Finlay Bean, Joe Root turn the screw for Yorkshire after spin success

Yorkshire 295 for 2 (Bean 140*, J Root 92*) lead Glamorgan 221 (B Root 51, Bess 4-25, Moriarty 4-74) by 74 runs Spin duo Dom Bess and Dan Moriarty claimed four wickets apiece before pulsating knocks from centurion Fin Bean and Joe Root put Yorkshire on course for victory at the halfway stage of their Vitality County Championship clash with Glamorgan at Headingley.Glamorgan started day two on 109 for four and were bowled out for 221 during the early afternoon, with off-spinner Bess completing a superb four for 25 from 13 overs and left-armer Moriarty four for 74.Division Two promotion favourites Yorkshire then batted positively and serenely on a used pitch showing more signs of turn, reaching 295 for two from 49 overs when bad light stopped play with 12 to bowl.Unbeaten opener Bean hit a career best 140 off 145 balls and Root 92 not out off 90. They shared 201 unbroken for the third wicket. While current England star Root nears his second successive Championship century, former England spinner Bess performed in his first match of the season. These were his best first-class figures for Yorkshire since the opening game of 2023 when he claimed a second-innings five for 158 in defeat against Leicestershire here.Since then, he has been dropped by Yorkshire, been on two one-game loans at Warwickshire and Somerset and spent his winter playing domestic cricket in Zimbabwe, where he claimed a first-class haul of five for 99 for Southern Rocks. The Devonian, in the last year of his contract, started this summer in Yorkshire’s second team and behind Moriarty in the pecking order. But this display was a reminder of the significant talent which brought the 26-year-old 14 Test caps, the last of which came in early 2021.Bess and Moriarty started the day with one and two wickets respectively.Moriarty made the morning breakthrough when he had Chris Cooke well caught on the cut at cover by Harry Brook, ending a 65-run stand with Colin Ingram – 162 for five in the 56th over, the day’s 15th.Ingram was then trapped lbw by Bess with only his second ball of the day, for 48, leaving the score at 182-6.After lunch, both men had batters caught at short-leg.Moriarty had James Harris caught off bat and pad before Bess had Tom Bevan caught on the reverse sweep for 22, again by Bean, as the ball looped up off glove in the following over – 208 for eight.Bess then struck again when he had Jamie McIlroy caught at backward square-leg pulling. The following over, Mir Hamza top-edged a slog sweep at Moriarty and was caught behind to complete the innings in 79 overs.Six wickets fell in all during the afternoon, two of them in the early stages of Yorkshire’s reply, despite it advancing at pace to tea at 106 for two from 20.Adam Lyth was trapped lbw by Pakistani overseas quick Hamza before his compatriot Shan Masood, for 34, was caught at short-leg off Mason Crane’s leg-spin.Yorkshire then upped the tempo even further in the evening, with Bean – dropped on six by Harris off his own bowling – and Root in partnership. They took toll on a Glamorgan attack missing some key personnel through injury.On-loan Crane was put under particular pressure, going for 77 in only eight overs. Bean twice slog-swept him over long-on either side of reaching his second fifty of the season off 62 balls. Root followed him to that milestone off 44.Fifty one runs had come in the first five overs of the evening, and the third-wicket pair didn’t let up in a display which can be best summed up as men against boys.Belligerent Bean reached his century off 111 balls and hit two more sixes, while Root was all touch and timing. He would have got there but for the light intervening.

Marcus Rashford shows what he can do! Loanee's goal helps Barcelona to thumping victory over Daegu but Gavi steals the show in pre-season friendly

Barcelona made it three wins from three on their tour of Asia as they thumped Daegu FC 5-0, with Marcus Rashford scoring his first for the Blaugrana.

  • Rashford grabs first Barcelona goal

After a somewhat slow start by Barcelona's standards, Hansi Flick's men showed exactly why they were the best offensive team in the world last season as Raphinha and Lamine Yamal ran the show with their glitzy play before Gavi scored the opener for the Catalan side in the 21st minute. Yamal ran past two players before finding the midfielder open just outside the box, who found the net with a long-range shot.

The second goal of the clash did not take too long after Gerard Martin, who played at centre-back, switched roles with left-back Alejandro Balde and found Robert Lewandowski with a pinpoint cross that the Polish veteran simply had to slot past Daegu's stranded goalkeeper to double Barcelona's lead.

The Blaugrana found the third in injury time of the first half when Jules Kounde found Gavi with a delightful through ball in behind the Korean side's defensive line. The Spaniard chipped the charging goalkeeper from a tight angle for a fine brace.

The second period saw Marcus Rashford come on for his third appearance in a Barcelona shirt among a whole load of other changes, and it didn't take Flick's charges too long to get into their stride and grab their fourth goal of the night as Dani Olmo found Toni Fernandez, with the 17-year-old coolly slotting the ball inside the near post.

It was then Rashford's time to shine as the Manchester United loanee grabbed his first goal for the Blaugrana after Eric Garcia picked him out inside the box and he swept home an accurate finish. The game ended 5-0 thanks to Daegu goalkeeper Han Tae-hee, who saved eight shots in his 45-minute cameo in the second half.

    THE MVP

Gavi had a very difficult 2024-25 season under Flick as he returned from a nine-month layoff due to his ACL tear. However, the Spaniard has shown that he is slowly but surely getting back into his stride, as the 20-year-old didn't just score two goals against Daegu but also dominated the midfield in the absence of Pedri and ended the game with a 95 per cent passing accuracy and a 100 per cent shot conversion rate.

    NEW FACES

Rashford's minutes have been managed by Flick since the Englishman's move from United, as he has only made second-half appearances in Barcelona's first two pre-season friendlies. The same was the case tonight, however, this time the 27-year-old bagged his first goal in Blaugrana and also showed a lot of sharpness off the left-hand side.

Roony Bardghji had a spectacular debut for Barcelona, but since then, the Swede has seemed flat, and that was the same against Daegu. The 20-year-old was somewhat overshadowed by Fernandez.

Joan Garcia did not have the best of games, but his services were barely required through the first half, and the only time he was called into action, he misjudged a cross and allowed Daegu to shoot at an open goal, which the South Korean side missed.

  • ONES TO WATCH

Dro Fernandez and Toni Fernandez, two highly-rated attacking midfielders to come out of Barcelona's La Masia academy, got a run out in the first and second half of the clash, respectively. While Dro did not have a very remarkable showing, Toni showed off exactly why he is adored by Flick, who had considered bringing him into the first team last season at the age of just 15.

Jofre Torrents is likely to be used as a backup to Balde and Martin at left-back, and he was on smoke through the second period, showing off his remarkable pace and ability on the ball as he took on a number of players on on the left-hand side.

Dunkley, Scholfield lead South East Stars to victory at the Oval

Pair notch half-centuries in chase of 143 to beat Southern Vipers with 11 balls to spare

ECB Reporters Network02-Jun-2024Leg-spinner Dani Gregory demolished Southern Vipers’ middle order as South East Stars triumphed by six wickets at the Kia Oval to cement their status as Charlotte Edwards Cup front-runners.Gregory’s spell of 3 for 23 reduced the defending champions to 73 for 6 before Alice Monaghan (44 from 33 balls) and Rhianna Southby (25 from 22) counter-attacked with an unbroken partnership of 69 from 50.That enabled Vipers to post 142 for 6, but their total was not enough as Paige Scholfield (50 from 34) and Sophia Dunkley both struck half-centuries to usher Stars over the finish line with 11 balls to spare.Dunkley (53 from 42) was caught attempting to hit the winning runs, but Phoebe Franklin secured Stars’ fourth victory in five games, while Vipers now face a battle to qualify for the knockout stage.Put in to bat, Vipers were soon in difficulties as the relentless accuracy of left-arm seamer Alexa Stonehouse kept them under rein and Charli Knott departed cheaply, clipping Franklin to midwicket.Stonehouse removed Ella McCaughan, caught at cover, but captain Georgia Adams (19 from 12) lifted the tempo with successive boundaries as she and Georgia Elwiss (22 from 25) took their side to 61 for 2 in the ninth over. However, Vipers then lost four wickets for just 12 as Adams pulled Alice Davidson-Richards’ long hop to the diving Stonehouse in the deep and the next three fell to Gregory, including Elwiss who was bowled swinging across the line.Bowling in tandem with left-arm spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman, whose four overs cost just 21, Gregory appeared to have put Stars firmly in control – but Monaghan and Southby had other ideas.Southby drilled Dunkley for the first six of the innings in the 18th over, while Monaghan – dropped at long-on off the same bowler on 13 – capitalised to hammer 22 from Franklin’s final over, including two maximums and keep the visitors in contention. But, although Dunkley and Bryony Smith initially began slowly with the bat – taking 16 balls to find the boundary – they kept their wickets intact, bustling along to 47 in the Powerplay overs.Smith pulled Freya Davies over midwicket for six as she advanced to 31 from 25, departing to the first post-powerplay delivery when she hoisted namesake Linsey into the hands of long-off.The captain’s dismissal did little to derail Stars’ momentum and Scholfield straight-drove Mary Taylor to the rope before steering the seamer’s next delivery through the slip area for four more.Scholfield took advantage of some sloppy fielding to dispatch Nancy Harman for another two fours, but it was Dunkley who won the race to her half-century, thrashing Smith for a midwicket boundary to get there from 38 balls. Her partner followed suit from 33 deliveries and, although Davies had her caught behind before Knott (2 for 29) dismissed Dunkley and Davidson-Richards with successive balls, it made no difference to the outcome.

'Exactly what Matt Turner needed' – Alexi Lalas praises goalkeeper's clean sheet in New England Revolution return amid USMNT No. 1 battle

The analyst believes the American goalkeeper’s successful return to the Revolution could reignite his candidacy for the USMNT's No. 1 spot

Former U.S. star Alexi Lalas praised Matt Turner’s clean sheet in New England’s 2-0 win over D.C. United, noting its significance as the USMNT’s starting goalkeeper spot remains unsettled. Turner, on loan from Olympique Lyon, made several key saves in his return to the Revolution.

“Obviously the big story was Matt Turner back,” Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast. “I think he understands better than anybody that this is important and that he still is in the mix right now says a lot about the goalkeepers that haven't stepped up.

“And I know Matt Freeze had a good summer, but I don't necessarily think he's the answer. And I think if Matt Turner plays and plays well, and he did play well the other night, obviously got a shutout, albeit against a D.C. United team that is not very good.”

AdvertisementWHAT ALEXI LALAS SAID

The analyst highlighted that while the Revolution aren’t in the best shape, if Turner keeps up his performances and plays consistently, he’ll eventually solidify his position as the USMNT’s No. 1.

“But at this point, beggars can't be choosers, and New England has not been good,” Lalas added. “So, they got the 2-0 win. Matt Turner got the shutout. And I think that will, if he continues, lead to him being still with the incumbent and solidifying his position. And this is exactly what Matt Turner needed and maybe exactly what the New England Revolution needed going forward.”

Despite Matt Freese doing well at the Gold Cup, the USMNT have no clear No. 1 goalkeeper with Matt Turner, Zack Steffen, Patrick Schulte and Chris Brady all in the mix for the position. However, many critics and fans believe that Turner and Steffen are the frontrunners for the position.
