Ratcliffe set to cull 200 club employees in AprilMan Utd staff believe Ratcliff has planted a spyHas been frequently spotted with the top bosses Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

This latest development comes as INEOS continues to implement major restructuring plans. The latest round of job cuts will see around 200 employees made redundant, with affected staff expected to learn their fate in April. This follows a previous set of layoffs last year, where 250 positions were eliminated. According to reports from certain staff members have started to perceive a certain individual as an observer on behalf of Ratcliffe and his leadership team, prompting them to be more cautious about their discussions in his company.

The official in question has been identified as Josh Thompson, who has been described as INEOS’ “eyes and ears” within Manchester United as revealed by Thompson serves as a junior aide to Ratcliffe and effectively acts as the personal assistant to Sir Dave Brailsford, INEOS’ Director of Sport. He is the son of David Thompson, CEO of INEOS Olefins and Polymers Asia. Some within the club have reportedly accused him of benefiting from nepotism, labelling him a "nepo baby" due to his familial connections.

DID YOU KNOW?

Since joining INEOS Sport as a project manager in 2022, Thompson has been seen at several Manchester United matches, often appearing alongside high-ranking club officials, including Ratcliffe and Brailsford. He was also present during Ruben Amorim’s official introduction after the Portuguese coach was appointed in November. Nonetheless, while some members of the club have been sceptical about Thompson’s role, others have reportedly found him "nice guy" and "personable".

Brailsford had temporarily relocated from Monaco to be more involved in the club’s affairs, particularly overseeing the £50 million redevelopment of Carrington. His frequent presence at the training ground has reportedly unsettled some employees, especially as INEOS continues its restructuring efforts. With uncertainty lingering over job security and operational changes, staff morale remains fragile.

Chelsea academy star was meant to be Hazard 2.0, now he’s unemployed at 28

Chelsea have become known over the years for their Cobham Academy, which has produced a catalogue of elite-level talents who have either made a huge impact on the first team or made the club a huge profit.

Within Enzo Maresca’s current squad, their academy success can be seen in the form of defender Levi Colwill, who has enjoyed a huge rise in recent years.

The 21-year-old has spent various years out on loan, before becoming a crucial player under the Italian in 2024/25, missing just one minute of Premier League action so far this campaign.

As a result of his excellent progress, he’s become a regular in the England setup under Lee Carsley in recent months, being named in all three squads during the ongoing season.

There’s no denying that centre-back wouldn’t be at the current performance level if it wasn’t for his successful loan spells elsewhere, with his first leap in England’s top-flight coming in 2022/23.

Chelsea’s transfer window in the summer of 2022

Colwill left on a season-long loan to join Brighton and Hove Albion after his previous season on loan at Huddersfield Town the year prior, as they lost in the play-off final against Nottingham Forest.

Jake Clarke-Salter is another defender who had huge expectations on his shoulders after coming through the academy, but ultimately he never made the impact many expected him to as a youngster.

Crystal Palace linked Jake Clarke-Salter in action for QPR.

The now 27-year-old only featured twice for his boyhood club, before leaving on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, joining Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers at the end of his contract.

The aforementioned window allowed for the departures of two high-earning players who, unfortunately, were unable to match the expectations many placed on their shoulders upon their respective moves to Stamford Bridge.

Ross Barkley left after a three-and-a-half year stint in West London, with Danny Drinkwater spending five years at the Blues after joining in a £35m deal from Leicester City after their Premier League triumph back in 2015/16.

However, such a window also saw the departure of a talent who many expected to become a top-level star but was unable to make such an impact due to constant injury troubles.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

The former Chelsea star who’s now unemployed at 28

Belgian winger Charly Musonda joined Chelsea as a 15-year-old back in the summer of 2012, the same window as compatriot Eden Hazard, but the pair couldn’t have developed further apart after their respective spells at the Bridge.

The former Lille ace spent seven years in the capital, racking up over 350 appearances and scoring over 100 goals before leaving to join Real Madrid for £130m in the summer of 2019.

However, the same can’t be said for Musonda, who was once seen as a generational talent given his time in the academy but was unfortunately unable to replicate such a feat in the first team.

Sadly, the attacker would only feature seven times, scoring just a solitary goal against Nottingham Forest back in the Carabao Cup back in September 2017.

Injuries played a huge part in his lack of game time, being sent on various stints to Vitesse and Celtic before eventually being released by the Blues in the summer of 2022 as a 25-year-old.

Musonda has since had short stints at Spanish side Levante, whilst also featuring for Cypriot outfit Anorthosis during the 2023/24 campaign, before subsequently being released back in September.

To this day, the now 28-year-old remains a free agent, with his career in Europe all but over given his decline over the past couple of years – such a sad sight to see given his promise as a youngster.

He’s just another case of a youngster who’s been unable to match his potential during his academy days, with the pressure placed on his shoulders as a teenager undoubtedly playing a huge part in his lack of development.

Mark Ramprakash has batting consultancy with Middlesex extended

Former England batting coach will continue to work with Middlesex through 2022 summer

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Feb-2022Mark Ramprakash will work alongside Middlesex’s batters this summer after the club extended his consultancy.Ramprakash, who began his playing career at Middlesex before moving south of the river to Surrey, was England’s batting coach between 2014 and 2019. He subsequently took up a role a director of cricket at Harrow, which he has combined with media work, before being brought in by Middlesex over the winter.”Since Ramps joined us at the start of our winter training programme, the impact he’s had has been incredible,” Middlesex’s head of men’s performance cricket, Alan Coleman, said. “He has brought an energy to our sessions that not only engages the players but constantly challenges them to improve.Related

Ramprakash shortlisted for Warwickshire head coach vacancy

Yorkshire add Kabir, Smith and Maiden to coaching staff

“I share Ramps’ view that you don’t want to waste a single session and that getting in the nets isn’t simply about hitting balls. He raises the intensity, puts the players under pressure in scenario-based sessions, where every ball counts and every shot matters.”He has engaged the group, who are showing plenty of signs of responding well to his methods, and in Ramps we have a coach that completely gets what we’re trying to achieve as a playing group and coaching team and cares deeply about the club.”I’m thrilled that he has committed himself to the group for the rest of this season, and I can’t wait to see what we can collectively achieve with him as an important part of the coaching unit.”Ramprakash scored more than 35,000 first-class runs in his career, including 114 centuries, although he was viewed as an unfulfilled talent after averaging 27.32 across 52 Tests for England. He spent a period as Middlesex’s batting coach after retiring from playing in 2012, and returns with the club seeking to improve fortunes after a difficult 2021 that saw Angus Fraser, the long-serving director of cricket, moved sideways into a new role and Stuart Law sacked as head coach. Coleman now heads a new coaching structure, with Richard Johnson – a former Middlesex team-mate of Ramprakash – appointed as first-team coach last month. In particular, Ramprakash will look to raise batting standards among a top order that has struggled to regularly post big scores in Championship cricket, with Middlesex losing eight out of 14 red-ball fixtures last season.

Liverpool chiefs send scouts after deadly £45,000-a-week versatile forward

Liverpool are believed to have sent scouts to watch two impressive Premier League players, with one of them set to be available for £50m in 2025.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds didn’t sign a new midfielder in the summer transfer window, failing to snap up Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, and Aurelien Tchouameni has been linked with a move to Anfield in January.

The Real Madrid ace could head to Liverpool midway through the season, as FSG potentially provide Arne Slot with the funds that he no doubt craved before the new season got underway, with Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa the only signings made.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain right-back Achraf Hakimi has been touted as a possible successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold, should the Reds’ vice-captain decide not to sign a new deal at his boyhood club. Madrid continue to be linked with a move for the Anfield star.

Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez has also been mentioned as a possible option for Liverpool, having made his first start of the season away to Real Madrid recently, helping his side seal a memorable 4-0 win against their biggest rivals. Now, another intriguing transfer rumour has emerged.

Liverpool send scouts to watch Premier League star

According to a new update from Sky Sports, Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo is “among the players” being scouted by Liverpool currently, along with Bournemouth ace Antoine Semenyo and others.

It is claimed that Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are “working hard on assessing future talent, especially in areas of the team that may need replacements within the next 12 months”, amid doubts over the futures of legendary trio Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

Mbeumo, who is said to be up for sale if teams meet a £50m price tag next year, represents a great option to come in for Salah, whose future remains unknown, having posted a cryptic message on X over the weekend, following his match-winning exploits at home to Brighton.

The £45,000-a-week Brentford hero is enjoying a great season to date, scoring eight goals in the Premier League and proving to be one of the most deadly attacking players in the division, leading to Thomas Frank heaping praise on him: “He’s added another layer this year. I’m convinced one day he’ll play for a bigger club. I’d definitely buy him if I were at a bigger club.”

The comparisons between Mbeumo and Salah are obvious, in terms of their direct nature out wide and their ability to cut inside onto their dangerous left foot, and the fact that the former is seven years younger than the latter makes him an ideal potential successor.

Liverpool already have their own Mbeumo in "unstoppable" star

Liverpool might not need to go after Bryan Mbeumo after all.

ByKelan Sarson Nov 4, 2024

Ideally, Mbeumo won’t be needed too soon, with Salah hopefully signing a contract extension before next summer, but he should be considered a strong long-term option to replace him in Liverpool’s attack.

Americans Abroad: USMNT star Christian Pulisic scores brace to save Milan, while Sergino Dest makes long-awaited PSV return

GOAL reviews the major takeaways from Americans playing in Europe, headlined by goals from Pulisic and Josh Sargent

When AC Milan needed a hero, Christian Pulisic stepped up, as he so often does. It had been too long since Pulisic provided one of those superstar performances, but this one surely came at the right time for both Milan and the U.S. men's national team, who will know they can count on their superstar with the CONCACAF Nations League looming.

Pulisic was the main story for the USMNT this weekend, but was far from the only one – it was an eventful one for Americans Abroad. Big goals, injury returns, clean sheets and rough handball calls – there was plenty going on when it came to the USMNT's big stars.

Josh Sargent was back scoring, continuing his own hot streak. Chris Richards is one of the few players in the player pool who can match him for form, and he kept that going with a clean-sheet win with Crystal Palace. Richards has emerged as a true Premier League regular while Sargent hopes to get there by leading Norwich to promotion this season – although those hopes took a hit this weekend.

Elsewhere, Sergino Dest made his long-awaited return from his ACL injury, while Caleb Wiley made his less-long-awaited return to debut for Watford. Neither will be in the USMNT squad this month, but there were plenty of good moments from those that will be. With the CONCACAF Nations League matches happening in less than two weeks, everything is falling into place before Mauricio Pochettino announces his squad on Tuesday.

GOAL looks at the major takeaways from this weekend's Americans Abroad.

GettyPulisic does it again for Milan

It looked as if it was going to be another embarrassing day for Milan. Form has fallen off a cliff, leading to rumors that new coach Sergio Coinceicao could be gone as soon as this summer. Massimiliano Allegri has already reportedly been named as a potential successor. That's how far gone things had gotten.

Pulisic might not be able to single-handedly save Conceicao, but he sure as hell did save Milan on Saturday.

After seeing his side go 2-0 down to lowly Lecce, Pulisic won a penalty and converted it, leveling the match with Milan's second goal in five minutes. Eight minutes after that, he was on the scoresheet again, scoring first-time to give Milan a 3-1 lead that they would inevitably hold. In a matter of 13 minutes, Milan scored three times to earn three points, with Pulisic doing the heavy lifting.

It's what he's done all season long, at least when healthy. He leads Milan in goal contributions and many have come in the biggest moments. Champions League games, the Supercoppa Italiana win, come-from-behind Serie A wins – Pulisic isn't stat padding – he's making a difference.

The Nations League is on the horizon and, while he may not be in the form he was to start 2025, Pulisic is now back scoring goals, which is good news for the USMNT.

AdvertisementAFPDest makes his return

For the first time in 329 days, Dest was named to PSV's matchday squad. He took it a step further, too. By taking the field as a second-half substitute, USMNT defender is officially back.

Nearly a year after tearing his ACL, Dest made his long-awaited return to the field in PSV's 2-1 win over Heerenveen on Saturday. Very fittingly, he replaced Richy Ledezma, a longtime teammate who held down PSV's right-back spot so capably in Dest's absence.

In his 23 minutes, Dest completed all nine of his passes, dribbled past two defenders and had four passes into the final third. This was vintage Dest, even if he still has aways to go before he's truly back to his best.

It's why he was left off the USMNT's Nations League roster. Dest needs reps and minutes, although PSV are up against it in the league at the moment, they'll almost certainly give it to him. Ledezma has proven a more than capable understudy, which means Dest can be given the slower road back.

"I am immensely happy to be back," he told the club's official website. "The supporters and the players took good care of me and I'm very grateful for that. I've had that feeling for eleven months.

"Before the game, all I thought was, I want to get in and play again. Fortunately, the coach gave me a half-hour which was super nice. I also went straight into the duels and was just driven to seek them out. Of course, I have to take it easy and be careful, but it felt good."

Dest had to re-learn how to run – literally.

"The months were tough, but I had to accept it and keep going with a positive mindset," he said. "I had to learn to run again, train a lot and keep connecting with the team. The time was not easy and it took a long time, but I had a lot of support from the staff, players and supporters. Now I can show myself again."

Getty Images SportSargent goal not enough

If you blinked, you might have missed it. Sargent's goal came just a few minutes into Friday's match, before many could even get their live stream of the game going. If you missed it, though, no worries – it's nothing you haven't seen countless times in recent weeks.

You can make it eight in eight for Sargent, who netted just moments into Norwich's 1-1 draw with Oxford United. The good run of form continues and it's happening at the right moment for Sargent, who is going to get a very real chance with the USMNT in the Nations League. There's no one in his way this time. Sargent is the guy.

As for Norwich, though, it's looking a bit dire. With the two dropped points against an Oxford team below them in the table, Norwich sit 10th, six points out of a playoff spot. The race for that spot is tightening and every loss or draw is a missed chance. Sargent's future could very well depend on how that race ends up, and it's clear that the Canaries will need more than a few Sargent goals to make this final push.

Getty Images SportRichards blossoming as a defender

Some numbers: In Saturday's 1-0 win over Ipswich Town, Crystal Palace and USMNT defender Chris Richards completed more passes than anyone on the field. He had more tackles, five, than anyone else, too. Duels? He won more than anyone else with 10. You can add in five clearances and a pair of blocks, too. Those stats paint a clear picture: Richards did just about everything right in the shutout win.

It's become a theme with Richards, who has clearly taken a leap forward this season. Dating back to the start of February, Palace have now won six of seven in all competitions, with Richards being a key in just about every one of those wins. Manchester United, Aston Villa, Fulham – all have fallen to Palace. All have been stifled by Richards and the Palace defense.

For several years, the 24-year-old centerback has been hailed as a future USMNT defensive star. We've seen him take small steps forward, but there was always an expectation that a bigger one would happen someday. Someday is clearly now, as Richards is becoming one hell of a defender right before our eyes.
