Berkshire clinch Minor Counties Championship in one-wicket thriller

Berkshire 164 (Morris 89, Hemmings 4-21) and 97 for 9 (Maxfield 7-48) beat Staffordshire 150 and 110 (Nugent 5-40, Rishton 4-42) by one wicket.Berkshire held their nerve to win the Minor Counties Championship for a record-equalling fourth successive season after they scrambled a one-wicket victory over Staffordshire on the third day of the final at Banbury.Berkshire were set just 97 to win but that modest target looked like being beyond them when they slipped to 87 for 9 with Staffordshire seamer Tim Maxfield taking seven of the wickets. But Staffordshire could not dislodge Berkshire opener Jack Davies who batted throughout the innings for 42 not out. With the support of last man Mungo Russell, Davies managed to whittle down the runs, striking Rob Hemmings for an important boundary, taking a single off the same bowler to level the scores and then clinching victory in a remarkable low-scoring final by taking the winning single off Maxfield.Berkshire’s win equalled Devon’s record of four successive Championships under the captaincy of Peter Roebuck between 1994 and 1997 and gave them their seventh national title in four season to go with four Western Division crowns.Defeat was hard on Maxfield who finished with career-best figures of 7 for 48 in a brave effort from Staffordshire, the Eastern Division champions.Ball dominated bat throughout the match on a pitch that helped the seamers and only one batsman, Berkshire’s Richard Morris in the first innings, made 50. Davies was the only other batsman to top 30.There were 13 LBWs in the match, ten of them against Berkshire with five in each innings.Berkshire began the day needing 73 more runs for victory and Staffordshire requiring seven more wickets. The equation became 73 runs with six wickets in hand after Manraj Johal bowled Middlesex T20 batsman Dan Lincoln without addition to the overnight total.Maxfield then bowled Berkshire captain James Morris and Johal trapped Andy Rishton LBW to make it 40 for 6.But the experienced Chris Peploe (15) and Tom Nugent (13) supplied valuable lower-order runs in important partnerships with Davies for the seventh and eighth wickets which got Berkshire to within 16 of their target.Maxfield then had Nugent and Luke Beaven LBW but Davies, who is on Middlesex’s books, and Russell held firm for 23 balls while they scraped together the last ten runs.

Newcastle now preparing move to sign Arsenal star in big-money transfer

After a season to forget in the Premier League, Newcastle United must go again this summer and make up for previous mistakes in the transfer market by solving the current problems in Eddie Howe's squad. And there may not be a better way to do that than by welcoming a Premier League champion.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies, of course, had a summer to forget last time out, signing Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento, Harvey Barnes and Lewis Hall. In a disastrous campaign, Tonali was almost instantly handed a lengthy ban for breaching betting rules and has only just been allowed to return to training, Barnes has struggled with injuries and Hall has struggled to win the faith of Howe. As we approach the end of the season, Livramento is the only summer arrival to have made a truly positive impact.

As they look ahead to the forthcoming summer window, the Magpies will have to act without Dan Ashworth, who has been placed on gardening leave amid rumours of a move to Manchester United. the Old Trafford-bound sporting director could miss one of Newcastle's smartest coups yet, however.

Man Utd sporting director target Dan Ashworth watches on.

According to Football Transfers, Howe and Newcastle are preparing a move for Oleksandr Zinchenko, who Arsenal value at €45m (£39m) this summer. Those at St James' Park aren't the only interested party either, with Bayern Munich also reportedly eyeing a move for the left-back in an attempt to replace Alphonso Davies, who currently looks on course to become a Real Madrid player sooner rather than later.

Howe reportedly wants to strengthen his defence and signing a Premier League winner in Zinchenko would certainly be a place to start. As Newcastle look to make their return to European football next season, the Arsenal left-back could be one to watch this summer.

"Perfectionist" Zinchenko is better than Burn

Not only would Zinchenko bring winning experience to the current Newcastle side, but he'd also be an undoubted upgrade on Dan Burn, who has struggled at times this season. The Ukraine international and multiple time league winner, for just £39m, would be one of the bargains of the summer, as his stats show.

That said, it remains to be seen whether Mikel Arteta would sanction such a departure away from The Emirates this summer. The Arsenal boss was full of praise for Zinchenko when he arrived in North London in 2022, saying via Squawka: “First of all, his mentality. He’s used to winning – winning is the only thing and winning in the right way.

“He’s a perfectionist and a really demanding boy, I know him so well, and after that he brings qualities that we didn’t have in the squad. He gives us a different option to play within the role in different spaces, and I’m really happy to have him.”

In what could be a busy summer, Newcastle would be wise to target a player of Zinchenko's calibre as they look to upgrade on Burn and add some experience to Howe's side.

Marcus Harris determined to learn from Ashes troubles to secure Test future

The opener knows he needs runs even beyond his opening day century against South Australia

Alex Malcolm10-Oct-2019Incumbent Australia opener Marcus Harris knows his Test spot is up for grabs but he views his lean Ashes series as a positive learning experience rather than a negative.Harris managed just 58 runs in six innings after coming in for the last three Tests of the series as the replacement for Cameron Bancroft. He returned from England acutely aware that his spot was in jeopardy for the first home Test against Pakistan in November and that runs in the first four Sheffield Shield matches were needed to maintain his place.Harris delivered on the opening day of the new season with 116 against South Australia at Junction Oval with national selector Trevor Hohns watching on. But even after his century, he admitted he was still under pressure to keep his Test place.”I’m not sure there’s many spots in the team that’s anyone’s at the moment,” Harris said. “Probably Smithy [Steven Smith] is the only one who has his name written in black permanent marker. So obviously technically it’s mine at the moment but I’ll have to do quite well to make sure it’s mine at the start of the series. A hundred in the first game is probably going to help a little bit.”Harris said he could have easily doubted himself after his Ashes performance, but wants to use it to make him a better player.”I think it’s a great learning curve in hopefully an early part of my career and I can look back on it and learn from it rather than looking at it in a negative way. I’d played in England and done well in all the tour games leading up to the Test matches, so I felt like I was batting really well. It was probably just the level of bowling with the way Broad and Archer bowled.”I probably hadn’t faced too much bowling like that before, and it was probably just the way the ball reacted over there. I wasn’t as used to it seaming as far as it did. That was a good challenge. And to be fair it was a challenge for every player in the series besides Smithy. Everyone had their moments in the series where they really battled.”Harris credits Victoria coach Andrew McDonald and his batting coach Lachie Stevens for getting him back on track.”I spoke to Ronnie [Andrew McDonald] about if I were the only player in the whole series that battled you’d be like ‘oh well I’ve got some serious issues’,” Harris said. “But a lot of people battled. So that’s why I sort of come out of it looking at it as a great experience, great to be a part of, I didn’t do what I wanted to do but it doesn’t affect me too much so I can learn from it and use it as a positive.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The former Manchester United attacker made amends for his miss when he finally found the back of the net during the penalty shootout as the Selecao picked up a 3-0 win in the tie-breaker to book a quarter-final berth. Earlier in the second half of extra time, Benjamin Sesko had a golden opportunity to finish off the game as he found himself one-on-one with Diogo Costa from a counter-attack, however, he failed to keep his cool and put the ball into the back of the net.

Spurs hit the jackpot with £86m ace who was once ahead of Foden & Saka

The development and togetherness of Tottenham Hotspur as both a team and as a club have been brilliant this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s arrival has been the main catalyst for this, with his philosophy and style of play being enjoyable for both the players and the fans.

Thankfully, it’s also bringing success on the field, with Spurs just five points behind Aston Villa in fifth while also having a game in hand.

Cristian Romero with Tottenham teammates

A lot of the recent culture shift at the club is also down to the success in the transfer market, with new signings performing on the pitch.

That said, there’s one player in the Spurs squad who was once better than Phil Foden.

Dejan Kulusevski vs Phil Foden in 2020

2020 was the year that Dejan Kulusevski and Foden really began to cement themselves as future superstars, with the two creators recognised as that on a global scale.

In the 2020 Golden Boy ranking, the Swede was actually ranked above the Man City gem, finishing sixth, one place better than Foden in seventh. Interestingly, they both ranked ahead of Arsenal's golden boy, Bukayo Saka, too.

During the 2019/20 season, Foden was still working his way into the City squad, with Pep Guardiola managing his minutes. The number 47 played 23 times in the Premier League, scoring five goals and picking up two assists.

However, Kulusevski had taken on much more responsibility for his Parma side during that same campaign, tearing up the Serie A for a mid-table team. The Spurs winger scored ten goals and provided nine assists in 33 starts for the Italian club.

Phil Foden.

The left-footed gem joined Parma on loan as a Juventus player, the club that Kulusevski eventually joined Spurs from on loan in January 2022.

Kulusevski’s value in 2024

Kulusevski was an instant hit at Spurs, playing an important role in the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, where he netted five goals and picked up eight assists in 14 starts.

The loan was for 18 months, enabling the “superb” Sweden international, as per Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, to complete the entire 2022/23 season at Tottenham.

Dejan-Kulusevski-Spurs-Tottenham

In truth, Kulusevski struggled to progress from the form he showed the season prior, netting twice and picking up seven assists in the league, but it was a transition period for the club.

Nonetheless, Spurs made the 23-year-old’s loan permanent in the summer, spending just £25m to acquire his services on a five-year deal.

Fast forward to today, and he’s the most expensive Spurs player in regards to CIES’ Football Observatory’s estimated value, even being worth over three times more than Son who's valued at just £26m, owing to the short amount of time still left on his contract.

3. Romero, Porro, Johnson

4. Van de Ven, Sarr, Richarlison, Maddison

5. Hojberg, Werner, Skipp, Emerson, Son

£26m

The attacker still has plenty of potential that he’s yet to reach, and due to the lack of quality left-footed right-wingers on the market, his profile is almost priceless.

Furthermore, Kulusevski is starting to thrive once again in a Tottenham shirt under the influence of Postecoglou, scoring six goals and picking up two assists this campaign already.

Nonetheless, it’s clear that Spurs truly hit the jackpot by signing Kulusevski, who continues to improve and impress on the right of the attack, and he is certainly living up to his predicted pathway.

Veteran Darren Stevens hammers career-best 237 to spur Kent contract talks

Double-ton for Darren Stevens and a Sam Billings century lift Kent from 39 for 5

Kent 482 for 8 (Stevens 237, Billings 138, Olivier 5-108) v YorkshireDarren Stevens continued his bid for a new Kent contract with a quite remarkable career-best 237 to help steer the visitors out of early trouble at 39 for 5 on day one against Yorkshire at Emerald Headingley.Kent’s top order, including South Africa captain Francois du Plessis, was shattered by the pace of Duanne Olivier with the new ball at the start of this battle for third place in the Specsavers County Championship Division One. A Test team-mate of du Plessis’ up until the start of the year, Olivier struck four times in a seven-over burst, only for Kent to close on 482 for 8 from 96 overs.Stevens, 43, united with captain and fellow centurion Sam Billings to share 346 inside 65 overs from mid-morning to mid-evening and change the complexion of this fixture in record-breaking fashion, with 28 fours and nine sixes in 225 balls.Billings, with 138 off 209, justified his own decision to first of all opt for a toss and then elect to bat with his second successive century.Speaking at the end of the day, Kent’s director of cricket, Paul Downton, congratulated Stevens on his “brilliant achievement” and said the club would be opening talks on an extension.”Darren has put together some match-winning performances for Kent in recent matches and we would be foolish to ignore his recent form,” Downton said. “Obviously, such performances cannot go unnoticed and we’ll be sitting down with ‘Stevo’ after this match to discuss his future. It has been great to see his return to form.”Belligerent Stevens was told in July that Kent would not be offering him a new contract after 15 years with them. But last week they hinted at a u-turn following 10 wickets in the match and a first-innings 88 in the win over Nottinghamshire. This was his first century since May 2017.Yorkshire made a racing start courtesy of their marquee signing last winter, Olivier, in conditions which were good for batting but helpful for bowlers at 10.30am.He picked up the prized wicket of former colleague du Plessis, debuting for Kent in red-ball cricket after a short spell in T20 cricket last month. Du Plessis, warming up for a Test series in India next month, was bowled through the gate by an in-ducker as the score fell to 8 for 3 in the fifth over.Earlier, in the third, Oliver trapped Zak Crawley lbw and had Ollie Robinson caught behind as both men attempted to leave alone.Olivier’s fourth wicket – another compatriot Heino Kuhn, trapped lbw playing forwards – came after Daniel Bell-Drummond lost his off stump to one which kept low from Matthew Fisher in the eighth over. But from five down, Billings, who reached his hundred off 157 balls, and Stevens steadied the ship confidently, with the latter particularly positive as confidence grew.He successfully hit over the top on the off side on a couple of occasions before launching New Zealand left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, who took 1 for 119 from 15 overs on debut, for a straight six to reach a 59-ball fifty in the final over before lunch.Stevens also clipped Steve Patterson for six over midwicket shortly after lunch and hit Patel for another in the same area on the way to a 129-ball century. Not without luck, he went from 51 to 191 in an afternoon session, which yielded 204 runs in 36 overs. He offered a number of difficult chances, although on 149 offered an easy chance to Olivier off Fisher at mid-on.The majority of Stevens’ sixes came off Patel before holing out to the Kiwi, leaving Kent 385 for 6. The Stevens-Billings alliance was a Kent record sixth-wicket partnership and the highest ever for that wicket on this ground. It was also the highest partnership for any wicket in Championship cricket this season.Billings was caught in the gully off Olivier late in the day, while Fisher also struck again.

Arsenal to send scouts to watch £26m+ "superstar" in today’s fixture

After a perfect start to 2024, winning every Premier League game with relative ease so far, Arsenal have reportedly turned their attention towards summer additions, which could include a player they're set to scout this weekend.

Arsenal transfer news

Stealing the Arsenal headlines in recent months has been Ivan Toney. The Brentford striker has been at the centre of interest from the Gunners for some time now and could yet complete a summer move. Any deal will not come cheap, however, with the Bees reportedly prepared to demand as much as £80m for their star striker.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 2, 2024

Meanwhile, those at the Emirates have also been linked with a move to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Pedro Neto, who could reportedly cost a hefty fee of £60m this summer as Arsenal look to splash the cash. The two Premier League stars would certainly improve Arsenal's attacking options, there's no doubt about that, but for a combined £140m, it will be interesting to see whether the Gunners spend that kind of money in the coming months.

Brentford's Ivan Toney

It's not just Mikel Arteta's attacking options that Edu Gaspar could look to improve, either, with the club's scouts turning their attention to a new defender. According to Turkish publication Star, Arsenal are set to send scouts to watch Ferdi Kadioglu in Fenerbahce's game against Hatayspor on Saturday.

If the scouts like what they see, then we may well see the left-back in north London sooner rather than later, especially given that his price tag reportedly sits in excess of just €30m (£26m) this summer. The Turkish Super Lig, of course, recently lost Sacha Boey to Bayern Munich, as the full-back completed a move from Galatasaray. But despite such an impressive move, Kadioglu is reportedly rated higher than the new Bayern Munich man, potentially handing Arsenal an unexpected boost.

"Superstar" Kadioglu can compete with Zinchenko

Competition for places is key for any side aiming for football's highest honours, and that's exactly what Arsenal's sights are set on. The Gunners are already eyeing the likes of Toney and Neto to compete with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli, and could now land competition for Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The 27-year-old, who has struggled with calf problems at times this season, could be forced to step things up if Kadioglu arrives – particularly when considering the fact that the Turkey international has the same number of assists in the current campaign. If the move takes place, Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig will certainly feel vindicated, having predicted the "superstar" left-back's rise, posting on X:

Still just 24 years old, Kadioglu could get an Arsenal move at the perfect time. The Gunners are on the up and could yet enter this summer's transfer window as Premier League champions. As things stand, they sit just one point adrift of Manchester City and two points adrift of leaders Liverpool in a tightly contested race.

Full player list revealed for The Hundred draft

English players have been conservative in their salary demands ahead of Sunday’s inaugural draft for The Hundred, with only 19 of the 331 domestic players choosing to put down a reserve price. While many of the big overseas names in the draft have opted for a base price of £100,000 or more, meaning they will have to be picked in the first four rounds if at all, only four English players – Joe Denly, Liam Livingstone, Samit Patel and Mark Wood – have dared to enter with a reserve price as high as £60,000.Seven players – Ian Bell, Sam Billings, Morne Morkel, Liam Plunkett, Delray Rawlins, Olly Stone and Ryan ten Doeschate – have entered with a reserve price of £50,000.Eight more – Kyle Abbott, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Gareth Harte, Richard Levi, Wayne Madsen, Hamidullah Qadri, Rilee Rossouw and Hardus Viljoen – have a reserve price of £40,000, while the rest have none, meaning they could go for as little as £30,000.The vast majority of players with a county deal have put their names forward, meaning there are few notable omissions – though some red-ball specialists like Alastair Cook, Rob Yates and Nick Browne have not entered. Those without a base price that can hope to be picked up relatively early in the draft include Ravi Bopara, Liam Dawson, Cameron Delport, Lewis Gregory, Tymal Mills and Reece Topley, while the overwhelming majority of recent stars in the T20 Blast are on the full list.Several players without a county contract have entered, including recent pros Mohammad Azharullah, Richard Oliver, and Azeem Rafiq. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the overseas player list includes global T20 stars including Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Glenn Maxwell, though AB de Villiers has not registered for the competition.Harbhajan Singh was the only Indian to have initially entered the draft, but had a change of mind and wanted to focus on playing in the IPL. The BCCI made it clear to him that unless he was retired he could not be permitted to play overseas T20 leagues. Some players have moved their reserve prices since ESPNcricinfo revealed an earlier version of the overseas player list. Lungi Ngidi has removed his initial reserve price of £125,000, while Shahid Afridi has changed his down from £100,000 to £60,000.Several more overseas players have registered since then, including Mohammad Amir, Hazratullah Zazai, Umar Akmal and Avishka Fernando. In total, there are now 239 overseas players registered for the draft.
