San Jose are in talks to sign USMNT striker Brandon Vazquez from Liga MX side Monterrey, according to Tom Bogert. Only preliminary discussions have been held, as the Liga MX side are unwilling to part with their striker before the end of the season. A fee of around $8.5 million would reportedly be required to get the deal done, and other MLS clubs are interested in securing his signature.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Vazquez has extensive MLS experience. The USMNT forward started his career at Atlanta United, before moving to FC Cincinnati in 2020. He scored 32 goals for the MLS club, and made the MLS All Star team in 2022. He was among Mauricio Pochettino's first two USMNT squads, and has totaled 11 appearances for his country.

San Jose are looking to retool this winter after bringing in former USMNT manager Bruce Arena in a dual general manager-head coach role. Any deal would require a designated player spot, which the Earthquakes currently do not have available.

WHAT NEXT FOR VAZQUEZ AND SAN JOSE?

Vazquez is in the midst of Liga MX playoffs, and will likely be in the mix Saturday as his side look to overturn a 2-1 aggregate deficit to Atletico San Luis in the semifinal. Discussions for Vazquez are expected to continue, with MLS preseason to begin in the new year.

David Warner: 'Harsh call by selectors' to drop Manish Pandey

It remains unclear as of now who the “selectors” Warner was referring to are

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Apr-2021Dropping Manish Pandey from the Sunrisers Hyderabad XI was a “harsh call”, according to captain David Warner. It was a decision made by the team’s “selectors”, Warner said following their Super Over loss to the Delhi Capitals in Chennai on Sunday night.”It was a harsh call in my opinion. But at the end of the day, it is a decision of the selectors to do that,” Warner said at the post-match presentation when asked about Pandey’s absence.Pandey’s replacement, 23-year-old Virat Singh, managed 4 off 14 balls on a sticky Chepauk surface, where he was not the only batter to struggle in a chase of 160. “You can’t discredit Virat. He’s a very good player and on this surface, not getting too much time out there, it’s very difficult,” Warner said. “They [the Capitals bowlers] bowled fantastic through the middle and made it challenging for us.”It remains unclear as of now who the “selectors” Warner was referring to are. Among the big names on the Sunrisers’ support staff are director of cricket Tom Moody, head coach Trevor Bayliss, assistant coach Brad Haddin, batting mentor VVS Laxman and bowling mentor Muttiah Muralitharan, who had left the IPL bubble earlier in the tournament to get treatment for a blocked artery.Pandey has played three games so far this season, all in Chennai where scoring has been far from free-flowing, beginning with 61 not out off 44 against the Kolkata Knight Riders. In the next two games, he could not find momentum, his strike rate plunging below 100 in knocks of 38 off 39 and 2 off seven. In all, he has played 46 games for the Sunrisers since he joined them in 2018, scoring 1154 runs at 33.94 and a strike rate of 123.81. Last season, in the UAE, he was the team’s second-highest scorer, behind Warner, with 425 runs at 32.69 and a strike rate of 127.62.The Sunrisers now sit in seventh place on the points table, having lost four out of five games. Their next game is against current table-toppers Chennai Super Kings on April 28, in Delhi.

Club make contact to sign Rangers 21 y/o who Philippe Clement doesn’t want

An English club have enquired about the loan availability of a Rangers player who can "unlock defences" with his quality, according to a new Ibrox exit claim.

Rangers could lose Leon King

The Gers only have a few days left to complete any important summer transfer business, whether that be players coming in or current heroes leaving Ibrox, both permanently or temporarily.

A key update has dropped regarding the future of youngster Leon King, with Salford City believed to be keen on signing him on loan this season and have made an enquiry. The 20-year-old is in need of more regular playing time and the League Two club could be able to afford him that. His potential is still great, with Jurgen Klopp even praising him after a Champions League meeting against Liverpool in the past.

Rangers defender Leon King.

Away from the King news, there have been reports linking Rangers with new signings before the month is up, with Fiorentina wide man Josip Brekalo still a rumoured target for the Scottish Premiership giants.

Philippe Clement could also feel that another attacker is needed, in order for the Gers to have enough firepower to go all the way in the title race this season, and reports surrounding a move for Norwich City forward Abu Kamara are still refusing to go away.

English club enquire about Rangers 21 y/o

According to a new update from Football Insider, League Two side Carlisle United have enquired about Rangers youngster Alex Lowry, who has been told he is free to leave and isn't part of Clement's plans.

They are "keen to take the 21-year-old south of the border" before the window slams shut later this week, seeing him as a good addition to their squad for the 2024/25 season.

Rangers midfielder Alex Lowry.

As is the case with King, a loan move away for Lowry could be the best possible outcome this summer, allowing him to mature away from Ibrox, gaining some invaluable experience in a different league as he has not been a part of Clement's squad and has been playing with the B team.

Last season, the 21-year-old enjoyed a temporary spell at Hearts, making 12 appearances in the Scottish Premiership and starting 10 of those matches, with his performances leading to assistant manager Frankie McAvoy saying of him:

"He had a lot of options on the table and he chose to come here which is credit to him. He had the chance to go down south but he felt like we play in the right manner. He felt as though he could add something in terms of us playing. You could see that. We used him in a few positions. In the 10 position and in the pockets where he can bring that creativity to try and unlock defences."

With Clement unlikely to use Lowry this season, given his age and general lack of experience, it makes far more sense for him to continue his development away from Ibrox for another season, before returning next year and possibly looking to become more of a fixture in the setup.

MLS released its attendance data Thursday, revealing successful matchday numbers over the course of the 2024 season. The league's 12.1 million attendees is bettered by only the English Premier League, among all global leagues, and is more than 1 million more than the Spanish top flight.

Individual game numbers were impressive, too. Two matches had more than 70,000 fans, eight surpassed the 60,000 mark, and 31 featured in excess of 40,000.

The data places MLS in a competitive spot among soccer leagues worldwide. The advantage over the Bundesliga – just more than 40,000 – is the slimmest, but the league bettered Serie A, La Liga and Ligue 1 by some distance. MLS nearly doubled Liga MX's mark of 6,972,261.

Fan attendance hasn't been the only encouraging number of the United States' flagship soccer league this season. MLS also shot up Opta's relative league strength index, and is now the 9th most competitive division in the world – up from 31st just two years ago.

Tottenham now offered club’s £25 million Player of the Year with Solanke

Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the chance to sign one club's 2024 Player of the Year, amid their advanced talks over a deal for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Tottenham now in advanced talks to sign Solanke from Bournemouth

This morning, a flurry of reports from reliable media sources shared news that Spurs are now in advanced talks to sign Solanke, with manager Ange Postecoglou now closing in on his desired striker signing.

Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham are eyeing £12 million ace alongside Solanke

The Lilywhites are looking to shore up more key positions.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 8, 2024

Alasdair Gold of football.london claims the 26-year-old, who scored 21 goals in all competitions for Bournemouth last season, has shown a "big desire" to play for the club and this will be a real plus-point for Postecoglou.

David Ornstein, meanwhile, echoes Gold's claim by stating that Solanke is "desperate" to finalise a move to north London, with talks ongoing as Bournemouth agree to sell their talisman for a club-record fee.

Solanke's contract contains a £65 million release clause which is only valid for the Premier League top six, and according to GiveMeSport reporter Ben Jacobs, the Cherries are determined to hold for a fee as close to that figure as possible.

If talks fall through for the Englishman, it is believed Brentford striker Ivan Toney is seen as a concrete alternative Spurs option to Solanke.

"Tottenham now in advanced talks with Bournemouth over a club-record move for Dominic Solanke," wrote Jacobs on X.

"Solanke has a £65m release clause in his contract and Bournemouth determined to hold out for as close to that figure as possible. Spurs hopeful of coming to an agreement with negotiations ongoing. As @talkSPORT reported on Thursday, Tottenham also have a concrete interest in Brentford's Ivan Toney should a deal for Solanke not be finalised."

With Solanke very keen on the move, it will be totally down to the clubs to find middle ground in negotiations. Meanwhile, reliable Tottenham insider Paul O'Keefe has claimed that the Lilywhites have been approached about signing another player amid these talks.

Tottenham offered Celtic's 2024 Player of the Year Matt O'Riley

Celtic star Matt O'Riley, who scored 18 goals and registered 13 assists in 37 SPFL starts for the eventual Scottish champions last season, also bagged their 2024 Player of the Year award.

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

The Hoops value him at around £25 million, according to reports, and it is believed his camp are trying to get him a move down south. O'Keefe writes this week that Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign O'Riley from Celtic by intermediaries, but as things stand, they're unlikely to take the bait.

Called "top-class" and a joy to watch by Rangers legend Kris Boyd, the Denmark international is attracting serious interest from Brighton, who have apparently opened talks (Daily Mail), so there could be an alternative Premier League landing spot for O'Riley.

Liverpool expected to submit first offer for "complete" ace Slot knows well

With their first pre-season under Arne Slot well underway, Liverpool could finally seal their first arrival of the summer transfer window – with an offer reportedly expected in the coming days.

Liverpool transfer news

A new manager, a new sporting director in Richard Hughes and the return of Michael Edwards, combined with international tournaments this summer, was always going to delay the Reds in their transfer business. However, now in August, some may have expected those at Anfield to have had at least one deal over the line. Alas, that hasn't been the case, and it seems as though they won't be rushed into securing incomings that aren't deemed suitable enough.

The lack of fresh faces hasn't stopped Slot's first pre-season from going to plan, either. The Dutchman has overseen friendly victories over Real Betis and Premier League rivals Arsenal, during which Liverpool fans got a potential glimpse of what he's asking his new side to do.

That's not to say that fresh faces won't be on their way, with fresh reports suggesting the exact opposite. According to Sportmediaset via TuttoJuve, Liverpool are expected to submit an offer for Teun Koopmeiners in the coming days in a deal that would see them sign a midfielder who previously worked under Slot at AZ Alkmaar.

Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

Previous reports indicated that Atalanta have set a hefty price tag of £50m for the Dutchman, which would undoubtedly kickstart the Reds' transfer window just before the Premier League campaign gets underway. Following rumours that Wataru Endo has been attracting the interest of Marseille, who even saw a bid rejected, those at Anfield may well be in need of a midfield addition this summer. And Koopmeiners would certainly be an impressive coup.

"Complete" Koopmeiners can replace Endo

Although Koopmeiners' main position is attacking midfield, his ability to play in both central and defensive midfield means that he could emerge to replace Endo in the long term. The former Stuttgart man even admitted that he is not a long-term solution at the heart of Liverpool's midfield at 31 years old, saying (via This is Anfield): "I don’t care about those reports, but I also think it would be better to get a No. 6 midfielder."

The numbers instantly highlight Koopmeiners' versatility, managing to match Endo defensively whilst also adding an attacking element that the current Liverpool midfielder lacks.

Described as "complete" by analyst Ben Mattinson, the Atalanta man could be the final piece of the Reds' midfield rebuild and the key to the perfect debut season for Slot at Anfield. Having worked with the Dutchman before, it would feel somewhat fitting that Koopmeiners emerges to finally kickstart Liverpool's summer less than two weeks until the Premier League campaign gets underway.

All eyes will be on Slot's first Premier League game against Ipswich Town, which may yet feature a fresh face in the form of Koopmeiners.

Man City stepping up move for £60m "wizard" who’s just like Musiala

Manchester City had a strong English representation at Euro 2024. They initially had four players named in the provisional squad, but that was trimmed down to three when it was announced that Jack Grealish did not make the final cut for the Three Lions. It is also worth pointing out that Cole Palmer, who made the squad, is a City academy graduate.

The three Cityzens who made the full squad were John Stones, Kyle Walker and Phil Foden. The trio all played a vital part as England reached the final of the tournament, where they were defeated by Spain, as club colleague Rodri lifted the trophy.

As per FBref, City’s trio of players in Germany were three of seven Englishmen who played in all seven of the Three Lions’ games, with Stones being the only ever-present of the three. None of them registered a goal involvement, which, from Foden’s perspective, was rather surprising given his exemplary form in 2023/24, where he scored 19 goals and registered eight assists in 35 Premier League games.

Crystal Palace were actually the side with the highest number of players in England’s Euro 2024 squad after Gareth Southgate selected six in total. However, the Cityzens have been linked with one of those players and could make a move to sign him before the transfer deadline.

Man City target Premier League attacker

The player in question here is Palace’s England international attacker Eberechi Eze. The 26-year-old versatile attacker has been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park all summer, after impressing at Euro 2024 and during the 2023/24 season.

According to a report from Football Transfers, City view the former QPR man as ‘a concrete target’ this summer, with the article stating Pep Guardiola and his side are ‘enthusiastic about the prospect’ of potentially doing a deal this summer.

Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace

However, they are not alone in their interest of the talented attacker. According to a recent report from The Times, North London side Tottenham Hotspur ‘like Eze’, and could look to beat the Cityzens to his signature and do a deal for the Palace number 10 this summer.

Eze’s price, however, complicates matters for both City and Spurs. The Eagles’ star man has a £60m release clause in his deal, with the South London side seemingly unwilling to negotiate any cheaper than that. Football Transfers confirmed that there are ‘some concerns’ about the price tag, but City will still look to sign Eze.

Why Eze would be a good signing

The 26-year-old was superb under Oliver Glasner last season. Eze played 27 games in the Premier League, scoring 11 goals and grabbing four assists, as well as getting two assists in the Carabao Cup.

Under Palace’s Austrian manager, the England international featured in 11 games and got himself on the score sheet six times, as well as registering four assists. That included two goals and one assist in the 5-0 thrashing of Aston Villa on the final day of the season.

Should City sign Eze this summer, he could prove to be an excellent alternative to Jamal Musiala – the man whom FBref marks as his most comparable player in Europe's top five leagues.

Guardiola’s side were linked with the Bayern Munich star towards the end of last season, but they do not seem likely to pursue a deal for the former Chelsea academy player.

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala.

However, Eze could certainly prove to be a perfect alternative to the German attacker. Like Musiala, who glides with the ball at his feet, the Eagles' number ten is a silky dribbler, who rides challenges so well and has lightning-quick feet. England teammate Declan Rice called him a “wizard”, and it is easy to see why when watching him in full flow.

Indeed, their similarities when dribbling are also reflected when comparing the pair’s FBref numbers. The Eagles attacker completes an average of 3.03 take-ons per 90 minutes, with Musiala slightly more at 4.46. Eze, however, completes more carries into the opposition’s penalty box per game, with 1.89 compared to the German’s 1.69.

City would also not lose out on creativity if they sign Eze as an alternative to Musiala. The Palace attacker averages more key passes than the Bayern Munich man per game, with 2.37 compared to 2.15 for Musiala.

Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze

Whilst £60m is a lot of money, the Cityzens have it at their disposal after selling Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid earlier this week. If they are looking for a carry-first profile who can add creativity and dynamism to shake up their attack, Eze could be the dream signing for City now they seem unable to get Musiala.

Timo Werner extended his loan deal with the Lilywhites to run through to the end of this Premier League season, with the new temporary agreement including a cheaper buy-option set at around £7.5 million.

After agreeing to keep the German, Spurs moved to sign 18-year-old Archie Gray from Leeds United for around £40 million, strengthening Postecoglou's midfield options with the arrival of an English sensation who starred at Elland Road in the Championship last season.

Their biggest marquee deal, a £65 million (including add-ons) move for striker Dominic Solanke, also provided Postecoglou with a proven Premier League goalscorer to lead the line this campaign – and he's expected to be a highly crucial player for them throughout 2024/2025.

Spurs ended their productive window with the swift and largely silent transfer of Wilson Odobert from Burnley, summing up their transfer business and not counting moves for youngsters Lucas Bergvall and South Korean wonderkid Min-hyeok Yang.

Levy and Lange also offloaded a host of players in that time, including a deadline day exit for midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, who completed a permanent switch back to former club Real Betis in La Liga.

Manu Fajardo names Tottenham as 2025 move for Johnny Cardoso

A condition of the agreement was first refusal on a potential future swoop for Betis star Johnny Cardoso. Spurs reportedly have opening rights to sign the 22-year-old USA international for around £25 million, which could be a possibility considering his impressive performances in the Spanish top flight lately.

Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso

Betis sporting director Manu Fajardo has publicly confirmed Tottenham's involvement in a potential future move for Cardoso, hinting that a summer move to N17 in 2025 is a possibility for the player.

"He has played an important role in terms of his rights for the future," said Fajardo in a Q&A with Marca this week. "Leaving next summer? It would depend on Tottenham and other offers that come in."

Last season, Cardoso averaged a match rating per 90 of 7.06 according to WhoScored, with the midfielder also bagging two assists and a goal in 17 league outings over 2023/2024.
