Aston Villa: Emery has Diaby’s dream partner in teen ‘goal-machine’

Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery made some difficult decisions over the summer transfer window as he opted to cash in on a number of talented young prospects.

Who did Aston Villa sell this summer?

The Spanish boss, who led the club to qualification for the group stages of the Europa Conference League last month, decided to sell three U21 prospects who enjoyed impressive loan spells in the Championship last term.

Aaron Ramsey and Cameron Archer both spent the second half of the 2022/23 campaign on loan with Middlesbrough and Philogene spent the season with Cardiff City.

However, they did not do enough to convince Emery that they would be part of his long-term plans and that could open the door for other young players in the academy to make their way through the ranks.

One talented ace who could have the potential to be a future star for the former Villarreal boss is Scottish centre-forward Rory Wilson.

The teenage marksman has been a prolific scorer at youth level and could be a lethal partner for current first-team attacker Moussa Diaby further down the line.

How old is Rory Wilson?

He is a 17-year-old striker who does not turn 18 until January of next year. This means that the Villans prospect still has plenty of time left on his hands to develop and there is no rush for him to emerge as a first-team option in the immediate term.

The Villans signed him from Scottish giants Rangers in the summer of 2022 for a reported development fee of £300k after the prolific teen enjoyed a phenomenal 2021/22 season.

Journalist Barry Anderson claimed that the former Gers academy prodigy racked up a mind-boggling 49 goals for the Light Blues and Scotland's youth teams combined.

However, there was no guarantee that Wilson would be able to carry over his form to English football with Villa or to a higher age group.

How many goals has Rory Wilson scored for Aston Villa?

The Scotland U21 international has slapped away any concerns over how he would adapt to life in England as the sublime forward has produced an eye-catching 20 goals in 25 games for the club's academy sides to date.

Wilson started the 2022/23 campaign with the U18 team and quickly became a reliable source for goals through the middle of the pitch as he found the back of the net 11 times across 11 outings in the U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup.

His sensational form in front of goal earned the Scottish talent progression to the U21 squad and he scored four goals and provided one assist in seven Premier League 2 clashes.

Although, the youngster has started the 2023/24 campaign with the U18s and has fired in an exceptional five goals in three league matches so far.

This means that Wilson, who was once described as a "goal machine" by journalist Jonty Colman, has scored 16 goals in 14 U18 games for Villa since making the move from Rangers ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The Villans appear to have a terrific goalscoring talent on their hands and he could be a future star for Emery's team alongside Diaby in attack.

Villa's current first-choice striker Ollie Watkins, 27, is ten years older than Wilson so the potential is there for the Scottish ace to eventually take over from the England international if he is able to develop into a first-team option.

Diaby, however, only turned 24 in July and could be heading into his prime years as Wilson enters his 20s. They could, therefore, form a dream partnership at the top end of the pitch.

How many career goals has Diaby scored?

The France international has produced 64 club career goals to date and has bagged twice in four Premier League outings since his move to Villa Park from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer.

Diaby, who scored 22 Bundesliga goals in his final two seasons in Germany combined, is able to provide a big goal threat from out wide and could be a lethal player to play alongside Wilson as they could both pose questions to the opposition goalkeeper with their respective finishing ability.

However, the summer signings' creative ability is why they could work so well together. The French wizard has created three 'big chances' and assisted one goal in four top-flight games for the club this season, as per Sofascore.

Aston Villa winger Moussa Diaby.

He also showcased his ingenuity in Germany with 14 'big chances' created and 1.8 key passes per game in the Bundesliga last term. That came after Diaby conjured 15 'big chances' and 1.9 key passes per match for his teammates during the 2021/22 campaign.

Meanwhile, no Aston Villa player managed more than 1.2 key passes per Premier League clash throughout the 2022/23 season, suggesting that Diaby can be Emery's outstanding creator in the final third.

This could make him the perfect partner for Wilson as the former Paris Saint-Germain academy starlet has the quality to consistently put chances on a plate for the striker.

The teen, who has scored 16 goals in 19 appearances for Scotland at U17 level, could thrive off the winger's superb service into the box as he has proven himself to be a prolific scorer for club and country, albeit he is yet to showcase his skills in a senior environment.

The next step for Wilson is now to establish himself as a regular goalscorer for Villa's U21 team and to then catch Emery's eye, whether that is in pre-season or by securing a loan move to gain consistent first-team exposure.

There is no rush for the Scotland youth international to make that next step as he still has plenty of time to develop, but his superb statistics suggest that the potential is there for him to make an impact at first-team level in the future if he can adapt his game to senior football.

Tottenham: Mourinho wants to sign Spurs player, deal "well within" reach

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho is rumoured to have "already" identified one Spurs player as a key signing to fix one problem at Roma.

Latest Spurs news

Since new Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou's arrival in north London, his club's fortunes have absolutely transformed on the pitch. The Lilywhites boast an impressive early-season unbeaten streak; clinching wins over Bournemouth, Man United, Burnley and Sheffield United. Tottenham were also forced to fight back and display their grittier side in 2-2 draws away to both Brentford and, most recently, cross-town rivals Arsenal.

It's been one of Spurs' most promising starts to a Premier League season and one which suggests that chairman Daniel Levy 100-per-cent made the right call in appointing Postecoglou; a hire which was deemed risky by some given his lack of experience in elite European divisions.

Summer signings James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have impressed on-lookers with a series of exceptional displays, with the former marking himself out as a fan favourite already with two goals and two assists. Van de Ven has come in as an ideal partner for Cristian Romero, and the Dutchman has displayed his real comfort in bringing the ball out from defence.

Tottenham face off against fellow high-flyers Liverpool on Saturday, a clash which could be mouth-watering, as both sides head into it unbeaten while looking imperious right now.

Who could leave Spurs?

While the likes of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have thrived under Postecoglou after being on the periphery of Antonio Conte's starting eleven, the same cannot be said for a few other players.

Indeed, one example is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who was a mainstay for Conte and even stood out as one of Tottenham's best-performing players per 90 last season according to WhoScored. The Dane, after seeing his game time become extremely limited, is currently linked with a January exit from N17.

Another player currently outcasted is defender Eric Dier, and he hasn't played a single minute this season. The Englishman's contract is set to expire next summer, with a report from Italy sharing the latest on his future. According to TV Play, sharing news this week, ex-Spurs coach Mourinho has "already" identified the "right solution" to Roma's weakened defensive depth.

Spurs defender Eric Dier.

Both Marash Kumbulla and Chris Smalling are sidelined with injury problems, with Dier coming as the ideal replacement for Smalling from Roma's perspective. The report cites his "running, explosiveness and experience" as qualities Roma "desperately need" right now. It's added that a potential deal to sign Dier is "well within" the Serie A side's reach financially, as his salary is affordable, and the idea of him joining is "circulating" at the club.

The 29-year-old was a mainstay for Conte last term, making 33 top-flight appearances while ranking among Spurs' best for clearances and blocks made per match (WhoScored).

Morgan's Championship absence set to continue

Eoin Morgan insists he can still play Championship cricket this season after breaking a thumb in the nets, but events could conspire against it

The unexpected delight of seeing England’s limited-overs captain, Eoin Morgan, in a Championship match will be delayed after Morgan broke his thumb in the nets.Morgan, who was not picked up by an IPL team this year, has not played a Championship match since he made a pair against Somerset at Merchant Taylor’s School three years ago, an outcome that seemed to encapsulate his gradual isolation from the longer form of the game. But while some were surprised that he declared his availability for Middlesex’s Specsavers Championship campaign – especially after England team-mates, Alex Hales and Adil Rashid, both committed to white-ball only deals – Morgan insists the experience will help with his limited-overs cricket and retains hopes of representing the county later in the season.”I still want to play county cricket and red ball cricket,” Morgan told ESPNcricinfo. “Technically I’m not very good. I’m vulnerable for the first 22-23 balls of my innings and if I still strive to play red-ball it forces me to work on my technique. Until I don’t think it can help my game in any way, I’ll keep playing it. I’ll probably revisit that decision after the 2019 World Cup.”Originally I was going to be available for 12 Championship matches this season. There’s very little ODI and T20 cricket this year. Now I’m missing three games definitely and, depending on how it heals, it could be four.”I have actually been available to play for Middlesex for the two years. I’ve not been selected. But I was due to play this year. I was told I was playing a couple of months ago. I had a box of Duke’s balls sent out to New Zealand and practised with Mark Ramprakash before every training session.”Morgan, who was speaking at the 2018 launch of All Stars, the ECB initiative to get more children playing the game, retains an outside hope that the injury may heal quicker than originally expected. He is due to have another scan within the next 24 hours and, if it is concluded that he does not require surgery, he could return for the Championship match at Hove on May 4.Morgan suffered the injury during a net session at Merchant Taylor’s ground last week. Facing Tom Barber, the left-arm fast bowler who was armed with a red ball at the time, he was hit on the left thumb. “He’s got a yard,” Morgan said in praise of Barber’s pace.Middlesex have been less optimistic, speaking of a “4-6 week absence”. If pessimistic forecasts prove correct then he would be relying on the Royal London Cup to give him regular cricket ahead of England’s opening ODI of the season against Scotland in Edinburgh on June 10, which is quickly followed by a five-match series against Australia. If Morgan then opted for a spell in the Caribbean Premier League, which runs from August 8 to September 16, it would then be quite possible that his Championship absence would extend a further year.Middlesex’s confidence in their untold batting riches as they attempt to regain their Division One status at the first attempt has now dissipated. Their England Lions opener Nick Gubbins has hamstring trouble and England have withdrawn Dawid Malan from the first two rounds of the Championship after his heavy schedule in Australia and New Zealand. The hurried signing of Australian allrounder Hilton Cartwright will only partially answer their needs, though Morgan’s bad luck may open the door to a return for Nick Compton, who had previously been told he was unlikely to feature in the first team this season.

Burnley: Clarets exploring transfer to sign "composed" player for Kompany

Burnley are already looking to sign a new defender but face competition from a number of Premier League rivals, according to a fresh report.

What’s the latest Burnley transfer news?

The Clarets once again had an extremely productive transfer window following their title-winning Championship campaign, bringing in 15 new players to Vincent Kompany’s side.

However, it has proven to be a tricky start to the new season, with defeats to Manchester City, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United leaving them in the bottom three and winless in the top flight.

Time may well be needed for Kompany to get the best out of his current squad, but with the January transfer window fast approaching, it looks as if the club are already looking at potential additions for the second half of the campaign.

According to TEAMtalk, Burnley are one of five Premier League sides who are exploring a move to sign Shakhtar Donetsk star Mykola Matviyenko, with the player’s representatives looking at possible options.

Alongside those at Turf Moor, Crystal Palace, Everton, Sheffield United and West Ham are also keen on the defender.

vincent-kompany-burnley

Who is Mykola Matviyenko?

Matviyenko is primarily a centre-back but can also play as a left-back or right-back and appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €20m Transfermarkt valuation.

The 27-year-old has progressed through the Shakhtar Donetsk academy and has gone on to make 175 senior appearances for the club, contributing to an impressive 22 goals.

The left-footed Ukraine international has impressed over the past 12 months, as per FBref, ranking highly for passes completed, clearances and passes blocked.

Journalist Andrew Todos recently claimed that Matviyenko is capable of operating in either a back four or a back three, describing him as a “composed and experienced centre-back”.

"Matviyenko is a composed and experienced centre-back, who comes across as very assured, especially when playing alongside younger teammates. As he started his career as a full-back, he's got more pace than an average centre-back and this aids him quite a lot in recovery challenges.

"He rarely goes in for wild tackles that might result in bookings or penalties and one of his main strengths is blocking crosses or goalbound shots. He's also very good at playing balls over the top, playing out from the back, and he's versatile.

"In my opinion, he can be world-class when he plays in a formation with three defenders. If he plays in a back four, he should play alongside a tall defender who can help him. He is good as a centre-back but the best matches of his career were when he was in a back three and he played next to wing-backs."

Kompany currently has six centre-back options in Jordan Beyer, Hjalmar Ekdal, Ameen Al-Dakhil, Dara O'Shea, CJ Egan-Riley and Hannes Delcroix, so you could argue that Matviyenko may not be needed.

However, if Burnley view the player as an upgrade at the back after conceding 13 times in their opening five games, then they could well look to push through a move, making this one to keep an eye on ahead of 2024.

Liverpool transfer report: FSG battling Real Madrid for £100m+ signing

Liverpool could look to delve into the transfer market for more attackers soon, and they are battling Real Madrid for one superstar, according to a new report.

Will Liverpool sign more attackers?

The Reds spent their summer rebuilding their midfield, bringing in the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, as well as disposing of dead wood in the middle of the park. While some supporters were also keen to see a new centre-back added to the squad, in order to enhance the depth at Jurgen Klopp's disposal, it was clear that there was enough quality and options in attacking areas.

In Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo, Liverpool arguably have their most impressive group of attackers in recently memory, giving Klopp a plethora of top-quality options and allowing him to rotate effectively during a busy season.

There are doubts over Salah's long-term future at Anfield, however, following strong interest from Saudi Arabia during the summer transfer window, and there is the chance that he decides to move on to pastures new at the end of this season.

Should that happen, Liverpool will clearly need to sign a high-calibre replacement almost immediately, and it is important that they continue to look at long-term options, regardless of the Egyptian's future.

AC Milan's Rafael Leao reacts

Will Liverpool sign Rafael Leao?

According to a report from Spain [via Sempre Milan], the Reds are locking horns with Real Madrid for the signing of AC Milan rising superstar Rafael Leao, who has arguably become their most important player currently, especially after Sandro Tonali left to join Newcastle United in the summer.

The report states that Liverpool and Madrid are "leading the competition" for the Portuguese's services, and a new challenge away from his current club "does not seem to be something Leao would reject". Milan are clearly extremely hesitant to sell possibly their most prized asset, however, and have slapped a €150m (£130.4m) price tag on his shoulders, outlining just how highly he is thought of.

Leao look like a special player currently, arguably looking like one of Europe's most devastating wide players, combining pace, directness and most importantly of all reliable end product. He has scored 45 goals and registered 38 assists in 168 appearances for the Serie A giants, not to mention netting three times for Portugal at international level.

The 24-year-old is admittedly predominantly a left-sided player, and a right-sided option would be needed if Salah did leave, but there is no reason why he couldn't thrive there, or why Diaz or Jota couldn't potentially switch flanks.

Leao has been described as a "top player" by Graham Potter in the past, as well as his quality being hailed as "beautiful" by Ian Wright, and he has the ability to be a long-term superstar at Anfield, with his best years still lying ahead of him and his peak not likely to disappear for another six or seven years.

The amount of money being mooted is clearly a huge amount – he is contracted until the summer of 2028, which puts Milan in a strong bargaining position – but if Liverpool did receive a massive fee for Salah next summer, the funds would be available to pay it.

Advanced talks: Everton now close to agreeing new off-field deal

Everton are thought to be in advanced talks to seal what could be a controversial off-field deal, according to one report.

What’s the latest Everton news?

The Toffees have endured a frustrating start to the new Premier League campaign under Sean Dyche, with the club failing to back up promising wins at Brentford and Aston Villa with a defeat to Luton Town at Goodison Park last time out. The club could well be in line for another battle at the bottom of the Premier League table, currently sitting on just four points from their opening seven top-flight fixtures.

There has been better news off the pitch, though, with the possibility of 777 Partners taking full control of the club. The company signed an agreement last month to acquire Farhad Moshiri's full stake in the club, although a deal still needs approval from the Premier League, FA and the Financial Conduct Authority.

The prospective new owners could soon have plenty on their plate, though, with recent reports claiming Burnley, Leeds and Leicester have written a joint letter to 777 about potentially suing the club for £300m if they are found guilty of breaking Premier League spending rules. However, the club appear to be making off-field plans ahead of the 2024/25 season, one of which is a new kit supplier.

Football Insider shared a report in the last 48 hours regarding Everton and a potential new kit manufacturer. The Toffees are believed to be in advanced talks with Castore over a deal which could be the first commercial deal struck by 777 Partners.

However, Castore are currently facing criticism from those at Aston Villa, while Newcastle United have already triggered an early exit clause with the company. There has also been criticism from other clubs they supply for including Rangers and Wolves, so an agreement with Everton could be a controversial one.

Who makes Everton’s kits?

Everton are in a partnership with Hummel at this moment in time, however, the deal is set to expire at the end of the current campaign, which appears to have led to talks with Castore. Football Insider add that Hummel’s deal on Merseyside is worth around £8m a season, a higher fee than Castore pays for any of the clubs they represent.

Aston Villa’s men’s and women’s players have complained over the ‘wet-look’ of Castore’s shirts, with the company looking at if there are any short-term solutions. Therefore, Everton could be taking a risk, should they sign with Castore, especially with Newcastle, Rangers and Wolves also seemingly not left thrilled with the company.

It looks as if an agreement is one to keep an eye on over the coming months, though, especially with plans needing to be made in advance over a new kit for the 2024/25 season.
