Rahul: 'Very unfortunate that Quinton has to miss out'

“He’ll just have to wait for some more time as Kyle Mayers is doing really well”

Quinton de Kock – “I’m not quite used to being on the side for so long but it’s all good as the team’s doing really well”•BCCI

KL Rahul has admitted he “feels bad” about Quinton de Kock’s continued absence from Lucknow Super Giants’ starting XI in IPL 2023, describing his omission as “very unfortunate”.De Kock was unavailable for Super Giants’ opening two games of the season while on international duty and Kyle Mayers, who filled in at the top of the order, made the most of his opportunity.Ahead of Wednesday night’s game against Rajasthan Royals, Mayers was Super Giants’ leading run-scorer for the season with 168 in five innings, including two half-centuries. He has also maintained a healthy strike rate of 168.00.Super Giants have used Mayers, Nicholas Pooran, Marcus Stoinis and one fast bowler – either Mark Wood, Romario Shepherd or Naveen-ul-Haq – as their four overseas players this season, and have been unwilling to alter that combination to accommodate de Kock despite his previous success for them.”It’s very unfortunate that someone like Quinton has to sit out,” Rahul, Super Giants’ captain, said at the toss ahead of their game in Jaipur. “But unfortunately, there are only four foreign players [per XI] that can play in this competition.”He’ll just have to wait for some more time. Kyle is doing really well. It’s a bit unfortunate. You feel bad. I’ve enjoyed playing and enjoyed opening with Quinton, but for now, he’s still not playing.”De Kock opened the batting alongside Rahul throughout the 2022 season as Super Giants reached the play-offs, scoring 508 runs at an average of 36.28 and a strike rate of 148.97. He was retained on a contract worth INR 6.75 crore ahead of this year, but has found himself running the drinks.”It’s been quite relaxed,” de Kock told Star Sports before Wednesday’s game. “I’m not quite used to being on the side for so long but it’s all good – the team’s doing really well so I guess that’s the most important thing.”It’s been chilled. I’ve made a couple more friends sitting on the side, learned a lot more with the boys and it’s been fun watching the guys.”He added that he has been working hard to keep himself fit and try to force his way into the side. “Put it this way: I don’t think I’ve gymed, run and practised as much as I have in the last two in my whole career,” de Kock said.

Etihad 8th, Amex 3rd, Emirates 2nd: Ranking every new stadium in PL history

Moving stadiums can give a football team a fresh lease of life.

Whether it means allowing thousands more fans to watch games each week, reimagining the design so seats feel closer to the pitch, or providing state-of-the-art facilities for players, a new stadium can also transform a club’s fortunes.

It can enhance the matchday atmosphere, boost revenue and attract top talent, all while giving supporters a modern and exciting place to cheer on their team.

Since the Premier League began in 1992, 19 teams have played football at a new home stadium. Some have left behind historic venues, while others have embraced modern masterpieces, but not every move has been a success.

Here, we have ranked all 19 of these new stadiums based on their design, atmosphere and the memorable moments they’ve seen since the move.

Ranking the best former Premier League stadiums

With a new age of football stadia emerging since the Premier League’s beginnings in the 1990s, we have said goodbye to some truly magical venues.

19

Brick Community Stadium (Wigan Athletic)

Opened: 1999

Wigan Athletic moved to the Brick Community Stadium in 1999, leaving Springfield Park. Formerly known as the JJB Stadium and then the DW Stadium, the ground has a capacity of 25,138 and features modern amenities, catering to football and rugby league events.

Wigan spent eight seasons playing Premier League football at the stadium, lifting the FA Cup in 2013.

18

MKM Stadium (Hull City)

Opened: 2002

A bit like the Brick Community Stadium, Hull City’s MKM Stadium caters for football and rugby league, serving as the home of the Tigers and Hull F.C. of the Super League.

Previously known as the KCOM Stadium, Hull City moved there in 2002 from Boothferry Park. Six years later, they achieved a historic milestone, earning promotion to the Premier League for the first time while playing at their new home.

Swansea.com Stadium (Swansea City)

Opened: 2005

Another club whose ground hosts football and rugby – this time with rugby union side Ospreys – Swansea City moved to the then-named Liberty Stadium in 2005, leaving behind Vetch Field.

Now known as the Swansea.com Stadium, it has a capacity of 21,088. While undeniably a step up from their former home in terms of facilities, it’s a little bland.

16

Cardiff City Stadium (Cardiff City)

Opened: 2009

The Cardiff City Stadium opened in 2009, replacing Ninian Park as the Welsh club’s home. Cardiff City secured promotion to the Premier League in 2013, with the stadium witnessing the celebratory 0-0 draw against Charlton Athletic that secured top-flight status.

It’s not a bad stadium, but is somewhat overshadowed by the much more impressive Millennium Stadium just down the road.

15

Gtech Community Stadium (Brentford)

Opened: 2020

Built with their Premier League ambitions in mind, Brentford moved to the Gtech Community Stadium in 2020, departing from their long-term home at Griffin Park.

Though the Bees have enjoyed remarkable success at the ground, it simply doesn’t rank highly here because of its tiny capacity of just 17,250 – which is far too small for the Premier League and a club of its stature.

14

Madejski Stadium (Reading)

Opened: 1998

Reading transitioned to the Madejski Stadium in 1998, leaving Elm Park behind. The Royals soon went on to enjoy two of the most successful seasons in their history at the ground – winning the Championship in 2005/06 before finishing eighth in the Premier League in their first top-flight season.

The stadium itself is decent, but it doesn’t particularly stand out from the crowd.

13

St Mary's Stadium (Southampton)

Opened: 2001

Southampton moved to St Mary’s Stadium in 2001 from their historic home at The Dell.

Although much larger, with a capacity of 32,384, St Mary’s lacks the unique atmosphere that made The Dell so special. Additionally, its location on the outskirts of Southampton can make it feel somewhat detached from the heart of the city, affecting the matchday experience.

12

Pride Park (Derby County)

Opened: 1997

Derby County moved to Pride Park in 1997 from the Baseball Ground.

Strangely enough, it was actually designed to resemble the Riverside Stadium, which opened a couple of years prior – and it has turned out to be quite similar: a large, modern and tidy-looking stadium that often lacks a strong atmosphere, and aesthetically speaking, doesn’t leave a particularly lasting impression.

11

Riverside Stadium (Middlesbrough)

Opened: 1995

With a capacity of 34,742, Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium, which the club moved to in 1995 from Ayresome Park, is currently one of the biggest in the United Kingdom outside the Premier League.

However, big isn’t always better, as the stadium can sometimes feel a bit too vast, especially when not full. Still, it looks quite nice and was home to Boro’s historic run to the UEFA Cup final in 2006.

10

Toughsheet Community Stadium (Bolton Wanderers)

Opened: 1997

Once home to legendary players like Jay-Jay Okocha, Youri Djorkaeff and Ivan Campo, the Toughsheet Community Stadium, formerly the Reebok Stadium, became Bolton Wanderers’ home in 1997 after their move from Burnden Park.

During the club’s peak years in the Premier League, the ground was often regarded as a fortress, with Bolton regularly finishing in mid-table and competing in European competitions.

Worry for Rangers as European giants plan £8.3m bid for "brilliant" star

A big European club are thought to be planning to table an offer for a “brilliant” Rangers player this summer, according to a fresh update regarding his future at Ibrox.

Rangers into Europa League quarter-finals

Barry Ferguson’s side edged their way into the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday night, following an extremely tense evening for all concerned at Ibrox.

Rangers may have taken a 3-1 lead with them into their home clash with Fenerbahce, but Jose Mourinho’s team won 2-0 inside 90 minutes, taking the game into extra-time, arguably looking the most likely to win it at that point.

Barry Ferguson

In the end, a penalty shootout was required to separate the victory, with Jack Butland proving to be the Gers’ hero, making two important saves as Ferguson’s men battled they way into the quarters.

Next up for Rangers in the competition are Athletic Bilbao, which promises to be another tough two-legged tie – there is also the small matter of Celtic at Parkhead in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday – and a potentially mouthwatering semi-final meeting with Manchester United could await after that.

Sevilla planning offer for "brilliant" Rangers ace

According to Vamos Mi Sevilla [via Sport Witness], Sevilla are planning an £8.3m bid for Rangers striker Hamza Igamane – the serial European winners have won the UEFA Cup/Europa League five times since the 2013/14 season.

Africa Foot claim that the La Liga side are concerned about the Gers’ asking price for one of their star attackers, however, with the club demanding £20m for his services instead.

Hamza Igamane

Losing Igamane for anything close to Sevilla’s bid in the summer window would be a massive blow for Rangers, and something that would cause plenty of dissatisfaction among the fanbase, so the Gers simply have to drive bids up towards the top number of £20m.

The Moroccan has scored nine goals in 18 Scottish Premiership starts this season, not to mention finding the net four times in as many appearances in the Europa League. He has many admirers, not least Derek Ferguson.

The lure of joining a club of Sevilla’s European pedigree could be big for Igamane, which will be a concern, but ultimately, 49ers Enterprises must play hardball when they come in and only entertain offers that match the asking price.

Forget Butland: Rangers hero is now playing like a £50m sensation

Rangers survived a scare to march on into the Europa League quarter-finals

ByRobbie Walls Mar 14, 2025

Ideally, though, the 22-year-old will decide that his long-term future belongs at Rangers anyway, meaning he leads the line for the Scottish giants for many years to come.

Moyes has unearthed his next Arteta at Everton in "special" £20k-p/w talent

Everton are moving forward, but all the same, David Moyes’ return has created a nostalgic feel to this Goodison Park, who are poignantly and perhaps fittingly preparing to depart for Bramley Moore.

A new era begins with an old dog, but Moyes is proven on Merseyside and indeed elsewhere, leading West Ham United through three successive campaigns on the continent and indeed winning the Conference League in 2022/23.

Everton manager DavidMoyes on the touchline before the match

Can he lead the Toffees back to a rich and lasting period? Moyes has already got to work shaping Sean Dyche’s squad to his design, with one member in particular carrying the qualities to become the Scot’s next version of Mikel Arteta.

Mikel Arteta under Moyes' wing

Younger Premier League fans will exclusively recognise Arteta for his time in the Arsenal dugout, taking a meandering outfit back to the forefront of domestic and European football.

However, he once roamed Premier League pitches at the heart of Arsene Wenger’s Gunners midfield, and before that, Moyes’ Everton.

Intelligent, silky and dynamic, Arteta bridged gaps between central- and attacking-midfield berths, with Moyes hailing him as a “complete” and “conscientious” player during the duo’s marriage.

Across 209 Everton appearances (all with Moyes at the helm), Arteta proved himself to be one of the most technically gifted footballers in the top flight from the offing, making the move to north London in August 2011 for a £10m fee after informing the Blues he wanted out and was willing to take a pay cut to make it happen.

It’s perhaps a testament to Moyes’ adoration of Arteta’s style during his playing days that he instantly moved to sign his next version of the Spanish maestro when arriving at Everton back in January.

Everton's new Arteta

Everton’s recruitment has been generally shoddy over the past decade, but Dyche and departing Director of Football Kevin Thelwell did make one or two good moves before leaving.

Chalkboard

It means Moyes has got players such as Iliman Ndiaye, Beto and Jake O’Brien to fashion into shape, all showing positive signs in recent months. However, the 61-year-old did need to dip into the winter market to sign Charly Alcaraz on loan from Brasileiro Serie A club Flamengo.

Everton midfielder Charly Alcaraz

Everton have the option to sign the attacking midfielder permanently for a shrewd £12m fee at the end of the season, and on the basis of the early evidence, the 22-year-old has talent in spades and could become a high-class player in Moyes’ system.

Positionally, Alcaraz has been around the block.

Although, saying that, the Argentina youth international has also partaken in a nomadic journey across the opening years of his career, Everton being his fifth club as a professional.

He even joined Juventus on loan last season, with the Serie A giants deciding against activating the £40m clause to land his signature for good. Even so, it denotes the high regard Alcaraz is held in.

Journalist Antonio Mango described him as a “special talent” in the past and it’s clear to see why. Alcaraz has the qualities to become a multi-functional general in the same vein as Arteta, especially when looking at his athletic ability through the lens of FBref’s data.

Though he hasn’t yet played enough in England for his metrics to be recorded, FBref record that Alcaraz ranks among the top 7% of midfielders in the Brazilian first tier in 2024 for shot-creating actions, the top 6% for progressive carries and the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90.

He’s got a range of attack-focused skills to damage Everton’s opponents, but also a combative and hard-working side that will see him find true success in Moyes’ system.

Charly Alcaraz celebrates for Everton

Arteta was renowned for his passing, but he also played out on the right wing and later shifted into a deeper-lying midfield berth. Alcaraz has natural-born creativity and an energetic approach besides, but he’s actually begun to showcase maturity in defensive phases, making an impression at Goodison Park.

Let’s examine that in closer detail.

Alcaraz has played five times in the Premier League so far for Everton, enjoying a goal-and-assist performance against Crystal Palace during a February win at Selhurst Park.

But he’s played his role and played it well over the past several weeks, with Sofascore noting the South American has won 52% of his ground duels at Everton having completed 82% of his passes and created four big chances along the way.

This bodes well indeed. The £20k-per-week star is proving he can grow as a player and contribute across different phases of any particular contest.

In 2022/23, when he plied his trade with imperilled Southampton, Alcaraz won only 36% of his duels and created just one big chance across 18 Premier League outings. There was a player in there to be sure, but he was unrefined and could hardly have been expected to offer more than he did – scoring four goals – for a wayward outfit spinning toward relegation.

Charly Alcaraz for Southampton

Moyes has only welcomed one player to the Everton first team so far, and in Alcaraz, he might just find a long-term star, especially with Abdoulaye Doucoure reaching the end of his contract this summer.

He’s already shifted between attacking and more central midfield roles for Everton this season, and indeed has all the trappings of a budding maestro in the middle of the field, one who could see Moyes restore the spirit of Arteta to his new-look Everton team.

Their best signing since Edouard: Celtic struck gold on £1.4m "superstar"

Celtic supporters have certainly been treated to a fair few top-class strikers down the years.

Henrik Larsson, simply known as the King of Kings, is widely considered to be Celtic’s best player of the modern era, scoring 242 goals in 315 appearances for the club across seven seasons.

Since his departure for Barcelona in 2004, plenty of Celtic strikers have been labelled ‘the best since Larsson’, but does this tag now belong to a current member of the squad?

The player in good question might just be their best since Odsonne Édouard was donning green and white.

How good was Odsonne Édouard at Celtic

Édouard, one of the many recipients of the ‘best since Larsson’ label, his given to him by former manager Martin O’Neill, certainly made a big impact at Parkhead.

Former Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard

The Frenchman arrived from Paris Saint-Germain, initially on loan in 2017, before his performances on the park convinced the club to make the move permanent for a then-club-record fee of £9m.

In total, Édouard scored 87 goals in 179 appearances for the Hoops, thereby on target every 140 minutes on average, before he was eventually sold to Crystal Palace at a profit, for £14m to be precise in August 2021.

It’s safe to say he was a phenomenal signing, winning the treble three times and picking up the club’s Player of the Season gong in 2019/20.

However, in terms of the value-for-money stakes, Édouard has certainly been eclipsed by Celtic’s current leading marksman.

Celtic's best signing since Odsonne Edouard

Daizen Maeda joined Celtic from Yokohama F. Marinos for a reported fee of £1.4m in January 2022, and it didn’t take long for him to make an impression, scoring less than four minutes into his debut against Hibs.

Subsequently, the Japanese forward has taken his tally to 57 goals for the Hoops, a humongous 28 of which have come this season, hence why former Hibs and Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart believes he has “stepped up a level” in recent months.

Meantime, John McGinley of the Celtic Way labels him a ‘superstar’, while right-back Alistair Johnston described him as “one of the most in-form players in Europe”.

Given Maeda’s scoring spree, it’s got us wondering, what’s the most goals a Celtic player has scored in a single season post-Larsson? Let’s find out.

As the table outlines, since Henrik Larsson’s 41-goal haul in 2003/04, only Leigh Griffiths has reached 40 goals in a single season for Celtic, leaving Maeda with only up to ten more matches to equal this record, requiring 12 goals, which certainly isn’t out of the question at all, is it?

Daizen Maeda

The Japanese forward does already have one record secured, becoming the first Celtic player to score four times in a single European Cup or Champions League campaign since Joe Craig in 1977/78.

According to Transfermarkt, Maeda’s valuation is at its highest point, thereby valued at around £9.2m.

Meantime, with speculation swirling surrounding his future, Michael Gannon of the Daily Record labels the striker ‘priceless’, while TEAMtalk believes Celtic would only sell for a ‘sizable fee’.

Thus, as alluded to earlier, having cost just £1.6m and now, unquestionably Celtic’s ‘best player’, Maeda must also be right up there as the club’s best value-for-money signing.

KKR seek to address top-order woes at high-scoring Chinnaswamy

Big picture: A tale of two top orders

After having conceded the highest IPL total at Eden Gardens, Kolkata Knight Riders will run into Royal Challengers Bangalore for another potential run-fest at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. In all, KKR have conceded three 200-plus scores across seven games this season, with the recent injury to Shardul Thakur also messing with the balance of their side.KKR’s issues at the top are more pressing: they have used five different opening pairs in seven matches, they have lost the most wickets (17) in the powerplay, and their run rate (7.80) during this phase is the second lowest among all teams this IPL. Only midway into the tournament, KKR have used all their eight overseas players so far, and are searching for stability on that front too.As for RCB, their top order has been central to their success. Faf du Plessis, who was once Chennai Super Kings’ designated pace hitter, has now raised his game against spin as well. Du Plessis and Virat Kohli have been the most prolific opening pair this IPL, tallying almost 500 runs, including two century stands. Glenn Maxwell has been in red-hot form, especially at the Chinnaswamy, rattling off three half-centuries in his last four innings at the venue. The brilliance of the trio has somewhat eased the burden on a misfiring middle order. With Mohammed Siraj being penetrative – both in the powerplay and at the death – and Harshal Patel getting his slower balls to dip sharply at batters once again, RCB will be looking to end their stretch of home games with another victory. They will be on the road for their next five matches before returning to the Chinnaswamy for their final league fixture, against Gujarat Titans, on May 21.

Team news: Hazlewood still a doubt for RCB

ESPNcricinfo understands that Josh Hazlewood is likely to sit out one more game before returning to action. If Hazlewood hasn’t recovered sufficiently from injury, David Willey will start again on Wednesday.

Toss and Impact Player strategy

Royal Challengers Bangalore
Du Plessis is also nursing a rib injury, and could once again be used as an Impact Player option by RCB. If they bat first, he could be subbed out for seamer Vijaykumar Vyshak or legspinner Karn Sharma after his batting shift.Possible XII: 1 Virat Kohli (capt), 2 , 3 Mahipal Lomror, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Suyash Prabhudessai, 6 Shahbaz Ahmed, 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Harshal Patel, 10 David Willey, 11 Mohammed Siraj, 12 Kolkata Knight Riders
Jason Roy, who didn’t open the batting against Super Kings at Eden Gardens after having hurt himself in the field, is set to return to the top. Thakur bowled at full tilt at the nets on the eve of the game, but it remains to be seen if he’s available for selection. Meanwhile, KKR’s use of the Impact Player rule has had a fairly consistent pattern with wristspinner Suyash Sharma starting if they bowl first, or Venkatesh Iyer starting if they bat first.Possible XII: 1 Jason Roy, 2 N Jagadeesan (wk), 3 , 4 Nitish Rana (capt), 5 Rinku Singh, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Sunil Narine, 8 David Wiese/Lockie Ferguson/Tim Southee, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Kulwant Khejroliya/Vaibhav Arora, 11 Varun Chakravarthy, 12

Stats that matter

  • There’s a case for KKR to match Sunil Narine up with du Plessis in the powerplay. The spinner has kept him to 47 off 67 balls while dismissing him twice in all T20s. Kohli has also struggled to get Narine away in T20 cricket: 137 runs off 141 balls while being dismissed four times.
  • Umesh Yadav has a strong head-to-head record against Maxwell in T20s, getting him four times in seven innings while giving up only 31 runs off 28 balls.
  • A total of 102 sixes have been hit at the Chinnaswamy in IPL 2023, the highest at a venue so far this season.

Pitch and conditions

Another easy-paced hit-through-the-line Chinnaswamy track is on the cards. The ball could swing early in the evening, especially if the overhead conditions are cloudy, and skid onto the bat later under lights.

Quotes

“If you take any game in the IPL for granted, that’s a big risk… what’s happened in the past is irrelevant tomorrow from 7.30pm.”
“The guys are out there training now, working their hardest to be the best version of themselves. There’s no rhyme or reason behind it.”
