Bumrah's tips on yorker have helped a lot, says India U-19 seamer Naman Tiwari

The left-arm bowler wants to bowl the fastest ball in the world

PTI09-Feb-2024India Under-19 seamer Naman Tiwari wants to bowl the fastest ball in the world. The inspiration has come from watching videos of the greats of the game and speaking to Jasprit Bumrah.Left-arm fast bowler Tiwari, who is grabbing headlines in the ongoing Under-19 World Cup in South Africa, has found the tips he received from Bumrah at the NCA in Bengaluru working magic.Tiwari, who comes from Lucknow, has troubled batters with his yorkers and speed, grabbing ten wickets from five games so far, including two four-wicket hauls.Related

“Bumrah is a source of inspiration for us,” Tiwari told PTI Bhasha on the sidelines of a practice session at Willowmoore Park Stadium. “I watch his bowling videos a lot. I have met him several times at the NCA and talked to him a lot about the mentality and skills of a bowler.”He explained a lot [of things to me], which have been useful. He told me how to bowl accurate yorkers, and I have worked a lot [on that aspect] following his advice. I have to work hard to bring more aggression in my bowling.”I try to learn something from every bowler I like. I try to understand and learn by watching his [Bumrah’s] videos. I like Shoaib Akhtar’s speed, Dale Steyn’s swing and Mitchell Starc’s aggression very much.”Tiwari originally wanted to become a batter but fewer opportunities turned him to bowling.”I started playing cricket as a batsman but I was not getting many chances,” he said. “That’s why I started bowling at an academy in Lucknow. Since I am left-handed, I became a left-arm fast bowler.”His father is an LIC agent and the pressure to focus on academics was immense given his middle-class background. But his heart was in cricket.”Papa always told me to focus on my studies. I was in seventh standard and wanted to play cricket. I asked my father to give me three years’ time to prove myself in cricket. My family is very happy with my success today.”Papa calls me every evening. Seeing them [family] happy makes me feel very good that I did not disappoint them.”Tiwari’s aim is to become a lethal fast bowler and play Test cricket for India.”One day I want to bowl the fastest ball in the world. I also want to play the World Cup with the senior team. But, for now, I have to focus on performance. I want to continuously improve my game because the challenges will be even bigger in the future and I will have to prepare my base to face them.Happy with the team’s performance so far in the Under-19 World Cup, Tiwari said that it was the result of the team effort.”So far, the performance of all the players has been very good. Especially in the semifinals against South Africa, we showed tremendous spirit. I am very happy with the way we are playing and will try to maintain this momentum in the final also.”Although I like all formats, I find Test cricket the most challenging. That’s where the real test of a bowler lies and I want to become a good Test cricketer in the future.”

Bayern Munich move came 'too early' for Julian Nagelsmann as Germany boss admits he shouldn't have left RB Leipzig

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann believes joining Bayern Munich may have been the wrong move, admitting it came too early in his managerial career.

  • Nagelsmann feels his move to Bayern came too early
  • Feels he could have achieved more in Leipzig
  • Leipzig CEO calls him an outstanding coach

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Nagelsmann became the most expensive German coach in history when Bayern paid €25 million (£22m/$29m) to Leipzig for his services in 2021. He won the Bundesliga in his debut season but suffered a Champions League exit at the hands of Unai Emery’s Villarreal. In the following campaign, a run of poor domestic results and strained relationships within the dressing room led to his dismissal, with Thomas Tuchel replacing him as Bayern manager in 2023.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Nagelsmann was just 33 when he agreed to leave RB Leipzig for the Bavarian giants and admits that the switch to the Allianz Arena may have been premature, suggesting he could have achieved more had he stayed where he was.

  • WHAT NAGELSMANN SAID

Naggelsmann said: "Looking back, I left a bit too early. There are also players who sometimes move somewhere too early. I guess I did that too even though it wasn't a mistake to go to Bayern, but in retrospect, I felt really comfortable here and could have achieved a lot more with the club."

Speaking about the move, Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff expressed his regret over letting Nagelsmann leave, saying: “For me, Julian Nagelsmann was the best coach I've ever experienced. An outstanding coach."

states that former Burnley and Watford man Marvin Sordell, who is co-chief executive of Opus Race Promotions, is chairing a F1 proposal that has 'early support' from the Nigerian government. The plan is to host a grand prix in the capital, Abuja, in addition to building a kart track, hotels, a technology hub, and more.

South Africa has hosted F1 races before, between 1967 and 1993, but Africa has not welcomed the sport to its shores for more than three decades. The report adds that in April, Opus held discussions with the chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, and a month later, it was officially appointed to negotiate with F1 and the FIA, the sport's governing body, on behalf of the Nigerian government. There is still a long way to go, however, before this can become a reality.

WHAT LEWIS HAMILTON SAID

At the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton stressed the sport needs a race in Africa next.

He said: "We can’t be adding races in other locations and continuing to ignore Africa, which the rest of the world just takes from. No one gives anything to Africa."

High-flying Royals look to end Jaipur leg on winning note

Match details

Rajasthan Royals (P7 W6 L1; 1st) vs Mumbai Indians (P7 W3 L4; 7th)
Jaipur, 1930 IST (2pm GMT)

Big picture – Mumbai bowlers need to chip in

After losing three games in a row, Mumbai Indians bounced back with three wins in their next four matches. However come Monday, against the high-flying Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance alone might not be enough to guarantee a win.Table-toppers Royals have won six of their seven games with Sanju Samson (276 at a strike rate of 155.05), Riyan Parag (318 at 161.42) and Jos Buttler (250 at 147.92) contributing 844 runs. Up against a strong batting side, Mumbai will need other bowlers to chip in as well if they are to move up in the points table from sixth position. For the visitors, Bumrah has led the attack with 13 wickets at an economy rate of 5.96. Their new-recruit Gerald Coetzee has been inconsistent in this IPL, but he stepped up against a spirited Punjab Kings with 3 for 32. Though guilty of leaking 9.92 runs per over in his first IPL season, he has accounted for 12 wickets in seven games, joint-second in the wicket charts.Related

However, barring the two seamers, Mumbai’s bowling has disappointing. Their overall economy of 10.11 is the third worst among the teams and they average 31.67 with the ball.Hardik Pandya and Akash Madhwal bowled in five games, both conceding more than 11 runs an over for a combined nine wickets. Shreyas Gopal replaced Piyush Chawla in the spin department, but has not found his feet yet. The under-utilisation of Mohammed Nabi has also hurt Mumbai – the Afghan spinner has bowled just six overs in four matches, with no wickets to show.On paper, Royals start as favourites and would look to end their final game in Jaipur on a high.

Previous meeting

Earlier in the competition, Royals beat Mumbai by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in a low-scoring game. Trent Boult’s 3 for 22 rattled Mumbai and they were restricted to 125 for 9. In reply, Parag’s unbeaten 54 off 39 helped Royals chase down the target inside 16 overs.

Team news and impact player strategy

One of Yashasvi Jaiswal or Jos Buttler will sub out when the team is bowling, with seamer Kuldeep Sen coming in as an impact player. It is still not clear if Sandeep Sharma will be available for the game.Probable XII 1 , 2 , 12 Yuzvendra Chahal.Mumbai Indians
Since Suryakumar Yadav’s comeback from injury, he has been used as an impact sub, with seamer Akash Madhwal replacing him when the team bowls. Mumbai could continue with the same approach in Jaipur also.Probable XII 1 Ishan Kishan (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 , 4 Hardik Pandya (capt), 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Tim David, 7 Mohammad Nabi, 8 Romario Shepherd, 9 Shreyas Gopal, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Gerald Coetzee, 12 2:51

Do the results justify Ashwin’s promotion in the batting order?

In the spotlight – Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gerald Coetzee

Yashasvi Jaiswal had an impressive season in the IPL last year, scoring 625 runs at an average of 48.07 and a strike rate of 163.61. More than half of those runs came inside the powerplay where he scored 361 runs. However, in this IPL, he has been going through a lean patch, having scored 121 runs at an average of 17.28 and a strike rate of 145.78. Though Parag, Samson and Buttler have shouldered the bulk of the responsibility in batting, Royals would hope Jaiswal gets his mojo back.Gerald Coetzee has ramped up his performance in the recent times, to be the second highest wicket-taker for Mumbai behind Bumrah, with 12 scalps. In an otherwise misfiring bowling unit, Mumbai will depend on him and Bumrah to keep Royals at bay.

Stats that matter

  • Jaiswal has been dismissed six out of seven time inside the powerplay this IPL.
  • Bumrah and Coetzee combinedly have taken a total of 25 wickets so far in IPL 2024.
  • Parag has hit 20 sixes in seven innings, the most for a Royals batter.
  • Buttler’s strike rate drops to 95.38 against Bumrah in IPL. The Mumbai fast bowler has dismissed him two out of eight times, for 62 runs off 65 balls.
  • Yuzvendra Chahal has picked up a wicket in each of his seven matches. In Jaipur, he has seven wickets from four games thus far.
  • Royals have the third-best average of 27.79 and second-best economy of 8.73 with the ball, behind Chennai Super Kings.

Pitch and conditions

Sawai Mansingh Stadium has hosted four games so far and when Royals had batted first in three of those, they posted scores of 193, 185, 196. It has been a batting-friendly venue with some assistance for spinners. The final game in Jaipur is also expected to be a high-scoring one.

To pick or not to pick Shreyas Iyer – the big question for India's selectors

The selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar will meet on Friday to pick India’s squad for the last three Tests against England

Retain Shreyas Iyer or drop him? That is set to be one of the first questions for the selection panel when it meets on Friday evening to pick India’s squad for the three remaining Tests of the England series.ESPNcricinfo has learned that Iyer had informed the team management that he had experienced back spasms a day or two after the end of the second Test in Visakhapatnam, which India won to level the series 1-1. The BCCI medical staff, though, are understood to have cleared Iyer for selection.Apart from Rohit Sharma, Iyer is the only senior India batter to not register a significant score in the first two Tests – he made 35 and 13 in Hyderabad and 27 and 29 in Visakhapatnam. Considered one of India’s best batters against spin, Iyer has, however, struggled to find fluency, struggling both in his defence and in his strokeplay.Related

Bumrah becomes first Indian quick to be No. 1 in Tests

Theme for a meme Kuldeep makes Test cricket fun

Insiders believe Iyer’s struggles could be a result of him feeling stiffness in his back as he bats for long periods. A pinched nerve in his lower back flared up originally during the fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2023. Last April, he had undergone back surgery to deal with a slipped disc, which had caused him “excruciating pain” and made him doubtful about his future.Iyer then missed the IPL, where he leads Kolkata Knight Riders, but returned to play for India in the Asia Cup. However, recurring back spasms restricted his involvement to just two matches. But a successful ODI World Cup, where Iyer played impact innings in the middle order – including in the semi-final against New Zealand – suggested he had completely recovered.Dropped from India’s T20I squad in the home series against Afghanistan in January, Iyer tested his match fitness for the England Test series by playing a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai against Andhra, where he batted once and scored 48.2:58

Are captaincy duties affecting Rohit’s batting?

While he was in the squad for the first two Tests, there was no assurance that he would be in the XI – he was competing with KL Rahul for one middle-order slot. But once Virat Kohli ruled himself out for the first two Tests for personal reasons, and could be out for longer, Rahul and Iyer got into the XI for the first Test.Rahul, who was ruled out of second Test because of a quad niggle, is expected to be fit for the second part of the England series. Now the selectors have to decide whether they want to retain Iyer or place their faith in Rajat Patidar, who made his debut in the second Test and impressed with his technique and composure. Not to forget, Sarfaraz Khan was also in the squad for the second Test, but didn’t get into the XI.Bumrah to be rested for fourth or fifth Test? One other significant talking point for the selectors will be Jasprit Bumrah, who is the leading bowler so far in the series with 15 wickets. While Bumrah has shown no fitness concerns since resuming to play at the World Cup after undergoing back surgery last March, the selectors are understood to have acknowledged the point made by the BCCI medical staff about manging the workload of Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, both all-format players.Siraj was rested for the second Test, but is expected to return for the third in Rajkot starting February 15. Bumrah, too, is set to play the match, but is likely to get a break for one of the two final Tests – in Ranchi and Dharamsala.

PERIGO DAQUI E DALI

Jamie Overton set to miss Test summer with back stress fracture

Fast bowler suffers recurrence of injury that limited his availability in 2023

England’s fast-bowling stocks have been dealt another blow after Jamie Overton was diagnosed with a lower-back stress fracture which will likely rule him out of contention for their Test series against West Indies and Sri Lanka this summer.Overton played his only Test at Headingley in June 2022, taking two wickets against New Zealand and scoring 97 from No. 8. But a stress fracture ruled him out of the Ashes last summer and, after initial scans on his back were inconclusive, he has been diagnosed with another stress fracture which is likely to keep him out for the rest of the English summer.A Surrey spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo: “We can confirm that Jamie Overton has suffered a stress fracture of the lower back. There is currently no timeline for his return but he will continue his recovery under the guidance of the Surrey medical department.”Overton still hopes to play some cricket this summer and it is understood that his latest stress fracture was caught relatively early. He has previously played as a specialist batter in the T20 Blast while recovering from previous injuries. It is a cruel blow for Overton, who was set to feature in England’s squad for the T20 World Cup in June but felt discomfort after Surrey’s draw in the County Championship against his old club Somerset. Rob Key, England men’s managing director, said that Overton was “very much in the running” for selection and was “desperately unlucky” to miss out.England’s fast-bowling depth will be tested this summer following Stuart Broad’s retirement after last summer’s Ashes, and with James Anderson set to bow out of international cricket after the first West Indies Test at Lord’s.Josh Tongue, who joined Nottinghamshire from Worcestershire in the off-season, is yet to feature this season and is unlikely to play Test cricket this summer due to a pectoral muscle issue. “Josh has had a setback to his original injury,” an ECB spokesperson said. “There is no timescale on when he’ll return to action.”Saqib Mahmood, who is returning from multiple stress fracture of his own, came on and off the field several times on the final morning of Lancashire’s Championship match against Durham on Monday, while Matthew Potts only bowled three overs in Lancashire’s second innings.
