Arsenal 21 y/o Wanted By German And English Clubs

Journalist Charles Watts has revealed that young Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is likely to leave this summer having "caught the attention" of clubs in England and Germany.

Who will Arsenal sell this summer?

Mikel Arteta and co will likely be set for a busy summer with a number of new incomings expected. For instance, £200m might be needed to land targets Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo.

Of course, though, some exits will happen too and Granit Xhaka is one player who could bring in some money – around £13m to be exact – as he looks set to join Bayer Leverkusen.

The Premier League club will offload over lower-profile players too, and it seems as though 21-year-old goalkeeper Okonkwo could be on the list of summer departures.

Indeed, when talking on his YouTube channel, the journalist how the youngster has caught the eye both at home and abroad with some impressive loan spells.

He explained (5:40): "Arthur Okonkwo, obviously the very young goalkeeper at Arsenal – very highly rated.

"My understanding is there's lots of interest in him this summer. A move looks very likely, he's had a very good loan spell – two very good loan spells in fact.

He added (6:27): "He's caught the attention of a lot of clubs, both in England, but abroad as well, especially in Germany; I believe there's lots of interest in him. he's only got a year left on his contract."

Who is Arthur Okonkwo?

Last summer, the goalkeeper went on loan to Crewe Alexandra before then heading to Austria in January to finish the campaign with Sturm Graz.

He evidently impressed a great deal in that period as Watts now reports he has suitors in both countries ahead of a possible exit from Arsenal.

He played 26 times for the League Two side, keeping 10 clean sheets while in the Austrian Football Bundesliga, he has played 14 games, losing just four times and winning the rest with four clean sheets to his name too.

An England youth international at under-18 level (who can also present Nigeria), Okonkwo has been at the club since joining the Hale End Academy as an eight-year-old but has yet to make a competitive senior appearance for the Gunners (but has played in pres-eason matches).

Aaron Ramsdale and Mikel Arteta

With Aaron Ramsdale and Matt Turner ahead of him in the pecking order though, he might feel as though his career will be better off if he leaves this summer with the promise of regular minutes at a new club.

Celtic May Already Have Their Dream Hart Replacement

Celtic could secure the domestic treble with a win over Inverness in the Scottish Cup final next month but their form in the Champions League was a cause for concern.

The Hoops failed to win any of their six group stage matches in the competition, losing four, and finishing bottom, exiting Europe completely instead of finishing third and dropping into the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou could, therefore, be in the market to improve his squad with a view to being able to compete on the continental stage next season and one player who could suffer from that is goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer, via Football Scotland, Tam McManus said that the club will be looking for an "upgrade" on the veteran, stating:

"I think he’s good domestically but if Celtic want to do anything in the Champions League I don’t think he’s good enough."

"I think now you are starting to see it after that game (St Mirren) and I thought he was poor in the Old Firm game as well. For the first goal it’s low and he’s got [to] get down and get that."

In six Champions League appearances, Hart conceded 1.68 more goals than expected based on the post-shot xG value of the efforts against him and failed to stop a single cross that came into the box, which shows that the ex-England international underperformed between the sticks as he was a below average shot-stopper who did not alleviate any pressure on his defence from crossing situations.

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Postecoglou could unearth the vital upgrade Celtic could need in that position in Europe by unleashing a talented gem from the academy – Josh Clarke.

Who is Josh Clarke?

He is an 18-year-old goalkeeper who currently plays for the Scottish giants' B team and the 6 foot 2 colossus could be the heir to Hart's position in the team.

In the 2022/23 campaign, the teenager has kept eight clean sheets and conceded 20 goals in 18 Lowland League appearances for the club.

This comes after he joined from Northern Irish side Glenavon last summer, where he had made a first-team breakthrough. The ace played six senior matches, including once in the Europa League play-off, and this means that the prospect already has experience playing above academy level.

Clarke, who was hailed as "phenomenal" and "very composed" by Glenavon defender Mark Haughey, recently caught the eye in the Glasgow Cup final. Writer Josh McCafferty claimed that he pulled off "terrific exploits" to save four penalties in the shoot-out and tried to play out from the back throughout the match.

This suggests that the teenager, who has been called up by Northern Ireland's senior team at international level, has the potential to be a goalkeeper who is comfortable at building up play from between the sticks, rather than being uncomfortable with having to play intricate football.

Postecoglou could, therefore, find a future Celtic star and a possible upgrade on Hart, whose performances left far too much to be desired in the Champions League, by unleashing the 18-year-old, whose youth and quality could provide the team with a breath of fresh air in Europe.

Given his relative inexperience and young age, it would be a gamble by the Australian head coach but one that could provide a huge pay-off and save the club millions by preventing them from needing to sign a new goalkeeper, which is why it is worth giving the titan a chance to impress.

Umar Akmal returns to Pakistan's T20 squad

Pakistan have recalled Umar Akmal to their T20 squad to face world champions West Indies in three matches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from September 23.Akmal last played international cricket at the World T20 in March and was left out of the training camp in May, ahead of the tour of England, on disciplinary grounds. He was one of two players that former coach Waqar Younis felt should go back to domestic cricket and re-earn his place in the Pakistan side. In this season’s National T20 Cup, Akmal hit a career-best unbeaten 115 that also included him hitting experienced medium-pacer Yasir Arafat for 34 runs in one over.

Changes in the squad

Out: Amad Butt

It is learnt that Akmal was cleared for Pakistan duty after he had told Shaharyar Khan, the PCB chairman, at a one-on-one meeting last month that there would not be any further issues with regard to his conduct.”We always thought that Umar deserved a place in the T20 squad and he indeed is in very good form,” Tauseef Ahmed, a member of Pakistan’s selection committee, told ESPNcricinfo. “We really don’t need to go back into past [and think about] why he was dropped. We got the required clearance from PCB before picking him. He is a good batsman and there is always a place for him in the squad.”Fast bowler Mohammad Irfan had picked up hamstring and calf injuries on the tour of England in the only match he played and has been left out. Mohammad Hafeez was also out of consideration due to injury. Amad Butt, the 21-year old uncapped seamer, was the only player dropped from the squad that played England.Left-arm seamer Rumman Raees, who was named to play the World T20 but was later injured, and batting allrounder Saad Nasim, who has not played for Pakistan in over a year, have found a place in the 15-member squad.Nasim was picked for tactical reasons. “We want to take a chance with a legspinner against West Indies,” Ahmed said. “And observing him in the national circuit, I think he can give us some variety as he is also a solid batsman.”Raees has been earmarked as a future prospect. “Rumman on other hand is booming fast bowler and we want to keep him on line with the national squad,” Ahmed said. “He had been outstanding at the domestic level and we want him to be in contention.”Pakistan’s new T20 captain Sarfraz Ahmed had led them to one of their most emphatic victories in the format, against England on Wednesday, to round off the tour.Pakistan squad: Sarfraz Ahmed (capt), Khalid Latif, Sharjeel Khan, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, Mohammad Nawaz, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali, Sohail Tanvir, Rumman Raees, Umar Akmal, Saad Nasim

VAR Misses Shocking Moment In 1-1 Liverpool Draw

Referee John Brooks and his VAR team may have made a huge error in the recent Liverpool draw for not sending Tyrone Mings off for a horror tackle on Cody Gakpo.

What’s the latest on Liverpool and VAR?

The Reds were up against Aston Villa this weekend in the Premier League but a draw means their hopes of a top-four finish are only just hanging on by a thread.

The away team took the lead in the first half when Jacob Ramsey hit a sweet volley at the far post to open the scoring and it took until the 89th minute for Liverpool to draw level.

Indeed, playing in his final game at Anfield, club icon Roberto Firmino scored from close range to earn the Reds a point on the day.

However, the outcome of the game could have perhaps been different had referee Brooks reached for a red instead of a yellow earlier on in the match.

Shortly before half time, Mings stretched to win the ball but ended up planting his studs into Gakpo’s chest but avoid major punishment.

Did Mings deserve a red card against Liverpool?

As the images above on Twitter show, the Liverpool man was left with some brutal stud marks on his chest but VAR, somehow, evidently felt it wasn’t enough to upgrade the foul to a red card.

It was reminiscent of Nigel de Jong’s horror tackle on Xabi Alonso in the 2010 World Cup final which also saw the perpetrator avoid a red card – though VAR wasn’t in use back then.

Journalist James Pearce certainly seemed to think it was a foul deserving of more severe punishment. He wrote on Twitter: “Mings very lucky that his challenge on Gakpo isn’t upgraded from a yellow to a red by VAR. Caught Gakpo in the chest with his studs.”

Before adding: “Can’t believe Brooks wasn’t advised to look at the monitor.”

To make things worse, the Reds also had a goal controversially ruled out for offside in the game too and decision that left manager Jurgen Klopp baffled.

Indeed, he told the press (via Liverpoolfcnews): “I asked the referee why the offside goal was offside. He explained it to me. He thinks it isn’t a deliberate action from the defender, I think it is. VAR isn’t sure.”

Spurs Fans Told To "Relax" Over 29-y/o £200k-p/w Star

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to keep Harry Kane this summer despite transfer interest, Fabrizio Romano has claimed.

What's the latest on Harry Kane?

The England captain has had yet another stellar season for Spurs, scoring 30 goals, but with his side failing to qualify for European football, there has been intense speculation that he could depart this summer, with just one year remaining on his contract.

Manchester United and Real Madrid have been linked, but a deal could prove difficult to do, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy wanting to do everything to keep the 29-year-old.

It has now been announced that Karim Benzema will leave Madrid this summer with the Spanish giants believed to be eyeing a move for the England captain.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano claimed that Spurs fans can relax for now, as any deal will be tough and will take time to complete.

"I wanted to clarify one thing, relax around Harry Kane, because I see many reports about Real Madrid as we had about Bayern, and Bayern are now not going for Kane. We heard many stories and of course about Man United but nothing will happen this week, next week. It will take time," he stated.

"Why? Because of Tottenham. I think many times in this Harry Kane situation, his name is everywhere, but many people forget about Tottenham. The player is a Tottenham legend.

"He has a contract and I think Daniel Levy was showing in a very clear way a few years ago, how strong he is in the negotiations for Harry Kane. He said no to a big amount of money from Manchester City. It was of course a few years ago, but the feeling remains that Daniel Levy will fight to keep Harry Kane at the club.

"He will try again to offer him a new contract. He will try to present the project with a new manager who is going to arrive very soon."

Should Kane stay at Spurs?

The £200k-per-week star is yet to win any major honours, and with Spurs in their current state, it seems unlikely that he will be able to compete for trophies next season should he stay.

Spurs failed to qualify for Europe, and are currently operating without a sporting director or a manager. It could take some time to rebuild the squad after a disappointing season, and Kane may have to move on to compete at the top level again.

Tottenham Hotspur Harry Kane

Given the difficulty in negotiating with Daniel Levy, as well as the fact that he reportedly wants to become the Premier League's leading goalscorer, means that staying for one more season before departing for free could suit Kane.

There will seemingly be a lot of interest in Kane next year if he does not extend his deal, and he could easily pick his next destination, whether in the Premier League or abroad. Staying for one more year may definitely suit him, but it is clear that in the long run, he should move on to a club more likely to win major trophies.

Ball heroics snatch improbable England win

Jake Ball defied cramp and sapping humidity to mark his one-day debut with record figures of 5 for 51, as England snatched an extraordinary 21-run victory in the first ODI against Bangladesh

The Report by Andrew Miller07-Oct-2016 England 309 for 8 (Stokes 101, Buttler 63, Duckett 60) beat Bangladesh 278 (Kayes 112, Shakib 79 Ball 5-51) by 21 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJake Ball defied cramp and sapping humidity to mark his one-day debut with record figures of 5 for 51, as England snatched an extraordinary 21-run victory in the first ODI against Bangladesh at Mirpur.Powered by a brilliant century from Imrul Kayes, and with Shakib Al Hasan providing experienced support in a fifth-wicket stand of 118, Bangladesh appeared to be marching up a mountainous run-chase of 310, and living up to their newly minted reputation as a tough nut to crack in one-day cricket. But then, with victory in sight, Bangladesh suffered a throwback to their fragile old days to squander their last six wickets for 17 runs in 39 balls. The collapse of their resolve mirrored that of the atmosphere at the National Stadium in Mirpur, where thousands of fans had put aside the inconvenience of a kilometre-wide exclusion zone to cheer on a side that has not lost a home ODI series for two years and counting. For more than 91 overs of the 97.5 in the match, the mood in the ground had been akin to a national celebration, as Imrul confirmed the richness of his current form with an astounding display of clean hitting, particularly through the leg side, to take command of what looked certain to be their highest successful run-chase against a senior Test nation. His first scoring shot was the most startling statement of intent of the whole match – a murderous second-ball pull over midwicket off Chris Woakes that embedded itself so deep in an advertising hoarding that an BCB official had to reach through the hole to retrieve it. On his watch, there could be only one winner, as he brought up his hundred from 105 balls with his 11th four, before passing the baton to Shakib, whose volley of five fours and six in 12 balls seemed to have torched the asking-rate.But then, with the requirement a trifling 39 from 52 balls with six wickets still in hand, Shakib suffered a debilitating bout of cramp in his fingers, and, in a jolt of realism that popped the fans’ party mood in a trice, Ball capitalised to stunning effort. The very delivery after receiving treatment from the physio, Shakib miscued a pull to David Willey at midwicket to depart for 79 – and one ball later, the stands were in full panic mode as Mosaddek Hossain was bowled off the splice by a perfect lifting nipbacker.Imrul was still in situ at this stage, but having also cramped up late in his innings, he urgently needed someone else to stay with him and keep the boundaries coming. The captain, Mashrafe Mortaza, was unable to be that man – he guiltily grazed a loose cut to the keeper as Adil Rashid ripped an illegible legbreak out of the rough, moments after planting a seed of doubt with his googly, and the game was as good as over in Rashid’s next over, when Imrul charged out of his crease in desperate need of a boundary, and was stumped off a wide as Rashid speared the ball out of his reach.Next to go was Shafiul Islam – the hero of Bangladesh’s two-wicket win in the 2011 World Cup – who was run out without scoring, and victory was duly sealed from the penultimate ball of Ball’s spell, as Taskin Ahmed grazed an edge through to Jos Buttler, England’s stand-in captain, whose typically powerful 63 from 38 balls had earlier lifted his side to an imposing total of 309 for 8.Jake Ball finished the match and ended with a five-for•Getty ImagesBall himself could barely stand by the end of the match, and he was rightly named as Man of the Match after becoming the first England bowler to claim five wickets on debut. However, the foundations of England’s victory were laid by Ben Stokes, who anchored their innings with his maiden ODI hundred, and Ben Duckett, the day’s second debutant, whose 60 from 78 balls was a vital and mature contribution to an agenda-setting stand of 153.Stokes made 101 from exactly 100 balls – a performance that might pale statistically compared to some of the masterful feats of run-making in England’s ranks in recent months. However, given the brutality of the conditions – the humidity was measured at one stage at 90% – and his previous fallibility against spin, most notably on the tour of Sri Lanka in 2014, it was a formidable performance. It also began in some adversity, as he and Duckett came together following a collapse of 3 for 21 in 31 balls. James Vince had once again looked fluent without entirely convincing in his 16 from 20 balls, and when Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow departed in quick succession, the latter to a third-ball run-out, England were 63 for 3 in the 13th over and in need of some shoring-up.Bangladesh used seven bowlers in all, with the third seamer, Taskin Ahmed, held back until the second half of the innings as Mashrafe leaned heavily and predictably on his quartet of slow men. Aside from their drip-drip accuracy, the speed with which they burned through their overs was especially telling. There was little opportunity to think between deliveries, but Stokes was in the mood to trust his instinct, particularly on the reverse sweep, with which he picked off four of his eight fours.Duckett, meanwhile, was quite content to play the anchorman. After his eye-popping scoring feats for Northamptonshire and the Lions this summer, this was all about bedding into the international arena, and he passed his first test with aplomb. His five fours were timely pressure releases, including one cute scoop over the wicketkeeper’s head off a Taskin short ball, but after reaching his half-century from 63 balls, his battery visibly went flat in the final minutes of his stay. He managed one run from his last nine deliveries before missing a leg-stump full-toss to be bowled round his pads.By the end of their fielding stint, however, Bangladesh were visibly tetchy after letting several crucial chances slip through their fingers – most tellingly, two lives in the space of five balls to Stokes, on 69 and 71 respectively – a low drill to mid-on and an ugly skew to deep cover.Inevitably, the man best placed to cash in in such a moment was Buttler, who arrived at the crease with eight overs remaining and a licence to go loco, but it was a tribute to the efforts of his team-mates higher up the order that he was initially forced to rein in his aggression. In fact, it wasn’t until the back end of the 47th over that Buttler flicked on the Beast Mode. After 25 runs, including a solitary boundary, from his first 26 deliveries, he signalled his change of tempo with consecutive sixes off Shakib, before two more fours and an inside-out six over extra cover off Shafiul completed a startling 33-ball fifty, which became 63 from 38 balls all told.It wasn’t apparent then, but that switch of tempo would prove to be the difference between the sides in the final analysis. That, of course, and the temperament required just to get the job done, come what may. Bangladesh have come a long, long way in the past couple of years, and their proud home record is still intact for now. But, much as was the case in their devastating collapse against India at the World T20, there remains a fragility at their core that can crack in an instant.

Chelsea "Pushing" For Major £52m Transfer

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea have been "really pushing" to sign Manuel Ugarte in the last 48 hours.

What's the latest on Chelsea and Ugarte?

The domestic season finally came to an end this weekend, putting the Blues out of their misery after a turgid campaign.

A 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge meant they finished way down in 12th on 44 points – their lowest-ever total in the Premier League era.

The good news, however, is that Mauricio Pochettino has now officially been announced as the club's new manager and so preparations can be made for some much-needed improvements.

No doubt, the Argentine will want some old faces out and so new blood in. And it seems as though Sporting CP midfielder Ugarte is his priority right now.

Indeed, while talking about the latest Chelsea transfer rumours on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed how things have been heating up in the last few days.

He said (3:32): "We know there is this fight with Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and PSG are offering creative solutions to Sporting Lisbon to find an agreement around the clause: €60 million (£52m).

"They are not triggering the clause but offering different payment terms, same amount and some players may be to be included. So 60 million euros but with different payment terms or players included.

“Let me mention one thing Chelsea in the last 24 to 48 hours are really, really pushing. They're trying to get it done.

"Chelsea are really trying to convince the player because the player is crucial in this story, but PSG are still there."

Who is Manuel Ugarte?

Still only 22 years of age, it seems the midfielder is on his way to a big club having shown his value to Sporting this term, with 47 outings in total – including six starts in the Champions League.

He has got the better of both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal at different times in European competitions this term as well, so it's no shock that he's caught the eye of some Premier League teams.

Liverpool had also been in the mix reportedly but Romano revealed over the weekend that they are no longer "in the race".

While that will help with Chelsea's plans, they still have Paris Saint-Germain tracking the player too and so it sounds as though Ugarte could end up making a £52m move to either England or France this summer.

Arsenal Now In Pole Position For "Unbelievable" £80m Star

Arsenal are now in pole position to sign Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo, and they are expected to reignite their interest in the summer, according to a report from Football Insider.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

The Arsenal board will hand Mikel Arteta a summer transfer budget of £150m, according to The Independent, and the manager's main priority will be bringing in a new midfielder, with West Ham United's Declan Rice emerging as the main target.

Given that West Ham are expected to demand £100m for Rice, the England international is affordable, however signing him would deplete a large chunk of the transfer budget, leaving Arteta with limited funds to strengthen elsewhere.

As such, the manager could look at bringing in a lower-cost alternative, with Southampton's Romeo Lavia "on the radar", according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs, while Caicedo is another potential option.

At the start of May, it was reported that the Gunners were set to make an offer for the Ecuadorian, and they seemingly have a good chance of landing him, with Football Insider now reporting they are in pole position for his signature.

Despite Chelsea also sharing a long-term interest in the Brighton star, it is the north London club that are currently leading the race, and they are expected to reignite their interest in the upcoming window.

The Seagulls are now resigned to losing the 21-year-old, who is valued at £70m – £80m, and they have already found a replacement in Bourssia Dortmund's Mahmoud Dahoud.

Should Arsenal sign Rice or Caicedo?

Caicedo could be as much as £30m cheaper than Rice, and there are indications he could be better than the Englishman, at least in a defensive sense, having made far more tackles in the Premier League this season.

The starlet has made the second-highest number of tackles in the entire top flight, while he has also recorded a superior pass-completion rate over the past year, averaging 88.4% per 90, compared to 86.3% from Rice.

Moises Caicedo

That said, the Ecuador international does have very limited attacking attributes, recording just one goal and one assist in all competitions this season, with the West Ham star amassing nine goal contributions.

As such, while Rice is likely to cost far more money, he is a more well-rounded player, and he is far more proven in the Premier League, having made over 200 appearances in the competition, while Caicedo has made just 42.

Westley's best leaves Worcestershire no place to hide

Tom Westley finished the day unbeaten on 238, his highest first-class score, to put Essex in total command at Chelmsford

“It’s not very often I bat a whole day,” said Tom Westley, as he mopped the sweat away from his reddened face and scratched a beard that may not have been there when he began this innings. He is, at the time of writing, unbeaten on 238 from 361 balls. His maiden double hundred arrived from 319 balls and provided Essex with the brunt of a dominant performance that saw the hosts hammer Worcestershire for 401 runs in the day.Talk of Tom Westley’s feats this season bring with it the caveat of Division Two cricket. And that is right up to a point: James Vince’s Test form may have put the feats of second-tier stylists into context. But Westley’s is a case that deserves to be heard. He is a player in the form of his life, with an appreciation of his batting that has matured from flaky to reliable without any loss of indulgence.Yesterday’s portion of his innings saw him bring up four figures in the Championship for the first time in his career. If that surprises somewhat, then factor in that this is the first season in which Westley has struck more than two red-ball centuries. And he only previously managed multiple centuries in 2012, both in Championship cricket. When he reached 100 today, from 182 balls – his fifth of 2016 – he became the third Essex batsman to score three Championship hundreds, alongside Alastair Cook and Dan Lawrence.Even as early as the start of May, Westley knew he was onto something: runs came better and quicker than they ever have. Even abject failure from now until the season’s end will leave him with his best season average. Currently, only Jonny Bairstow has more first-class runs in 2016.He cannot quite put his finger on what has given him this extra push, but he does credit age – at 27, this is his 10th season of first-class cricket – and a winter spent working with Andy Flower, Graham Thorpe and Gary Kirsten on the England Lions tour in the UAE. There were not too many adjustments but enough to allow him to embrace his leg-side game, without leaving him susceptible outside off.Having started the season well, with a notable century against Sri Lanka, he dipped through the middle but was buoyed by a one-day hundred and “quite a few fifties” to reassure himself that the purple patch was still going. Once the previous personal best of 185 was out of the way, thoughts turned to the double hundred.Westley’s ability to find midwicket is unparalleled in the domestic game and often sees him spoilt for company when new to the crease. In the corresponding fixture at New Road earlier this year, he was greeted with four midwicket fielders in the second innings after reeling off 125 in the first. Aided by a bottom hand that wraps all the way around his bat handle, he is able to punch and drive through the region with ease. Today, even his forward defence seemed to send the ball in that direction. Fittingly, on 199, he beat the three fielders stationed there for the boundary that took him to 203.The number of balls he sent in that particular direction made Chelmsford seem like a slanted pool table, as the majority of his 37 boundaries were collected from the midwicket rope. Try as they might, Worcestershire could not find the appropriate book or folded bit of paper to level things up.What success they had was erased by what followed. Cook nicked off for 66 after bringing up his second fifty of the season, which made way for a 213-run partnership between Westley and Ravi Bopara. When Worcestershire then took two wickets for one run, Ryan ten Doeschate ran them – and Westley – ragged to score his fifth Championship half-century in a row. A real salt-in-the-wounds partnership brought up 100 in 101 balls. If there was one blot for Essex, it was a 99 for Bopara. After 18 Championship innings, he is still without a century this season, despite six fifties including a previous season-best of 94. He looked as good as he has done, playing with time and panache – the sort of innings you expect from Bopara. In among the 16 crisp boundaries was a six off George Rhodes that cleared the sight screen and cannoned off a house at the Hayes Close end and into its garden. However, the pursuit of three figures is proving a struggle for a man weighed down by his sheer volume of nineties in the past three seasons.”You know I’m not going to get a hundred, right?” he joked to Westley, as the landmark loomed. A short ball from Jack Shantry was smashed to square leg for four, to take him to 99. The very next delivery, Bopara plopped forward, perhaps looking for a single into the off side, and edge through to Ross Whiteley. “He was right,” remarked a sympathetic Westley. Should Bopara not complete the journey to three figures with his remaining innings, it will be the first time since 2004 that he has not scored at least one first class hundred in a season.
