A year ago, Manchester United were busy in the transfer window, striking three loan deals to fill out Erik ten Hag's squad. Striker Wout Weghorst joined from Burnley, midfielder Marcel Sabitzer came in from Bayern Munich and Jack Butland moved north from Crystal Palace.
In 2023, United were acting from a position of strength as they battled for a Premier League top-four place, but this year, they're in danger of missing out on European football altogether as they languish in seventh.
It remains to be seen to what extent players returning from injury can solve United's problems – centre-back Lisandro Martinez played his first game since mid-September as a substitute in the 2-2 draw with Spurs last time out, while midfielder Casemiro also returned to the bench in that fixture. In addition, centre-backs Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof could be back available for the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Newport County.
Ten Hag hasn't been furnished with any external reinforcements just yet, but it seems there could be some significant activity before the month is out.
"Huge" Man Utd deal teased
According to Football Insider, which shared some Man Utd transfer news, the Red Devils could strike a "huge" big-money deal before the end of the month. One or two loan moves are more likely, but depending on departures, there may be room for a more high-profile addition. With United reliant on shifting further players, it's likely that any "marquee" permanent signing would be "last-gasp" – and centre-back will be the primary area of focus.
Sergio Reguilon
The report notes that United have trimmed their wage bill already by sending Jadon Sancho on loan to Borussia Dortmund, with the Bundesliga club set to cover 40% of his £250k-per-week salary. Hannibal Mejbri and Facundo Pellistri's temporary moves to Sevilla and Granada respectively have freed up extra funds, too.
United should focus on striker instead
United's defensive record this season isn't where Ten Hag would want it to be. They've conceded 29 goals in their 21 matches, and while that's the sixth-lowest amount in the division, it's still an excessive average of 1.38 per match. The Red Devils have actually been let off the hook by wasteful finishing at times as well, with their opponents amassing 33.7 expected goals up to this point (the eight-highest in the league).
From that standpoint, you can see why he might want a new centre-back, but Ten Hag should also recognise the extent of the upheaval in that department. Even before Christmas, he used ten different partnerships at the heart of defence in the midst of repeated injuries, but things should settle down now with Martinez back and Maguire and Lindelof both closing in on returns.
There's a strong argument, then, that Ten Hag should place faith in his fit-again defenders to shore United up, and instead address their glaring issues at the other end. They urgently need to take the load off Rasmus Hojlund, who's only scored two Premier League goals so far, and inject some life into an attack that's scored fewer goals (24) than five teams in the bottom half.
With pitches for the T20Is against Pakistan women likely to favour batsmen, South Africa captain Sune Luus expects the bowling unit to step up again

South Africa’s stand-in captain, Sune Luus, has called her bowling attack “the best in the world” and backed them to make a dent in Pakistan’s line-up in the five upcoming Twenty20 Internationals between the two sides. After sharing the spoils in a one-day series that ended 1-1, with the third match tied, South Africa and Pakistan meet in the first T20I in Pretoria on Wednesday, and Luus expected conditions to favour batting.”At this time of the year, the pitches in South Africa play mostly the same,” Luus said. “The three pitches we played on [in the ODIs] were kind of the same. They’re just flat wickets. I think we expect the same here. It’s going to be a good contest for the batsmen to showcase their talent.”It’s still going to be a bit tough for our pace bowlers, but we know how great they are,” she added. “They’re the best bowling attack in the world. The way they’ve stepped up so far has been really good.”South Africa have two bowlers – Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail – ranked among the top 10 ODI bowlers in the world, with Ismail also ranked joint fifth in T20Is. Four of the top five wicket-takers in the ODI series were also part of the home side, and Ismail backed the bowling unit to carry their form into the T20s.”It’s a mindset for us,” Ismail said. “I always say it’s 80% mental and 20% skill. So for me it’s about going out there and quickly getting the change up between the fifty over and the T20s. We love the adrenaline. The girls love the T20 format much more than the ODI stuff.”I don’t want to say too much and give out our secrets, but we’ll go out there and work a lot on our variations,” Ismail added. “The batters are going to come after us. They always say it’s a batter’s game, but we bowlers never believe that. We have to go out there and use our variations, and think cricket.”Luus admitted that the tied ODI series was “not ideal”, but insisted that her batting unit had regained any confidence they lost after being bowled out for 63 in the opening match. “A positive we can take out of the three games is the way our batters came back in the second and third ODIs. That was brilliant to see, and all of the batters have huge confidence going into the T20s.”The upcoming series marks the latest phase of preparation for next year’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia, with South Africa keen to begin putting their plans in place for the global showpiece. The tournament is just over ten months away, and South Africa are aiming to use the series as a platform to evaluate different variations against a plucky Pakistan side – ranked seventh to the Proteas women’s sixth place in T20 cricket.”It’s still a bit difficult with injuries, and having to leave Dane van Niekerk out of the side, but we want to get that winning formula and combinations,” Luus explained. “Going into these five T20s, it’s a good opportunity for us to experiment and to see more or less what the batting line-up will be like and who will bowl where. The World Cup is still a long way away and anything can happen between now and then.”It’s a good opportunity for the girls to showcase their talent and put their hand up for the selectors to say that ‘We are here and we are ready for the World Cup’.”
Three successive defeats in all competitions have plunged Arsenal into something of a mini-crisis heading into this much-needed winter break, with any lingering hopes of securing the title perhaps resting on whether or not the north Londoners are able to secure a top-class striker before the window slams shut in just a few weeks' time.
As chances were repeatedly spurned in an infuriating outing against rivals Liverpool in the FA Cup last week, club legend Ian Wright summed it up best by stating that his former side "need a killer" – someone who can bury that myriad of glaring opportunities.
Finding such a ruthless option in the January market is no small feat, however, with the price tag for a certain Ivan Toney likely to have crept up and up as the Gunners' forward line failed to finish their dinner in that 2-0 defeat to Jurgen Klopp's men.
At present, it is believed that the club's leading target is likely to cost more than £100m if Brentford are to sanction a sale, with Chelsea also said to be in the picture amid their own woes in attack, having seen Nicolas Jackson depart for AFCON.
While it is a big if, if Arsenal can edge out the Blues and seal a deal for Toney this month it could perhaps turn the title tide back in their favour, with Mikel Arteta seemingly able to find the missing piece of the jigsaw that he so desperately craves.
Should a move for the Englishman be wrapped up in the near future, here's a look at how the Gunners could line up following the close of the January window…
1 GK – David Raya
The jury is out on whether Arteta actually needed to upset the apple cart by usurping Aaron Ramsdale's position as first-choice goalkeeper, yet despite Raya having made two errors leading to goals this season in the Premier League, it looks as if Toney's former Bees colleague will continue to feature in the sticks – having started 15 of the last 16 league games.
2 RB – Ben White
Takehiro Tomiyasu may be a worthy rival at right-back, although it is Ben White who remains Arteta's favoured pick in that defensive-minded berth, having missed just one league game all season.
The former Brighton and Hove Albion man is seemingly viewed as a crucial figure by his manager, although needs to improve in an attacking sense, after registering just one goal and one assist in all competitions this term.
3 CB – William Saliba
What is there really to say?
Described as "exceptional" by his manager amid his fine displays over the last 18 months or so, the Frenchman is integral to all that is good about the Gunners at the heart of the backline.
4 CB – Gabriel
Despite being linked with an exit over the summer, Gabriel has continued to remain the go-to guy alongside the man above, notably getting on the scoresheet in the recent 1-1 draw at Anfield – doing what those in the forward line cannot at present.
5 LB – Jurrien Timber
ousmane-diomande-jurrien-timber-arsenal-opinion
The sight of Jurrien Timber in training in recent days has sparked hope that a return could be on the cards for the Dutchman, with the summer signing still yet to feature since suffering a cruel ACL blow on his league debut back in August.
His impending availability will certainly offer a real boost amid Oleksandr Zinchenko's recent woes, with the Ukrainian international – who has been described as a "liability" by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville – having even been ousted by usual centre-back Jakub Kiwior of late.
6 CDM – Thomas Partey
Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey.
As Arteta has himself admitted, the loss of both Timber and Thomas Partey to injury has been a "huge blow" to the Gunners' season, hence the lift that the Ghanaian could provide amid reports that he is nearing a return.
Having the Atletico Madrid man back in the fold could offer some great stability at the base of the midfield, thus allowing Declan Rice to push into a more advanced number eight berth alongside him.
7 CM – Declan Rice
adam-wharton-declan-rice-tottenham-opinion
While the Kai Havertz experiment has shown signs of life in recent weeks and months – the German now having four league goals to his name this season – it would be wise to return to a more conventional midfield unit, with Rice taking on the Granit Xhaka role on the left-hand side.
Although not typically deployed as an eight during his time at West Ham United, the England star has that knack for being able to surge forward from deep effectively – notably ranking in the top 20% among his European peers for progressive carries per 90 – with that trait able to be utilised far more frequently in a more attacking berth.
8 CM – Martin Odegaard
Martin Odegaard
That tactical switch could then free up Martin Odegaard to run riot in the final third, with the majestic skipper having scored just four goals and provided only four assists this term in the league, after previously racking up 23 goal involvements in the top-flight in 2022/23.
9 RW – Bukayo Saka
johan-bakayoko-bukayo-saka-tottenham-opinion
It may pain Arsenal supporters to admit, yet Bakayo Saka has been as culpable as any of his teammates of late, having scored just one goal in his last six league outings – that solitary strike coming in the recent shock defeat away to Fulham.
That said, at his best the 22-year-old – who bagged 14 goals and 11 assists last term in the league – is a true genius, with the addition of a figure like Toney potentially set to help ease the goalscoring burden on his young shoulders.
10 ST – Ivan Toney
Brentford striker Ivan Toney.
Speaking of the one-time Newcastle United man, Toney has been out of action all season after serving a suspension related to betting charges, yet there is no doubt he'll be raring to go if a move to the Emirates is to occur in the coming weeks.
Having bagged 32 Premier League goals across the previous two seasons – including netting 20 times last term – the 27-year-old could be the 'killer' that is needed, having even been described as a "modern-era Ian Wright" by pundit Jermaine Pennant.
Yes, the Gunners could wait until the summer, but cannot they afford to be patient when the need for a striker is so glaringly obvious?

Kane turns joker at O2 Arena with TOCA SocialWinds up fans with practical jokesStriker set to captain England at Euro 2024WHAT HAPPENED?
England and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has shown off his lighter side after teaming up with comedian Josh Weller and TOCA Social to prank customers at a football experience based at London's O2 Arena. Kane became the "impractical joker" at a remote location in Munich as he directed Weller in a series of pranks that saw drinks orders go awry, dismal shots on goal followed by wild celebrations and general chaos reign before Kane's behind-the-scenes role was finally revealed.

Kane was under no illusions at all that the duo's pranks were likely to cause chaos as he primed his co-conspirator Weller before they got started.
Kane: "Josh, are you ready for prank one?"
Weller: "Alright, let's go and get punched in the face."
Kane. "Hopefully it won't be that bad. Let's get this started, let's wind some people up."

Kane won the European Golden Shoe for the first time in his career this season. The striker scored 36 times for Bayern to top the list ahead of Serhou Guirassy, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
Asif Ali made 51, 52, 17 and 22 and he made his way into Pakistan’s World Cup squad. These 142 runs came in four games against the top-ranked side in ODI cricket at their home. They came at a strike rate of 131.48.Despite not having anyone with anywhere near that strike rate, he didn’t make the original World Cup squad. Once he made it, with runs and form behind him, Pakistan didn’t pick him for their opening tournament game against West Indies despite not having anyone else for a position which would otherwise be crucial to finishing off the big starts their top order was giving them.In their second game against England they brought Asif Ali in and dropped Imad Wasim. Against England in the ODI series just before this game, Imad had taken six wickets and, in a very high-scoring series, conceded 6.37 runs per over. They also brought in Shoaib Malik who, at that time, was averaging 14 with the bat in England over his career. They wanted his experience and calm on the field. They dropped Haris Sohail who is considered by the Pakistan management to be the second-best batsman in the squad behind Babar Azam.Shoaib Malik has been under-par with the bat so far•Getty Images
Then they took on Sri Lanka and, fortunately for their selection group, the game got rained off and they didn’t have to pick an XI.Australia next, at Taunton, and the pitch looked green and friendly for fast bowlers. They brought in Shaheen Afridi to bolster their pace attack and dropped Shadab Khan. The latter is their best ODI player and absolutely essential to their bowling attack. They thought they’d be fine getting ten overs from Malik and Mohammad Hafeez. They went 11-0-86-1.Shadab is also their best fielder, the one who sets the tone as much as he can in what is now the worst fielding side in the tournament. Pakistan dropped two catches – one as a direct result of Shadab not being where he would usually be – and were generally abysmal in the field.WATCH on Hotstar (India only) – Fakhar Zaman’s half-centuryWATCH on Hotstar (US only) – Match highlightsAgainst India, Pakistan put Shadab back in the XI and also Imad, dropping Asif and Shaheen. They kept Malik in the side, despite his last three scores reading 4, 8 and 0. Experience, they reasoned, they needed his experience. He was out first ball.Pakistan have made six changes over three games after their opening match. None of them have been injury induced. They have argued the reasons for each change, but whether they are tactical or strategic, it’s clear that they have little idea what their best XI is. Five games into this tournament.Asked about the decision to drop a specialist bowler and batsman on Sunday, Sarfaraz Ahmed insisted it was the right move. “I think it was right. We were going with five bowlers and six batters. So I think our decision was right.” Similarly he had defended the decision to drop Shadab against Australia.Imad, who’s been at the receiving end of these decisions, was suitably diplomatic when asked whether Pakistan knew what their best XI was. “I can’t give an answer to this. Only the captain and the coach can. Whatever XI we put on the field, the players try and do their best.”That isn’t a surprise given that they weren’t all that sure about what their best XV for this World Cup should be. They picked Abid Ali on the basis of two innings in their provisional World Cup squad. Then, having allowed him just one game in the series just before this World Cup, they dropped him.Mohammad Amir was always going to be a part of their plan, even if he wasn’t in the provisional squad but Wahab Riaz had not played an ODI in two years when he was suddenly pulled into the squad. He was nowhere on the scene or in their plans and yet here he is, one of their more successful players. Mohammad Hasnain, picked for his youth and pace, has not played a single game yet and is unlikely to until Pakistan are definitely out. There will be almost certainly be changes for the next game against South Africa too. This is a tournament which they have been building up to for the best part of two years, for which they have actually had a very good run-in, for which they actually have a good, young core of players to work with.”We need to win our next four matches now, we need to play well,” Imad said. “Other results are not in our hands but we need to win those four games.”For that, they will need to first figure out what their best XI actually is.
Despite leaving it late, Nottingham Forest have stolen the headlines yet again in the late stages of the window with the arrival of Giovanni Reyna from Borussia Dortmund. And, now, things could be about to get even better for the fans at the City Ground.
Nottingham Forest transfer news
After arriving on loan, Reyna expressed his delight about the move, telling Forest's YouTube channel: "A big part of me coming here was the coaching staff and Nuno. I know a lot about the team with a lot of very talented young players. It felt like the perfect decision for me.
“I’m really excited to be here. The club and the team is a really good opportunity for me, so I’m just really happy to be here and can’t wait to get started. I’m so excited. I know the history of the club and the experience you get of playing in this stadium. I’m looking forward to Sunday against Bournemouth and then Wednesday against Bristol City. I’m looking forward to both games and am ready to go.”
Meanwhile, Forest also welcomed young forward Rodrigo Ribeiro from Sporting Club, further adding to Nuno Espirito Santo's offensive options.
They're not done there, either, it seems. According to Fabrizio Romano, Nottingham Forest have submitted an official bid to sign Chuba Akpom on loan with an option to buy of €16m (£14m) from Ajax. The buy option will reportedly become an obligation if Forest avoid relegation from the Premier League this season. Having previously starred for Middlesborough in the Championship, Akpom could finally get his Premier League chance at Nottingham Forest before the deadline.
"Strong" Akpom deserves Premier League chance again
Having previously failed to cement himself in the Premier League as a young Arsenal player, Akpom has more than earned a second chance at England's top flight, especially after his resurgent form at Ajax this season. The forward has bounced back from initial struggles to score nine goals in 20 appearances, and Akpom's stats last season show he can get even better in English football.

That said, it comes as no surprise that Boro boss Michael Carrick was full of praise for his forward last season, saying via The Northern Echo: "He's a strong boy Chubs, when he squeezed me it caught me off guard. I just love to see the lads fulfilling what they're capable of and their potential.
"Winning football matches is fantastic and seeing goals go in is brilliant but seeing them play with a smile and enjoying themselves and actually understanding how good they can be gives me great satisfaction. I'm delighted for him. He's going through that patch where he believes he will score and he could have scored more so he's probably a bit disappointed."
The news that Jürgen Klopp is set to leave his position as Liverpool manager at the end of the season shook the Premier League,
However, he still has a job on his hands to end his time at Anfield on a high, with the Europa League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Premier League trophy still up for grabs in a potential quadruple.
One thing that stands in Liverpool's way of extending their lead at the top of the table is a clash with Arsenal this weekend, as the Reds are set to travel to the Emirates Stadium for a 4.30pm kick-off on Sunday.
With that in mind, Football FanCast has outlined everything you need to know about what has gone on in the past when Jürgen Klopp and Arsenal have come head-to-head.

Interestingly, Arsenal are a team that Jürgen Klopp has seen plenty of. In fact, he's faced them the second-most times of any team in his managerial career – just behind Bayern Munich – having also come up against the Gunners during his time at Borussia Dortmund.
The German has come out on top 14 times, with seven draws and seven losses to go with it (as per Transfermarkt), handing Klopp a 50% win rate. Interestingly, he only won two out of six clashes when facing Arsene Wenger's Arsenal in the Champions League, with Klopp not tasting defeat to the north Londoners at Liverpool until July 2020.

Since being appointed back in 2015, Klopp has enjoyed a rather dominant time of things when it comes to Arsenal.
The Reds have been free-scoring in the final third, with a whopping 54 goals and just 28 goals conceded in 22 matches. That's almost three goals scored per game against Arsenal.
In fact, Liverpool scored at least three in eight of his first nine clashes against Arsenal as the Reds boss, which include a seven-goal thriller at the Emirates back in 2016 and a 5-5 EFL Cup draw at Anfield in 2019.

The German has managed against Arsenal 16 times in the Premier League at Liverpool, and the record looks very good once again, with just two losses, five draws and nine wins.
One of those losses, however, was the Reds' 3-2 defeat in October 2022, when Mikel Arteta's side recorded their first victory over Liverpool in front of their supporters for the first time since the 2014/15 campaign, while the Spaniard was still playing for the Gunners.
Liverpool have now gone three league games without victory against Arsenal – so is the tide turning just as Klopp says goodbye?

Klopp's record in cup competitions is slightly more mixed but positive nonetheless.
The match that really stands out is the 5-5 clash that took place at Anfield in the EFL Cup back in 2019, as Divock Origi scored a 94th-minute equaliser which led to Liverpool securing a 5-4 penalty win in the round of 16.
Arsenal had got their own back of sorts with shootout victories in the 2020/21 Community Shield and EFL Cup, but January's FA Cup success sees Klopp and Liverpool have the upper hand in knockout scenarios.

Of course, Jürgen Klopp's time at Borussia Dortmund was what really threw him into the limelight, with his passion and celebrations after games, as well as the exciting attacking football the men in yellow were playing on the field.
And, believe it or not, the German encountered Arsenal on six occasions during his seven years in Germany, with Dortmund drawn in the same group as the Gunners on three occasions between 2011/12 and 2014/15.
It was Arsenal who had the upper hand in Europe, though, with three victories in six. However, Klopp's men finished above Wenger's side in two of those three seasons, with the north Londoners still making it through the groups each time.
Jürgen Klopp's biggest win vs Arsenal
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
We have to go all the way back to 29th December 2018 for Jürgen Klopp's biggest win over Arsenal.
The Reds embarrassed the Gunners 5-1 at Anfield in the Premier League, with a goal from Mohamed Salah and a hat-trick from Roberto Firmino all in the first half, condemning Unai Emery's men – who had taken the lead through Ainsley Maitland-Niles – to an embarrassing defeat.

In the 27 games Klopp has faced Arsenal, his biggest loss is certainly nothing to be embarrassed about. Indeed, it's the only time he's been beaten by two clear goals against the Gunners.
It came towards the end of his time at Borussia Dortmund in the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League as Arsenal snapped the German club's unbeaten streak in the group stages, with a superb Alexis Sanchez strike sealing the victory after Yaya Sanogo scored his only goal for the club.
Dortmund would win this particular Champions League group on goal difference, having beaten the Gunners 2-0 in Germany on matchday one.
Memorable Jürgen Klopp incidents vs Arsenal
One of the most iconic incidents came recently in a clash between Arsenal and Liverpool at Anfield, as Bukayo Saka collided with Kostas Tsimikas by the dugouts, which led to the Greece international having his manager fall on top of him.
This wasn't taken lightly by Klopp, who was left seething after the incident, with the defender having to be taken off with a broken collarbone.
There seems to be a bit of extra tension in the air whenever Liverpool and Arsenal collide, as back in November 2021, Mikel Arteta and Klopp had to be separated by several members of staff after an altercation broke out, with verbal blows being exchanged.
The veteran winger provided the key moment of quality in an otherwise drab contest
Angel Di Maria grabbed the decisive goal in a drab contest, as Argentina snagged a 1-0 win over Ecuador with Lionel Messi not in the starting lineup.
The Albiceleste were short of their best, dragged into a chippy contest as Messi watched the first hour from the bench. And although the Inter Miami star eventually entered the fray, this game was won by a moment from another one of Lionel Scaloni's veterans.
Lisandro Martinez had Argentina's best chance early on, forcing a clever stop from Hernan Galindez. The Albiceleste took the lead after 40 minutes, with Di Maria starting a well-crafted move before finishing it with a toe-poke from a tight angle.
Scaloni's side offered admittedly little else for the rest of the game. Messi's introduction inside an hour gave them an extra spark in possession, but not much material to show for it. In the end, their defensive acumen was enough, Ecuador left without a shot on target, while the reigning World Cup champions strolled through a forgettable fixture.
GOAL rates Argentina's players from Soldier Field…
GettyGoalkeeper & Defence
Emi Martinez (7/10):
Relatively untroubled throughout, his only job was to judge a few crosses. Didn't have a save to make.
Gonzalo Montiel (6/10):
Held his position defensively, and rarely ventured forward. His main job was to cover for Di Maria.
Cristian Romero (7/10):
Assisted Di Maria's opener. Put in a few typically ferocious tackles – some of which really should have been called for fouls.
Lisandro Martinez (6/10):
Had a good effort in the first half denied. Reliable at the back after an injury-stunted season with Man United.
Marcos Acuna (6/10):
Got forward a bit, but didn't create many chances from wide areas.

Leandro Paredes (7/10):
Received it, moved it, and kept play ticking in an otherwise stop-start game.
Rodrigo De Paul (7/10):
Got stuck in, but spent a lot of his time throwing himself on the ground. Does the dirty work every time.
Giovani Lo Celso (6/10):
Didn't offer his usual creativity from the middle, and spent periods as a spectator.

Julian Alvarez (6/10):
Willing to make runs in behind the defence, and linked play effectively at times. Doesn't get credit for the stuff he does without the ball.
Lautaro Martinez (5/10):
Nonexistent throughout. Managed 21 touches and put one glorious chance right at the goalie.
Angel Di Maria (8/10):
Sloppy for about 10 minutes, before coming alive. Took his goal wonderfully, hit the bar with a free-kick soon after. An excellent hour of work, all said.

Lionel Messi (6/10):
A few nice touches. Should have ended the game with an assist had his teammates been more clincial.
Enzo Fernandez (5/10):
Gifted a golden opportunity to make it 2-0, but elected to pass. Otherwise uninvolved.
Nico Gonzalez (N/A):
No time to make an impact.
Angel Correa (N/A):
No time to make an impact.
Lionel Scaloni (7/10):
Left out Messi from the start, but fielded an otherwise near-full-strength side. Argentina were dragged into a scrappy game, but still managed to win. A solid evening's work.
