According to , Sunderland have made an audacious approach for Xhaka, who is set to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer after just two years back in Germany. The reporter claims the Black Cats are in contact with the 2023-24 Bundesliga champions over a €10 million (£8.6 million) transfer and are willing to offer the 32-year-old Switzerland international a three-year contract.

Sunderland aren't the only side interested in recruiting the midfielder. The former Gunner has reportedly been in talks with Saudi Arabian side Neom which would see Xhaka receive a significant pay rise, while AC Milan have been keen on him in recent months without making much progress in negotiations with Leverkusen.

DID YOU KNOW?

Sunderland were something of a surprise package last season as they won promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs, but that hasn't stopped them investing heavily in their squad in anticipation of their first season back in the top flight since 2016-17. Enzo Le Fee's loan move has been made permanent, while Habib Diarra, Noah Sadiki, Reinildo Mandava, Chemsdine Talbi and Simon Adingra have all arrived at the Stadium of Light.

Maxwelled India, new-look Australia brace for another run fest

Experimentation could be on the cards for both teams as hosts look to pick themselves up after the loss in third T20I

Sreshth Shah30-Nov-20231:39

Benhrendorff: T20 World Cup a massive driving factor

Big picture – will India experiment? It has rained runs all through the first three T20Is. Batters have turned bowlers into bowling machines instead and with 123 fours and 65 sixes hit already, expect more of the same as the teams face off in Raipur in the fourth T20I.There will be some relief for India knowing Glenn Maxwell has finally left the country after producing yet another stunning performance in Guwahati that has kept the series alive. It is now up to the eclectic group of reinforcements in Australia’s weary squad to level the series, and given the long-term ambitions for the 2024 T20 World Cup, experimentation could be on the cards.Related

Gaikwad and Maxwell: two brilliant centuries, two vastly contrasting methods

Australia's unlikely cast reinforces weary T20 squad in India

For India’s bowlers, it will be an opportunity to pick themselves up after the Maxwell mauling. Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel have produced strong opening spells but dew has negated their effectiveness in the back end. The seamers, especially Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna, have missed their lengths regularly and gone for plenty. Deepak Chahar, recently drafted in, and Mukesh Kumar, back from his wedding, could cover some of India’s gaps in the powerplay and at the death. They may also be tempted to play a proper sixth bowler after stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav struggled with only five choices in the last outing.Form guideIndia LWWWW
Australia WLLWWIn the spotlight – Jason Behrendorff and Prasidh KrishnaJason Behrendorff’s height has always made him an X-factor, and combined with his new-ball control, he has stood out in a series that’s been a graveyard for fast bowlers. He’s cramped India’s left-hand batters and teased the right-hand batters with deliveries that go across. The odd swinging ball into the right-hand batters have also kept them circumspect, and a result of that was his 17 dots in a spell of 1 for 12 in Guwahati. In the first T20I, too, he conceded only 25, and for Australia to level the series, his four overs will be crucial.Jason Behrendorff has been impressive for Australia•Sportzpics

On the other end of the spectrum lies Prasidh Krishna, who as recently as the World Cup was considered the next-best fast-bowling option after India’s first-choice seam-bowling trio. In the first three games, he’s been the seniormost fast bowler in the XI, but after an economy of more than 13 in the T20I series, he’ll have to dig deep into his reserves to find a way to overcome the rampaging batters.Team news – Will Shreyas Iyer and Chris Green come in?Mukesh should slot into the XI if India are looking at just the series win and not anything long term. Otherwise, India have tried to give their players a long run this series. Shreyas Iyer, the vice-captain of the side, is also back after sitting out the first three games, and he could come in, possibly for Tilak Varma. Deepak Chahar is also back in the squad after a long layoff, and could get a look in.India (probable): 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 3 Ishan Kishan (wk), 4 Suryakumar Yadav (capt), 5 Shreyas Iyer/Tilak Varma, 6 Rinku Singh, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Ravi Bishnoi, 9 Arshdeep Singh/Deepak Chahar, 10 Prasidh Krishna/Avesh Khan, 11 Mukesh KumarWill offspinner Chris Green get a T20I debut for Australia? He is among four fresh players who could slot into the Australia XI in any combination after the likes of Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis left. Australia could also use batters Josh Philippe or Ben McDermott, or left-arm seamer Ben Dwarshuis. Aaron Hardie, despite conceding Australia’s joint-highest number of runs in a T20I last game, should get another go.Australia (probable): 1 Aaron Hardie, 2 Travis Head, 3 Matthew Short, 4 Ben McDermott, 5 Tim David, 6 Matthew Wade (capt, wk), 7 Chris Green, 8 Ben Dwarshuis, 9 Nathan Ellis, 10 Jason Behrendorff, 11 Tanveer Sangha.Pitch and conditionsThe only bit of international cricket in Raipur was when New Zealand were rolled over for 108 by India in an ODI earlier this year. The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium once claimed to have the largest boundaries in Asia, but expect dimensions fit for a T20 extravaganza come Friday.Stats and trivia Two of Australia’s three fastest T20I hundreds have come in this series – by Inglis in Visakhapatnam and Maxwell in Guwahati – in 47 balls. The stadium in Raipur lays the claim of being India’s 50th venue for international cricket. Behrendorff has conceded only 37 runs in eight overs this series. He has also bowled the only two maiden overs delivered in the series.Quotes”It will make a lot of difference. The reputation he has in T20 cricket, the sort of form he is in since the World Cup, it will make a big difference to our batting. He is a senior player as well, so that experience will also help us a lot.”
“Generally, guys talk about bowling first here because once the dew sets in, the conditions do change a little bit. I think that has been the strategy for most teams playing night cricket in India. It all depends on what happens with the toss of the coin, but I think either side will probably look to bowl first.”

Men's Under-19 World Cup to run from January 19 to February 11 in South Africa

The next edition of the Men’s Under-19 World Cup, which was shifted from Sri Lanka to South Africa, will be held from January 19 to February 11 next year, with the final taking place in Benoni. The four groups are the same as they were announced earlier: India, Bangladesh, Ireland and USA are in Group A; England, South Africa, West Indies and Scotland in B; Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Namibia in C; and Afghanistan, Pakistan, New Zealand and Nepal in D.Two games will be played on the first day – Ireland vs USA in Bloemfontein and South Africa vs West Indies in Potchefstroom – and defending champions India will begin their campaign the following day, with a game against 2020 champions Bangladesh in Bloemfontein.

An ICC statement on Monday confirmed the dates for the tournament as well as the five venues where the 41 matches will be played: Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom, East London’s Buffalo Park, Kimberley Oval, and Willowmoore Park in Benoni. It will also be played in a new format, where teams progressing from the four groups of four teams each will enter a Super Six stage, where two groups of six teams will vie to get into the semi-finals.The tournament had to be shifted out of Sri Lanka after the ICC Board provisionally suspending Sri Lanka Cricket, on November 23, because of extensive government interference in the SLC’s administration.”In the past 12 months we have seen South Africa successfully deliver two milestone events for the sport – the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup last year, and the groundbreaking ICC Women’s T20 World Cup that immediately followed,” ICC head of events, Chris Tetley, said. “The relocation of the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 to South Africa allows us the opportunity to build on this momentum and welcome the best young cricketers on the planet to five notable international venues.”Tournament director Wanele Mngomezulu said, “While the task of hosting the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 has been conferred upon us with very tight timelines, we are happy to take on the challenge. Hosting this event allows us an opportunity to further sharpen our skills and capabilities in the run up to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 which will be held in South Africa.”Hosting the tournament on home soil is opportune for us to promote cricket to sport loving South Africans and attract new fans and young talent to the game, thereby driving our strategic pillars of excellence, access, and inclusion.”Ahead of the event, the teams will play two warm-up matches each, between January 13 and 17, in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

MLS Coaches on the hot seat: FC Dallas's Eric Quill, Atlanta United's Ronny Deila and New England Revolution manager Caleb Porter all under pressure

GOAL takes a look at three managers whose seats are heating up in the second half of the MLS campaign

D.C. United's Troy Lesense in the latest to get caught up in the MLS coaching carousel, with the former RBNY assistant fired after the team's elimination from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup last week. He joined Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes, CF Montreal coach Laurent Courtois, and St. Louis CITY manager Olof Mellberg among the coaches dismissed this season.

There is little margin for error as the second half of the campaign begins, with each Conference race heating up.

Eric Quill, the first-year head coach with FC Dallas, has looked somewhat out of his depth in recent weeks, and heading into Matchday 25, FCD sit 13th in the standings and eight points outside a guaranteed playoff spot in the West.

New England Revolution boss Caleb Porter and Atlanta United manager Ronny Deila have both had underwhelming stretches, and both will be under pressure considering how competitive the East is this season.

GOAL takes a look at MLS coaches on the hot seat.

Get the MLS Season Pass today!Stream games nowGetty Images SportEric Quill: FC Dallas

Quill, in his first year at FCD after joining from USL side New Mexico United, has faced mounting concerns this season. Injuries haven't been kind to his roster at times, and some key players have missed minutes. But as it stands, FCD isn't seen as a threat by their Western Conference competitors.

In 21 matches, they've only taken 21 points and sit 13th in the West. They have the second-worst goal differential in the conference at minus-12, with just 23 goals and 35 conceded. Notably, they're the worst-performing home team in the West this year so far.

They only have one home win on the season, taking five points from a possible 30, with a mark of 1-7-2. Mellberg, who was fired by CITY earlier this season, was also a first-year manager in MLS – and was removed just months into his new role. Things must turn around for Dallas if Quill hopes to escape that fate.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportRonny Deila: Atlanta United

Deila, a former MLS Cup winner with NYCFC, was expected to take Atlanta United to new heights in 2025 after the club spent big this offseason – that included MLS-record signing Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough and club legend Miguel Almiron from Newcastle United.

The duo joined as Designated Players alongside a former Europa League winner from Atalanta in Alexey Miranchuk. The trio – arguably the most star-studded DP group outside of Inter Miami's ex-Barcelona group of Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets – cost the nearly $50M. With that, expectations were enormous.

Fast forward to the season's mid-point, and Atlanta is on just 19 points through 21 games and has yet to win a single road match. They're 12th in the Eastern Conference, 12 points back from a guaranteed playoff spot, and 25th in the race for the Supporters' Shield.

Seemingly everything has gone wrong for Deila this season, from struggling to figure out his tactical setup to individual defensive errors plaguing his squad. As it stands, Atlanta – the league's highest-spending team in 2025 – is going to miss out on the postseason by a wide margin.

Getty Images SportCaleb Porter: New England Revolution

It's been a familiar theme over the past 18 months: Caleb Porter on the hot seat in New England.

He managed to last the entire 2024 campaign. The club turned over their roster in the offseason, and things looked to be trending positive through the first 15 weeks – including a stretch in which they won five straight across all competitions.

Since that stretch, however, the Revs have played 12 matches and they've won just once – that came against CF Montreal, who were in last place in the East at the time. They're winless in six at the moment, and things are not looking good for the club.

The positive spin is that are in the thick of the playoff race. Just four points separate the Revolution from ninth-place Charlotte, and six from the final guaranteed playoff spot in the East.

For Porter and the Revs, qualification for the playoffs is the bare minimum.

+ Ben Olsen and the Houston Dynamo missed the playoffs from 2018 through 2022, made the Conference semifinals in 2023, and exited the 2024 version in the opening round. However, they have stagnated in 2025. As it stands, they're competing for a play-in spot, and are hoping to climb into a guaranteed postseason position.

+ Pablo Mastroeni has an important transfer window ahead of him for Real Salt Lake. It's make or break for a club that is in desperate need of reinforcements. Factor in that there there is European interest in Diego Luna, and the window becomes even more important. If Mastroeni and the RSL front office can't bolster their roster ahead of a playoff push, things could take a turn for the worse.

BBL to consider rule changes in bid to prevent overseas exodus for future finals

Cricket Australia will consult BBL clubs over potential changes to contracting rules in a bid to try and keep overseas stars for future finals series. The BBL celebrated a return to life this summer with the shorter home-and-away season coinciding with a 27 per cent increase in average crowds. There were crowds of beyond 40,000 in five matches for the first time since 2017-18, while the Melbourne Renegades saw their average increase by 63 per cent. But officials know challenges still loom. Six overseas players will miss the finals having jetted out for the UAE’s lucrative ILT20 after the last round-robin week of competition. Perth Scorchers’ Laurie Evans, Brisbane Heat’s Sam Billings and Colin Munro, Sydney Sixers’ James Vince and Adelaide Strikers’ Jamie Overton and Adam Hose will all be absent.Related

Clubs were aware of the player availability when they were picked in the draft, with the huge money on offer in the UAE from clubs often owned by players’ IPL franchises hard to resist. Officials hope to find an answer for future seasons and finals series, with an overwhelming message from players that they would like to stay.It is understood that contractual discussions are likely to feature in end-of-season talks when the embargo period ends after Wednesday’s final. One suggestion, floated by Billings, is more security for overseas players out of the draft, with multi-year deals one idea to offer more certainty when negotiating arrival dates with rival leagues.”We have seen this year the role overseas players continue to play in the BBL,” BBL boss Alistair Dobson told AAP. “They have been great performers on the field, they are fan favourites and the broadcasters love them.Laurie Evans has left the BBL for the ILT20•Getty Images

“However, we need to continue to evolve our competition and make our competition appealing to the players to come and play in the BBL. And ideally, [to] have them play as many games as possible has been and will continue to be a clear focus for us.”A more compressed schedule next season with no break for the Perth Test is also expected to aid in luring overseas talent for more matches. In a big summer for the BBL, first-placed Brisbane had average crowds increase by 45 per cent before Friday night’s grand-final qualifier against Sydney Sixers on the Gold Coast. Perth were also up 35 per cent, while attendances in Melbourne grew by 39 per cent. The rise comes despite five abandoned matches included in the figures, with numbers close to what they were in 2018-19 before the competition’s slide. The reduction from 56 regular season games to 40 is part of that, allowing organisers and broadcasters to return to the every-game-is-an-event mantra that the BBL thrived on its early years.”This year it has only got stronger and gives us a bigger platform for next year and beyond,” Dobson said. “Fewer games adds scarcity, but it also provides capacity and oxygen to our schedule and ensures every game is promoted in a bigger and better fashion.”

The thrillers
Having come into their fifth-round fixture without a win, Services were bundled out for 108 on the opening morning under swinging conditions in Lahli. It’s from here that they orchestrated an epic comeback against Haryana that culminated in a sensational one-run victory. This was only the second time in Ranji history that a team had managed to secure victory by one run. Andhra was the only other team to pull off this feat, when they beat Tamil Nadu by this margin, at Salem in 1974-75.Pulkit Narang, the offspinner who has recently been part of India A, led Services’ turnaround. His three wickets were instrumental in Services pocketing a five-run first innings lead. Rajat Paliwal, the captain, then led the way with 86 in the second innings to set Haryana a target of 146, which if achieved would have propelled them to the top of the standings.Haryana made a good fist of the target, with openers Ankit Kumar and Harshal Patel adding 51. Then from 81 for 1, they sensationally collapsed; losing 6 for 11 as Narang ran through the batting line-up to pick up 5 for 55 as Services clinched a famous win.In Surat, Manish Pandey played a clutch knock to help Karnataka clinch a one-wicket thriller against Railways.Chasing 226, the inexperienced top order, sans Mayank Agarwal and Devdutt Padikkal, caved in and were at 99 for 6. Stand-in captain Nikin Jose registered a pair. But the lower order rallied with Pandey remaining unbeaten on 67.Pandey aside, there was a crucial contribution from pacer Vijayakumar Vyshak, who made 38. But when he was dismissed, Karnataka still needed 29 runs with just two wickets in hand.Pandey found support from Vidwath Kaverappa and Vasuki Koushik to clinch an unlikely win. Vyshak had also picked up a five-for with the ball in Railways’ second innings to help limit Railways’ lead, which proved to be crucial. The win helped Karnataka jump to second in Group C, level on points with Tamil Nadu. The upset
Gujarat, the early pace-setters of the season, have stumbled big time. After winning their first two games, they’ve now lost two on the bounce, in addition to a drawn game due to the elements. This leaves them precariously placed, and outside the top three, in Group C going into the second half of the league phase.Their latest defeat was against the Wriddhiman Saha-led Tripura, a team that had only won nine Ranji games in all since they came into existence in 1985-86. However, this season alone, they’ve added two more wins and are third in the pool, which gives them a chance of pushing for the knockouts.Tripura’s win was all the more special as they rallied around in the second innings after conceding a 26-run lead, courtesy an outstanding effort from Manisankar Murasingh who scored 72 in their 343.Gujarat weren’t really in the chase of 318, slumping to 64 for 5 from where there was no turnaround. Parvez Sultan, the left-arm spinner, ended with a match haul of 10 for 116.The victory march
Mumbai recorded their fourth win in five games as they thumped Bengal by an innings and four runs at Eden Gardens. The turnaround was led by Shivam Dube, the captain, and debutant Suryansh Shedge, who added 144 for the fifth wicket on the opening day. From 87 for 4, they managed 412 in the first innings.Bengal were bundled out for 199 and 209, with only Anustup Majumdar (first innings) and Abishek Porel (second innings) standing tall with the bat. Fast bowler Mohit Awasthi recorded figures of 7 for 52 as Bengal were skittled in under 60 overs in the second innings.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After a successful tenure at Leverkusen, Alonso shifted base to Real Madrid this summer to replace Carlo Ancelotti. To fill in the boots of the Spaniard, sporting director Simon Rolfes turned his sight to former Manchester United boss Ten Hag. After Alonso's departure, a few players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Tah left the club, and Tapsoba is looked upon as a successor to the latter, who served the club for 10 seasons. Having joined the side back in 2020, Tapsoba is also the longest-serving player in the current squad.

  • WHAT TAPSOBA SAID

The defender said in an interview with : "I knew him from Ajax. His style of play is similar to that of Xabi Alonso, also in terms of the build-up of the game This fits my game perfectly."

He added: "Everything has changed. We came to Brazil and lost a lot of players. We have a new coach. We have to adapt for the coming season. That's our job. Of course, I have to take on more responsibility now. I've learned a lot from Jona, and now it's my turn. I'm trying to help the team as best I can, including as one of the leaders. Jona and I have talked about it, and he thinks now is the right time for me to take the next step. I want to be a leader—including as one of the team's vocal leaders."
