Why Alexander Isak's Newcastle to Liverpool transfer saga is holding up Nicolas Jackson's Chelsea exit

The ongoing Alexander Isak transfer saga is reportedly holding up Nicolas Jackson's exit from Chelsea.

  • Chelsea trying to offload Jackson
  • Linked with Bayern Munich move
  • Reason behind Blues' hesitancy revealed
Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Despite Isak's best efforts to join Liverpool, he remains a Newcastle United player. And although Chelsea forward Jackson seems on the cusp of a loan switch to Bayern Munich, that move has not gone through, either. Here is why the Blues are 'reluctant' to offload the 24-year-old for the time being.

  • AFP

    THE EXPLANATION

The Telegraph states that until Isak's future is resolved, Chelsea aren't keen on letting Jackson go just yet. If Liverpool signed the Swede, Newcastle may move for Jackson but if Isak stays put, the Reds could swoop for the Blues man. And with Christopher Nkunku nearing a permanent switch to AC Milan, Chelsea believe they can afford to 'hold their nerve' over Jackson, who is also on Aston Villa's radar.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Senegal international Jackson, who is currently behind Joao Pedro and Liam Delap in the attacking pecking order at Chelsea, could join Bayern on an initial loan but the Blues want to insert an obligation to make the move permanent in the deal.

    WHAT NEXT?

It is said that Liverpool are not giving up on trying to sign the 25-year-old Isak this summer but time is running out for a deal to get done before the September 1 transfer deadline. A frantic final few days of the window appears to be in store.

Suárez marca de pênalti, Grêmio vence o Caxias e conquista o hexacampeonato do Gauchão

O Grêmio é hexa do Gauchão!

1 a 0 Tricolor e hexa do Gauchão sacramentado.

Back of a length helps Rashid Khan bounce back

Having gone for 104 in his previous eight overs, the legspinner worked out exactly where he had gone wrong, and set things right spectacularly in a match-winning spell against Mumbai Indians

Vishal Dikshit at the Wankhede25-Apr-20182:54

You don’t learn as a bowler until you are hit for runs – Rashid

He’s only 19, but he’s already played over 70 times at the top level for Afghanistan, and featured in T20 leagues around the world. It’s this experience that Rashid Khan fell back on after two forgettable IPL outings, to produce figures of 2 for 11 from four overs and help Sunrisers Hyderabad defend 118 against Mumbai Indians.Asked how he had prepared mentally after his maulings at the hands of Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab, Rashid replied with the kind of wisdom and understanding of the game one usually doesn’t associate with a teenager.” (You don’t learn as a bowler until you are hit for runs).”What went against Rashid in Sunrisers’ last two games was that he had to bowl a lot to left-hand batsmen Chris Gayle and Suresh Raina. While he does perform significantly better against right-hand batsmen, Rashid admitted on Tuesday night that he had also bowled too full in those two games. Raina carted him for 24 off only nine balls and Gayle clobbered six sixes against the legspinner for a total of 42 off 16.Of the nine balls Rashid bowled to Raina, eight landed in the good-length area and only one – a dot ball – was short of a length, according to ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball data. Against Gayle in Mohali, Rashid did not bowl a single short-of-length delivery; 13 pitched in the good-length area, two were full, and one was a full toss. The full-toss and the two full-length deliveries were all hammered for sixes.Rashid perhaps bowled on the fuller side of a good length to Raina and Gayle to give them less time to adjust off the pitch if they didn’t pick his variations from his hand, which is usually a difficult task given his quick-arm action. As a result, batsmen are trapped in two minds and are often beaten, which results in quite a few bowled and lbw dismissals. But bowlers often need to change their lengths depending on the conditions and the nature of the pitch, or the kind of batsmen they are up against. Rashid realised this and changed his strategy against Mumbai.”I bowled a little bit fuller in the last two games which didn’t help me and I was punished,” he said. “The only thing today was to bowl in a good-length area as much as possible and that’s what helped me bowl with good figures. The only thing was line and length, that’s what I have worked on and it’s a positive.”ESPNcricinfo LtdRashid dismissed a left-hand batsman on Tuesday – Krunal Pandya, lbw off a ball that hurried on from a short-of-good-length area – and conceded only six runs off the five balls he bowled to him. But Rashid’s test did not end there. When he came on to bowl his third over, Mumbai needed only 46 from 42 balls with six wickets in hand and Kieron Pollard on strike. The first ball of the 14th over, Rashid pitched slightly short, not too far from off stump, and Pollard, looking for the late cut, sliced it to slip. Off the next five balls he conceded only two runs to Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav. When Rashid returned for his last over, Mumbai had lost three more wickets, needed 39 from 24, and Hardik, their only hope now, was on strike. The field was spread out, inviting Hardik to take a single and bring No. 10 Jasprit Bumrah on strike.Hardik can be brutal against legspin – he has hit Shadab Khan and Adam Zampa for three successive sixes each in ODIs. Rashid’s length and trajectory would have to be spot on. It was; he sent down a succession of quick, flat, back-of-a-length deliveries, on the stumps or just outside off, and ended up bowling only the third maiden of the tournament. Such was Rashid’s accuracy that Hardik did not attempt a single aerial shot, was unable to pierce gaps for boundaries, and even failed to take a single off the last ball to retain strike.”I bowled to him in the last over (14th) as well and I knew where to bowl. The only thing was not to bowl too full to him. He’s a very strong hitter and he can clear any boundary. The only thing was to bowl a little bit back [of a length] to him and not give him too much room or too full that he could hit it easily. I just did the basics right and believed in myself and my deliveries. I just backed myself and that’s why I got a maiden over.”Mumbai coach Mahela Jaywardene pointed out that the slower-than-usual Wankhede pitch also went against his team and they would have attacked Rashid on an average day but could not on Tuesday, because of the nature of the pitch and the situation.”If we had a decent wicket today, the usual Wankhede wicket, we probably would have attacked him in the sense that we knew the ball is going to grip with the pace that he is bowling, we did not have to take any risk against him,” Jayawardene said. “If in a different situation we would have taken [the risk], like the other teams have taken him down in the last few games. But you have to play according to the situation as well.””Did the basics right” and “backed myself” are phrases you will hear repeatedly from cricketers on TV when they are asked about their standout performances. But to actually find reasons to believe in yourself and get back to the basics despite conceding 104 runs in your previous eight overs is not easy at all. Rashid made it sound and look easy, as if those two poor outings had never happened.

Paolo Maldini backed to make stunning return to AC Milan despite 'shameful' contract termination in 2023

Former AC Milan star Zvonimir Boban believes Paolo Maldini could make a comeback to the club despite what he called a "shameful" sacking back in 2023.

Boban believes Maldini's return to Milan "shouldn't be ruled out"Italy legend was sacked at the end of the 2022-23 seasonBoban reveals ex-captain is still attached to his former clubFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

In a recent interview on Andrea Longoni's 'Milan Hello' podcast, Zvonimir Boban, the former AC Milan midfielder and executive, suggested that Paolo Maldini might be open to returning to the club in the future. Maldini, a lifelong Rossoneri, was dismissed from his role as technical director in 2023, a decision that sparked criticism among fans and former players.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The departure of Maldini, who played over 900 first-team games for AC Milan between 1984 and 2009, marked a significant shift in the club's leadership, raising concerns about the direction being taken and the team's identity. Boban, who has been vocal about his disapproval of the club's current management, emphasised Maldini's enduring connection to Milan, stating: "He suffers, I know he suffers [after having had his contract terminated]… he has given his whole life for Milan."

Getty WHAT BOBAN SAID

When asked about Maldini's potential return, Boban said: "Even though I love and respect Milan so much, the symbols and flags are different. Paolo feels all this, he has given his whole life to Milan. The other day I told him that in the end he has to be happy, at the end of the day, whether he comes back or not – who knows, he wouldn’t mind a little."

On the decision to let the Milan legend go in 2023, the Croatian expressed his disgust at the Rossoneri hierarchy: "A shameful page, done in a shameful way. Indecent, unacceptable and I could say a thousand other bad things. Above all, inexplicable even for them. For them Paolo represented the last obstacle to do what they wanted. And the [Sandro] Tonali thing (allowing him to leave for Newcastle) had a big impact, Paolo would never have let him go."

Tottenham player ratings vs Bodo/Glimt: Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro score to wrap up comfortable Europa League tie as Ange Postecoglou's men set up final showdown against Man Utd

Spurs bagged a solid away win in Norway to set up a final against their Premier League rivals and keep their hopes of silverware alive

Tottenham secured their place in the Europa League final as Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro scored in the second half of their return leg with Bodo/Glimt on Thursday night, setting up a Bilbao showdown with Premier League rivals Manchester United later this month.

Having established a 3-1 lead in the first leg of the semi-final, Tottenham knew a solid performance at the Aspmyra Stadion would seal their place in the final. They did their bit in an ordinary first half, keeping a spluttering Bodo/Glimt attack at arm's length without providing too much threat of their own. Brennan Johnson nearly got on the end of a low Destiny Udogie cross, but goalkeeper Nikita Haikin palmed it away to safety.

Guglielmo Vicario did have to make one eye-catching save from a swerving Patrick Berg free-kick, but the Norwegian side didn't do enough to reduce the deficit and entered the second half knowing a big effort would be needed to grab the convincing win they needed.

However, no discernible improvement arrived and instead Solanke provided the goal Spurs needed to put them out of sight with a three-goal aggregate lead. Mathys Tel's corner was met by Cristian Romero and the striker was on hand to prod the ball in from close range.

Not long later it was 2-0. Porro got the chance to cross but the ball instead flew over Haikin in freakish fashion, onto the back post and in, extinguishing any lingering hope for Bodo/Glimt.

Tottenham will now face United in the final in Bilbao on Wednesday 21 May with silverware and Champions League football next season at stake.

Landsman claims first hat-trick of the Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup

The 18-year old’s talent was first spotted by a friend of her father while she was playing backyard cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Jan-2023South Africa allrounder Madison Landsman claimed the first hat-trick of the inaugural Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, in Benoni in their Group D clash against Scotland. Landsman, who bowls legspin, finished with 4 for 16 as Scotland were skittled for 68 in their chase of 113.With Scotland 43 for 5 at the ten-over mark, Landsman was brought into the attack. Her first two overs went for seven singles and a wide, with Nayma Sheikh and Maryam Faisal struggling to put her pace-less bowling away. In Landsman’s third over – the 15th of the innings – Faisal tried to pull a shortish ball only to top edge it to the wicketkeeper Karabo Meso.Niamh Muir then slapped a length ball outside off straight into the lap of captain Oluhle Siyo at cover, who took it on the second go. Landsman then bowled another slow half-tracker around off stump for the hat-trick ball. Orla Montgomery shuffled across her crease and tried to help it past short fine leg but missed it completely to set off wild celebrations from the South Africans.Landsman then had No. 11 Maisie Maceira caught behind on the last ball of her fourth over to complete a 44-run win. A report on says the 18-year old’s talent was first spotted by a friend of her father while she was playing backyard cricket at Springs in Gauteng. He was the coach of the boys’ team in her primary school and invited her to the Under-11 trials. She impressed and took massive strides in the sport playing school cricket. In 2019, when Landsman was just 14 years old, she was selected to represent Eastern Gauteng Ladies Provincial Cricket Team and in 2020 was part of the Women’s Super League, the annual T20 domestic tournament organised by Cricket South Africa. In 2021, she was selected to the South African Under-19 Girls Schools team for the National Cricket Week tournament in Paarl. Two and a half weeks before that tournament, Landsman tested positive for Covid-19, and although it hampered her training, she recovered well in time to inch closer to the dream of representing South Africa, albeit at the Under-19 level.Landsman, a key component of the middle order, didn’t have a great run into this World Cup, aggregating just 19 runs across four innings in a bilateral series against India. But come the opening match of the tournament, also against India, she smashed a quickfire 32 off just 17 balls walking in at No. 5 to help South Africa to a competitive total. She also dismissed Soumya Tiwari to return figures of 1 for 20 in 2.3 overs. She began the game against Scotland by being dismissed for a duck, but she sure did make amends for it later.
