anticipated that he would be left out of the squad – especially considering his record of two goals in such a competition for Bayern.

The likes of Wilson Odobert, Brennan Johnson and new addition Mohammed Kudus were all selected ahead of him – prompting questions to be asked around his long-term future under Frank.

Tel himself spoke to the media in recent days, subsequently downplaying a move away, but there is no doubt he there will be a strong sense of disappointment felt by the youngster in the months ahead.

However, he may not be the only player to leave North London in the near future, with another first-team member also failing to make the desired impact since Frank’s appointment.

The Spurs player who could be finished alongside Tel

During the first three Premier League outings of the Frank reign, it’s clear to see the manager is capable of switching up his system – either able to use a back four or back five when needed.

The Lilywhites have won two of their first three outings, beating Burnley and Manchester City, before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth on home soil before the international break.

His appointment has allowed Richarlison to flourish, with the Brazilian netting two goals and an assist in his three starts – resurrecting his career at the club after falling down Postecoglou’s pecking order during the Aussie’s two years at the helm.

The same can’t be said for centre-back Ben Davies, with the Welshman being an unused substitute in all the league games to date, along with the Super Cup final defeat to Champions League winners PSG.

The 32-year-old made 28 appearances across all competitions throughout 2024/25, but it’s clear that minutes will be harder to come by in the near future.

Cristian Romero is already ahead of the former Swansea City star in the pecking order, forming an excellent partnership with Micky van de Ven at the heart of the backline.

The former of the duo was also named as the club’s new captain, further reducing the amount of game time Davies may receive during Frank’s spell at the club.

When called upon in recent times, his performances have also left a lot to be desired, leading to John Wenham labelling the centre-back as “terrible” in the defeat against Wolves a couple of years ago.

Given his age, he’s certainly ending the back end of his professional career, handing another reason for the hierarchy to cut loose and allow young talents to stake their claim.

Davies also earns a pretty penny, currently pocketing a steep £80k-per-week in North London – potentially saving a whopping £4.2m a year if he were to depart the Lilywhites.

There’s no denying the Welshman has been a tremendous servant, making over 350 appearances for the club after joining from Swansea back in the summer of 2014.

It may be a harsh decision to move Davies on, but ultimately, if Frank is to make the side into serial winners, brutal decisions will need to be made to enable further progression on the pitch.

Five-year agreement makes Abu Dhabi Afghanistan cricket's 'second home'

UAE will host all ACB training camps and all Afghanistan A and age-group matches for the next five years and, possibly, senior men’s bilaterals in the future

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Mar-20256:01

A deep dive into Afghanistan’s recent rise

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and the Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub (ADCSH) have announced a five-year “destination support agreement”, making Abu Dhabi the UAE host for all ACB training camps and all Afghanistan A and national age-group matches. As a possible next step in the arrangement, which runs till 2029, the ACB and Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) will work together for Afghanistan to use the venues in the UAE for hosting senior men’s bilateral matches as well. The update came after discussions between the ACB, the ADCSH, and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) in which the parties affirmed their “commitment to expanding cricket opportunities for Afghanistan’s players on the global stage”. A statement said that “the agreement also encompasses support towards ACB to facilitate the Board’s global operations and enhance player development pathways”.Matt Boucher, the chief executive of ADCSH, said, “Our facilities have already welcomed the world’s best players, and this agreement strengthens our strong commitment to nurturing global sporting and cricket talent and leveraging its capacity to be a force for societal good. We’ve loved hosting Afghanistan over the last couple of years and are pleased we can confirm Abu Dhabi as their second home.”Related

ACB chief executive Naseeb Khan said the opportunity to utilise “all the premium facilities available” in Abu Dhabi would be a boost for Afghanistan cricket, especially at the age-group level. Calling the development a “turning point” for Afghanistan cricket, Naseeb said, “The opportunity to now focus on Abu Dhabi as our training base and our home for age-group participation will allow us to elevate Afghanistan’s sporting success and build a strong national future for the game of cricket in our country.”The political situation in Afghanistan has meant that it has never developed as a touring destination for cricket teams, and the senior Afghanistan men’s team has “hosted” visiting teams at “home venues” in India – Dehradun, Lucknow and Greater Noida – as well as in the UAE. Abu Dhabi, in fact, has been the site of three of Afghanistan’s Test matches in the past, two in March 2021 against Zimbabwe and one in February 2024 against Ireland. They have hosted teams for ODIs and T20Is across India and the UAE as well.

Georgia Voll leads Australia A to victory with unbeaten century

Australia A 215 for 5 (Voll 137*, Villiers 3-28) beat England A 214 for 9 (Scrivens 43, Armitage 43, Ginger 5-35) by five wicketsGeorgia Voll continued her rapid rise with an unbeaten century for Australia A against their England counterparts, as her side secured a comfortable five-wicket win in the opening encounter of their three-match 50-over series at Cricket Central in Sydney.Voll, 21, missed the recent T20I leg of the tour – which England A won 1-0, after victory in the opening match followed by two wash-outs – as she was playing for Australia’s senior team in New Zealand, where she returned scores of 50, 36 and 75 in their three T20I victories. And having made her Test debut in Australia’s whitewash-sealing innings win against Heather Knight’s team in Melbourne in February, Voll continued her winning ways with a commanding innings of 137 not out from 122 balls, as England’s sub-par total of 214 for 9 was hunted down with 53 balls remaining.England A won the toss and chose to bat first, making a very solid start, particularly through Grace Scrivens and Hollie Armitage, who have shared the captaincy on the tour to date and who both made 43 from 59 balls. Earlier, Seren Smale had helped add 61 for the first wicket with Scrivens, and at 98 for 1 in the 21st over, England were on course for a competitive total. However, Queensland allrounder Sianna Ginger stepped up with a five-wicket haul to instigate a familiar subsidence from England’s lower-order. with the key wickets of Armitage and Bess Heath in the same over. Ella Hayward also claimed two wickets in two balls, as Mady Villiers was bowled immediately after Alice Capsey had fallen for 24.England’s bowlers put up a fight initially, with Australia wobbling early on 22 for 2. However, Voll found a solid ally in Charli Knott, who made 33 in a third-wicket stand of 91, before proving a cut above with 13 fours and a six in her unbeaten innings.Villiers atoned for her golden duck with figures of 3 for 28 in six overs, as England briefly threatened to rally at 125 for 5. But Tess Flintoff provided a powerful finish to the chase with 29 not out from 32 balls. The second match of the 50-over series will take place at the same venue on Friday.

Inter Miami player ratings vs. Chicago Fire: Luis Suarez impresses but Lionel Messi’s side stumble as Gregg Berhalter’s Chicago Fire secure playoff berth

The Chicago Fire are returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2017, but Inter Miami won't be thrilled the visitors' postseason ticket came at their expense in a 5-3 defeat at home. Luis Suarez rolled back the years with two goals, but his brilliance wasn’t enough to cover for the Herons’ season-long defensive frailties, as they shipped three before halftime.

Chicago made their presence felt early, capitalizing on poor set-piece defending in the 10th minute. Djé D’Avilla rose mid-air from a corner and powered a header past Oscar Ustari for the opener. Lionel Messi nearly equalized 11 minutes later with a perfectly struck free kick, but U.S. international goalkeeper Chris Brady was there to stop it.

Moments after, the Fire doubled their lead as Jonathan Dean latched onto an expertly weighted through ball to finish. Miami responded in the 39th minute when Tomas Aviles connected with a backheel from Gonzalo Lujan off a Messi corner to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Just as momentum seemed to swing, Rominigue Kouamé finished a counterattack off a Rodrigo De Paul mistake to restore Chicago’s two-goal advantage at halftime.

The second half was just as frenetic. Messi had a 1v1 with Brady, his shot rattling the crossbar, followed by Tadeo Allende’s blocked rebound attempt. Suarez breathed life into Miami’s comeback.

Alba found Baltasar Rodríguez charging toward the box, who fed Suarez for Miami’s second goal. Later, Suarez scored again from a low Alba cross to level the match at 3-3.

Chicago held firm, though, exploiting counters in the final 10 minutes. Justin Reynolds restored their lead at 4-3, and U.S. international hopeful Brian Gutierrez sealed the 5-3 win with a stunning 20-yard strike.

With the result, Miami now shift focus from the Supporters' Shield race to securing a home playoff spot. Manager Javier Mascherano’s side sit fourth in the Eastern Conference with 56 points and a game in hand.

Oscar Ustari (4/10):

Should have read Chicago's opening set-piece goal better and could have done more with Dean's goal. Not at fault for Chicago's final three goals, though.

Marcelo Weigandt (3/10):

Woeful defending on Chicago's opener on a set piece. He wasn't positioned right, and D'Avilla pounced with a textbook header. Offered little going forward, outside of two key passes, and was subbed off at half-time.

Tomas Aviles (4/10):

Was a defensive calamity on all three conceded goals in the first half. Rightly pulled at halftime, but neither he nor Weigandt were the only players at fault for Miami's first-half issues.

Gonzalo Lujan (5/10):

Was poor defensively in the first half, but teed up a perfect assist after getting Messi's corner to Aviles. Was slightly better in the second half, but that isn't saying much.

Jordi Alba (6/10):

Was defensively culpable as well, but was effective in attack as he helped set up Rodríguez'sassist to Suarez. He also directly assisted the veteran striker on the game's equalizer.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMidfield

Telasco Segovia (5/10):

Offered little in attack, despite completing 95.2 percent of his passes. Segovia has shown flashes this season, but he lacks the consistency and work rate that Diego Gómez – the man he replaced – delivered on a night-to-night basis last season. Pulled at halftime.

Yannick Bright (4/10):

An unusually poor outing from the Italian, typically the team’s unsung hero. He lacked his usual intensity and was caught ball-watching on Chicago’s third goal, failing to track back and stop the counterattack.

Sergio Busquets (5/10):

Also caught ball-watching on the goal, but helped Miami control possession for much of the match. Completed 92.1 percent of his passes and was reliable on long balls. An uneven performance from the retiring Spaniard.

Rodrigo De Paul (4/10):

Miami’s newest Designated Player looked out of sorts, turning in arguably his worst outing since joining MLS. He was again caught static on Chicago’s fourth goal, compounded by being played out wide by Mascherano. When deployed centrally – the role that earned him a spot on La Liga’s Team of the Season and is favored by World Cup-winning Argentina – De Paul looks world-class. Out wide, he appears lost. Miami need to find a solution here.

ImagnAttack

Luis Suarez (9/10):

Maybe the rest from a three-game suspension did him good? He's been almost unstoppable since his return, scoring three goals in three matches. He's one of the few Miami players who could hold their head up high on Tuesday night.

Lionel Messi (7/10):

Did his best, but looked absolutely exhausted considering Miami's run of matches. Hit a shot at the crossbar that 99 percent of the time he'd convert. A rare off-night by the Argentine.

Tadeo Allende (6/10):

Provided a spark, but will rue his rebound that rattled the post.

Ian Fray (5/10):

Started strong defensively but was unable to contain Chicago’s late second-half surge.

Baltasar Rodríguez (6/10):

Set up Suárez’s first goal, but otherwise had a quiet outing.

Noah Allen (5/10):

Largely ran cardio without making a decisive impact.

Fafá Picault (N/A):

Came on with six minutes remaining and didn’t have enough time to influence the game.

Javier Mascherano (5/10):

Miami’s fatigue showed, but Mascherano will need to justify using De Paul out wide, despite his proven effectiveness centrally. The pairing of Lujan and Aviles also backfired. If the manager deserves any credit, it is that Miami mounted a spirited second-half comeback.

Man Utd star pressuring INEOS to sell him to Real Madrid in January window

Manchester United have the long term in their sights under Ruben Amorim, though they could now face a decision on whether to sell one of their prize assets to Real Madrid.

Man Utd look for gradual progression under Ruben Amorim

The Premier League campaign has ignited quiet optimism at Old Trafford over the direction Amorim’s young squad may be headed. However, there is still plenty of work to do before debates can take place over quantified success.

Taking difficult decisions to improve his pool of talent, Andre Onana’s departure to join Trabzonspor on loan has impressed supporters as the Red Devils streamline their squad appropriately for years to come.

Onana stated upon his arrival: “I am very happy. I can say that I am very happy. I am starting a new project, a new adventure for me, I am very happy to be here. This is a feeling that makes me so happy. I’ve never felt so much love from people around me.”

Feeling love in a new environment is important, something reflected in Rasmus Hojlund scoring his first goal for Napoli over the weekend, but Amorim has shown courage to discard big-money signings in pursuit of an improved product on the field.

In statistics recorded before Manchester United’s tussle with Manchester City, the Red Devils had taken the most shots and also faced the second-fewest efforts in the Premier League across their last ten top-flight matches, illustrating that slow change is taking place.

CSKA Moscow midfielder Kirill Glebov has his heart set on moving to Old Trafford, showing a buy-in from young players desperate to join Amorim’s project, albeit not everyone is feeling the same way amid recent developments.

Kobbie Mainoo wants to leave Man Utd for Real Madrid

According to reports in Spain, Kobbie Mainoo is pressuring Manchester United to sell him to Real Madrid and views a move to the Santiago Bernabeu as a dream destination in January.

This term, the England international has fallen out of favour under Amorim and hasn’t been a regular starter, though any transfer could depend on Los Blancos running into injury trouble or selling Dani Ceballos. Mainoo still wants out of Old Trafford and ‘his inner circle is working on finding a club that can guarantee him minutes’

BySean Markus Clifford Sep 13, 2025

INEOS may now be left with a decision to make on Mainoo’s future, which is complicated further by the fact he has two years left on his contract at Old Trafford.

Amorim stated earlier this week that the Carrington graduate needs to improve in the engine room to fulfil his potential fully: “I believe in him a lot. He is a top player. But some of you think that Kobbie Mainoo is already done [a complete player]. I think he can do so much better.

“For some guys (talent) is enough, but for him it is not. Maybe it’s not fair, but I think I’m helping Kobbie, and that’s it.”

After Mainoo asked to leave Manchester United on loan before the window closed, it appears there may still be work to do at Old Trafford to convince him to stick around amid interest from Champions League giants.
