Pakistan captain suffered a broken thumb at training on Sunday

Babar Azam, as always, added a touch of class while he was there•PCB
Pakistan captain Babar Azam has fractured his right thumb in training on Sunday and has subsequently been ruled out of action for 12 days. That means he will not be available to play the three T20Is that kick off the team’s tour of New Zealand starting December 18.A PCB press release said Azam picked up the injury while facing throwdowns. He was then taken to a hospital in Queenstown where X-rays revealed the extent of the damage, prompting a period of rest and rehabilitation.”During this period, the doctors will continue to monitor Babar’s injury before confirming his participation in the first Test, which starts at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, on 26 December,” the PCB release said.Pakistan’s T20I squad to face New Zealand
Shadab Khan (captain), Abdullah Shafique, Faheem Ashraf, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Hussain Talat, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Rizwan, Musa Khan, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Qadir and Wahab Riaz. Babar Azam (withdrawn due to injury)
The loss of Azam might prove to be a significant blow to Pakistan. Not only is he their captain, he is also the No. 2-ranked batsman in T20Is and had come into the tour with several good scores behind him. Only a month ago he led his PSL team, the Karachi Kings, to their first title with half-centuries in both qualifier one and the final. He was Man-of-the-Match both times and, prior to that, had walloped Zimbabwe for a couple of half-centuries to bolster a T20 average of 57.53 and a strike-rate of 139 since August 2020.”Injuries are part and parcel of professional sport and while it is hugely disappointing to lose a player of Babar Azam’s calibre for the T20Is, this opens up opportunities for the other highly talented and exciting players to step-up,” Pakistan coach Misbah-ul-Haq said. However, since Azam plays at the top of the order, they may prefer to use Mohammad Hafeez in that position and look for a new lower order hitter to round out the XI.Pakistan have other injury concerns as well, including one to their potential stand-in captain. The groin niggle that ruled Shadab Khan out of the home series against Zimbabwe in November has not fully healed yet and a decision on his playing the first T20I in Auckland on Friday will be taken closer to game time.”We remain optimistic that he will be available for the T20Is,” Misbah said about his legspinning lynch pin, “but we will neither risk him nor the team’s chances if we think he needs a few more days to be back to his complete fitness.”Among the Test players, Imam-ul-Haq is also nursing a broken finger suffered in training on Saturday and has been advised 12 days’ rest. As a result, he has been withdrawn from the Shaheens’ four-day game against New Zealand A starting December 17.
The BCCI’s cricket advisory committee – led by former India fast bowlers Madan Lal and RP Singh and the former women’s cricketer Sulakshana Naik – has initiated the process on Thursday to appoint three new selectors for the men’s selection panel. Among those who have been shortlisted for the position comprise former India players Ajit Agarkar, Chetan Sharma, Maninder Singh, Nayan Mongia and SS Das.According to the , others that have been shortlisted include Abey Kuruvilla, Vijay Dahiya, Ajay Ratra, Nikhil Chopra, Debashish Mohanty and Ranadeb Bose. The shortlisted candidates, who had applied late November, were informed on Wednesday evening that the interviews would be conducted virtually. it is understood the CAC will finalise its choices by end of the day and share with the BCCI. Once the refurbished selection committee is decided, the group’s first task would be to pick squads for the home series against England which comprises four Tests, 5 T20s and three ODIs, starting February 5 next year. The BCCI had invited applications to fill the three vacant spots left after the tenures of Jatin Paranjape, Devang Gandhi and Sarandeep Singh ended in September. The men’s selection committee currently consists of only two members: former India spinner Sunil Joshi, who is the chairman, and Harvinder Singh, the former India and Railways fast bowler. Those two were appointed after the terms of MSK Prasad and Gagan Khoda ended in February after India’s tour of New Zealand. The BCCI had put down a minimum qualification of seven Tests or 30 first-class matches or 10 ODIs and 20 first-class matches for the applicants. They should have also retired “at least five years previously”. The board also listed 60 as the age limit for the applicants.

Aston Villa look intent on strengthening their squad ahead of the 2024/25 season, which will see the Midlands outfit play in the Champions League.
Unai Emery certainly hasn’t rested on his laurels, already signing Lewis Dobbin from Everton, while Ian Maatsen has seemingly sealed a move from Chelsea.

The pair won't be the only arrivals in the Midlands this summer, as Emery eyes a swoop for a former Premier League player…
Aston Villa look set to raid Sporting Club
According to a report from Portuguese outlet O Jogo (via Sport Witness) earlier this month, Villa have been linked with a move for Pedro Goncalves recently as they seek to bolster their attacking options.
Bayer Leverkusen have had an offer of £25m rejected as the Portuguese club demand a much higher transfer fee, something which could potentially be a stumbling block for Emery.
Sporting Lisbon's Pedro Goncalves.
Might Goncalves want a second crack at the Premier League, however, as he made just one appearance during a spell with Wolves at the start of his career.

A move for the 26-year-old would allow Emery to sign a perfect player for Maatsen to link up with, as well as bringing in an upgrade on Morgan Rogers.
What Pedro Goncalves could offer Aston Villa
Signing Maatsen could be a shrewd piece of business, but by adding Goncalves to his squad, the Spaniard could form an impressive duo on the left wing.
Pedro Goncalves of Sporting CP
Last season, the former Wolves starlet scored 18 goals while grabbing 17 assists across all competitions. 18 of these goal contributions came from the left wing, which suggests this is the position he is most comfortable performing in.
During his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, Maatsen created three big chances, averaged 0.5 key passes and succeeded with 0.8 dribbles across just 16 Bundesliga matches, proving that he loves to get forward whenever possible, something which could work in Goncalves’ favour.
Emery signed Rogers in January from Middlesbrough after he enjoyed an impressive start to the season, but he failed to really replicate this sort of form in the Midlands.
Indeed, when compared to his positional peers across similar leagues, the youngster ranked in the top 8% for assists per 90 (0.42) yet ranked in the lowest 88% for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.11) and the lowest 60% for total shots per 90 (1.97).
In comparison, Goncalves ranked in the top 12% for non-penalty goals (0.38), the top 3% for assists (0.42) and the top 9% for total shots (3.15) per 90, which certainly proves he would be a major upgrade on the current Villa gem.
Aston Villa could sign "the new Bruno Fernandes" in £25m swoop

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig hailed Goncalves as “incredible” way back in 2021 and since then, he has improved both his performances and statistics season after season.
The chance to play in the Premier League and compete at the top end of the table, plus participation in the Champions League, could give Emery an advantage in his pursuit of the winger.
Much will depend on the fee Sporting Club demand for their prized asset in the coming weeks.
Joe Root hopes that the know-how gleaned by his twin spinners, Jack Leach and Dom Bess, on conducive surfaces at Taunton will help England to overcome their lack of match preparation when the first Test against Sri Lanka gets underway in Galle on Thursday. With England’s match practice limited to two days of intra-squad warm-ups in Hambantota, and with their most experienced spinner, Moeen Ali, ruled out of the series after testing positive for Covid-19 on arrival, Root is relying on his players to lean on prior experience to overcome their unavoidable rustiness.”I think we’ve prepared the best we can,” Root said during the captain’s pre-match press conference on Wednesday. “That’s all you can do. We’ve obviously had a very short lead-in to this game but we have made the most of everything we’ve got.”I can’t ask any more of the guys, we’ve had some really good conversations about the conditions and what to expect and we’ve had guys with really good experiences here on the previous tour and some very exciting young players. When you put all that together it blends nicely and hopefully we can transfer that into the game tomorrow.”Jack Leach poses in front of a mural in Sri Lanka•Getty Images
Leach is one of those guys with Sri Lankan know-how, having played a significant role on England’s last completed tour in 2018-19 – he was the joint-leading wicket-taker alongside Moeen with 18 scalps in their 3-0 series win. However, Bess is the current incumbent in the Test team, having featured in all six home Tests against West Indies and Pakistan last summer, even though he has not yet played a Test in Asian conditions, with his only two overseas Tests coming against South Africa at Cape Town and Port Elizabeth last January.Nor have Leach and Bess yet played a Test alongside one another, despite having formed a potent alliance at Somerset for three seasons from 2016, with their success on Taunton’s habitually turning surfaces proving a major factor in their club’s bid for an elusive maiden County Championship title.Dom Bess bowls in training•Getty Images
However, Bess moved on to Yorkshire last season in search of more regular first-team opportunities, and at England level too, he and Leach have more often than not been rivals for the same single spinner’s berth. Bess made his debut against Pakistan in 2018 when Leach suffered a broken thumb in training, and reclaimed his place last winter after illness forced his team-mate to fly home early from the South Africa tour. But Thursday promises to be the first time that they take the field in the same Test for England, and while Root is mindful of putting them under pressure to thrive in the conditions, he is hopeful that their familiarity as a partnership will bear fruit for their country.”Of course they will be expected to take wickets if it starts turning,” Root said. “Leachy had great success here on the last tour, Dom had success when it turned in Port Elizabeth. They’ve got good experiences and they will gain a lot of confidence from knowing when the conditions are in their favour they’ve had success.”Nowhere has that been more the case than at Taunton, however, where Leach has claimed 164 wickets at 20.36 and Bess 60 at 23.93, with both men benefiting not only from the assistance offered by “Ciderabad’s” surfaces, but from the knowledge of how to exploit such assistance with attacking fields and aggressive lines. Last year, Bess also worked with one of the best in the business, the former Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath, during a spin camp in Mumbai.Related

“I think that will hold him in really good stead,” Root said of Bess, who bowled 16 overs in England’s warm-up match earlier this week. “The fact that he’s experienced big-spinning conditions already at home in Somerset colours, and he also had success in Port Elizabeth where it did spin quite drastically. We know he has the ability and skills if it does start spinning quite quickly to take advantage of that. It’s a really good opportunity for him to show what he can do in these conditions.”Wherever you go in the world your role will change in different conditions,” Root added. “If you’re looking at rounding out the best all-round package as a player, you have to be able to experience that and understand what your role is in those given conditions. As someone right at the start of his career he’s still learning that and that’s exciting to see that he’s had success already, and coming into these conditions where they might be slightly more in his favour, he could potentially really make a mark on this tour.”Nevertheless, having indicated that England would opt for three seamers and two spinners in their Test line-up for this tour – a significant change of tack from the three-spin line-up that won here two years ago – Root reiterated the need for his quick bowlers to play their part too if England are to emulate their success on the last tour.”I ultimately think it’s how we operate as a whole bowling group,” he said. “It’s important we take our chances, something we did really well last time around. It’s important to build pressure for long periods of time. It’s something we’ve done well in our own conditions, can we do it out here as well?”Seam will play a big part, whether that is building pressure or roughing batsman up for a period of time so the spinners can come into the game. With the weather around, it’s quite tacky, so that might open the door for some of the seamers. Collectively, it’s really important that we look at trying to take 20 wickets as a whole bowling group and we don’t focus on one or two individuals to do all of the donkey work for us.”
Manchester United are currently busy behind the scenes trying to secure a number of signings to bolster Erik ten Hag's squad.
The Dutchman penned a new contract at Old Trafford last week and now looks set to get backed by the new ownership group headed up by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
That said, they must learn from the mistakes of the past. No puzzling signings like Antony; they must be wiser with the way they spend their money.
Fortunately, it looks as though they could be doing exactly that as they hone in on a multitude of defensive targets.

Man United's centre-back targets
With Raphael Varane leaving, Jonny Evans now 36 and Lisandro Martinez rather injury-prone, it's a necessity that Ten Hag welcomes one or two new centre-backs to United this summer.
It is no secret that Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite is a key target with the Red Devils having now reportedly lodged two bids for his services, although both have been rejected.
Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite
Talks have been ongoing to secure the signature of Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt while a deal has even been agreed to sign wonderkid Leny Yoro from Lille.
The difficulty with that one is that the teenage defender prefers Real Madrid and is waiting for them to make the call.
So, what should the new recruitment team do? Well, Teddy Sheringham has had his say.
What Teddy Sheringham has said about United's transfer plans
At this current moment in time, De Ligt seems the most likely man to arrive at Man united.
The latest is that they have been given the green light to sign the player. However, Sheringham doesn't think he'd be a worthwhile acquisition.
Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast on behalf of Crypto Sports betting, he stated: "I don’t think that he is a player that Manchester United need. They need leaders and strong characters."
Who should United go for instead? Well, the former England striker recommended one of his fellow countrymen.
Sheringham continued: "Marc Guehi is believed to be heading to Manchester United and I would prefer a big strong defender than another ball player, they need more winners and more leaders on the pitch now.
"Any top player heading to Manchester United can improve the team and they need to get signings right to be able to push on next season."
Guehi endured a rather injury-hit campaign with Crystal Palace last season, playing 25 times in the Premier League. However, he has risen to prominence with England at Euro 2024.
The defender missed the quarter-final victory over Switzerland through suspension with Ezri Konsa taking his place. It's expected he will come back into the starting lineup for the semi-final against, ironically, De Ligt's Netherlands side.

Guehi has been nothing short of exceptional in Germany this summer and could quite possibly be hailed as England's Player of the Tournament.
Is that enough to convince United to move for him? Well, with a reported asking price of £65m, he could be cheaper than the aforementioned Branthwaite who has been touted at around £80m.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
It was also a pleasant afternoon for Bellingham, who scored his first goal of the season for his club. The 21-year-old endured a slow start to the campaign as he battled injury and accommodated new team-mate Kylian Mbappe, but he'll hope to kick on from here and reach last season's heights.
The England international was full of praise for Vinicius after the win, praising his attitude and labelling him Real Madrid's "inspirational leader".
WHAT BELLINGHAM SAID
"I am proud of him for how he behaves on the field, he is a leader for us and we look to him for inspiration and when he plays like that he is unstoppable," Bellingham said.

West Ham United reportedly have a new attacking target in the current transfer window, according to Sky Sports.
West Ham striker transfer rumours
The Irons have been productive so far this summer, signing teenage winger Luis Guilherme, experienced goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and centre-back Max Kilman.
However, a new centre-forward is seemingly needed ahead of Julen Lopetegui’s first season in charge at the London Stadium, with Michail Antonio and Danny Ings the only two senior centre-forward options.

ByTom Coates Jul 29, 2024
There hasn’t been a shortage of targets either, with a number of attacking names linked with the Irons. The most concrete target in recent weeks has been Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, with claims late last week even suggesting a verbal £35m agreement was close.
As we know, a move is yet to progress, and there appear to be alternative targets to Duran. Villarreal’s Alexander Sorloth looks like one of those, with an opening bid worth £25m made to the La Liga side.
Meanwhile, an enquiry was made for Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, whereas Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi has also been offered to the Hammers and an offer was ready for former Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn, now at Ajax.
A new name has now emerged courtesy of reliable Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, though.
West Ham eyeing Niclas Füllkrug move
According to Sheth, who took to X on Monday afternoon, West Ham are now eyeing a move for Borussia Dortmund forward Niclas Füllkrug, with the Germany international in the final two years of his deal.
Füllkrug is 31 years of age and has spent the entirety of his career so far playing in Germany. He began on the books of Werder Bremen before a loan to second-tier side Greuther Fürth which was followed by a permanent exit to 1.FC Nuremberg in 2014.
niclas-fullkrug
Since then, he moved to Hannover 96 before a return to Werder Bremen and then joined Borussia Dortmund last summer, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists in 29 Bundesliga appearances in the 2023/24 campaign.
That form resulted in him being selected for Euro 2024, where he scored against Scotland and Switzerland, receiving praise from journalist Josh Bunting who described Füllkrug as a "complete number 9".
In total, for club and country, Füllkrug has scored 125 senior goals during his career. A move to London now looks like it could be one to watch, however, at the age of 31, you could argue that West Ham would be signing a striker that is potentially not a long-term solution for Lopetegui.
