Revealed: Lamine Yamal 'couldn't leave the hotel and asked not to play' as Barcelona teen received spine injection before starting Spain clash against Turkey

Lamine Yamal was given an injection by the doctors and physiotherapists of the Spanish national team ahead of their World Cup qualifying clash against Turkey as he was experiencing acute lower back pain. The 18-year-old had sustained a minor injury in the sacroiliac region before joining up with the national team but was trusted to play in the international games, sparking fury at Barcelona.

  • Spanish federation was in contact with Barcelona

A feud has erupted between the club and the national team after the teen sensation returned with an injury, ruling him out of their most recent match and is expected to the Champions League opener against Newcastle this week.

According to although the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) claimed Yamal had no discomfort, they had informed Barcelona that they had "injected Voltaren into his spine because he couldn’t leave the hotel and asked us not to play."

Yamal missed Valencia game due to injury

Barca missed Yamal’s services against Valencia, a game in which the Catalans whitewashed their opponents 6-0, with Marcus Rashford and Roony Bardghji starting on the wings.

Head coach Hansi Flick was furious with the RFEF’s treatment of Yamal, who was unable to train with his team-mates after returning to Catalunya. The 60-year-old said in the press conference: “Lamine Yamal will not be available. He went with the national team in pain and did not train. They gave him painkillers to play. They had at least a three-goal lead in every match, and he played 73 minutes and 79, and between matches he couldn't train. That is not taking care of the player. I am very sad about this.”

  • Sporting director Deco sides with Flick

Amid the controversy regarding Yamal’s injury and Flick’s comments, which stunned the RFEF, Barca’s sporting director, Deco, has backed the German manager. He said in an interaction with the club’s media team: “In Lamine’s case, I agree with what [Flick] said. In the end, we have to improve our communication, we have to improve the protocols between clubs and national teams. Players are subject to excessive workloads nowadays as we all know. [International breaks] are always complicated because many times players come back with injuries. We have to try to improve. We agree with the mister because in the end, [Yamal is] an important player for us, an important player for Spain, and I think between all of us we have to be a little bit more careful.”

    Will Yamal play against Newcastle?

Barcelona will be featuring in the Champions League this week to take on Premier League side Newcastle in their opening game. But unfortunately, the teenager, who did not train on Monday, is expected not to take the field.

He'd be great with Simons: "Immense" £52m talent now wants to join Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca may have already signed several players this summer, but he is far from finished in the transfer market.

With more incomings than outgoings, there could be problems with a bloated squad next term. However, there is still a need to move out players such as Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix, Axel Disasi and Raheem Sterling before the window closes.

Esperance Sportive de Tunis' Onuche Ogbelu in action with Chelsea's ChristopherNkunku

The rumour mill has been constant over the previous few weeks, with the Blues being linked with players right, left and centre.

Karim Adeyemi, Tyler Dibling and Malick Fofana have all been touted for a move to Stamford Bridge this summer as Maresca continues his charge of further bolstering his attacking options.

Alexander Isak was another who was mentioned following the Swedish striker looking for a way out of Newcastle, but this move would be extremely unlikely.

The most likely signing could well be that of Xavi Simons, as the Dutchman appears to be dreaming of joining the Blues, ahead of a potential move.

Splashing out a reported fee of around £56m could certainly be worth it in the long haul….

What Xavi Simons will bring to Chelsea

Simons has been used as an attacking midfielder throughout his career, but since joining RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023, the 22-year-old has tended to operate on the left flank.

With Chelsea having Cole Palmer, who is arguably one of the finest attacking midfielders in Europe, opportunities for Simons would likely come on the flank.

RB Leipzig'sXaviSimonsreacts after the match

Last season, Simons scored 11 goals and grabbed eight assists in all competitions, with nine of those goal contributions coming from the left wing.

When compared to his positional peers in the Bundesliga, however, he ranked highly for a number of key metrics.

Indeed, the Dutchman would rank in the top 6% for progressive passes (5.86) per 90, along with ranking in the top 15% for shot-creating actions (4.52), In the top 3% for through balls (0.96) and for carries into the final third (2.97) per 90, it is evident that Simons shone for the German side.

Combining this with a 20% goal conversion rate in the top flight, as well as creating 12 big chances while averaging two key passes per game, Simons would make a huge difference to the Chelsea side next season.

If a deal can be secured in the coming days for the youngster, Maresca would surely be happy with his attacking options ahead of the campaign starting in a few weeks.

Next on his list will be signing a defender or two in order to shore up the backline. Several names have been mentioned over the previous few weeks, but it looks as though the club have only one target in mind right now.

Jorrel Hato is that player. Could Maresca secure his signature in the next few days?

Chelsea edging closer to another exciting signing

The Blues have been keen on the Ajax starlet since before the window even opened, but it now looks as though they could be closing in on a move.

Fabrizio Romano provided an update on X regarding Chelsea’s pursuit of the player, saying that he has “informed the club about his desire to join Chelsea.”

This is good news for Maresca, and it will surely only be a matter of time before the club announces his signing.

The Dutch side will demand a fee of around £52m in order to sanction an exit, but given how much Chelsea have spent thus far, another £50m+ won’t hurt.

He has sparkled for Ajax since making his debut, and while Hato can operate either as a centre-back or left-back, Maresca will likely unleash him on the left.

If both Hato and Simons move to Stamford Bridge, it could form the basis of a potent combination down the left flank, that’s for sure.

Why Chelsea must sign Jorrel Hato

Hato is still only a teenager, having just turned 19 in March this year. He is nowhere near the finished article, but judging by his statistics from last term, the youngster has a wonderful future ahead of him.

Defensively, Hato was impressive in the Eredivisie. Not only did he win 52% of his total contested duels per game, but the defender also averaged 1.9 tackles per game and was dribbled past on just 0.3 occasions per match in the top flight.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig hailed Hato last season for his “immense quality” while also saying that he is a “fantastic mix of complete full-back, playmaking full-back, and ball-playing centre-back” and this could work in Maresca’s favour.

With Simons on the left wing, Hato has all the qualities – as evidenced by Kulig – to form a decent partnership with his compatriot.

From an attacking perspective, Hato recorded six assists in the league last term, along with averaging 0.6 key passes and creating six big chances.

Furthermore, the teen even ranked in the top 6% for assists per 90 (0.21) when compared to his positional peers in the men’s next 14 competitions.

Add in the fact he ranks in the top 11% for touches in the opposition penalty area (2.33) per 90 and in the top 2% for through balls (0.17) per 90; Hato has all the attacking requirements to star on the left flank behind Simons. That’s for sure.

It would be an expensive signing for someone so young, but Maresca has grand plans for Hato, and he will go from strength to strength over the next few years.

Should the club sign both Hato and Simons, they will be a force to be reckoned with next season. There is no doubt about that.

The next few weeks will certainly be interesting indeed for the Chelsea faithful.

Chelsea look to strike deal for Manchester United outcast

Man City player ratings vs Man Utd: Erling Haaland dominates on derby day as Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku and Gigi Donnarumma all impress in easy win over rivals

Manchester City returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion as Erling Haaland and Phil Foden struck the decisive blows in a 3-0 thumping of local rivals Manchester United in Sunday's derby. Foden opened the scoring in the first half before Haaland took the game away from the visitors with a brace in the second period.

After successive league defeats prior to the international break, City looked hungry from the start and took the game to their arch-rivals. Foden was at the centre of much of their good work in the first half and headed home in the 18th minute, though a lot of the credit for the goal must go to the jinking run and cross provided by the outstanding Jeremy Doku down the right.

United often found themselves when attempting to trouble City debutant Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal, though the Italy international stood up when needed with a top-class save from Bryan Mbeumo in the second half.

Haaland, meanwhile, struck twice after the break and was far too much for the United defence to handle, bearing down on goal twice to score from assists by Doku and Bernardo Silva. The Norwegian also struck the post from close range as he came regrettably close to another derby hat-trick.

Tijjani Reijnders should have put the seal on victory but chipped the ball wide when played clean through on goal by Haaland, but the da firmly belonged to the blue side of Manchester.

GOAL rates City's players from the Etihad Stadium…

Getty Images SportGoalkeeper & Defence

Gianluigi Donnarumma (7/10):

A stunning save from Mbeumo was the highlight of the Italian's debut. He was not called into action much but stretched every inch of his huge frame to show just why the club signed him.

Abdukodir Khusanov (6/10):

Playing at the unfamiliar position of right-back, Khusanov carried out his role well. Though the less said about his failed attempt at a throw-in in the first half, the better…

Ruben Dias (7/10):

Did a great job to ensure Sesko offered little threat on his first Premier League start. Playing alongside a young defence, Dias led the back four well.

Josko Gvardiol (7/10):

Adapting well to a regular role at centre-back for City, Gvardiol was a dependable partner for Dias as United's attack were frustrated.

Nico O'Reilly (6/10):

The 20-year-old made his first league start of the new season and generally handled the threat of Mbeumo well.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMidfield

Bernardo Silva (7/10):

Playing on the right of midfield, the captain did a good job for the team and grabbed an assist when he spotted Haaland running through on goal with a decisive early pass.

Rodri (7/10):

Making his second start of the season, Rodri was solid if not quite back to his best. It is a massive plus for City to have the Ballon d'Or winner back starting at the Etihad once again.

Tijjani Reijnders (7/10):

Looked at home alongside Rodri in the City midfield and the pair could form a formidable duo this season. Should have scored in a late break, though.

AFPAttack

Jeremy Doku (8/10):

The Belgian showed the end product often demanded of him with two outstanding assists. His dribbling ability was evident for the first, skipping past Shaw as if he was not there.

Erling Haaland (9/10):

Looked very much up for it from the start. Two second-half goals to make it eight in Manchester derbies already. Regularly a thorn in United's side, the Norwegian was far too much for the away defence to handle.

Phil Foden (8/10):

In the headlines earlier on in the day after Guardiola spoke of his hopes for the Englishman, Foden rose to the occasion. His goal was pin-point and his general play showed the confidence of a local lad who was determined to be the difference-maker in the derby.

AFPSubs & Manager

Nico Gonzalez (5/10):

Replaced Rodri in the 76th minute and slotted in seamlessly in midfield.

Savinho (5/10):

Replaced Doku and had a difficult task to follow the Belgian's influence on the game.

Oscar Bobb (N/A):

Replaced international team-mate Haaland with a few minutes to play.

Nathan Ake (N/A):

Came on alongside Bobb in the final stages to shore things up in defence.

Pep Guardiola (8/10):

Got the selection right with the inclusion of the likes of Foden, Rodri and Doku. As ever, Guardiola trusted his starting XI and only made substitutions late on with the game already won.

Twist in Sancho talks as £75,000-p/w Man Utd player wants to leave instead

Manchester United still have work to do in the transfer window and may now have the opportunity to offload another of their high earners, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Man Utd impress despite opening day defeat to Arsenal

Rome wasn’t built in a day, but Ruben Amorim can take plenty of encouragement from the way his side managed to maintain an adequate level of intensity during their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking on Match of the Day, he reiterated his belief that the Red Devils were the better team on the day, even if they ultimately came up short against Mikel Arteta’s dogged outfit in their opening Premier League encounter.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorimapplauds fans after the match

He stated: “We deserved more and we were the better team, that is clear but in the end we lost. We need to work on the things we need to improve. We need to defend set pieces. We did a lot things right.

“There are a lot of things without seeing the video that we need to work. I am really proud of my players. We were more aggressive and brave. In certain moments I think Bryan (Mbeumo) and Cunha helped a lot. We stuck to the plan even when the stadium is nervous, we continued to play the way we played and that will help us in the future.”

Altay Bayindir’s error between the sticks was all that separated both sides, so it won’t come as a surprise to hear that talks have been initiated for Manchester United to re-sign David De Gea as a potential fix to their goalkeeper situation.

However, with their move to sign Carlos Baleba stalling, outgoings have become a priority at Old Trafford, and Amorim could now have the opportunity to get rid of a star who isn’t part of his long-term plans.

Romano: Roma make contact to sign Tyrell Malacia

Taking to social media platform X, Romano has confirmed Roma have initiated contact to sign Tyrell Malacia from Manchester United to bolster their pool of left-back options. Importantly, and unlike their move for Jadon Sancho, the player is keen on the move.

Besiktas are also interested in the Red Devils’ outcast, who earns £75,000 per week at Old Trafford and is part of the infamous ‘bomb squad’ that Amorim would like to offload should appropriate interest arise.

Plagued by injury since joining under Erik ten Hag, Malacia has featured only 47 times for Manchester United and has struggled to make a lasting impact at the club.

Last term, he spent the second half of the campaign on loan at PSV Eindhoven and made 12 appearances across all competitions, and he could now be set for another exit sooner rather than later.

Arsenal "want to move very quickly" to sign "special" £55m Tottenham target

Arsenal now “want to move very quickly” to sign a “special” Tottenham Hotspur target, and talks with his camp are currently ongoing, journalist Sebastien Vidal has revealed.

Gunners step up pursuit of new attacker after Lookman blow

Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman handed in a transfer request earlier in the window, which could’ve paved the way for a move to the Emirates Stadium, but the Gunners have recently been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the London-born forward.

Consequently, Mikel Arteta’s side will have to move on to alternative options, and they remain interested in signing Real Madrid star Rodrygo, with transfer expert Graeme Bailey revealing they are “waiting for a signal” from the Brazilian forward.

Rodrygo in action for Real Madrid.

Tottenham are also in the race for the 24-year-old, with it recently being revealed that Thomas Frank has also approved a move for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, which could be a concern for Arsenal, who are also well-known to be interested.

In fact, the Gunners have now agreed a £55m fee with Crystal Palace, with the deal edging closer to completion, although there are still a few issues to sort out, such as the structure of the installments.

As such, the door could still be open for Spurs to make a late move, which is why Arteta’s side “want to move very quickly” to sign Eze, according to a recent update from Vidal on X.

Tottenham now discuss signing "genius" £25m attacker who's keen on PL move

Spurs have now held talks over the signing of an attacking midfielder.

ByDominic Lund Aug 11, 2025

The journalist states that Arsenal representatives were sent to the Community Shield final against Liverpool, in order to “maintain contact” with the 27-year-old’s camp and “avoid any setbacks”.

Tottenham have also identified the Palace star as a “priority” target, but a deal may not be possible for either of the north London clubs until Crystal Palace secure a replacement.

"Special" Eze would surely favour move to Arsenal

While Spurs ultimately secured Champions League qualification via their Europa League triumph, they finished 17th in the Premier League last season, which is likely to be in the back of the attacking midfielder’s mind.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have been knocking on the door for the past three seasons, and having finally signed a top striker in the form of Viktor Gyokeres, this could be the year they end their long wait to win the Premier League title.

As such, the England international would surely favour a move to the Emirates Stadium this summer, and barring any late hitches, it looks like the Gunners will get a deal done, which is exciting news, off the back of a very impressive 2024-25 campaign.

Lauded as “special” by members of the media, Eze is clearly now entering the prime of his career, and he could be a difference-maker for Arsenal in their pursuit of the Premier League title.

England crush New Zealand to claim series despite Blundell defiance

The winds came howling into Wellington off the Cook Strait but they were only blowing one way. England rolled through New Zealand inside three days at Basin Reserve to secure their first Test series win in the country since 2007-08. They were buffeted by a blistering hundred from Tom Blundell but could not be knocked off course.New Zealand had two notional targets: score 583 to win or survive almost nine sessions for a draw. Neither was a hot ticket, especially after they had shipped four wickets inside the first 14 overs of their innings. The card was given some respectability by Blundell’s counterattack, although it didn’t make much of a dent in the margin of victory. New Zealand’s next-highest score was the 42 contributed by Nathan Smith at No. 8.Sitting on an already formidable lead, England made a brief show of batting on, thereby enabling Joe Root to notch his 36th Test hundred, before getting down to the business of bowling out New Zealand for a second time. Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse made the initial incisions, before Ben Stokes himself finished things off with a trio of short-ball dismissals against the tail. The main resistance came from Blundell, who crashed 13 fours and five sixes in an innings that might have borne comparison with Nathan Astle’s famous 2002 Christchurch assault had he sustained it for another hour. Shoaib Bashir came in for severe punishment but was the bowler to eventually see Blundell off, albeit plenty of credit should go to Ben Duckett, who anticipated Blundell’s attempt to scoop and ran around from slip to intercept it down the leg side at the second attempt, after palming the ball up.New Zealand had been 59 for 4 when rain took the players off for an early lunch, and Blundell might have been dismissed third ball after the resumption. Jacob Bethell, at third slip, was unable to cling on to a thick outside edge off Carse, and Blundell was rock solid from that point on, initially in a steadfast partnership with Daryl Mitchell and then with increased abandon as he and Smith slammed 96 from 82 balls.Blundell’s fifth Test hundred, raised from 96 balls shortly after the tea interval, may not have altered the result but it was still a significant personal milestone, coming after a 22-month period in which he had averaged 13.52 from 14 Tests, with one half-century.Ben Stokes picked up three wickets to hasten the end•Getty Images

His dismissal, Bashir’s second wicket after that of Glenn Phillips during the afternoon session, was the cue for New Zealand to run up the white flag. Matt Henry launched Stokes’ fourth ball into the hands of the diving Bethell at deep midwicket, before Smith gloved a pull behind and Tim Southee, in his last Test appearance at Basin Reserve, fell swinging to leg.By that stage, England were content to wait for victory to fall their way – but they had begun the day in a hurry, Root gamboling to his hundred before Stokes’ declaration gave them time to knock over New Zealand’s top four before lunch. No team had successfully chased down more than 418 in the fourth innings of a Test – in fact, only in the timeless Durban Test of 1939 have more runs been scored, regardless of the result. That there was still the better part of three full days left in this game underlined the scale of the challenge for New Zealand. That only increased as Woakes, bowling into the wind, struck with his seventh delivery. Devon Conway perhaps made it look better than it was, leaving a big gap between bat and pad, but there was much to admire about Woakes’ wobble-seam nip-backer that kissed the top of off. Woakes then claimed the prize scalp of Kane Williamson with one that kicked up and left the New Zealand No. 3 for a thin edge through to Ollie Pope.Tom Latham fell to Carse, plunging acrobatically to his right in his follow through to hold a return catch off a leading edge. Mitchell responded with a salvo of boundaries before Carse had Rachin Ravindra edging behind trying to force a cut, the batter looking to the skies as the rain began to fall.England had resumed in an unprecedented position of comfort, sitting on a record second-innings advantage of 533 after two days of play. There was time to play for milestones, although only 6.1 overs were needed for Root to get to his hundred; Stokes then walked off with an unbeaten 49 to his name.Root’s innings had been a serene affair, but he went to three figures in somewhat ungainly fashion, tumbling over on to his backside while attempting his infamous reverse-ramp. Fortunately there was enough contact with his gloved hand for the ball to clear Blundell and bounce away for four, allowing Root to celebrate with an impudent smile. He was caught behind two balls later, at which point he and Stokes charged off and the main event could begin.

Bigger blow than Raskin: Rangers to receive £12m bid for "outrageous" star

Glasgow Rangers central midfielder Nicolas Raskin has attracted interest from other clubs in the summer transfer window, thanks to his performances at Ibrox over the last year or so.

Premier League sides Wolves, Aston Villa, and Leeds United have all been linked with an interest in the Belgium international, who is said to be valued at £25m by the club.

Despite his undoubted quality, which is backed up by interest from Premier League clubs, Raskin as not helped Rangers to pick up any wins in the first three Scottish Premiership matches.

The midfield star has failed to score or create a ‘big chance’ in any of the three games, fortunately registering an assist when the ball deflected off his thigh and teed up Findlay Curtis to score from range.

Rangers have failed to score more than one goal in all of their league outings, so far, and that is why it would be an even bigger blow for them to lose a difference-maker in the final third, rather than Raskin, before the deadline closes.

European side plotting bid for Rangers star

Whilst noise over Raskin’s future has gone quiet, despite the report interest from down south earlier this summer, there is still plenty of chatter over what will happen to one of Russell Martin’s star forwards.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to the Daily Record, Lille are preparing to submit an offer to sign Glasgow Rangers centre-forward Hamza Igamane before the end of the window.

The report claims that the Ligue 1 side are set to propose an initial fee of £9m with add-ons that could take it up to £12m, as they look to test the Scottish giants’ resolve.

It adds that Lille have already had one bid turned down for Igamane and that they have now reopened talks to sign the forward, who Martin claimed said he was injured and unavailable to come on as a substitute against St Mirren.

The Daily Record reveals that Rangers want a fee close to £15m to allow the forward to leave, but Lille are not willing to go that high and will offer a £12m package in an attempt to get a deal done near the end of the window.

Why selling Igamane would be a big blow for Rangers

Losing Igamane this late in the window would be an even bigger blow than losing Raskin because he is the kind of player who can turn poor performances into positive results.

Raskin is not a natural game-changing attacker who is going to score and create goals out of nothing on a consistent basis, which is partly why he has been unable to turn the tide in the first three games.

That is not a criticism of the Belgian maestro, who is a joy to watch in midfield at times, but it just speaks to the kind of player Rangers need right now, and that player is Igamane.

As you can see in the table above, the Morocco international helped to turn losses into draws and draws into wins with his contributions in the final third last season in the Premiership.

Igamane, who analyst Ben Mattinson claimed tries “outrageous” efforts in games, showcased his game-changing quality when he scored the winner against Celtic at Parkhead back in March, in the clip below.

The 22-year-old attacker is the kind of player who can turn a game on its head by delivering a moment of magic, which is what Rangers have sorely lacked in the first three games of the league campaign.

This is why selling Igamane would be an even bigger blow than losing Raskin this summer, because he has more potential to be an influential player for the Light Blues in the Premiership.
