Reforços? Base?

When Arsenal wanted to sign ‘superhuman’ Man City star who’s now worth £214m

Arsenal haven't been short of goals in recent weeks, scoring 11 in their last two Premier League outings – with Hale End Academy graduate Bukayo Saka netting four times.

Mikel Arteta's side have scored 58 times in the league so far this season – a tally only bettered by Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool who have managed 59.

It's not just the final third where the Gunners have impressed this season, but also at the back, with Arteta's side boasting the best defensive record in the league conceding 22 times in their 25 Premier League outings this season.

Despite their brilliant record at both ends of the field, Arsenal still remain second in the Premier League, just a couple of points off the summit with 13 games remaining this season.

The club are aiming to end a 20-year drought without a league title and potentially could've benefitted from the signing of a player who the club were linked with back in 2019.

Arsenal missed out on a huge talent in 2019

According to Goal, Arsenal were interested in signing striker Erling Haaland before the Norwegian eventually joined Austrian side RB Salzburg back in 2019.

The striker was a hot prospect that summer after his spell at Molde, where Haaland scored 20 times in 50 appearances for the homeland side Molde – with clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool also interested.

However, the promising attacker swapped his home country for Austria, where like in Norway he couldn't stop scoring once again which drew interest from sides all over the world.

Haaland scored 29 times in 27 appearances for Salzburg in a season where he starred in the league and in the Champions League earning him a big move to Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

The deal may have been a risk for any Premier League sides, but former Molde scout John Vik was shocked no English side took a chance on Haaland.

"Liverpool could have got him. Arsenal could have got him. Everyone was there to watch him but these clubs were seeing a No.9 who was tall and broad and, ‘Oh, he’s going to be a target man’. I couldn’t for the life of me see why they had narrowed him down that way."

Erling Haaland's stats after being linked with Arsenal

After Liverpool and Arsenal missed out on the striker, he eventually joined Manchester City from Dortmund in 2022 – taking the Premier League by storm in his first campaign in England.

Haaland scored 36 times in 35 Premier League outings – a tally that broke the record for the most goals scored in a single top-flight campaign in England . The striker has missed spells so far this season through injury, but that hasn't stopped his prolific form in front of goal.

The Norwegian has scored 16 times in his 19 league matches, a tally that sees him top the charts once again despite missing nearly six weeks of the season. That's even more than Saka this season, with the Arsenal winger bagging 12 in 24 league outings.

The "superhuman" forward has a unique play style that would benefit any side in the world, let alone Man City who romped to a treble last term courtesy of Haaland's exploits. His power, pace and finishing ability are unmatched in world football, with the former Dortmund striker now valued at a staggering £214m – as per Football Observatory.

The striker left Molde for a fee in the region of £17m – a wedge of cash that would have been a bargain to Arsenal had they taken a risk on him just four years ago. He would undoubtedly have improved the Gunners' frontline, possibly ending their lengthy drought without a Premier League crown.

Robertson starts & "immense" gem out in predicted Liverpool XI vs Norwich

Liverpool supporters may still be reeling from Jurgen Klopp's announcement that he will be stepping down from his managerial position at the Anfield helm at the end of the season, but the action continues and the Reds now await the visit of Norwich City in the FA Cup fourth round.

The Championship side defeated Bristol Rovers in the third round to earn a trip to Merseyside, and while Liverpool will be confident of advancing, the Canaries have lost just one of their past six fixtures across all competitions.

Jurgen Klopp

Nonetheless, Liverpool held off Fulham to qualify for the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea earlier this week, topped their Europa League group and are perched atop the Premier League table with a five-point advantage over second-placed Manchester City (who do have a game in hand).

With a double Premier League header forthcoming next week, Klopp might look to make some rotations for the FA Cup clash, with as many as four changes from the team that defeated the Cottagers on Wednesday night.

1 GK – Caoimhin Kelleher

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

With Chelsea visiting Anfield on Wednesday before a crucial weekend clash at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal, Alisson might find himself with a prolonged break as Caoimhin Kelleher retains his spot between the sticks on Sunday afternoon, having featured 12 times across all competitions this term.

2 RB – Conor Bradley

hayden-hackney-conor-bradley-liverpool-opinion

What an impact Conor Bradley has made since bursting onto the scene at the start of the month, impressing off the bench against Arsenal, winning Man of the Match in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg and keeping a clean sheet on his Premier League debut last weekend.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is on the cusp of a return from injury but it would be unwise to chuck him right back into the mix and Bradley will start once again.

3 CB – Jarell Quansah

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.

This time last season, Jarell Quansah was honing his craft in League One with Bristol Rovers but has been a resounding success this term, having scored once and supplied three assists from 16 senior showings for Liverpool.

Moreover, the 20-year-old titan ranks among the top 1% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for passes attempted, the top 10% for pass completion, the top 20% for successful take-ons and the top 6% for aerial wins per 90, as per FBref.

4 CB – Ibrahima Konate

Liverpool ace Ibrahima Konate.

Virgil van Dijk is an "immense" player, as was said by The Times' Henry Winter, but he started against Fulham and Ibrahima Konate will partner Quansah in the FA Cup for the second time this season.

The Frenchman is a monstrous presence at the back and while Joel Matip's season-ending injury in December was a huge blow, he has alleviated the worries with some stunning displays of late.

5 LB – Andrew Robertson

Andy Robertson.

Andrew Robertson has been sidelined since October after injuring his shoulder on international duty with Scotland, sitting on the bench against Fulham this week but not gracing the field.

The dynamic left-back is one of the best in the business and while Joe Gomez has performed absence in his absence of late, Robertson is creative and cultured and will use the Norwich contest to rekindle his fitness.

6 DM – Alexis Mac Allister

Alexis Mac Allister.

Alexis Mac Allister has been in mesmerising form since returning from a knee injury at the start of January, with The Athletic's James Pearce remarking that he was "so good" as the Reds defeated the Cherries 4-0.

With Wataru Endo still competing at the Asia Cup with Japan, the £35m summer signing will retain his spot and look to orchestrate play against second-tier opposition.

7 CM – Harvey Elliott

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott.

Harvey Elliott has been largely restricted to starting berths in cup competitions this season but, still only 20, remains one of English football's most promising young outlets.

As per FBref, the £40k-per-week ace ranks among the top 8% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for progressive passes, the top 4% for progressive carries and the top 5% for touches in the attacking box per 90, so he will certainly have a say on the effectiveness of Liverpool's attacking efforts.

8 CM – Curtis Jones

Curtis Jones.

Curtis Jones is becoming increasingly important in Liverpool's first-team and is starting to dig up goals and assists to complement his technically proficient style in the engine room.

BBC Sport analyst Raj Chohan has heralded the 22-year-old's "phenomenal" ball retention and his prowess in this regard will be crucial in nullifying the Norwich threat.

9 RW – Cody Gakpo

Liverpool's Cody Gakpo.

At right wing, Cody Gakpo will be expected to retain his spot after starring from the flank earlier this week, though he was unable to continue his four-match scoring streak in the Carabao Cup.

Gakpo also started on the right when Liverpool defeated Arsenal in the previous round and will look to latch onto Elliott's creativity behind him to enter double digits for striking this season.

10 CF – Darwin Nunez

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez bagged twice against Bournemouth in the Premier League last weekend to take his seasonal tally up to ten goals and ten assists apiece.

Still dividing opinion, with his wayward finishing marring exemplary application and creative influence to make a marked improvement on Liverpool's fluency, the Uruguayan will hope to fire himself into something of a purple patch with a big effort tomorrow.

BCB to host two T20s between Asia XI and World XI in March 2020

The two games will be part of the nationwide celebrations to commemorate the birth centenary of Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Shakib Al Hasan chats with BCB president Nazmul Hassan•Raton Gomes

The BCB will host two T20Is between an Asia XI and a World XI in March 2020, as part of the extensive nationwide celebrations to commemorate the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s founding father.BCB president Nazmul Hassan said that they are looking for the “best current cricketers” for the two sides, and expected many of their desired players to be available as only two teams are scheduled to be involved in international cricket by that time.Sheikh Mujib was born on March 17, 1920, and every year his birth anniversary is celebrated through a national holiday. Because of the birth centenary next year, the government is chalking up big plans for celebrations, which will include cricket matches.”There will be a matter of availability if they [the players] have international duties,” Hassan said. “I think only two teams will be busy at the time, but they won’t be playing T20s, so we might get their T20 players. We are looking for the best players among the current lot, and because the games will have international status, everyone will be serious about it.”Hassan said that during the ICC meeting last week, the members had unanimously allowed these two games to have international status although the regulation only allows such matches to get the international status if it involves a Full Member nation playing the game.”They made a special dispensation for Bangladesh, but they said it is only a one-off that such a match will get international status,” Hassan said. The matches will be held between March 18 and 21 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Three strikers Crystal Palace could sign to finally replace Mateta

It hasn't been a good start to the year for Crystal Palace, as they crashed out of the FA Cup in a replay against Everton just before being thoroughly beaten by a wounded Arsenal side 5-0.

What makes it worse is that the team have failed to score a single goal in those games, meaning that they are currently goalless in 2024.

The striker that started two of those three games was Jean-Philippe Mateta, and while he has had his moments for the club here and there since permanently signing from Mainz in Winter 2022, there simply haven't been enough to justify his place in the team anymore – even as a backup.

It would appear as if Roy Hodgson and Steve Parish share this sentiment as the club have been linked with several number nines this month, so let's take a look at three of them.

1

Eddie Nketiah – Arsenal

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

The first name on the list has been touted for a move to Selhurst Park multiple times this month, and for a fee in the region of £30m is Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah.

The Gunners' number 14 started out in Chelsea's Cobham academy before moving to Hale End after he was deemed surplus to requirements by the Blues.

He was sent out on loan for half a season to Leeds United in the 2019/20 season, but has otherwise spent his entire senior career at the Emirates and has become a first-team regular under Mikel Arteta.

He has a reasonably respectable haul of 38 goals and ten assists for the north Londoners in 159 games, giving him a goal involvement every 3.31 games across his entire career.

However, he has scored some big goals for the Gunners, including two away to Chelsea and a last-minute winner against Manchester United last season.

While he might have some doubters, he would represent a massive upgrade on Mateta, and the pair's underlying numbers say as much.

The English "monster", as described by The Athletic's Aaron Catterson-Reid, has the Frenchman beat in every single relevant metric, and in the case of things such as non-penalty goals per 90 and goals per shot on target, it is by a landslide.

Ultimately, there is clearly some talent there, and if Arsenal opt to sell him this month, the Eagles should do their best to sign him.

2

Armando Broja – Chelsea

Armando Broja

From a striker in north London to one in west London, Chelsea's Armando Broja has been a player touted for a move to Palace multiple times this month, and while he has been priced at around £35m by the Blues, a loan with an obligation to buy has also reportedly been floated.

Unlike Nketiah, the 22-year-old Albania international has had fewer first-team opportunities since making his debut for the Blues. However, this can be attributed to his age, injury history and the fact that he has spent an entire season on loan with Southampton.

It was on this loan spell that he first caught the attention of the wider footballing public, as his performances for the Saints were consistently strong and occasionally superb. He ended the spell with nine goals and one assist to his name in 38 appearances, and while these aren't world-class numbers, they do represent a goal involvement every 3.8 games, which is a better ratio than Mateta has delivered in south London.

During this loan spell, football talent scout Jacek Kulig described the Slough-born striker as a "complete forward" as well as "athletic and powerful", and when looking back at his highlight reel from that season, it is hard to disagree.

Last but not least, if you are still unconvinced, look at his underlying numbers compared to Mateta's, as the Frenchman is completely outclassed in every metric bar progressive passes, where he is tied with his potential competition.

3

Borja Mayoral – Getafe

The last player on this list takes us away from the Premier League and into Spain, Madrid to be specific, as Getafe's Borja Mayoral was touted for a move to Selhurst Park earlier this month, and while the other sides he has been linked to such as Arsenal might have more money to spend, this is a player well worth fighting for.

The 26-year-old Spaniard has been tearing it up in his home country this season, and as things stand, only Girona's Artem Dovbyk and Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham have scored more than his 13 league goals.

Those 13 goals have come in just 19 starts, and he has added one assist for good measure as well.

Described as a "poacher" by data analyst Ben Mattinson, the former Roma ace could be exactly what the Eagles need this season to pull themselves away from an impending relegation scrap, as their current goal tally of 22 is the third-worst in the entire league.

Sealing the deal could cost as much as £39m, but with the consequences of relegation being so much dearer, this seems like an opportunity too good to miss.

Jofra Archer involved in another tie as he gears up for Ashes call

Imran Tahir six in the final over helps Surrey scramble to level the scores off the last ball

ECB Reporters Network26-Jul-2019Twelve days after his heroics in the World Cup final, Jofra Archer made a highly impressive return to action with two wickets as Sussex Sharks tied with Surrey in a Vitality Blast thriller at Hove. The 24-year-old showed no ill effects from the side injury which troubled him throughout the World Cup during four hostile overs, bowled in three spells at a cost of 21 runs, during which he picked up the wickets of Aaron Finch and Surrey’s top scorer Ollie Pope, who was dropped on 16, for 43.Fifteen days after removing him for a golden duck in the World Cup semi-final, Archer had Finch well caught on the square-leg boundary by Delray Rawlins. He returned in the 14th over with a superbly disguised slower ball to dismiss Pope, who had just hit four boundaries in an over off Danny Briggs and appeared to be guiding Surrey to victory.Archer had bowled in the nets under the supervision of England’s medical staff earlier in the day and could now be in the Ashes squad when it is named on Saturday.A 6000 sell-out crowd had given Archer a standing ovation when he went out to bat earlier in the evening and they were treated to a thrilling finale. Surrey looked favourites with 29 needed off the last five overs with five wickets in hand but Tymal Mills dragged Sussex back into contention when two searing yorkers accounted for Tom Curran and Ryan Patel in the 18th over. Then off the final ball of the 19th Rikki Clarke holed out to long-on leaving ninth-wicket pair Gareth Batty and Imran Tahir with the task of scoring 12 from the last over from David Wiese, who was bowling his only over of the night.Wiese conceded singles off the first two balls then Tahir stylishly uppercut a full toss for six. One run came off the next two deliveries, leaving Batty to score three to win off the final ball. He drove to long-on and the pair scrambled back for a second after Sussex missed with two throws at the stumps, either of which would have run him out had they been on target.Earlier, Sussex had finished on 144 for 8 which was something of a disappointment after skipper Luke Wright and Phil Salt had smashed 50 in the first four overs.Salt, dropped by Curran off his second ball when on nought, hit 27 off ten balls including successive sixes off Jade Dernbach. But the Sharks were never the same when he holed out later in the same over and it needed an unbeaten 76 from skipper Wright to get them to a competitive total.Sussex only managed six boundaries after the sixth over with Wright unable to go onto the offensive because wickets were falling too regularly at the other end. Veteran offspinner Batty had figures of 3 for 8 at one stage while only Ben Brown got into double figures. Wright hit 14 off Jordan Clarke in the 18th over and finished with 76 off 59 balls including a six and nine fours.

Jofra Archer Ashes debut delayed as he continues injury comeback

Jofra Archer’s hotly anticipated Test debut will be deferred at least until the second Test at Lord’s, after he was omitted from the first Test against Australia at Edgbaston on Thursday to continue his rehabilitation from a side strain.Though Archer was named in the 14-man squad for Edgbaston, he was always a long shot for selection, after admitting he had played through “excruciating” pain in helping England to win the World Cup with a haul of 20 wickets at 23.05, before sending down the decisive Super Over in the final against New Zealand at Lord’s.”Jofra is coming back from quite a serious injury,” said England’s captain, Joe Root. “We looked at conditions and made a decision on what we thought would best take 20 wickets here. It also gives him time to get absolutely ready and fit to make sure he has his workloads up and ready to go for later in the series if he needs to make an impact. [His fitness] will be monitored throughout the week. It’s important that he’s ready to go to offer something different.”Archer made his playing comeback in a T20 for Sussex last week, having had a brief break in his native Barbados to recover from the rigours of the World Cup. And to judge by England’s struggles in their Test against Ireland, several of his team-mates might have benefitted from similar down-time.Root, however, was adamant that an Ashes campaign was every bit as important as the tournament already gone.”I think if you speak to anyone who has captained England and is on the verge of an Ashes series, to say it doesn’t mean as much as anyother event, I don’t think any of them would agree,” he said. “It’s huge. It’s a great opportunity. Cricket in this country is probably at an all-timehigh, it’s got interest it probably hasn’t had for a long time and we’ve got an opportunity as a team to make this summer a very memorable one. That’s exciting, to be involved and have that carrot in front of us is a great motivator for the whole squad.”In Archer’s absence, England’s attack will be spearheaded by the old guard of Stuart Broad and James Anderson, whose record-breaking partnership was broken up briefly for last week’s Ireland Test. Though Broad starred with four second-innings wickets as Ireland were bowled out for 38, Anderson missed the match to continue his recovery from a calf injury. And, even though Anderson turned 37 on Tuesday, Root remains in no doubt about his enduring value to England’s Test team, as he looks to build on his record tally of 575 wickets in what will be his eighth Ashes series.”He’s still someone that genuinely continues to improve,” he said. “You just have to look at his numbers these last few years. Conditions have suited him but he’s absolutely made the most of it. He probably had his best tour of Australia in the recent past, he continues to find ways of taking wickets and building pressure on any given surface, he continues to be a great leader of our attack. At 37, to keep improving is a great trait to have, great for English cricket.”Root confirmed England’s XI for the Edgbaston Test on the eve of the match, but insisted that Archer would have a part to play in the series.”I wouldn’t have named it if I wasn’t confident. We are very excited as a group,” Root said. “We have a good record here as a team. It’s very important that we are very focused and very clear on how we want to approach this series and that first day in particular. We feel confident this group of players is more than capable of winning this Test match.

Harry Kane admits trophy failure with Bayern Munich gives him 'real hunger' to fire England to Euro 2024 glory

Harry Kane admits that trophy failure at Bayern Munich has given him “real hunger” to fire England to Euro 2024 glory and break his silverware duck.

Scored 44 goals after moving to GermanyFailed to land major silverwareChasing down continental crown with Three LionsWHAT HAPPENED?

The prolific frontman severed career-long ties with Premier League side Tottenham in the summer of 2023 in a bid to land elusive major honours. He did his best to keep Bayern on the trophy trail, hitting 44 goals in his debut campaign, but ended the 2023-24 campaign empty-handed.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT KANE SAID

Kane has now linked up with England, as captain of his country, and has said of the determination burning inside him to land a continental crown with the Three Lions – with his last trophy bid brought to a close by Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals: “Whenever you have a tough loss or go out in a competition like that, for sure, there is a real hunger and desire that burns inside to make sure that the next time you get there or the next big competition, you have a different outcome. That’s the way I always look at it. There is always a chance to get better and to improve. Leaving that game away in Madrid, of course it hurt for a while, but then you move on, you come away with the boys and your motivation is now onto the next one. For sure, there is a real hunger for that.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane’s exploits for Bayern landed him the European Golden Shoe and the 30-year-old has said of taking his game to even greater heights: “From an outside point of view, I'm probably respected more as one of the top strikers in the world. When you're at a club like Bayern Munich, that comes if you have a great season – similar to Real Madrid, Barcelona and all the top, top clubs around the world. So from that point of view, maybe I have a different kind of aura. But personally, nothing's really changed in how I prepare, how I go into games, my confidence is still the same as what it was throughout my whole career.

"So maybe from a media point of view or an outside point of view, you get looked at in a different light. Which is good for me, because it raises my profile and helps me to really compete to be one of the best players in the world. So that's probably the biggest difference I've found. I don't know if it's made me a better player or not, it's hard to say. If I had stayed in the Premier League for another year, would I have improved more or less? I'm not quite sure. Playing against different teams with different tactics has helped me.”

There had been talk of Kane cutting his spell in Germany short, having failed to savour the tangible success he craves, but he will be back for more in Munich next season as he remains under contract until 2027. Before that, one of the finest No.9s on the planet has the chance to cement his legacy as a national hero with England – with a record-setting haul of goals for the Three Lions already taken to 63.

The Aston Villa starlet who could be their best prospect since Grealish

Aston Villa have been immense this campaign, as highlighted by their current fourth-place spot in the Premier League.

However, this week they suffered a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to Chelsea, which dumped them out of the FA Cup.

The midfield arguably lost them the tie, but there was a glimmer of quality towards the end of the game via one substitute, whom Unai Emery could look to fully unleash soon.

The rise of Jack Grealish

Having been at his boyhood club since the age of six, Jack Grealish made his Premier League debut for Villa away to Manchester City on 7 May, 2014, in what was just the start of him becoming a Villans legend.

The winger would go on to mainly take on the role of a substitute in the next two seasons, during a time when the club struggled on the field and eventually succumbed to relegation.

However, this is where Grealish developed into the player he is today, taking on the captain's armband and leading the club he supports to the Premier League in 2019.

Grealish contributed to 65 goals over 213 games for Villa, with his best campaign coming in the 2020/21 Premier League season, when he scored six times and registered ten assists. This earned him a move to Man City for £100m, which is the second-most expensive signing in Premier League history.

The 28-year-old has gone on to become a key player for Pep Guardiola's side, helping them win the treble last season while also becoming a regular for England.

Perhaps, Emery could have the biggest prospect since Grealish waiting in the wings…

Tim Iroegbunam's future at Villa

Despite being handed his first Premier League start in the 2021/22 season by Steven Gerrard and impressing, Tim Iroegbunam was sent on loan to QPR last season, where he took on a key role, playing 32 games and helping the side avoid relegation to League One.

Former QPR loanee Tim Iroegbunam.

This season, he has played 41 minutes under Emery, which has occurred in Villa's last two matches. The 6 foot midfielder can play as a number eight or as a defensive midfielder, and his stats from his time at the Hoops show what type of player he is.

The England gem played a handful of roles in the Championship, for a side that often spent long spells without the ball, which prevented most of his on-the-ball qualities from shining, but he still showed his ability to carry the ball with ease.

However, that did allow him to show his ability to hold his own, especially out of possession, as he ranked highly for tackles won and passes blocked, showing his reading of the game is superb.

It is no surprise that analyst and writer PGR described Iroengbunam as the "real deal," and his profile would be the perfect replacement for Douglas Luiz, who has been tipped with a move away from the club, with Arsenal being a potential destination.

The likeness between the pair can be seen in their shared defensive prowess, with Luiz averaging 2.7 tackles and interceptions per game this season in the Premier League, while his young teammate averaged 2.8 for that same metric in the second tier in 2022/23.

Whether the Brazilian leaves in the summer or not, the youngster deserves a chance to shine.
