Man Utd’s £26m-rated January target could be as "frustrating" as Antony

For Manchester United, the hope will be that a new year can bring with it better fortunes, having ended 2023 in limp fashion with a dire 2-1 loss away to Nottingham Forest.

From the highs of reaching two cup finals last season and returning to the Champions League following a third-place finish in the Premier League, the Red Devils now find themselves languishing firmly outside the top four, having also suffered early exits in both the Carabao Cup and in Europe.

In a notable case of second season syndrome, Erik ten Hag has failed to kick on from the early 'success' achieved in 2022/23, with questions rightly being asked regarding his long-term future in the dugout – amid the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co.

Reporter claims Man Utd may "take a chance" on 44 y/o boss at Old Trafford

He’s already masterminded two victories over Erik ten Hag.

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 24, 2023

As the recent defeat at the City Ground exposed, one clear issue for the Old Trafford outfit this term has been their woes in front of goal, with only Burnley and Sheffield United having scored fewer goals across the entire division.

While much has been made of Andre Onana's shortcomings in the sticks, in the league Ten Hag's men have actually shipped 'just' 27 goals – a record better than Tottenham Hotspur and equal to surprise package, Aston Villa, for instance.

That indicates that had United been more clinical in attack they may well have been more competitive nearer the top end of the table, hence why a January recruit has become something of necessity in order to bolster the frontline.

Man Utd transfer news – forwards

With funds set to be tight this month – unless notable sales are made – The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell and Dan Sheldon have reported that the club are likely to look for low-cost attacking options, rather than attempt to break the bank amid FFP concerns.

Having signed the likes of Wout Weghorst and Odion Ighalo in recent years in the winter window, the report indicates that United could continue that trend of landing a short-term fix, having shown an interest in Bayern Munich's veteran pairing of Thomas Muller and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting.

The club's most advanced interest appears to be in former Chelsea man, Timo Werner, however, with the piece revealing that the Red Devils have already made 'contact' regarding a deal for the RB Leipzig speedster.

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner celebrates scoring a goal.

The suggestion is that Ten Hag and co are keen to learn what it would take to prise the Germany international from his current home, with the 27-year-old currently valued at around €30m (£26m) by CIES Football Observatory.

Timo Werner's season in numbers

There's no denying that United are in need of reinforcement at the top end of the pitch, with the injury prone Anthony Martial coming into the last six months of his deal, while Rasmus Hojlund has endured a slow start to life in England, scoring just one league goal to date.

The fact that Ten Hag has been forced to rely on the young Hojlund as his leading striker is a stark indication of the club's poor planning, with the failure to land leading target Harry Kane now looking even more like a howler.

Player's of Kane's ilk will certainly not be on the market this month, however, nor do United have the funds at present to make such a move, hence why low cost options like Werner are being considered.

That being said, even in their desperate state, the Old Trafford hierarchy must hold fire on a move for the Leipzig man, with it hard to see the wisdom in signing a player who has not only underwhelmed this season, but has also failed to fire in the Premier League previously.

As for 2023/24 thus far, the one-time Stuttgart man has been something of a bystander in Saxony, scoring just twice in 14 appearances in all competitions – only four of which have come from the start.

In the Bundesliga, for instance, the 57-cap international has failed to provide an assist or create a single 'big chance' to go along with his two goals, having also missed two big chances in that time.

Having hardly been flying of late, for United to plump for Werner does not appear to make a whole lot of sense, while the player's time at Stamford Bridge should also have alarms bells ringing.

Werner's stats at Chelsea

Signed from Leipzig for a £45m fee in 2020, the versatile striker – who can also feature on the flanks – looked to be a real statement addition for the Blues at the time, with Frank Lampard and co having won the race for his signature ahead of rivals Liverpool.

Fast forward two years and Werner was packing his bags ahead of a return back to his native Germany, having scored just 23 goals in 89 games in all competitions for the west Londoners – albeit while claiming the Champions League in that time.

Despite being able to "devastate with his pace" – as per talkSPORT's Tony Cascarino – the 5 foot 11 enigma often proved far too "erratic" in front of goal, notably missing a staggering 18 'big chances' in 2020/21 in the league alone.

As ex-United man Rio Ferdinand stated at the time, the Stuttgart native is "frustrating" to watch due to his errant decision-making, with an already goal-shy United side in need of a more clinical and reliable presence to lead the line.

The Red Devils also already boast a "frustrating" talent in the frontline in the form of Antony – as described by Gary Neville – with the £86m addition regularly flattering to deceive in the final third, having failed to register a single goal or assist across all fronts this season.

While Neville suggested that the winger is not at fault for his lofty price tag, even if he had cost half that figure United would still be asking for far more output, with the Brazilian having merely proved himself to be a "one-trick pony" over the last 18 months or so – as per Paul Scholes.

To then partner a player who is neither creating nor finishing at present with a mercurial talent like Werner – who is also unreliable in front of goal – looks likely to be a recipe for disaster, with the club's hierarchy needing to think again before pushing for a move for the German.

Yes, a striker is needed in January, but after the days of Weghorst and Ighalo etc, surely United have learnt their lesson?

Miami head coach Gerard Martino had always planned to rest Messi alongside Sergio Busquets for the match and he defended his decision to leave them out before kick-off.

He said: "We understand the people's frustration, especially in wanting to see these players, but it is our job as the coaching staff to make these decisions that are uncomfortable. We understand what these players provoke in the league and other markets, but we have to take these measures that are sometimes unpleasant for people. But they are beneficial for the players."

Man Utd could land the next Fernandes in "unstoppable" £60m gem

While the season is merely at its mid-point, there is a semblance that the campaign is already over for Manchester United, with manager Erik ten Hag in need of a lengthy FA Cup run in what is now the club's last realistic hope of securing silverware in 2023/24.

The return of the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro from injury could well give the Red Devils the lift that they are craving, although with much of the damage having already been done – including the early exit from Europe – the focus will be beginning to shift toward possible improvements that could be made this summer.

Man Utd could replace Casemiro with “one of South America’s biggest jewels”

Erik ten Hag could look to improve his midfield this January by signing an exciting prospect.

ByTom Lever Jan 5, 2024

There will no doubt be a desire to see a change in tact in the transfer window amid the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, with the INEOS chief already seemingly setting his sights on potential new recruits ahead of next season.

Man Utd transfer news

As per a report from the Standard earlier this week, Ratcliffe is believed to be eyeing a move for Crystal Palace starlet, Michael Olise, as was one of his first signings at Old Trafford, with the wing wizard potentially set to be part of a 'squad overhaul' at the club this summer.

The report suggests that the France U21 international has a release clause as part of his current deal that comes into effect this summer, although having signed a new contract back in August, that figure is likely to be beyond his prior £35m get-out clause.

As per Football Transfers, the belief is that the 22-year-old could command a fee of around £60m, albeit with the possible interest of rivals Arsenal likely to prove something of an obstacle, with the player himself said to favour a move to the Emirates.

Even so, if United can persuade the former Reading man to join Ten Hag's ranks, they could well have their next Bruno Fernandes on their hands.

How Michael Olise compares to Bruno Fernandes

Described as "one of the best wide playmakers in Europe" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Olise has enjoyed a promising campaign thus far at Selhurst Park, with five goals and one assist to his name in just nine Premier League outings.

While injuries have been an issue for the London-born talent, when he is at his best he is seemingly "unstoppable" – according to pundit Darren Bent – having formed a delightful partnership with Eberechi Eze in south London.

An undoubted "joy to watch", in the words of Kulig, the £100k-per-week sensation would certainly be a real statement addition for the Red Devils, particularly due to his stylistic and statistical similarities to Fernandes, as noted by FBref.

That likeness to the United skipper – who also has six goal involvements in the league this season – can be seen by their creative influence for their respective sides, with Olise ranking in the top 10% among his European peers for shot-creating actions and the top 16% for assists per 90, with Fernandes, meanwhile, ranking in the top 3% and the top 21% for those same two metrics, respectively.

While typically deployed on the flanks, the Palace gem can also mirror his Portuguese counterpart in operating in an attacking midfield berth, boasting the defensive prowess needed to thrive in that role as he ranks in the top 15% for tackles made per 90 – Fernandes is just ahead as he ranks in the top 11%.

Although Olise may not yet be at the levels of the former Sporting CP ace – who tops the division for chances created – he is on the right path to be able to emulate him, showcased by the fact that he has created four 'big chances' and averaged 2.2 key passes per game this term. That is not far off Fernandes' return of nine 'big chances' created and an average of 2.9 key passes per game.

The latter man remains the undoubted talisman at the Theatre of Dreams at present, although with few options to compete with or potentially replace the 29-year-old when needed, snapping up a youthful, dynamic talent like Olise may prove essential this summer.

Sunderland could oust Ekwah with late move for 6 ft 7 star

Sunderland will be desperate to stop the rot this Saturday when Stoke City travel to Wearside, Michael Beale keeping everything crossed that his Black Cats side don't succumb to their third defeat in a row in the Championship.

If they were to lose another game – putting them onto 13 losses already after 29 games played – the playoff picture could become even more distant for the stuttering Black Cats and Beale's job could even eventually be on the line.

Beale could attempt to win back over the hardened Sunderland masses with this January buy, therefore, shopping in France potentially to win the player in question's services.

Sunderland want to sign Lyon midfielder

According to a report in French outlet L'Equipe, Sunderland are interested in signing Olympique Lyonnais' midfield warrior Skelly Alvero who comes in at a lofty 6 foot 7 frame.

With the 21-year-old finding himself frozen out of the first-team in France currently – absent from Lyon's last five league encounters – Sunderland could come to the rescue and offer Alvero more game-time.

German side Werder Bremen are also reportedly interested in signing Alvero on a loan deal until the end of the campaign according to L'Equipe, Sunderland just behind the Bundesliga outfit in the queue for the young midfielder.

Having success recently signing Pierre Ekwah, who is a fellow compatriot of Alvero, the 21-year-old could well come into the Sunderland side and usurp the settled Black Cats first-teamer's presence regardless.

The current Lyon man could well come in and form an intimidating midfield duo with Dan Neil in the process, a transfer for Sunderland fans to certainly keep an eye out on.

How Alvero would slot into the Sunderland team

Joining Lyon from fellow French side Sochaux just last summer, Alvero starred for his former club before making the big leap to the Groupama Stadium.

During his time with his previous employers, Alvero would bag five goals and pick up four assists playing for both the Sochaux B team and the senior side.

Moreover, looking at FBRef statistics, Alvero excels in his diligent defensive duties more so than Ekwah currently does at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah.

Helped by his imposing frame on the pitch, Alvero – over the last year on average per 90 minutes – has won 3.05 tackles and 3.98 aerials in contrast to Ekwah's lesser 1.87 tackles and 0.69 aerials.

Whilst Neil in the central midfield two enjoys roaming forward more than the Sunderland number 39, as seen in Neil's 7.01 progressive passes averaged over the same time period, Alvero could come in and fulfil the role of anchor in the Black Cats side far more impressively than Ekwah.

Still, Alvero beats Neil when it comes to successful take-ons – the former coming in at 2.24 to Neil's 0.96 – and could complement Neil's tenacity on the ball brilliantly with similarly brave runs going forward.

Ekwah has also had his fair share of off-days in the Sunderland first team ranks recently, notably giving the ball up against Newcastle United in the already tense Tyne-Wear Derby after a short goal kick out from Anthony Patterson for Alexander Isak to then rifle home.

Signing Alvero would see the Black Cats shop in a left-field market, but with the potential deal being risk-free by loaning Alvero into the building until the end of the season, it could be a buy that pays off.

Chelsea offered £20m Premier League striker with same agent as Reece James

Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign a new striker who shares the same agent as Reece James, as the Blues look at a late January addition.

Chelsea striker rumours

Mauricio Pochettino currently has Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja as his two senior centre-forward options, although the former of the two is currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Chelsea set to make first move for Karim Benzema

The 36-year-old could soon be on the way to Stamford Bridge.

ByCharlie Smith Jan 24, 2024

During that time, there has also been plenty of talk about Broja’s future, with reports suggesting Chelsea would be open to selling for £35m as Crystal Palace, Fulham, West Ham and Wolves all circle. Despite this, Pochettino has recently come out and backed the Albanian, putting his faith in the 22-year-old and comparing him to Harry Kane’s situation earlier in his career.

“All the biggest strikers needed time when they were young. They need to find their own balance. But I still believe that he has the potential to be an amazing striker.

“The process takes time. I always compare it to Harry Kane. He went on loan to Leyton Orient, Norwich and spent time finding his real balance. In our first six months, he started to perform only in December and January, and that’s when we started to see his real potential.

“He’s a player that suffered a big injury last season, he needs to put that big idea behind him, always that is difficult. And we are at Chelsea, he is trying to deliver while compared with the biggest strikers like [Didier] Drogba, [Jimmy Floyd] Hasselbaink or others. That’s always difficult for a young guy.”

Even if Broja remained at the club, there is still an argument that a third centre-forward could be needed, and there hasn’t been a shortage of rumoured targets.

The likes of Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres have been linked as big-money targets, while as short-term solutions, AZ Alkmaar’s Vangelis Pavlidis, Zenit St Petersburg’s Mateo Cassierra, Cercle Brugge’s Kevin Denkey and Atletico Mineiro’s Paulinho have been offered to Chelsea.

Another new forward could now be of interest to the Blues following a transfer update in the last 48 hours.

Chelsea offered Callum Wilson

According to talkSPORT, Callum Wilson has been ‘offered to Chelsea and West Ham for a bargain fee as Newcastle look to cash in before the January transfer window shuts’.

The report claims that Newcastle ‘could be forced to consider offers of between £18million and £20m for Wilson to help ease their concerns over breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules.’

Stamford Bridge could therefore be his next destination, and Wilson is a forward who has netted twice at the stadium before. Wilson, who shares the same agent as James, would arrive with plenty of Premier League experience after making more than 200 appearances in the competition and may still have years of top-flight football left in him at the age of 31.

Eddie Howe is also a big fan of the striker after working with Wilson at Bournemouth and Newcastle, saying last year:

"He's been incredible and I feel that his performance was right up there with one of the best I've seen him play, purely from a tactical perspective.

"He has to lead the press and the one we bounce off initially. He kept going right until the end and his goalscoring record is excellent. I'm delighted for him, he's a huge player for us and a big presence in the dressing room."
