PONTE VAI PRA CIMA NO INÍCIO

Mohammad Rizwan lifts Pakistan on truncated day against England

Pakistan grateful to wicketkeeper’s second Test fifty before bad light brings early close

The Report by Valkerie Baynes14-Aug-2020

An astute half-century by Pakistan No. 7 Mohammad Rizwan threw light on an otherwise dreary second day of the second Test against England.Rizwan’s unbeaten knock of 60 pushed his side towards something that might be approaching a par score given the challenging conditions at a damp and overcast Ageas Bowl. After a laudable performance behind the stumps in the opening Test of this series at Old Trafford, wicketkeeper-batsman Rizwan resumed unbeaten on 4 having come in with his side 120 for 5 shortly before rain and bad light stopped play on Thursday evening. He and Babar Azam added 29 runs in the hour of play to lunch after more bad weather had delayed the start by 90 minutes. In that time, Azam saw off four overs from James Anderson in which Anderson conceded only four runs but ended his spell not looking like taking a wicket.By the first break, Pakistan were 155 for 5 and Azam was five runs shy of his half century. Stuart Broad struck in the third over back, however, with a lovely ball on fourth-stump which drew a nick and sent Azam on his way, caught behind, for 47.Rizwan survived a chance on 14 when he top-edged a pull off Broad that found the tip of a diving Jos Buttler’s glove, although it would have been a sensational catch had he managed to gather it in.Having struggled to make inroads, England’s bowlers came back with an apparent plan to bowl fuller after lunch and it paid dividends for Anderson, who pitched the ball up and had Yasir Shah caught behind slashing at his outswinger. That gave Anderson his third scalp after his two the previous day and, with Pakistan 171 for 7, it really was down to Rizwan – who by that stage was yet to reach 20 himself – to produce an innings of note.Shaheen Shah Afridi survived after edging Sam Curran to first slip, with Joe Root seemingly uncertain whether the ball had carried. Although the soft signal from the on-field umpires was out, replays suggested the ball had indeed touched the ground, prompting third umpire Richard Illingworth to give Afridi a reprieve.Afridi ended up being run out by a brilliant direct hit from Dom Sibley after taking off for a single when there was no run to be had. With Rizwan sending his partner back, Sibley swooped on the ball from third slip and threw down the stumps at the non-striker’s end as Afridi tried in vain to get back.Playing his eighth Test, Rizwan responded to his task by batting intelligently with the tailenders while adding runs where he could, including a glorious shot off Chris Woakes over square leg that looked like going all the way before it dropped inside the rope. He took another two boundaries in three balls from Curran, one of them a bold little hoick over the slips.Rizwan managed the strike well, bringing up his half-century with a dash for two after pressing Broad into the off side with Mohammad Abbas stretching to make his ground on the return. The partnership added 39 in ten overs, as England struggled in their attempts to separate Rizwan and No. 10 Abbas.Abbas faced 19 balls for his 2 but was eventually out to the first ball he faced after bad light had prompted tea to be taken early, plumb lbw to give Broad his third. That was five overs after England had taken the second new ball and Broad sent down just five deliveries more before the players left the field again for bad light and stumps were called more than an hour and half later.Rizwan, with a second Test fifty under his belt following his highest score of 95 against Australia last November, will resume with more work to do, especially in the face of England’s bowlers looking to wrap the Pakistan innings up.He may also still have work to do to silence a small band of critics, who have treated him harsly since he replaced former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as first-choice wicketkeeper. But, with the greater goal of trying to help his side in their quest to level the series in mind, he cannot possibly be faulted.

Aaron Finch and David Warner accept blame for failed chase but Australia's middle order exposed

Australia failed to score 39 off 35 balls after an opening stand of 98 in 11 overs

Andrew McGlashan05-Sep-2020David Warner and Aaron Finch accepted the blame for not being able to take Australia across the line in the opening T20I at the Ageas Bowl, but the startling collapse renewed the focus on their middle-order which has been the one area of the team to struggle when needed. After an opening stand of 98 in 11 overs, Australia’s equation came down to 39 off 35 balls – seemingly a canter with Warner and Steven Smith going well – but Adil Rashid struck twice in his last over, the second scalp when Glenn Maxwell opted not to see out the legspinner, and the recalled Marcus Stoinis laboured in finding the rope. The final six overs of Australia’s chase brought just one boundary when Stoinis managed to heave Tom Curran over long-off in the last but he was then unable to scramble the nine needed off the final four balls. The limp end had echoes of Australia’s only other recent T20I defeat against South Africa, at Port Elizabeth, when they couldn’t chase 160 despite being 98 for 1 in the 13th over with Warner and Smith set. On that occasion, Warner was left stranded as the middle-order managed just a single boundary between them. This time Warner was part of the collapse when he was cleaned up giving himself room to a Jofra Archer yorker.ALSO READ: Eoin Morgan hails bowlers’ belief as England steal improbable epic”We pride ourselves on being there at the end,” Warner said. “We talk about one batter being there and in, and the next guy comes in and tries to take those calculated risks – and we bat to the end. If you get a good delivery you can’t do anything about it but that’s what we pride ourselves on and that’s basically what our game is built around.”Finch defended the shot selection of Smith, picking out deep midwicket, and Maxwell who slammed a drive to cover in Rashid’s final over.Alex Carey chops on to his stumps•AFP”They were both playing to a gameplan, so I think if you can separate the execution and the gameplan, you can look a bit deeper into it,” he said. “T20 games are about making sure you take on your options and matching that up with the right gameplan so there’s plenty to work on. I’d probably be more critical of myself and Davey, who got us off to good start and neither of us really kicked on to have a match-winning contribution.”While Australia had won seven of their eight completed T20Is last season against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa, the middle-order was not overly tested during that period due to the success of the top three. However, the defeats here and at Port Elizabeth in February highlighted that it is the weakness of this side.”We knew that England were going to keep coming hard and they executed really well,” Finch said. “We just struggled to find the boundary a bit in that 12-18 over mark. That is something to keep working on and that’s not the first time it’s happened, so as long as the boys keep learning and improve at it, lesson learned.”It is notable that the top score of a batsman at No. 4 to No. 8 in that period – those who could be viewed as needing to finish an innings in a variety of situations – was Smith’s 30 off 15 balls when he was pushed down to No. 5 against South Africa in Cape Town. There has also been a reasonable turnover of players in those positions including Ben McDermott, Ashton Turner, Matthew Wade and Mitchell Marsh. The latter two are part of this tour but were the players to make way in this match for the return of Maxwell and the slightly surprising recall of Stoinis.

Two days before the series, coach Justin Langer had said that he saw Stoinis as having to force his way back into the side at the top of the order which is where he had a prolific Big Bash last season but in the end he returned at No. 5.”I think we just have to try to be a little bit smarter and work out how we’re going to hit our boundaries,” Warner said of the failed chase. “We have to try to keep rotating strike and keep finding the boundary in those middle overs.”However, after what was their first international for more than six months, Finch was not too downbeat despite having seen the opening match slip from Australia’s grasp.”There was plenty of stuff to be positive about. If you can separate the result and just look at it at individual points, I think there was some great stuff. Obviously it would have been ideal to get over the line, but England are a bloody good side.”You look at how they went approached their middle overs as well and they were quite one-dimensional with how they went about it, but it was a simple plan and they executed it which was the most important thing. We had a couple of good hit-outs against each other but when you pull on the colours against England, it’s a different thing.”

Man Utd and Ratcliffe eyeing £35m cut-price replacement for Raphaël Varane

With Raphael Varane set to leave Manchester United this summer, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly turned his attention to landing a replacement for the Frenchman in a cut-price deal.

Man Utd transfer news

Varane confirmed the news that he would be leaving Manchester United at the end of the season following two years at Old Trafford. The Frenchman at least ended on a high, having started in the Red Devils' shock FA Cup final victory over Manchester City. Running out 2-1 winners, Varane bowed out in the best way possible.

Now, however, those at Old Trafford have turned their attention towards finding a replacement for the former Real Madrid star, with the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite and Antonio Silva already mentioned. Branthwaite, in particular, would be an interesting option given the season that he has just enjoyed at Everton as a clear standout. As the Toffees look to ease financial concerns too, United could swoop in.

Alas, Everton aren't the only club in need of funds. According to Charlie Gordon of the Daily Express, Sporting CP in Portugal need to raise money and Manchester United are considering a move for Ousmane Diomande in a deal that could be worth as little as £35m. What's more, with interest reportedly cooling elsewhere in the Premier League, Ratcliffe should be perfectly placed to land his Varane replacement.

Still just 20 years old and coming off the back of an excellent season in Portugal, Diomande could quickly prove to be the bargain of the summer if United make their move.

"Elite" Diomande can fill Varane void

Whilst Varane's time at Manchester United may go down as what might have been at some points after injury troubles, replacing a World Cup and Champions League winner is still no easy task, but signing Diomande would do exactly that. Described as "elite" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, the central defender can step into the Frenchman's role and more with a move to Old Trafford.

As Ratcliffe looks to finally transform Manchester United into a club capable of competing among the Premier League's very best, signings such as Diomande would go a long way.

The Sporting man ticks the box for his age, potential and current ability, which is particularly important when rebuilding Erik ten Hag's backline, given that Jonny Evans is 36 years old and Harry Maguire is 31. Only time will tell whether Diomande is the man that Ratcliffe turns toward, however, with a number of options linked with a summer move.

Arsenal made some massive moves in the transfer market last summer as they snapped up two dynamic English superstars in Rice and Russo. While they forked out £105 million ($137m) for Rice, Russo joined as a free agent upon the expiry of her contract with United.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT RICE SAID

Reflecting on Russo's transfer to Arsenal, In an interview with , Rice recounted: "When I signed here, I signed for a massive club. A lot of expectations. But I do remember her singing as we bumped into each other in the gym and then we just got speaking a little bit. It's just come around so quickly. A year has flown by now. We both had an amazing year. In the second year, we hope to be successful."

He added: "There was so much talk about her coming and I remember seeing that loads of clubs wanted her. But she chose Arsenal and when I bumped into her we were talking about how excited she was to be here. She made the right decision and so did I."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Arsenal teams are chasing league glory and to do that they must overthrow Chelsea in the WSL and Manchester City in the Premier League. Russo admitted that the squad is expected to conquer England and they will be giving their all to land some silverware.

"As Dec said, coming to Arsenal, there is a responsibility to win trophies," Russo said.

"The club is on this journey and the women's team is the most successful club in England. There is a responsibility to win trophies and to step up and perform. We wanted it more last season, we had a great pre-season, and we should have a massive year ahead. We know the standard of our team is to go out and win trophies. So that's what we want this year."

Rice echoed Russo's thoughts and added: "When we came back, it was like one of the manager's first meetings – in terms of like how can we be better this season, how can we upgrade. We missed out on the league last year by two points, the year before was four points. So, it was how can we keep getting better and striving for more. We are really close. It is the finer details, the Villa game which let us down towards the end – we reflect on that. It was disappointing but overall such a positive year again. You know the players they (Arsenal Women) have signed this summer, I'm sure that this year they will be lifting the league. Their squad is unbelievable."

Romano: Liverpool "expected" to open talks for £30m target who Slot wants

As they look to ensure a smooth transition into the Arne Slot era, Liverpool are reportedly expected to begin talks to hand the Dutchman a fresh face that he personally wants to sign this summer.

Liverpool transfer news

Starting fresh without Klopp won't be easy, but with Michael Edwards at the helm, Liverpool's transition should certainly be easier than it could have been. The returning club chief, unlike in his first stint, finds a squad already capable of winning silverware with added adjustments now needed to take Liverpool 2.0 back next to Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

£85,000-a-week Liverpool "lifesaver" could repeat Henderson blow for Slot

This would be a frustrating start for Slot.

ByTom Cunningham May 31, 2024

Those added adjustments are likely to arrive in the summer transfer window, with the Reds already linked with the likes of Antonio Silva and Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins. The latter could be a particularly impressive signing, especially since it would also weaken a top-four rival in Villa, whilst arguably unleashing Mohamed Salah again once and for all at Anfield. Only time will tell whether Edwards can pull off such a deal, however.

Ollie Watkins scores for Aston Villa

The same can be said for Crysencio Summerville. According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are "expected to begin" talks to sign Summerville soon with Chelsea also eyeing a similar move for the Dutch winger.

After Leeds United suffered play-off heartbreak at Wembley, losing 1-0 against Southampton, a deal should be easier to negotiate on paper for Liverpool this summer, as Summerville potentially takes the Premier League step he didn't get at Elland Road this season.

The Championship's Player of the Season, Summerville has attracted plenty of fans, which seemingly includes Slot, who personally wants to sign the Leeds star in the coming months, according to reports. He's certainly a player capable of stepping up to the top-flight, but now it's up to Chelsea and Liverpool to make their moves.

"Creative" Summerville can replace Diaz

As Luis Diaz's future remains in doubt, Liverpool would be wise to start thinking about potential replacements, making Summerville an ideal move. The winger, who is still just 22 years old, has proven his goalscoring touch in the Championship and if replicated in the Premier League, would offer the Reds the ruthlessness that Diaz lacks in front of goal.

What's most impressive is that Summerville, valued at £30m, outperformed his expected goals by just under three goals, highlighting his clinical nature in front of goal. And where he was clinical, Diaz was wasteful, underperforming by over three goals in a frustrating campaign at times.

It's that form that saw Summerville handed impressive praise throughout the season, with Daniel Farke saying via The Leeds Press: “This is exactly what we need, to think about the side [and] don’t be annoyed when you’re sometimes not in the starting line-up. It’s more like when you’re on the pitch, give everything for this group.

“His reaction, not just in possession, because he’s an outstanding creative player, we know this, but also how hard he worked for the team. This is exactly what we need and many compliments to him.”

Newcastle could replace Guimaraes by signing £50m "Aldi Jude Bellingham"

Newcastle United had a frustrating finale to their 2023/24 season. Despite finishing in seventh place, and celebrating a Europa Conference League place, they were essentially eliminated from the competition.

This was due to Manchester United’s FA Cup victory, which won them Europa League football, knocking Chelsea into the Europa Conference League and the Magpies out of European competition altogether.

Eddie Howe’s side had a slow start to the season and were eliminated from the Champions League in tough circumstances. Despite having qualification on the cards going into the last game of the group stage, a 2-1 defeat at home to Italian giants AC Milan saw them dumped out of the prestigious tournament, finishing bottom of the group.

Without continental commitments and lots of fixture congestion next season, Howe and his side have the chance to climb the Premier League table further and get themselves back into the top four or top six.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

It will be a big transfer window for the Magpies, who need to strengthen in certain areas of the squad, but could also face a firesale over the summer. They need to sell players in order to comply with FFP regulations, as The Guardian reports. With that in mind, they have already been linked with a replacement for one potential outgoing.

Newcastle could land Guimaraes replacement

The player in question here is Nottingham Forest’s talismanic attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, who has been linked with a move to the club, as well as being touted as a potential replacement for Bruno Guimarães.

As Football Insider reported last month, Newcastle are in the race to sign the Englishman this summer. The piece clarified that the 24-year-old was also 'a target for Newcastle in January', and are now revisiting the deal during the summer window.

However, according to the report, Howe’s side are not the only team that are interested in signing Forest’s number ten over the summer. Tottenham Hotspur are also linked with a move for the 24-year-old, as they look to add depth in the attacking midfield ranks, for which they currently only have James Maddison as a viable option.

A report from John Percy of The Telegraph explains that Forest 'will demand in excess' of £50m for Gibbs-White this summer, should he depart the club.

Why Gibbs-White would be a good signing for Newcastle

It seems almost inevitable that Guimarães will leave St James’ Park over the summer. He has been linked with a move to Manchester City for around £100m, according to journalist Dean Jones via GiveMeSport.

It has been a productive season for Gibbs-White in the Premier League in 2023/24. He has scored five goals and registered ten assists, playing in all but one of the games, 37 in total. Only two Newcastle players had more top-flight goal involvements than him this season; Alexander Isak with 23 and Anthony Gordon with 21. Ironically, Guimarães was the only Magpies player with as many as Gibbs-White’s 15.

Stats from Sofascore

Gibbs-White is a masterful ball-carrier, and he has excelled in a transitional system at the City Ground over the last two seasons. As per FBref, Gibbs-White averages 3.28 take-ons per 90 minutes, which places him in the top 5%, and completes an average of 1.25 take-ons per 90, ranking him in the top 12% of Premier League midfielders. The 24-year-old also averages 2.28 progressive carries per 90, which places him in the top 17%.

Not only that, he is very good creatively, too. Gibbs-White averages 2.11 key passes per 90, which places him in the top 7% of Premier League midfielders, with his 0.29 assists per 90 ranking him in the top 2%.

Off the ball, Gibbs-White works hard, too. He is dominant in the air, winning 1.71 aerial duels per 90 minutes, ranking him in the top 13%. Not only that, he makes an average of 5.10 ball recoveries per 90 minutes in total.

Football analyst Raj Chohan described Gibbs-White as the “Aldi Jude Bellingham”. His output and Fbref stats make it clear why he is being compared to one of the world’s best players – the Real Madrid star having been tipped for the Ballon d'Or this year by Brazilian legend, Kaka.

Like Bellingham – who has dazzled this season with 35 goals and assists during his first campaign in Spain – Gibbs-White has the ability to feature anywhere across the midfield, with his deployment in a deeper role at times ensuring he could be an ideal replacement or successor to Guimaraes.

For £50m, Gibbs-White would be a good investment for Howe and his team, adding quality and depth, as well as replacing Guimarães. They would also have £50m to invest from the left-over sale of the Brazilian.

It remains to be seen if a deal gets done, but it would certainly be a positive move for the Magpies.

£50m star stalls new contract with Tottenham in pole position to sign him

A £50 million star's talks over a new contract have stalled, with Tottenham in pole position to sign him for Ange Postecoglou this summer.

Spurs identify three key areas to make major summer signings

Spurs are said to be targeting three major signings in key areas of the squad, coming after Postecoglou was frank in admitting that Spurs need to implement "drastic" change.

Tottenham could re-sign £30 million player who Dele Alli called fantastic

ByEmilio Galantini May 10, 2024

It is believed technical director Johan Lange wants to back Postecoglou with a new striker, centre-back and midfielder, as reported by The Times, with a host of current senior players also up for sale to fund these potential moves.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Emerson Royal, Giovani Lo Celso, Ryan Sessegnon and Bryan Gil could all leave N17 (Tom Allnutt), while it is claimed that Tottenham are also open to suitable offers for Yves Bissouma and Richarlison.

With Hojbjerg and potentially Bissouma up for grabs this summer, it is without question that Postecoglou would require a midfield replacement and number six more suited to the Australian's system.

A few interesting names have been linked in this regard, like Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with the Brazilian enjoying a brilliant campaign yet again under Gian Piero Gasperini in Serie A. The 24-year-old has notched six goals and an assist over 34 Italian top-flight cameos this term, which has turned a few heads at N17.

Of course, there is also Chelsea star Conor Gallagher, who has been repeatedly linked since last summer. The Englishman, who has starred under former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, could have to be sold with his contract expiring next year.

The Blues are facing a battle to comply with PSR, and reports suggest they may need to raise £100 million through player sales by June 30. Selling Gallagher would be a deeply unpopular move at Stamford Bridge, but their loss could be Tottenham's undoubted gain.

Tottenham in pole position to sign Gallagher as new deal talks stall

The "priceless" 24-year-old, as he's been called by Pochettino, is actually thought to be valued at around £50 million, and would count as pure profit if Chelsea were to do a deal with Spurs. It is also believed elsewhere that Postecoglou "really appreciates" Gallagher (Fabrizio Romano).

“You wouldn’t be surprised if he went to someone like Spurs," said pundit Pat Nevin last month.

"Obviously that would be particularly painful for Chelsea fans. But what a player he would be for them, I’d probably say he’s better suited to Spurs, the way he plays. The transfer situation is really quite delicate with Chelsea because we don’t know who is making the decisions and that’s what it comes down to. If it comes down to the manager then he will make changes and will want to get rid of a number of players and bring in more experience in certain areas."
