PCB to write to ICC to 'lodge a protest' over crowd trouble in Sharjah

On-field incident between Asif Ali and Fareed Ahmed in nail-biting finish, before tempers flared in the stands

The PCB will write to the ICC to “lodge a protest” over the crowd trouble and “gruesome visuals” that followed the Afghanistan-Pakistan game at the Asia Cup.Addressing the media, PCB chairman Ramiz Raja said: “You can’t link hooliganism with cricket and this environment makes you sick. We will write to ICC, raise concerns, and do whatever we can because the visuals were gruesome.”This [crowd trouble after an Afghanistan-Pakistan game] didn’t happen for the first time. Wins and losses are a part of the game. It was a gruelling contest, but emotions should have been kept in control. Until the environment is right, you can’t grow and go forward as a cricket-playing nation.”So we are going to express our anguish and frustration to the ICC. We owe it to our fans, anything could have happened… Our team could have been in danger… So whatever the protocol is we will follow that and lodge our protest.”Raja is also part of the ICC’s working committee tasked with reviewing the state of cricket and how it is run in Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover of the country last year.Following a spectacular, see-sawing game in Sharjah, in which Afghanistan were fighting hard to stay in the tournament only for Pakistan’s last-wicket pair to dramatically clinch their own spot in the final, crowd trouble erupted in the stands. Several Afghanistan fans were detained by the Sharjah police following the incident. However, no arrests were made.Tempers flared as soon as Pakistan brought up victory courtesy Naseem Shah’s twin sixes in the final over. In the aftermath, fans, believed to be Afghanistan supporters, began throwing punches at people wearing Pakistan jerseys.ESPNcricinfo understands the trigger for the incident was Asif Ali’s run-in with Afghanistan fast bowler Fareed Ahmad after he had been dismissed. A visibly charged-up Fareed threw celebratory air-punches very close to Asif’s face, who responded by pushing Fareed back and raising his bat at his face. Both players exchanged heated words before Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Umarzai and Pakistan’s Hasan Ali stepped in to calm things down.Footage captured in the stands also showed fans pulling out bucket seats and flinging them at each other. Cushioned seats were also torn up. Considerable damage had been done by the time the ground authorities and the police swung into action. The organisers quickly ushered the public out of the stadium to prevent any further damage. The Afghanistan Cricket Board put out two tweets on September 8 calling for people to “work together” to bring the “cricket fraternity closer”, and “somehow try to spread love”. “Cricket is regarded as a phenomenon of harmony and more intimate relations between nations. Let’s work together for bringing the cricket fraternity closer. Cricket does not allow for us to show negative emotions on the field and turn the friendship atmosphere into violence,” one of the tweets read. The other tweet was: Earlier on social media, former Afghanistan Cricket Board CEO Shafiq Stanikzai had called for a ban on Asif for his aggression. “This is stupidity at extreme level by Asif Ali and should be banned from the rest of the tournament, any bowler has the right to celebrate but being physical is not acceptable at all,” Stanikzai had tweeted. This elicited a response from former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar. “Afghan players put right back into their place by 19-year-old kid Naseem Shah. Unforgettable match against people we have loved & supported always. ,” (But bad behaviour and arrogance showed them in poor light).Afghanistan and Pakistan are set to next face each other on October 19, in a warm-up match in Brisbane in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup. The teams are not in the same group in the first stage of the tournament.Flashpoints between Afghanistan and Pakistan fans are not an uncommon occurrence. At last year’s T20 World Cup, “thousands of ticketless fans” from both teams tried to force entry into the stadium in Dubai. When this was met with resistance by the local ground authorities and private security agencies, heated exchanges between both sets of fans led to the external barriers being pushed over.Prior to that, at the 2019 ODI World Cup, security personnel appeared to underestimate the feeling between the fans of the two countries, who began fighting in the stands, hurling rubbish on the field and invading the pitch even as the players scrambled to reach their respective dressing rooms. The increased number of incidents stems to some degree from longstanding and complex geopolitical tensions between the two countries. But the players themselves have largely been quite cordial with each other. Afghanistan’s have taken an active part in the Pakistan Super League and Pakistan greats like Inzamam-ul-Haq and Rashid Latif have been part of Afghanistan’s coaching staff. Umar Gul is their current bowling coach.

Chelsea now battling Arsenal in race to sign £68m "elite talent"

Chelsea are now among the favourites to win the race for an “elite talent” with a £68m release clause, according to a report.

Maresca keen to strengthen in January

Enzo Maresca is looking to bring in reinforcements in multiple positions this month, with the manager trying to get his side’s season back on track after a recent downturn in form.

One area in which the Blues are keen to strengthen is left-wing, and they have now made an approach to sign Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, who could cost around £60m.

Garnacho is not the only Man United player Chelsea are interested in signing, with central midfielder Kobbie Mainoo also being targeted, while the Blues are now in pole position to sign Deportivo La Coruna winger Yeremay Hernandez.

Given that Brighton & Hove Albion have made contact over a deal to sign Tosin Adarabioyo, Maresca may also be tasked with bringing in a new defender this month, and there has now been an update on their pursuit of Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande.

Chelsea make enquiry to sign star who can be Maresca's own Kvaratskhelia

Chelsea are showing interest in the Borussia Dortmund youngster.

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 18, 2025

Having first made an approach for the defender back in November, the Blues are now leading the race for Diomande’s signature, according to a report from CaughtOffside.

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

Arsenal and Manchester United are also in the race for the centre-back’s signature, but Chelsea are believed to be among the favourites.

The Sporting star is keen to move to the Premier League and also favours a move to London, which could give Maresca’s side the edge over Man Utd in negotiations.

In order to get a deal done, the Blues may have to be willing to spend big, as the 21-year-old has an €80m (£68m) release clause included in his contract with Sporting.

Diomande showing great potential

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has lavished praise on the youngster, tipping him to be capable of playing at the very highest level.

The 6 foot 3 defender has established himself as a key player for Sporting over the past two seasons, and he is showing signs he could be capable of making the step up to a club the size of Chelsea.

With Maresca favouring a possession-based style of play, it is important to sign players capable of building up from the back, and the Ivorian ranks in the 99th percentile for his pass completion rate per 90 over the past year.

As such, it is exciting news that Chelsea are now one of the favourites to sign Diomande, but they should look to get a deal done for lower than the release clause given that he is still unproven in a major European league.

Romano: Everton make "two proposals" to sign "dangerous" 22 y/o attacker

A foreign club have “received two proposals” from Everton ahead of the potential signing of a “dangerous” player at the club, according to a fresh claim from Fabrizio Romano.

Everton transfer news

The Blues are impressing greatly under David Moyes, with the Scot completely turning things around since replacing Sean Dyche as manager last month. Saturday’s 4-0 win at home to Leicester City further suggested that they won’t be in danger of relegation from the Premier League this season.

Everton could look to do some late business in the January transfer window, too, with Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi linked with a move to Goodison Park. He has found it tough to enjoy regular starts in 2024/25, due to the inspired form of Chris Wood leading the line.

The Merseysiders are also believed to have been given the opportunity to sign AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze, with the Serie A giants in need of generating funds to ease their finances. They are far from the only club to be in the race, though.

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has had to make do with a squad role this season, falling down the pecking order, and the Englishman is reportedly open to the idea of moving to Everton late in the day.

Everton make contact over "dangerous" attacker

Taking to X, Romano claims that Freiburg have “received two proposals” from Everton for attacking midfielder Merlin Rohl, as they look to strike a deal before Monday’s deadline, but his current club have turned them down and are set to keep the player after talks.

It appears as though Everton will be unsuccessful in their attempts to snap up the 22-year-old, but if things change suddenly, he could be a fantastic addition for Moyes.

Rohl is a young player with so much long-term potential, having already bagged nine goal contributions (three goals and six assists) in 50 appearances for Freiburg.

He hasn’t been without admirers over the years, too, with Antonio Di Salvo describing him as “dangerous” and Christian Streich saying of him: “Merlin’s taking big strides after his injury troubles. He’s got pace, great movement. He can be a real difference-maker, and he completely identifies with the club.”

While Everton’s aforementioned 4-0 triumph over Leicester suggests that all is well in an attacking sense, more firepower is definitely required in the final third, which is where Rohl could be an ideal signing.

Not just Beto: Everton star who won 100% duels can save Moyes millions

ByRoss Kilvington Feb 1, 2025

Predominantly an attacking midfielder, the German can also excel on the right wing, so he would be a versatile addition who could help take the Blues up another gear. Should a transfer not happen in this window, they should look to bring him in this summer instead.

Will Sutherland's maiden first-class hundred leads Victoria's recovery

Marcus Harris also played a vital innings after South Australia had made early inroads

AAP06-Oct-2022Allrounder Will Sutherland posted his maiden Sheffield Shield century to keep Victoria in the contest against South Australia at Karen Rolton Oval. They were in all sorts of trouble at 4 for 54 and 6 for 137 before Sutherland came to the rescue with the finest knock of his young career. The 22-year-old struck 100 off 168 balls, including nine fours and three sixes, to lift Victoria to 9 for 264 at stumps on day one.His heroics were all the more surprising given he entered the match with a first-class average of just 14.33 from 21 matches and with a top score of 34 not out.Sutherland was also left shaken by a big hit to the helmet when he was yet to score. He was given the all clear to continue after an on-field medical assessment, and he gained in confidence the longer his innings went.Related

Paine falls cheaply on first-class return as Queensland take charge

South Australia’s tactic of bowling short to him soon came unstuck as Sutherland began to unleash a series of lusty blows.Sutherland’s knock came on the same day that his sister, Annabel Sutherland, posted 68 off 76 balls in Victoria’s WNCL win over Tasmania. She posted a century two days earlier in what has proven to be a magical week for the talented family.”It’s what Alex Carey was saying out in the middle – saying the Sutherlands are in good form,” Sutherland said. “I’ve got a long way to go to catch up with her and the way she’s batting. But it’s good to be in the runs. I do work very hard on my batting, so it’s good to see some reward.”Although Will Sutherland was able to cash in, Will Pucovski missed out completely. He survived a strong lbw shout from Harry Conway on the first ball of the innings. Three balls later he was out when he edged behind. It was one of five catches for wicketkeeper Alex Carey across the day.Peter Handscomb, Nic Maddinson and Matt Short all fell cheaply before lunch, while Sam Harper was dismissed after the break to leave Victoria reeling at 5 for 92.The damage would have been far worse if it wasn’t for Marcus Harris, who kept his calm amid the carnage to post a finely-crafted 85 off 170 balls. Once he departed, Sutherland took over in dominant fashion to further drag Victoria to safety. His innings was eventually ended by a mesmerising Jordan Buckingham delivery that dramatically swung back in to clip the off stump bail.Buckingham finished the day with figures of 3 for 52, while David Grant and Wes Agar also enjoyed success.Pucovski scored an unbeaten 193 for a Victorian second XI last month in his return from his latest concussion. Although he was dismissed cheaply on Thursday in his first Shield hit-out of the season, he will get another chance to shine in Victoria’s second innings.

Southampton must sell a flop who earns more than Walker-Peters & Fernandes

Ivan Juric has been unable to turn around the Southampton sinking ship since his arrival to the South Coast in late December, as the Saints stare a dire relegation straight in the face.

The Premier League table doesn’t lie with Southampton rock bottom of the pile currently on just six points, with an alarming ten point gap opening up already between the division’s basement club and Wolverhampton Wanderers in 17th position.

Whilst survival looks a tall order, there are a few faces in Juric’s camp that will continue to hold their heads high as bright sparks during these bleak times.

Southampton's top performers this season

One of those faces is Mateus Fernandes, who has looked lively for his lowly side even as games have slipped out of their grasp.

He was a standout performer during Southampton’s recent 3-1 loss at Old Trafford with three shots tallied up on Andre Onana’s shaky goal alongside two successful dribbles being registered, whilst the promising Portuguese midfielder also assisted Paul Onuachu’s late header away at Nottingham Forest last time out as the Saints flickered into life at the death.

Away from the Saints number 18, there has also been the occasional brilliance of youth product Tyler Dibling in attack who has managed to pick up two Premier League goals, whilst Kyle Walker-Peters has also threatened to get back to his blistering best.

Even in a Southampton side that has only mustered up a pitiful 15 top-flight strikes, Walker-Peters has still collected two assists, with a number of clubs reportedly circling for his services now amidst talk he will turn down any contract extension put forward to him.

Juric will hope he can keep a firm grip on the 5 foot 8 full-backs this month – away from all this speculation – but the Croat is unlikely to put up much of a fight to hold onto another defender on the contrary.

The latest on Charlie Taylor's future at Southampton

As per Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas earlier this month, Charlie Taylor is one figure Juric will be looking to offload this January, with other names on Thomas’ list looking to exit St Mary’s being Maxwel Cornet and Ben Brereton Diaz, as the latter now finds himself on loan at Sheffield United.

Therefore, Taylor could be the next fringe presence to be moved on, considering he has barely featured for the South Coast side this season after moving to the newly promoted team from Burnley last window.

Indeed, the ex-Clarets man has only started two times for his relegation-doomed outfit in the Premier League, with his last showing in the league seeing him introduced into the game at the half-time interval, only for the Saints to be resoundingly trounced 5-0 by Brentford.

Whilst he is by no means the only individual guilty of being an underperformer when you consider Southampton’s rock-bottom status, his steep wage will also be another major factor as to why there’s an increased hunger to get him off the books this January.

Looking at the table above, away from his poor defensive numbers, Taylor also surprisingly rakes in a hefty £30k-per-week pay packet, which means he earns more than both the aforementioned Walker-Peters and Fernandes.

The far brighter pair both earn £20k-per-week away from Taylor’s high earnings, with the Saints defender’s wage costs over the full year coming in at an extortionate £1.5m despite such a lack of game-time.

Therefore, it makes a lot of sense why Southampton want to get rid of the 31-year-old defender this month, as Juric attempts everything in his power to boost spirits to try and build some positive form.

Leeds struck gold by selling £20m star who’s being outscored by Joseph

The January transfer window officially closed for business on Monday of last week and Leeds United did not make a single first-team addition to their squad.

Despite their rivals making moves to bolster their squads, notably Sheffield United’s swoops for Tom Cannon and Ben Brereton Diaz and Sunderland’s move for Enzo Le Fee, the Whites opted against any winter deals.

The West Yorkshire outfit are currently competing for promotion to the Premier League and they are sat at the top of the Championship table as it stands, hoping that the squad from the first half of the season can remain consistent and push them over the line.

Daniel Farke’s men beat Coventry City 2-0 in their last league matches, which included Joel Piroe taking his tally for the season to 13 goals in the second tier.

The Dutch forward was, however, rested for the 2-0 defeat to Millwall in the FA Cup, as Mateo Joseph led the line for the Whites and failed to take his opportunity to impress.

Football FanCast published an article imploring Farke to instantly drop the Spaniard after the match, which was another blow to his chances of being a regular starter for Leeds.

Mateo Joseph's form this season

The Spain U21 international started the 2024/25 campaign as the first-choice number nine ahead of Piroe in the Championship, but failed to make sure that he retained his place in the side.

Joseph started the first eight matches of the season, in the second tier, and only scored one goal, which was a close-range finish in the 2-0 win over Hull City at Elland Road.

The young marksman, simply, did not offer enough of a threat in the final third and was eventually replaced by Piroe, who, as aforementioned, has racked up 13 goals in the Championship this season.

At the age of 21, Joseph still has plenty of time left to develop and improve as a player in the years to come, but the Whites will hope that he can add more consistency to his performances at the top end of the pitch as soon as possible, with promotion on the line this season.

As you can see in the table above, the Leeds striker has not made the most of the high-quality opportunities that his teammates have created for him this season, as he has underperformed his xG by roughly two goals.

The 21-year-old gem has, however, created four ‘big chances’ in 11 starts, which shows that he does offer a decent amount of creativity as a centre-forward, but it is his finishing that, clearly, still needs a lot of work before he can be a regular starter in the Championship for Farke.

Despite Joseph’s struggles this season, the Spanish attacker has still managed to outscore a player who Leeds sold for a huge amount of money last year.

Leeds hit the jackpot selling £20m star

Back in February of last year, Premier League side Bournemouth agreed a fee of £20m to sign Colombia international Luis Sinisterra from the Whites ahead of the summer transfer window.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Leeds had snapped the forward up from Dutch club Feyenoord in the summer of 2022, for a reported fee of £21m, as Jesse Marsch brought him in to bolster his attack for the 2022/23 campaign.

Unfortunately, the young winger missed a whopping 16 games through injury, suffering muscle, ankle, and foot issues throughout the Premier League season.

As you can see in the table above, Sinisterra did offer a decent goal threat in the matches that he was available for but failed to offer anything in the way of creativity.

Leeds opted to send him out on loan to Bournemouth for the 2023/24 campaign after they were relegated to the Championship, and he went on to score two goals and provide two assists in 20 Premier League games for the Cherries.

He did enough to earn a £20m move to the Vitality Stadium and it currently looks as though the Whites hit the jackpot by cashing in on him for that amount of money.

How Luis Sinisterra's 24/25 season has gone so far

The 25-year-old forward officially completed his move to Bournemouth last summer and this has been his first season as a permanent player at the club.

Unfortunately, his injury issues have continued to plague him. The Colombian attacker is currently sidelined with a hamstring issue that has kept him out of action since October, causing him to miss 18 matches and counting.

luis-sinisterra-leeds-united-jaidon-anthony-bournemouth-transfer-farke

This suggests that the Whites played a blinder by recouping £20m for the winger because the injury issues that disrupted his time at Elland Road have continued to cause him issues on the south coast.

His performances in the Premier League, when fit, this season also do not suggest that the £20m spent on his services has been good value for money for the Cherries so far.

As you can see in the table above, Sinisterra has offered a decent, but not outstanding, at the top end of the pitch for Bournemouth in the top-flight when available this season.

The Colombia international has, therefore, scored two fewer league goals and registered two fewer assists than Joseph in the league, albeit at different levels, this term.

Sinisterra has not offered enough, in terms of quality in the final third or availability to be selected, to justify the money spent to secure his services last summer, which suggests that Leeds hit the jackpot by cashing in on him for a fee of £20m.

The West Yorkshire outfit will, now, be hoping that the Bournemouth flop does not go on to prove them massively wrong, and that Joseph can improve his output in the final third as he gains more first-team experience.

Chelsea player ratings vs Everton: Moises Caicedo's majestic! Ecuadorian bosses it as unbeatable Robert Sanchez has his best day as a Blue

Enzo Maresca's side edged out the Toffees at Stamford Bridge as they kept themselves right in the mix for Champions League qualification

Chelsea managed to cling on and secure a vital 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday, with Robert Sanchez forced into a couple of big saves after Nicolas Jackson had given the hosts a first-half lead.

The Blues were by far the better team in the first period, as they managed to progress the ball quickly through Everton's midfield without losing the control Enzo Maresca clearly demands from his side. Their reward came in the 27th minute, when Trevoh Chalobah stepped in to dispossess a studious Beto. From there, Enzo Fernandez quickly got the ball into Nicolas Jackson's feet, who turned and fired home from 25 yards out.

Rather than press home their advantage, Chelsea allowed the visitors to grow into the game. Sanchez was called into action as the Toffees pushed forward searching for an equaliser, first making a diving stop from Beto's snapshot on the hour before denying a Dwight McNeil volley with an acrobatic save towards the end to preserve his clean sheet.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Robert Sanchez (8/10):

Smart stop to deny a Beto snapshot on the hour. Made two more crucial saves to spare Chelsea's blushes.

    Moises Caicedo (8/10):

An all-action display from the moonlighting midfielder. Hard in the tackle as always, and seamlessly slotted back into midfield in the second half.

    Trevoh Chalobah (7/10):

Picked Beto's pocket in the build-up to the opener. Never looked rushed. Could be making this position his own, finally.

    Levi Colwill (7/10):

The senior partner in a burgeoning partnership. Dependable.

    Marc Cucrella (7/10):

The final piece in a solid back-four performance by the Blues. Timed his tackles well, and stung Pickford's gloves with a long-range effort.

    Midfield

    Romeo Lavia (5/10):

Worked hard as always. Still finding his way after a stop-start season.

    Enzo Fernandez (5/10):

Progressed the ball into Jackson's feet to facilitate the first goal. Calm and measured in the first half, lost control in the second.

    Cole Palmer (4/10):

Peripheral again. When he did get on the ball, was liable to force himself down blind allies.

    Attack

    Pedro Neto (6/10):

Used his pace to worry Vitaliy Mykolenko. Delivery from dead balls was hit-and-miss.

    Nicolas Jackson (7/10):

Finally got his goal. Lost his way in the second half, getting caught in possession and inviting pressure.

    Noni Madueke (7/10):

Made a bright start and looked threatening throughout. Forced multiple top-quality saves out of Pickford.

    Subs & Manager

    Reece James (5/10):

Calm presence off the bench. Didn't get to show his attacking prowess as Everton grew into the game.

    Jadon Sancho (N/A):

Very little time to influence the game. Came on for the busy Madueke and didn't replicate his energy.

    Tyrique George (N/A):

    On for the final minutes.

    Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (N/A):

    Introduced late on.

    Enzo Maresca (5/10):

Watching from the stands owing to a suspension, his team fell into a trap in the second half, slowing down the game rather than pushing for a second.
