Liverpool: Reds could have signed £40m Joel Matip upgrade

The malaise that had seeped into Anfield after years of success under Jurgen Klopp has been wiped away in the early stages of Liverpool's Premier League campaign, with a promising start the result of impressive work on the transfer front.

The Reds finished fifth in the English top-flight last season – their lowest Premier League finish since coming eighth in the 2015/16 edition – and were a shadow of their former selves, so intense, oiled and incisive under Klopp's illustrious tutelage.

It was clear that change was paramount, and with the mass midfield exodus creating space for fresh faces, the strategy needed to succeed.

Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch were signed to reshape the Anfield centre, and with ten points from a possible 12 thus far, the cohesion and verve looks to have been rekindled – last term, it took Klopp's side nine fixtures to reach as many points.

Shipping 47 goals as opposed to 26 during the 2021/22 campaign, Liverpool's summer pursuit of a centre-back was understandable, and supporters anticipated an exciting addition to the backline.

This wasn't the case. Focus remained on the midfield and the club's German manager retained his belief that his current crop could thrive once more.

While this may yet prove a shrewd move in Klopp's favour, it's hard to shake off the feeling that a first-class star was there for the taking, with Sporting Lisbon's Goncalo Inacio the man touted for a move to Liverpool across much of 2023.

Did Liverpool nearly sign Goncalo Inacio?

In August, Inacio penned a new long-term contract with Sporting Lisbon to end speculation of a summer move, having been at the very centre of interest from a wealth of Europe's top outfits, including Liverpool.

Prior to agreeing to an extension, the 22-year-old held a £40m release clause, raised to €60m (£52m) upon his fresh deal, and many Reds supporters were left perplexed that intrigue was not followed up.

Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio.

Indeed, according to reports all summer, Liverpool were hot on the Portgual starlet's trail and were mulling over paying the big bucks to secure his services.

He certainly appears to fit the bill; a left-footed central defender, Inacio boasts ball-playing prowess and intelligence in his craft, even hailed as the "complete" package by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

It's clear that the Merseyside outfit will prioritise the signing of a centre-half next, and while Inacio's release clause has not been raised, he surely must remain the number one pick after his superlative early performances in his homeland.

How good is Goncalo Inacio?

Having made 125 appearances for his side, Inacio has scored 11 goals and provided nine assists from the backline, demonstrating a distinctive set of skills that fit the mould of the perfect modern-day central defender.

First-rate in surging forward with the ball at his feet and splitting the lines apart with his precise passing, Inacio would slot into Klopp's Liverpool system seamlessly, with the Reds implementing a transitional game with high pressures and direct, forward-thinking passing.

goncalo-inacio-liverpool-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

To emphasise this, the two-cap international ranks among the top 1% of centre-backs across the eight leagues most similar to the Portuguese top-flight over the past year for passes attempted, progressive passes and shot-creating actions, the top 3% for assists, the top 4% for progressive carries and the top 7% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

Explaining how the gem would be a tailor-made addition for the Anfield side, BBC Sports' Raj Chohan took to Twitter to say: "Gonçalo Inácio is the perfect counter-weight to Konaté. Inacio-VVD-Konaté: Build-up conductor. Leader/aerial dominator/switches of play. Immense recovery speed & coverage of space."

Across the duration of his senior career thus far, the 6 foot 1 titan has recorded a pass success rate of 88.7%, averaging 3.5 long balls and 0.5 dribbles per match.

To put that into context, Liverpool's £75m star centre-back Virgil van Dijk has recorded a career passing accuracy of 87.6%, averaging 4.1 long balls per match.

In the Liga Portugal last season, Inacio completed 90% of his balls, won 59% of his contested duels and succeeded with a remarkable 89% of his dribbles.

He may be young and yet to earn a taste of football on English shores, but Inacio looks a bona fide prodigy and would have been a brilliant signing for the Kop, and while it is entirely possible that interest is revisited next summer – or perhaps even at the season's midpoint – his acquisition this summer would have offered Liverpool an exciting new tool, opening up a new channel of dynamism from the back.

Had Inacio arrived at Anfield and been handed a starting berth, it would have allowed Van Dijk to shift onto his favoured right side and provided the club with a natural presence on the left half of the central defence, potentially sending someone like Joel Matip packing.

Will Liverpool sell Joel Matip?

With Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Matip all making up the defensive ranks – and rising academy graduate Jarell Quansah – the Reds have the numbers in defence but, as last season brutally exposed, not quite the same level of overall quality and fluidity that was formerly at Klopp's disposal.

Matip, a stalwart since joining from Schalke on a free transfer in 2015, making 189 appearances and winning all the silverware under Klopp's wing, has now entered the final year of his contract at the club and was among the culprits of a poor season, branded "shaky" and "slow" by The Athletic's James Pearce in February.

Liverpool defender Joel Matip.

Now playing second fiddle to Konate anyway, it is unlikely that Matip will return to the starting line-up with regularity when all options are fit, and it is probable that he is approaching the culmination of his time on Merseyside.

Had Liverpool signed Inacio, that process might have been accelerated, with the Cameroonian even attracting attention from the likes of French side Rennes, who were seeking cover for the possible departee Arthur Theate, who ultimately remained in Ligue 1.

Klopp and co may have missed a trick by not ruthlessly shipping Matip on and replacing him with a prodigious talent in Inacio, and while it will not unravel a campaign that tantalises brighter fortunes, it is undoubtedly an area that needs renovation, and Sporting Lisbon's starring centre-back was the man for the job.

Vai seguir no Palmeiras? Papo entre Vitor Hugo e Trabzonspor fica parado

MatériaMais Notícias

Vitor Hugo deve permanecer no Palmeiras.

Arsenal: Arteta Could Sign £80m "Lion" To Replace Balogun

Arsenal are reported to be close to cashing in on the sale of Hale End graduate Folarin Balogun, leaving questions over whether Mikel Arteta will eye another striker.

The Spaniard has already signed versatile forward Kai Havertz this summer in attack, however with Gabriel Jesus only just nearing his return from injury, the Gunners have had to rely on Eddie Nketiah to lead the line so far this campaign.

Arteta has utilised Havertz in midfield at the Emirates, which is a plus for the German who excelled in such areas while at Bayer Leverkusen, however theoretically leaves Arsenal short in the depth of their strike department.

Who could Arsenal sign this summer?

Considering the injury blow to Jurrien Timber, it’s highly unlikely that the north Londoners will prioritise anything above signing a defender in the time remaining in the transfer window.

However, a swoop in January could come at the perfect time for one player that has been rumoured to be of interest to the Gunners.

A report from the Times has revealed that Brentford are braced for bids in the attempt to sign striker Ivan Toney in January, with Arsenal named as one of the ‘interested parties’.

The Englishman will be able to return to action in January 2024 from his eight-month ban from football due to betting breaches of the FA’s rulings, setting up a potentially exciting swoop for the north Londoners in the winter window.

It’s said that the forward is valued at £80m by the Bees, who will be reluctant to let the 27-year-old leave when he returns.

What could Ivan Toney offer to Arsenal?

Most clubs in the Premier League would be honoured to have a marksman as potent as Toney in their squad, not many more than Arsenal who are arguably a reliable goalscorer away from being in the same calibre as Manchester City.

Considering Balogun’s transfer status, it could be the ideal time for Arteta to consider a potential move for Toney, who revealed on the Diary of a CEO podcast his admiration for the Gunners.

In Balogun, the north Londoners could have had more potent goalscorer than the likes of Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus, with the American netting 21 times in Ligue 1 last season during his loan at Rennes.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

On his return, it never seemed as though the 22-year-old’s future would be within Arteta’s squad, making the opportunity to cash in on him an attractive prospect for both parties.

While the Hale End graduates’ scoring streak was impressive, it was the first time he had consistently found the net at senior level, with his three goals scored on loan at Middlesbrough the season prior far from impressive.

In Toney, Arsenal could have the definition of an “extremely prolific” striker, as he was once lauded by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Scoring 24 goals in his final campaign in League One at Peterborough before joining Brentford, where he then scored 31 goals in the Championship to fire the Bees to promotion, via Transfermarkt, there were naturally questions over whether he could do it in the top-flight.

During the two campaigns since Brentford’s promotion, the Englishman has scored on 32 occasions in the Premier League, including 20 goals last term, seeing him dubbed a “lion” by manager Thomas Frank in 2021.

Arsenal could ease the woes of Balogun’s departure by making a swift move for Toney in January, in a purchase that could make Arteta’s side forget all about the Hale End product and close the gap on City.

Renshaw's 170 propels Queensland

Discarded Australian Test opener Matt Renshaw made a statement to the national selectors with a commanding 170 to put the Queensland Bulls in control on day one against Victoria at the MCG.Renshaw had endured a lean period after being dropped from the Test squad prior to the Ashes series but has found some form in the last two Shield matches. He struck 12 fours and four sixes in a fluent 218-ball innings that ended at the hands of Fawad Ahmed with more than 20 overs remaining in the day. Renshaw was well supported by Sam Heazlett during an 89-run stand. Heazlett cruised to an unbeaten 63 by the close with Jack Wildermuth racing to 42 not out.The Victoria bowlers toiled hard but only broke through four times on a surface that has yielded a lot of runs this summer.

"Can’t wait to see him" – Journalist hails "incredible" Tottenham teenager

Journalist Mitch Fretton has hailed the sky-high potential of Tottenham Hotspur youngster Alfie Devine, currently on loan at Port Vale, after some recent news this week.

Tottenham Hotspur youth academy

As new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou oversees a truly excellent start to the new Premier League season with his senior squad, there are currently a crop of very exciting youngsters honing their skills in the background.

Indeed, perhaps the most exciting potential starlet to emerge in recent years is striker Dane Scarlett, who was once compared to Man United star Marcus Rashford by ex-Lilywhites head coach Jose Mourinho.

“He is a diamond, a kid with incredible potential,” Mourinho told BT Sport in 2021 (via talkSPORT).

“He has worked many times with the first team and that gives him a different personality. He is still 16, 17 soon [in March] and I believe next season he will be a first-team squad player because he has a lot of talent.

“He is going to be a fantasic player and I hope everything around him goes well. He is a striker, a number nine, I have been playing him from the sides similar to Marcus Rashford and he is very clever."

dane-scarlett-tottenham-hotspur-harry-kane-academy-cristian-stellini

Scarlett is currently on a temporary spell at Ipswich Town in the Championship, and it will be very interesting to see how he fairs in a tough, tough division.

Meanwhile, young striker Troy Parrott, who was once tipped as a potential heir to Harry Kane, is also out on loan at Eredivisie side Excelsior as the Republic of Ireland international looks to kick his career on the right path.

The aforementioned two are just some examples of the talent N17 can produce, and another one who has been tipped for stardom is midfielder Devine.

How good is Alfie Devine?

The 19-year-old, who is currently on his own temporary stint at League One side Port Vale, has been praised by Sky Sports pundit and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher in the past.

Devine received quite the accolade this week, having been given the opportunity to train with England's senior side as they gear up for a UEFA Euro qualifying match against Ukraine on Saturday.

The teenage talent was praised by sections of the media as a result of this news, including reliable football.london journalist Alasdair Gold.

"Big week for Alfie Devine," said Gold on X.

"First that terrific performance for Port Vale, with a goal and assist, and now drafted in from the England U20s to train with the senior side under the watchful eye of Gareth Southgate."

Another reporter in Fretton, who works as an editorial content executive for LiveScore, added fuel to the fire with his own assessment of Devine; explaining how he can become "huge" for Spurs.

"I know he’s a long way off yet, but I’m so happy for Alfie Devine to be training with the senior England squad," wrote Fretton on X.

"He has huge potential and I can’t wait to see him get regular minutes for Spurs, absolutely incredible talent!"

Following his stint at Vale, it appears Postecoglou may have a future prodigy on his hands once Devine returns to his parent club.

Spurs Close To Agreeing Deal To Sell Davinson Sanchez

Ange Postecoglou has brought some much-needed ruthlessness to Tottenham Hotspur, both on and off the pitch, resulting in an excellent and unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

The Lillywhites look better than they have done for a long time, despite selling club-record goalscorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich this summer. Others have stepped up to fill the England captain's golden boots, however, and now Spurs are flying.

It is a new era which does not accommodate for sentiment, as proven by Hugo Lloris' lack of involvement, with reports suggesting that Spurs could even terminate his contract at the club.

Meanwhile, even though the North London club are unable to buy any more reinforcements now that the transfer window is shut in England, they have reportedly agreed a deal to sell an out-of-favour defender.

What's the latest Spurs transfer news?

Welcoming the likes of James Maddison, who has scored twice and assisted twice in four impressive Premier League games at his new club, Spurs had a successful summer when it came to incomings.

Now, Daniel Levy and co have reportedly turned their attention towards bidding farewell to players who are not in the plans of Postecoglou in the current campaign.

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, one of those players will likely be centre-back Davinson Sanchez, with a deal close to being agreed with Galatasaray to sell the defender. As per Galetti, the final details of a transfer fee are being discussed, and a full agreement is expected soon.

"Davinson Sanchez from Tottenham to Galatasaray is almost a DONE DEAL. Just last details of the transfer fee are under discussion: the full agreement is expected soon."

It comes as little surprise that the defender is closing in on an exit away from North London this season, given that he has featured just once for Spurs in four Premier League games in the current campaign so far.

Should Spurs sell Davinson Sanchez?

Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez.

Whilst Sanchez is no longer the preferred option at Spurs, without him, Postecoglou will just have just three senior centre-backs to call on until at least January, with those being Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, and Micky van de Ven. And, even though Ben Davies can slot into that position using his versatility, the left-back may not be thrust into the role on a consistent basis.

Given that the defender is currently 27 years of age, however, if Spurs receive a good enough fee, and go on to replace him in January, then Sanchez's exit could be seen as a suitable one for all parties.

The hope will be that the Lillywhites avoid injuries within their backline, helped by the fact that they'll have fewer fixtures to worry about after failing to qualify for Europe last season.

Sanchez is someone who has struggled to maintain form, too, and even came under fire by former Colombia manager Jorge Luis Pinto, who told ESPN F90, via The Sun:

"Four years ago, I told my son, who loves football, that Davinson is not a centre-back for the Colombia national team.

"With all the respect that Davinson deserves, he is a healthy, correct, hardworking man and everything, but he doesn’t have the talent, the playing time, all those details that a centre-back needs.

"The time of play, the handling of game intent, the handling of backs, the defensive breakdowns, the shock impact that sometimes you can’t be so aggressive."

Williams, Erasmus fifties hand Canada first loss

Gerhard Erasmus followed up his final-over heroics from a day earlier to partner Craig Williams for a 95-run sixth-wicket stand that set up Namibia’s 17-run win

The Report by Peter Della Penna13-Feb-2018ICC/SportsfileBatsman Gerhard Erasmus followed up his final-over heroics from 24 hours earlier with his second consecutive half-century, teaming with allrounder Craig Williams for a 95-run sixth-wicket stand as Namibia handed Canada their first loss of the tournament, by 17 runs at United Cricket Field. At a ground that has been a bowler’s paradise in the opening hour of play, Canada won the toss and unsurprisingly sent the hosts in. But they struggled to break through, as Stephan Baard and Lohan Louwrens survived the Powerplay with a 47-run opening stand. Navneet Dhaliwal, whose part-time medium pace ripped apart Kenya on Sunday, struck twice in the 12th over to bring Canada back. But Williams produced Namibia’s highest score of the tournament – 82 off 89 balls – before departing in the 48th over. Erasmus had been with him for much of the way, and once again took Namibia into the last over to forge a commanding total of 268.Ruvindu Gunasekera, the tournament’s top-scorer with 207 runs, continued his stellar run with another half-century. Dhanuka Pathirana and Dhaliwal steered the chase after Gunasekera’s departure, and with 87 to win with 10 overs to go and seven wickets in hand, Canada were favorites, given the United’s short boundaries. But left-arm medium pacers JJ Smit and Jan Frylinck bowled sensational spells to rip out Canada’s middle order. The pair bowled eight of the final ten overs and took four wickets. They were at their best in the final 12 balls. With 28 needed to win, Smit conceded six singles in the 49th. Frylinck began the final over conceding just two singles over the first three balls, effectively clinching victory.

Selecting Kohli in 2008 cost me my job – Vengsarkar

The former chairman of selectors has accused N Srinivasan and MS Dhoni of favouring the Chennai Super Kings player S Badrinath

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Mar-2018

AFP

Dilip Vengsarkar believes he paid a hefty price – his job as chairman of selectors – for selecting a young Virat Kohli, Under-19 World Cup winner, ahead of S Badrinath, domestic stalwart, back in 2008. At an event to felicitate sports journalists, Vengsarkar accused N Srinivasan, the then BCCI treasurer, and then captain MS Dhoni of favouring the Chennai Super Kings and Tamil Nadu player Badrinath.Vengsarkar went on to accuse Srinivasan of costing him his job as the chairman of the selection committee and replacing him with former India and Tamil Nadu player Kris Srikkanth. However, at the time, Vengsarkar could have qualified for an extension of his term if he had given up a conflict of interest that arose from his being vice-president of the Mumbai Cricket Association. In July 2008, when Sharad Pawar was the president, the BCCI working committee approved a new criteria concerning any conflict of interest pertaining to a selector. The clause, which was ratified at the AGM later that year, said a selector could not hold a dual post. Vengsarkar refused to stand down as MCA vice-president despite having served only half of his four-year term. The selection that Vengsarkar spoke of was for the limited-overs leg of the 2008 tour of Sri Lanka, incidentally the first year of the IPL. Super Kings captain Dhoni had been the limited-overs captain for a year. Asked which of his roles – player, captain, chairman of selection committee – was the toughest, Vengsarkar picked selector and went on to explain.”There was an Emerging Players tournament between Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and India in 2008,” Vengsarkar said. “We decided to send only Under-23 players for this tour. That year, we had won the U-19 World Cup as well, and Virat Kohli was the captain of that team. We included him in that team.”I went to Brisbane to watch those matches. This match was against New Zealand, and they had a stronger side than us. They had a few Test players too. In that match he scored 123 not out, and I knew we needed to play him in the Indian team. I felt he was mature as a batsman.”Kohli did score an unbeaten 120 as an opener in the match Vengsarkar spoke of, helping India chase down a target of 249 set by a New Zealand side that included Jesse Ryder, Martin Guptill, BJ Watling, Corey Anderson and Hamish Bennett.”I felt the ODI leg of the Sri Lanka tour was an ideal situation to include him in the squad,” Vengsarkar said. “The other four selectors told me, ‘Dilip we will do whatever you say. There is no problem at all.’ But Gary Kirsten and Dhoni were reluctant because they said they hadn’t seen Kohli before. I told them, ‘You haven’t seen him but I have. This boy needs to play.'”I knew that Badrinath was from the south and he was from Chennai Super Kings. From N Srinivasan’s team. He would have to miss out if Kohli had to be picked. And that happened. I picked Virat Kohli, and Badrinath went out.”As it turned out, Sachin Tendulkar missed the ODIs with injury, which gave Badrinath an opportunity to play. Kohli played all five matches, Badrinath three. Kohli averaged 31.50, scoring a half-century too. Badrinath averaged 19.5 in the three innings he got. India won that series, their first bilateral success in Sri Lanka. However, Vengsarkar said the selection committee meeting was not the last of the resistance he had to face. “Next day Srinivasan asked me, ‘How could you leave Badrinath?'” Vengsarkar said. “I said I had seen the Emerging tour, and that Virat Kohli was an exceptional player. He said, ‘But Badrinath has scored 800 runs for Tamil Nadu.’ I said he will get his chance. Srinivasan said, ‘When will he get his chance? He is 29 [27, actually].’ I said he will get his chance when he gets it. I cannot make guarantees.”The next day he took [Kris] Srikkanth to Sharad Pawar – the BCCI president – and sent me home. That was the end of my career as a selector.”The decision to disqualify state officials from being national selectors was ratified at BCCI’s AGM in September 2008, where Srikkanth was appointed chairman of selectors, and where Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar took over as the board’s secretary and president respectively. The contentious selection was made in early August that year. Incidentally Badrinath had called the rejection a “crushing blow” that left him numb. “Forget Emerging Players Trophy, I have scored heavily during the A series against Australia and South Africa earlier and the only player to have done better than me in domestic competitions is Gautam Gambhir,” Badrinath told then. “When Manoj Tiwary went for the tri-series in Australia earlier this year, I was intrigued. Still, I tried to keep my cool. Now it’s Virat Kohli. This is really going nowhere.”Vengsarkar is not the only selector to have spoken of Srinivasan’s influence on selections. Mohinder Amarnath, the chairman of selectors in 2011-12, has in the past accused Srinivasan of blocking a move to remove Dhoni as the limited-overs captain after India had been whitewashed in successive Test series in England and Australia. However, Srinivasan was the president of the board then. The BCCI’s constitution said all captaincy changes had to be ratified by the board president. This one wasn’t, and Dhoni went on to captain India until after the 2015 World Cup.

Newcastle keen on promising midfielder in January, Howe is a huge fan

Newcastle United could make further signings in the January transfer window and one player has emerged as a primary target, according to a fresh update.

Will Newcastle make signings in January?

The Magpies have steadied the ship after a difficult start to the season, enjoying a positive couple of results that will hopefully signal the start of a big turnaround in fortunes.

Eddie Howe's side battled their way to a 1-0 win at home to Brentford in the Premier League last Saturday, before drawing 0-0 away to AC Milan in their Champions League opener – a result that could look so important come the end of the group stages later this year. They may not have been vintage performances, but it has clearly still been an improvement.

Newcastle enjoyed a good summer in the transfer market, most notably bringing in Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes from Milan and Leicester City respectively, but more signings are required moving forward, in order for them to keep in touch with their rivals at the top of the Premier League and not go backwards.

Added depth in the midfield is something that Howe could look to do in January, allowing rotation to be aided across four different competitions in the second half of the season, and it looks as though they have lined up one key target already.

Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz.

Will Newcastle sign Carlos Alcaraz?

According to an update from talkSPORT, Newcastle are eyeing a move for Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz in January, with Howe personally seeing the 20-year-old as a strong option to bring in.

"Newcastle are among a number of clubs keeping tabs on Southampton midfielder Carlos ‘Charlie’ Alcaraz. The Magpies made an enquiry for Alcaraz during the summer transfer window and manager Eddie Howe is an admirer of the 20-year-old Argentine.

"It will not have gone unnoticed at St James’s Park that Alcaraz is struggling to command a place in Saints’ starting line-up despite the fact the recently relegated side have lost their last three games. Alcaraz scored four goals in 18 Premier League games last season following a £12m move from Racing Club."

Alcaraz may not necessarily be an established footballer who is playing at the top level every week, but he could be an exiting young signing who comes in as a squad player, developing over time and becoming a key man eventually.

The 20-year-old has scored five goals in 28 appearances for Southampton, as well as chipping in with two assists, and he did play 18 times in the Premier League last season, showing that he can perform in England's top flight.

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has praised Alcaraz in the past, saying he "has a bit of everything in his game", while football talent scout Jacek Kulig has lauded him as "one of the biggest talents in Argentina".

It is encouraging to see Newcastle continuing to look at bringing in top young talent, rather than simply news signings for the here and now, and it will enable the club to keep progressing for many years to come, rather than resting on their laurels and not reaching their potential.
