Derbyshire 130 (Dal 55, Pennington 4-36) and 343 (Dal 112*, McKiernan 71, Madsen 69) beat Worcestershire 185 (Kashif 52, Aitchison 4-40) and 190 (Roderick 53*, Dal 5-40, Aitchison 3-55) by 98 runsAnuj Dal completed a superb all-round performance with a crucial intervention with the ball as Derbyshire overcame Worcestershire by 98 runs in the LV=Insurance County Championship match at New Road.Dal followed up a first-innings fifty and then a superb century with a career best return of 5 for 40 off 15 overs as Worcestershire were dismissed for 190 in 64.1 overs. The all-rounder initially struck three times in the space of seven balls to break Worcestershire’s resistance after they had resumed on 108 for 5 in pursuit of a 289 target. He made the crucial breakthrough when trapping Jack Haynes lbw for 45 after a partnership of 92 with Gareth Roderick (53 not out).Dal then sent back Joe Leach, and Josh Baker in quick succession to effectively seal a third Championship win of the campaign for the Peakites. It capped a tremendous fightback by the visitors who faced several positions of adversity in the game. They showed the character and spirit instilled into them by Head Coach, Mickey Arthur, since he arrived at the Incora County Ground this season.Derbyshire are now firmly in the race for a promotion spot for when they return to Championship action after the Royal London Cup.But Worcestershire were left to reflect on failing to press home a position of strength for the second home game. They had established a first-innings lead of 132 against Glamorgan and ended up being edged out by three wickets on a bowler-friendly surface. This time they reduced Derbyshire to 14 for 5 in their first innings and then 92 for 5 in the second when their lead was just 37.A third defeat of the campaign was a blow to their own promotion hopes.Haynes and Roderick were relatively untroubled during the opening hour of the day but the introduction of Dal at 143 for 5 started a swift decline by Worcestershire.Haynes had battled away for nearly three hours for his 45 before he pushed forward to Dal and was lbw.Leach lasted only two balls before he drove at Dal and picked out Hilton Cartwright at cover.Baker lost his off stump after offering no shot and keeper Brooke Guest claimed his ninth catch of the match from a Dillon Pennington edge.Roderick had time to complete his maiden Championship half century for Worcestershire off 126 balls before Muhammed Hasnain edged Sam Conners to second slip to seal Derbyshire’s win.

Sheffield Wednesday in contact to sign 24 y/o int’l with "blistering pace"

Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly made an enquiry to sign an international attacker who has “blistering pace”, according to a journalist.

Sheffield Wednesday transfer rumours

It has been a quiet January transfer window at Hillsborough so far and not the one Danny Rohl would have been hoping for. The manager decided to remain at the Championship club amid interest from Southampton and Hamburg and hinted at the end of 2024 about Wednesday taking the “next step” and looking to “attack” the winter market.

“The most important key point is that I’m here and I decide to stay here. I feel very well. In football there are a lot of rumours around a person if you are successful – it’s a normal way.

“I’m very clear in my mind what I want to do. I know we have started a journey 14 months ago and I know my team is still hungry for more and we want to develop and make the next step. I spoke a lot about the topic of what I want to do and see but also what we have to do.

“The next opportunity is in 12 days [when the transfer window opens] and let’s see what we are doing. If we really want to attack or we are just talking.”

That hasn’t happened in the first half of the January window, although there have been names mentioned in the media as targets, such as Ipswich Town full-back Harry Clarke and Brisbane Roar attacker Thomas Waddingham.

Now, it seems as if Wednesday have made a move for a speedy attacker, but they haven’t had the answer they were hoping for.

Sheffield Wednesday in contact for Rangers attacker

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Sheffield Wednesday have made an enquiry to sign Rangers attacker Rabbi Matondo.

However, despite the interest from the Owls and second-tier rivals Sunderland, Rangers have agreed a deal for the Wales international to join an unnamed European club.

Matondo, aged 24, is a Wales international who has been on the books at Ibrox since 2022 and has come in for praise for his “blistering pace” from pundit Kris Boyd, who previously said:

“With that pace he’s got, he was lightning. We’ve not seen it enough in a Rangers jersey but you just kind of get the feeling that, the last few weeks… maybe because of Ryan Kent before, he always kind of thought ‘I’m not going to get in the team’, but with Ryan Kent moving on and there’s not really been anybody cemented that place at this moment at time, and there’s one thing with Rabbi Matondo – he has got blistering pace.”

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

Capable of playing on the left wing, right wing or as a second striker, Matondo could have been a handy addition for the second half of the campaign under Rohl, but he’ll have to look elsewhere for a final third signing.

Was Nemanja Matic right about Andre Onana being 'one of the worst' goalkeepers in Man Utd history? Ranking the Red Devils' most disappointing shot-stoppers after No.1's Europa League nightmare against Lyon

The keeper is under the spotlight after two costly errors against Lyon – but how does he compare with others who struggled at Old Trafford?

Andre Onana put huge pressure on himself before Manchester United's Europa League clash with Lyon and when the game began, he caved in to it. Onana had become one of the main characters ahead of the quarter-final first leg by first declaring that the Red Devils were "way better" than the Ligue 1 outfit a few days earlier.

Nemanja Matic responded to his comments in the most brutal manner by labelling him "one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United's history" but Onana did not need to rise to it. He could have let his performance do the talking. Instead he came back with a spiky response about winning trophies and was ridiculed for it. After all, Matic had won two Premier League titles with Chelsea.

But the most ridiculous thing was Onana's performance at the Groupama Stadium. He feebly let Thiago Almada's free-kick, which was intended as a cross, slip past him. Paul Scholes rightly labelled it "a terrible goalkeeping error" and everyone on social media was saying the same thing: Matic was right.

It was the eighth error leading to a goal made by the Cameroonian in all competitions, more than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League since he joined United in 2023. But United responded well to the setback and looked to be on their way to a crucial victory thanks to headers from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee. Lyon came back at them in the last minute though and Onana let United down again, pushing a central shot from Georges Mikautadze straight back into the danger zone and at the feet of the last person you would want it to fall to: Lyon talisman Rayan Cherki.

Now United must beat Lyon at Old Trafford next week to reach the Europa League semi-finals and keep their nightmare season alive, when a draw would have been enough had they been able to cling on. But the errors are likely to have bigger ramifications for United and Onana. How can the club continue with a goalkeeper who is so unreliable, who rival players are openly laughing about?

So after one of the lowest points of his already dismal United career, GOAL asks whether Matic is right and if Onana is indeed the worst goalkeeper United have had in the Premier League era….

Getty8Ben Foster

Foster was a long-term project of Sir Alex Ferguson's that ultimately did not work out. He was by no means a disaster compared to the other goalkeepers on this list, but he had the chance to become the club's first English No.1 in the Premier League era and could not take it.

Foster was back-up to Edwin van der Sar for two seasons and his highlight was winning the 2009 League Cup after a penalty shootout victory over Tottenham. An injury to the Dutch veteran at the start of the following campaign gave Foster a golden opportunity to prove he should be United's first-choice. However, costly errors against Arsenal, Manchester City, and Sunderland saw him removed from the starting XI as soon as Van der Sar returned to full fitness and by the end of the season he was gone.

AdvertisementGetty7Mark Bosnich

The Australian can claim to be the only player that Ferguson signed twice. He made two appearances for United in the pre-Premier League era before returning Down Under when his visa expired. After developing into one of the division's top goalkeepers with Aston Villa, Bosnich returned to United in 1999 following Schmeichel's departure.

Replacing the Great Dane was a daunting task for anyone, but Bosnich did not help his cause, according to Ferguson, who described him as "a terrible professional". Among his misdemeanours were turning up to training three hours late and overeating. After one match at Wimbledon, Ferguson claimed the goalkeeper ate everything on the menu before ordering a Chinese takeaway when he got home.

Still, Bosnich made the most appearances of United's three goalkeepers in that first post-Schmeichel season as the Red Devils romped to the Premier League title and won the Intercontinental Cup. He played no part in his second season, though, and left for Chelsea in January 2001. A year later he tested positive for cocaine.

Getty6Tim Howard

The American goalkeeper was unknown in England when he signed for United in 2003, and to tell the truth he never quite dealt with the pressure. There were some acrobatic saves in his first few months, but Howard's impressive start unravelled in the Champions League last-16 clash with Jose Mourinho's Porto. Howard spilled a late free-kick into the path of Costinha, who scored to send United out and spark the young Portuguese upstart coach's unforgettable knee slide celebration across the Old Trafford turf.

Howard's confidence never recovered and so began a battle for the No.1 spot between him and Roy Carroll over the next 14 months. Neither goalkeeper could truly convince Ferguson they were up to the task, and the ultimate winner was Van der Sar, who signed from Fulham in 2005 and remained first-choice until he retired six years later.

Getty5Roy Carroll

The Northern Ireland 'keeper began life at United as Fabien Barthez's understudy and eventually graduated to No.1 in the 2004-05 campaign after finally winning the battle with Howard.

He was an ultimately unremarkable goalkeeper, though, and like his American rival for the jersey, cracked under pressure, above all in the Champions League last-16 defeat to AC Milan. He also couldn't save a single penalty in the shootout defeat to Arsenal in the 2005 FA Cup final.

Carroll's most high-profile mistake for United did not lead to a goal, however. That was when he spilled Pedro Mendes' looping shot from near halfway over his own line against Tottenham, but managed to scramble the ball away without the referee or his assistant noticing. The officials' error could not save Carroll's United career, however, and he was released in May 2005.

Chelsea get scathing reply from Crystal Palace to opening Marc Guehi bid

Chelsea have been handed a damning response to their first January offer for Crystal Palace stalwart Marc Guehi, with Enzo Maresca’s side believed to be seriously keen on re-signing the England international before February 3.

Injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile have intensified the need for another world-class centre-back, and one who could be a fixture in Maresca’s backline for years to come.

Chelsea have been scouring the market for another central defender for months, even before Fofana and Badiashile were confined to the treatment table, and it is believed bringing one in is their top transfer priority for the winter (Simon Phillips).

There are believed to be a few interesting names on their shortlist, from both abroad and in the Premier League.

Benfica’s Antonio Silva and Tomas Araujo are under consideration at Stamford Bridge, as are Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi and Dean Huijsen (Simon Phillips), with other reports suggesting that Chelsea are also monitoring Barcelona’s Jules Koundé and Ronald Araujo.

However, as of now, it is Guehi who appears to be grabbing all the headlines as a top centre-back target. The 24-year-old’s stellar 2024 saw him perform impressively at the Euros with England, filling in for the injured Harry Maguire to great effect, and he stood out as one of Palace’s star players at club level.

Eagles chairman Steve Parish rejected a plethora of summer bids from Newcastle United to keep hold of their influential defender, and Guehi has rewarded Palace with an array of accomplished performances this campaign.

The former Chelsea man has started 19 out of 20 league games for Palace this season as a mainstay of Oliver Glasner’s back three, prompting serious interest from his old club.

Now, according to a report from The Sun, that interest has materialised into a formal winter bid.

Chelsea receive reply to opening Marc Guehi bid

As per the newspaper on their live blog [January 7, 03:00], Chelsea have tabled a “cheeky” opening January bid for Guehi, but Palace are far from impressed with their first approach.

The Three Lions ace is valued at around £55 million, with a Selhurst Park source telling The Sun that Chelsea’s offer is far below his asking price and deemed “silly”. As a result, Palace are set to snub their latest advances.

“Their offer was a long way off being a fair price,” said the source. “It was silly really, and they need to offer more to even have a hope of getting a deal done.”

Guehi has just 18 months left on his contract, perhaps explaining Chelsea’s decision to make a lower financial proposal than expected, but the player’s quality and pedigree highlights why Parish is still demanding a hefty sum to sell mid-season.

“When he plays for England he probably goes up another level as well,” said ex-interim England boss Lee Carsley.

“I still think there is a lot more to come from Marc. Physically, he’s fast and he’s aggressive. On the ball, he is excellent as well so he just needs to keep improving.”

Nottingham Forest plotting Gibbs-White repeat in deal to sign "special" ace

Looking to steal the show on and off the pitch this season, Nottingham Forest are now reportedly plotting a move to sign a rival star in a repeat of their previous deal to sign Morgan Gibbs-White.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

Even whilst shocking the rest of the Premier League by competing for Champions League qualification and perhaps even the title itself, Forest are seemingly in pursuit of a star striker this month. The likes of Baris Alper Yilmaz and, most recently, Yoane Wissa have emerged on the radar of the Midlands club as they seek further firepower alongside talisman Chris Wood.

Reports have even gone as far as to suggest that Forest have submitted a bid worth £22m to sign Wissa only for Brentford to deem that offer below their valuation of the forward. With plenty of time still to go in the January transfer window, however, Forest could yet go again in pursuit of Wissa in what would be an excellent mid-season addition.

Nottingham Forest are hoping to make a real top-four push

ByJoe Nuttall Jan 21, 2025

Meanwhile, if it’s not to be the Brentford man then another option could emerge. Those at the City Ground are certainly in a position to present an attractive project these days and reports suggest that it may even be attractive enough to sign a rival star.

According to Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail, Nottingham Forest are now plotting a move to sign Matheus Cunha from Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers in an “audacious” move which would instantly steal the headlines.

It wouldn’t be the first time that such a move has taken place either, with Gibbs-White opting to leave Wolves in favour of Forest in a deal worth a reported £42.5m in 2022 and receiving reminders through Molineux boos ever since.

"Special" Cunha is Champions League-quality

In what has otherwise been a season to forget, Cunha has been Wolves’ brightest spark and one of the Premier League’s standout players. The Brazilian, simply put, is not a player who should be competing in a relegation scrap. What he is without any doubt is a forward capable of playing Champions League football and that would be recognised at Nottingham Forest.

As the current Wolves captain, however, it would be the most controversial move that he could make in the Premier League and it remains to be seen whether Cunha will want to tarnish his Molineux reputation to that extent this month.

Having scored 10 goals and assisted another four for Wolves so far this season, it’s no surprise that Cunha found himself at the centre of Vitor Pereira’s praise when the new manager arrived. The Wolves boss told reporters as relayed by the Premier League: “He is a special player. He can do things that can make the difference in small details.

“We try his corner because we want the swing inside to explore this. But you can work a lot and in the end nothing happens. With this kind of player this can happen. I think it is not about work, it is about quality, his individual quality.”

Enquiry made: Man Utd "really interested" in signing "fantastic" defender

Manchester United are “really interested” in signing a “fantastic” defender and enquiries have already been made, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Lots of work for Ruben Amorim to do

The 2-1 victory over Manchester City could have been a real turning point for United, but they have continued their dismal form since their victory at the Etihad Stadium, having lost their last three Premier League matches. Before taking the job, Ruben Amorim would’ve been well aware of the size of the task at hand, but what he’s seen from his players so far will nonetheless be of great concern.

Amorim is tasked with rebuilding the club, and with the transfer window beginning tomorrow he will get his first opportunity to make his own mark on the squad he inherited. The Portuguese tactician is tasked with bringing in players comfortable operating in his preferred three-at-the-back system, which he is unwilling to compromise on.

In such a formation, it is vital to have wing-backs capable of contributing not only defensively but also going forward, and Amorim may have now identified a left-wing back who fits the bill. Romano has dropped an update about the Red Devils’ potential transfer business in January and beyond on his YouTube channel, revealing that Milos Kerkez is set to be targeted.

Bournemouth'sMilosKerkezin action with Crystal Palace's Will Hughes

The transfer expert said: “One of the players they appreciate, I told you several times, for the left-wing back position, is Milos Kerkez. I keep saying that both Man United and Liverpool have been monitoring the player, but at the moment my information is that Liverpool always prefer to go for a different profile, different kind of player.

“At the moment, Man United have been more constant in terms of enquiring, trying to understand the situation of the player, so I see Man United as a club really interested in Milos Kerkez.”

Romano also went on to say that Kerkez has recently switched agents, which is normally a clear sign that a player is looking to move to a new club in the near future.

Kerkez impressing for Bournemouth

The Hungarian has looked impressive in an AFC Bournemouth shirt from the very start, drawing praise from the media for his performance on his debut in August last year.

Last season, the 21-year-old averaged 9.85 defensive actions per 90, the highest amount of any U23 left-back in the Premier League, displaying that he is very competent defensively.

Not only that, but he has been described as “really comfy going forward” by former Middlesbrough man Robbie Mustoe, indicating that he could be the perfect option for Amorim at left-wing back.

With Luke Shaw’s injury struggles, it is obvious that Amorim needs to bring in a new left-back either in January or the summer, and Kerkez could be an excellent addition to the squad.

James Sales' career-best puts Northants in box seat

Gloucestershire 317 and 135 for 5 (Harris 62) trail Northamptonshire 479 (Rickelton 95, Procter 78, Sales 71, Young 61, Gohar 5-134) by 27 runsJames Sales hit a career-best 71 to help Northamptonshire build a winning position on the third day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College.Unbeaten on 21 overnight, the 19-year-old shared a key ninth-wicket stand of 78 with Ben Sanderson as the visitors extended their first innings score from an overnight 353 for seven to 479 all out, a lead of 162.Left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar finished with 5 for 134. But his efforts looked to be in vain as Gloucestershire slipped to 135 for five in their second innings, still 27 behind, by the time bad light ended play 15 overs early.Despite a defiant 62 from Marcus Harris, the hosts were relieved when the action was curtailed, Tom Taylor having claimed two of the wickets on a wearing pitch.Trailing by 36 runs at the start of the day, Gloucestershire needed to back their bowlers with tight fielding to restrict the deficit to a manageable level.Instead, they dropped Sales twice when he had added only a single to his overnight score, David Payne the unlucky bowler on both occasions. First Harris spilled a chance two-handed to his right at gully. Then Ollie Price failed to capitalise on an edge to second slip.Despite Zafar’s four wickets on day two, Gloucestershire bowled seam for the first 11 overs, only introducing their specialist spinner after 30 runs had been added. Three runs later he made the breakthrough, Simon Kerrigan, on 14, driving a catch to extra cover.Sales moved to fifty with a pulled four off Zafar, having faced 121 balls and hit 6 fours. Sanderson then extended the lead to three figures before the pair took 12 off the only over of the innings bowled by Gloucestershire captain Graeme van Buuren.By lunch, Northants had reached 454 for eight, having added 101 in the morning session. Sales’ vital contribution ended when he was unlucky to edge a leg side delivery from Zak Chappell through to James Bracey, whose wicketkeeping throughout the innings was exemplary.A couple of sixes by last man Jack White off Zafar added to Gloucestershire’s frustration and Sanderson was only four short of his career best score when spooning a catch to cover off Chappell. The home side had progressed their second innings to 37 when Chris Dent departed for 16 in careless fashion, chipping a catch to short mid-wicket off Taylor.Ollie Price was caught behind off White for a seven-ball duck and at 42 for two, Gloucestershire trailed by 116.Harris went on the counter-attack, lofting Kerrigan for two sixes over wide long-on as he and Miles Hammond took the total to 82 for 2 by tea in poor light. With only a run added, Taylor beat Hammond’s defensive shot and trapped him lbw. Harris was beaten by successive balls from Sanderson, but then took a single off him to reach a 67-ball half-century, with two sixes and five fours.Gloucestershire’s hopes of saving the game were dealt a severe blow when Harris advanced down the pitch to Kerrigan and was bowled between bat and pad.James Bracey followed for 23, bowled by offspinner Rob Keogh’s first delivery of the innings, a full one which crept under the bat, and the hosts were in dire trouble at 132 for five.

Markram sees a role for himself in T20 World Cup

He is also “open to” moving down the order in Tests, if asked to by the team management

Firdose Moonda02-Aug-2022Aiden Markram won’t say it quite yet, but in spite of the bottleneck of top-order batters in South Africa’s T20I squad, he is fairly sure of his place to Australia for the World Cup. And you would think he should be.Markram is ranked third on the ICC’s T20I batting rankings, averages 42.60 in T20Is, strikes at 146.55 and contributes with part time offspin. But he has only played one of South Africa’s eight T20Is this year, missed the series against India after contracting Covid-19 and was benched for two of the three games against England in favour of Heinrich Klaasen. So if he was feeling uncertain, it would be understandable. Luckily for him, South Africa have a plan and it almost certainly includes him.”The communication has been really good from coach, management team and captain. It makes it easier to understand why they are doing it (rotating players). Building up to World Cups you want to pick your best squad and it’s important to give guys fair opportunities before you select the team,” Markram said ahead of South Africa’s two-match T20I series against Ireland, which starts on Wednesday in Bristol.Although South Africa don’t have many matches left to experiment before the T20 World Cup (their two against Ireland are followed by three in India just before the tournament), they have tinkered with the top order in the absence of captain Temba Bavuma. They started off the England series giving Klaasen an opportunity at No. 4, but even though he is capable of hitting the ball hard, Klaasen may have had his run with scores of 20 and 19 against England. Markram replaced Klaasen for the third game and hit an unbeaten 51 in the deciding match.Who bats above Markram is yet to be fully decided. Quinton de Kock will get in on reputation, if not current form, and Reeza Hendricks has done everything asked of him to open the batting with de Kock with three successive half-centuries against England. But if Bavuma is fit, that means either Hendricks is squeezed out or moved down the order, where Rilee Rossouw returned to the national set-up with an unbeaten 96 in the second match against England. If Rossouw moves down, that impedes on Markram and possibly further down where David Miller and Tristan Stubbs make up the middle order. It’s a problem of plenty, which South Africa may not yet know how to solve apart from Markram, who can see a clear role for himself in that mix.”Rilee, Tristan and Reeza are exciting for us as a team and creates some good competition for us as a squad. For me, it’s just about playing the situation. If they get us off to a flier, it’s about coming in and matching their intensity. And if not, it’s for me to up the intensity,” he said.”I would still love to be involved in all three formats and will put as much work as I can to try and keep that dream of playing in all three formats alive”•Getty ImagesEnergy in the middle order is where South Africa’s squad has seen its biggest change from the team they were a year or two ago. Rather than rely on one player to finish an innings – Miller historically – they now have Markram, Stubbs, Miller and Andile Phehlukwayo with Stubbs adding a new dynamic to the squad. “It’s exciting for us to have a player with his x-factor ability,” Markram said. “He (Stubbs) is on cloud nine now and it’s about staying there and enjoying every second. He is a bit of a free spirit and has always got a smile on his face.”The hype around Stubbs may remind some of the same hope Markram brought with him after South Africa won the 2014 Under-19 World Cup and he was promoted to senior international cricket three years later. Markram said he “hasn’t quite got it worked out,” how to manage those expectations but his advice to Stubbs is that since “it’s been an awesome six months for him, the longer he can drag that out, the more awesome things will come for him.”That’s how Markram has played since the IPL, where he had a “decent bit, not amazing” tournament for Sunrisers Hyderabad, with three fifties in his 13 innings. “Confidence is a massive part of this game. This IPL tournament provided me with that confidence, that belief that I was lacking [earlier],” Markram said. While Markram may be fairly sure of himself in T20Is, he can’t be quite as assured in other formats because “I can appreciate that I might have not scored as many runs as I should have.” Specifically, his role as a Test player will come into sharp focus later this month, when South Africa play England for three games, starting on August 17.Markram has been included in the squad, after missing the series against Bangladesh because of the IPL and following a particularly poor run. Before that, Markram had gone 13 Test innings with only one half-century and an average of 16.38. He has since been replaced by Sarel Erwee as Dean Elgar’s opening partner, and does not think he will find his way back into the XI anytime soon. “I am not even expecting to play to be honest,” he said. “If you look at the makeup of the top three, they’ve done really well over the past few series. I’m over the moon for the three of them.”Asked if he could consider moving down the order in the longest format, as he has done in shorter ones, Markram said, “it’s something I would be open to,” but that South Africa haven’t had any planning around that yet. “We haven’t had too many discussions with regards to red-ball cricket. That will be next week,” he said. “I’ve only ever done top of the order stuff but it’s something I would be open to. If there is a role to fill in the middle order and the coaches and selectors think there is a space for me, I would be open to trying it and I would have to prepare accordingly. And make those slight mental adjustments.”Wherever, or perhaps whether, he finds himself in the line-up, Markram remains committed across longer and shorter formats even as an increasing number of players find themselves choosing between them. “I would still love to be involved in all three formats and will put as much work as I can to try and keep that dream of playing in all three formats alive.”
