Barcelona’s pre-season preparations were overshadowed by a public standoff with one of their most senior figures. Ter Stegen’s refusal to authorise the release of his post-surgery medical report to La Liga sparked disciplinary action and saw him briefly stripped of the captain’s armband. Barca needed his signature on the report to prove to La Liga that he will be out for more than three months, allowing the club to free up 80 per cent of his salary which could be used to register their new first choice goalkeeper, Garcia.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

That dispute has now been settled, with the German shot stopper and captain gicing permission for the report to be submitted and urging the club to "look forward" as he addressed the fans after the 5-0 win against Como in the Joan Gamper Trophy match on Sunday. While Garcia has not yet been registered, the new signing says he has been assured that all will be taken care of ahead of their opening game of the new La Liga season on Saturday.

  • WHAT GARCIA SAID

"I felt very comfortable. And with a win, that always helps. I'm very happy," the Spanish goalkeeper told . "I was looking forward to the presentation. We're all looking forward to going to Camp Nou, but it was here [at the Johan Cruyff Stadium] and it was also good. I'm satisfied."

On the ongoing wait for his La Liga registration, he added: "The club and those around me reassure me that everything will turn out well. I really can't do anything. I can only focus on my own things and hope that everything turns out well."

When he was asked about the recent controversy with Ter Stegen, Garcia emphasised that "there is no problem in the locker room. Ter Stegen is the captain, we respect him a lot, and it seems that everything has been resolved with the club, so there are no problems."

Newcastle told to sell Alexander Isak 'this week' by club legend as he slams 'shambles' of a saga amid £150m Liverpool link

Former Newcastle United midfielder Chris Waddle has urged his old club to cut ties with Alexander Isak immediately, branding the striker’s drawn-out transfer drama a “shambles” that has humiliated the club. With Liverpool circling with a £150 million ($203m) bid, the saga has dominated Newcastle’s summer, leaving fans furious, executives scrambling, and the dressing room clouded with uncertainty.

Waddle slams Isak transfer sagaLiverpool ramp up £150m pursuitNewcastle eye Larsen as replacementFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool are accelerating their pursuit of the Swedish forward with the transfer deadline days away. Newcastle have stood firm all summer, insisting their prized asset is worth every penny of the £150m valuation. But with time running out, pressure is mounting to either cash in or risk dragging the bad blood into the new season.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT WADDLE SAID

Waddle told: "If I were Newcastle, I would sell Alexander Isak this week. I know a lot of fans are urging the club to keep him to punish him, but we’re not talking about a player that is worth a couple million pounds. Isak’s transfer would be a nine-figure sum – an incredible amount of money; there’s too much money involved for him to sit in the reserves. If he does leave and Liverpool is his destination, I’d take the £100m plus add-ons and that would be the end of the chapter. The whole situation has been a shambles; it’s been handled like a pub team – it’s embarrassing. Whether it’s Isak himself or his agent, they’ve gone about it in completely the wrong way.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Whether Newcastle agree to sell could hinge on one crucial deal: the pursuit of Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. The 24-year-old Norwegian impressed last season, and Eddie Howe sees him as a potential successor. Newcastle have already lodged a £55m ($74m) bid, which was swiftly rejected by Wolves. If the Magpies can up their offer and seal the deal, the path for Isak’s departure could suddenly be cleared.

DID YOU KNOW?

Even if Newcastle pull off a deal for Larsen, Waddle is adamant: none of them can match Isak’s technical brilliance.

“Isak is going to be very hard to replace – he picks the ball up in deeper areas and can create a goal all by himself," he said. "No one available on the market is as technically adept as Isak; more often than not, they require service and the ball in the box to score. While Jorgen Strand Larsen and Nicolas Jackson have been linked as possible replacements, neither are on Isak’s level.

“I’m sure there are some hidden gems around the world in other continents like South America or Africa that could grow to become a similar player, but I don’t know of anyone in the Premier League who would be a realistic replacement.”

'He won't put himself through pain' – Ruben Amorim expected to walk away from Man Utd job if they fail to beat Burnley as Erik ten Hag comparison made

Legendary ex-Arsenal player Paul Merson expects Ruben Amorim to be "honest with himself" and step down if Manchester United fail to beat Burnley.

Merson sheds light on Amorim's future at UnitedPredicts the Red Devils will beat BurnleyBelieves the manager will resign if Man Utd loseFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Arsenal and Aston Villa forward Merson expects United head coach Amorim to hand in his resignation if the Portuguese's men fail to beat Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday. The pundit also made a comparison with former manager Ten Hag while speaking about the state of the Red Devils, highlighting the Dutchman's penchant for picking up a few wins before a long streak of disappointing results, and claimed that could become the case under Amorim should he continue at Old Trafford.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Amorim's job at the Theatre of Dreams has come under increased scrutiny following United's shock Carabao Cup exit thanks to a defeat against fourth-tier side Grismby Town on penalties earlier this week. Having taken over from Ten Hag midway in the 2024-25 season, Amorim could only guide the Red Devils to a 15th-place finish in the league.

Backed with an investment of over £200 million (€231m/$270m), which includes the arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, the notion was that United would spring back to life after a full pre-season under Amorim. Positive results over the summer generated excitement but it has been a less than ideal start to the season for the ex-Sporting CP boss. United are winless after their opening two league games and the defeat to Grismby only piled on to the misery.

Now, reports claim the United dressing room feels Amorim could resign as head coach in the near future, despite the higher-ups at the club apparently backing him. Merson, too, believes Amorim won't stick around and could depart if things don't go well against Burnley on Saturday.

WHAT MERSON SAID

Speaking on , Merson said: “I will be shocked if he’s still in charge if Man Utd don’t beat Burnley. But they will beat Burnley! It’s a nice game.

"Ten Hag had that as well: the three or four games without a win, and then second-bottom of the league came. They just won that game and then lost three or four games again. It’s just going to keep on covering the cracks. They will be called Pollyfilla United!

“I don’t think Amorim will be shy to go: I’ve had enough. I can’t do anything. I’ve done what I can. I don’t think he is one to put himself through pain to get his payoff. I don’t know the man, but coming across, I think he’s an honest man and will be honest with himself. But I think they will beat Burnley.”
