Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and the 10 players Liverpool are most likely to sign in the 2023 summer transfer window

The Reds are expecting a busy window as Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his defence and midfield significantly

There's no denying it; Liverpool are set for a busy summer transfer window. The disappointment of this season, in which the Reds have somehow managed to miss out on Champions League qualification, has focused minds at Anfield, with significant moves expected in the close season.

Departures have already been confirmed. Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all leave on free transfers, while others could follow, as Jurgen Klopp looks to build a squad capable of challenging for major honours once more.

That means signings, and good ones at that. Midfield is an obvious target area, but don't be surprised to see Klopp looking to reinforce his defence too, given some of the struggles of key personnel this term.

Links with potential targets, as they always are with Liverpool, have been plentiful. Here are the players most likely to end up at Anfield this summer…

  • Getty

    Alexis Mac Allister (Brighton)

We'll start with the obvious. Mac Allister has, following the decision to walk away from a potential deal for Jude Bellingham, emerged as Liverpool's top summer target, the Reds impressed by the Argentina World Cup winner's superb form for Brighton.

It is understood that the 24-year-old would be keen on a move to Merseyside, although Chelsea, Manchester United and even Manchester City have also been linked. Anfield sources have dismissed recent speculation that a £70 million ($87m) deal is close to being agreed, but it is clear that Mac Allister is high on Liverpool's list, and it would be no surprise to see this transfer completed.

    Mason Mount (Chelsea)

Another player to have been repeatedly linked with Liverpool in recent months is Mount, the Chelsea and England attacking midfielder. The 24-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract, and talks over an extension are understood to have stalled some time ago.

Liverpool are long-time admirers, and have received encouragement that Mount would be open to the idea of moving to Anfield. Arsenal and Manchester United have, though, also been linked, and recent reports have since suggested that a move to Old Trafford would be Mount's preferred choice if a deal could be struck.

Regardless, much will hinge on how hard Chelsea and new manager Mauricio Pochettino push to keep their academy graduate, or indeed how much they demand for the player should they look to sell up.

  • Getty

    Ryan Gravenberch (Bayern Munich)

Having been linked with Gravenberch in the summers of both 2020 and 2022, Liverpool have completed the hat-trick this year. The Dutch international has endured a disappointing first season at Bayern Munich, and reports suggest the 21-year-old is eager to move in search of more regular football.

Representatives from the Reds are believed to have met with the talented midfielder's father back in March, though the mood music since has suggested that Bayern, understandably, are reluctant to sell the former Ajax man after only one season in Bavaria. Any move may depend on Gravenberch's desire to make life difficult for the Bundesliga giants.

  • Jurrien Timber (Ajax)

With Trent Alexander-Arnold revelling in a new hybrid full-back/midfield role, finding defenders capable of covering for the England international will be key this summer. And in that sense, Ajax and Netherlands star Timber fits the bill.

His ability to play as both a right-back and a centre-back, his pace and his ball-playing ability make the 21-year-old an interesting option, with reports in the Netherlands suggesting that contact has already been made by Liverpool.

A move, however, could depend on what happens with both Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, neither of whom have had the best of seasons, and both of whom could have opportunities to move in the summer.

O susto acordou o time do Ceará, que respondeu abrindo o marcador.

A bola passou perto e voltou a assustar Diogo Silva.

Expectations rise for overqualified underdogs

New Zealand have arrived in England but they are determined not to make any ripples. At least not yet. For all their on-field panache, it is New Zealand’s style to keep things low key. Then again, with expectations around the team as high as they have ever been, that may prove difficult. Even on a rainy weekday at Lord’s, two weeks before the start of the Test series, cameras and microphones jostled for space in front of Mike Hesson and BJ Watling. The squad, missing a handful of IPL participants, arrived a few days ago and have been getting acclimatised even as England begin the inquiries into their failure to beat West Indies. When New Zealand last played in these parts, they were the side attempting to put a period of internecine strife behind them; they lost 2-0 but, under Brendon McCullum’s captaincy, are unbeaten in six series since, winning four.Last year was New Zealand’s best ever in Tests but they then scaled another peak by reaching their first World Cup final. Defeat to Australia might have prevented the fairytale finale but, as Hesson conceded, their success has only left New Zealand’s fans wanting more.Mike Hesson and BJ Watling talk to the media at Lord’s•Getty Images

“There’s definitely expectation, which we probably haven’t had a lot of,” Hesson said. “We found that out in the World Cup – if we won a game, if we didn’t win it well we got criticism, whereas in the past we were just happy winning. There’s a growing expectation that has happened over the past couple of years, we’ve got more following at home and an expectation that we perform over here.”For 18 months we’ve played good cricket, six series in a row Test-wise … We’re a developing side but we manage to play good cricket. The country have got behind us in all forms of cricket, we’ve ridden the wave really, the public support has been amazing.”New Zealand are perhaps the least likely side in world cricket to make any big statements but their unshowy, methodical approach has nevertheless won them many admirers. In the week of the UK’s general election, there was perhaps a politically astute message in Hesson’s refusal to make bold claims about his side’s ability to win a Test series in England for the first time in 16 years: under promise, over deliver.”It would be another step forward,” he said. “We’ve won four Test matches here in our history so to win a series would be huge. We never get too far ahead of ourselves, we’re pretty boring in that respect, just deal with the next day and do it as best we can. We’ve got a pretty well grounded group.”It’s just another stepping stone, really, for us. We’ve had some really good achievements away from home, winning in England… Well, let’s start at Lord’s, winning at Lord’s is a huge thing. In 1999 the guys that were part of that, it was a big part of their careers. We’ve got a lot of work to do in the next couple of weeks to prepare us for that first day.”

Eleven fit for New Zealand XI

New Zealand have brought former U-19 batsman Will Young to provide cover for their depleted squad. Young, who plays for Central Districts, will act as 12th man during the tour match against Somerset.
With Martin Guptill unable to play due to an injury sustained while scoring 227 for Derbyshire last week, New Zealand will play the three young bowlers – seamers Jacob Duffy and Ben Wheeler and left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner – who are not part of the official Test squad at Taunton.
New Zealand XI: BJ Watling (capt), Doug Bracewell, Mark Craig, Jacob Duffy, Tom Latham, Luke Ronchi, Hamish Rutherford, Mitchell Santner, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, Ben Wheeler.

Those preparations will be necessarily disjointed, with five members of New Zealand’s likely Test side currently at the IPL and unlikely to arrive in England until a few days before the Lord’s match begins, on May 21. For this week’s tour match against Somerset, only 11 players are fit, which at least makes selection straightforward. Martin Guptill will not play, due to a side strain, but Hesson hopes to have him back for the match at Worcestershire starting on May 14.Watling will captain the side, in the absence of McCullum, who is in India along with Kane Williamson, Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Matt Henry. Those players are trusted to be ready to make the switch from T20 to Test cricket and have Dukes balls with them to allow for appropriate practice during the IPL. “We’ve become more used to the fact it’s part of the landscape,” Hesson said, pragmatically.Hesson was also diplomatic about New Zealand only being granted two Tests in the English spring. The last time they played as many as four was in 1999, when a 2-1 victory left England bottom the rankings; should they win on this occasion they would go above their hosts, pushing England down to fifth.”I think some of it’s been performance, we’ve been down the pecking order in terms of our ranking,” Hesson said. “England obviously have two tours so we normally get the early one and we tend to be a bit of an entree to the Ashes. But you have to earn the right for those extended series and you do that over a period of time, so that’s something we’re looking to do.”English cricket may habitually – and lazily – take the Ashes is its barometer but New Zealand increasingly look overqualified as underdogs. While England underwent a trial by white-ball cricket over the winter, New Zealand won a legion of new followers; as England return from the Caribbean buffeted by another embarrassment, New Zealand are waiting, courteously, to take another step on their own upward journey. Just don’t expect a comment about the opposition.”Haven’t paid a heck of a lot of attention, to be fair, we’ve been worrying about our own backyard,” Hesson said of England’s recent struggles. “We’ve scouted them and we’ve spent a bit of time studying methods and techniques but we haven’t studied their psyche.”Watling put forward a similar line and, despite New Zealand being bowled out for 68 at Lord’s in 2013, it seems likely England will be the side wrestling with their demons. “We’ll worry about our own thing,” Watling said. “We obviously came here two years ago and didn’t have the greatest of series. We’ll be looking to improve on that effort and learn from those mistakes. These two first warm-up games will be crucial in terms of getting loads up for the bowlers and getting the batsmen used to the conditions. We’ll look to carry on our good form in Test cricket.”

Tuskers, Eagles to clash in final

Mid West Rhinos survived a middle-order stumble to beat Mountaineers by three wickets, denying the latter a spot in the final of the Pro50 Championship. Mountaineers, who were two points adrift of Mashonaland Eagles, needed a win over Rhinos and a Matabeleland Tuskers’ victory over Eagles to climb into second and a place in the final, but a loss ended their run. Tuskers and Eagles will now clash in the Pro50 final despite the latter’s 74-run loss on Tuesday.Rhinos had Mountaineers under pressure right from the start of the game as their pacers Michael Chinouya and Tendai Chisoro reduced Mountaineers to 83 for 7. From 102 for 8, Mountaineers managed to post 211 only through the 109-run partnership between Innocent Kaia and No. 10 batsman Tapiwa Mufudza. Kaia took on the scoring responsibilities, and brought up his maiden List A hundred, finishing with 101 off 144 deliveries with 12 fours and a six.The foundation for Rhinos’ 212-run chase was set up by the top order, with knocks from Bradley Wadlan (50) and Prince Masvaure leading the way. Three quick strikes by legspinner Natsai M’shangwe saw them stumble from 147 for 2 to 189 for 6 but Masvaure’s unbeaten 68 held the innings together and they achieved the target in the 36th over.Brian Chari’s 125-ball 115 and three wickets each from Brian Vitori and John Nyumbu were the stand-out performances in Tuskers’ 74-run win against Eagles.Chari’s 115, his maiden List A hundred, helped Tuskers post an imposing 279 for 5. Chari’s 137-run second-wicket stand with Nkosana Mpofu (50) set the base for Tuskers’ innings and they were given a boost by Luke Jongwe’s unbeaten 20-ball 37. In reply, Eagles kept losing wickets at regular intervals and had lost half their side by the 32nd over for 132 runs. Nyumbu and Vitori then ran through the rest of the line-up as Eagles’ innings folded for 205 in 43 overs.

Supreme Court to hear BCCI clause amendments

The Supreme Court will examine in detail the BCCI clause that made a significant change allowing “administrators” to have a “commercial interest” in the IPL and the Champions League T20

Ugra: No defence for officials not acting on crucial information

The Supreme Court will examine in detail the BCCI clause that made a significant change allowing “administrators” to have a “commercial interest” in the IPL and the Champions League T20. As part of hearings in the 2013 IPL corruption case, the two-judge bench of Justice TS Thakur and Justice FM Kalifullah will listen to arguments around the validity of the clause when the hearings resume on Tuesday afternoon.Speaking as part of the first of two ‘interventions’ in the IPL corruption case, Rajeev Dhawan, counsel appearing for former BCCI president IS Bindra, said clause 6.2.4 was “responsible for the mess we [referring to Indian cricket] are in since 2008.” It needed to be examined more closely in the court, he said because cricket, once described as “the greatest game on earth” was now, “going to the dogs.”When the issue of examining clause 6.2.4 was first raised, N Srinivasan’s counsel Kapil Sibal argued that Bindra was an “interested” party in the original litigant Cricket Association of Bihar’s (CAB) case against his client and the BCCI and therefore it should not be permitted. Dhawan argued that he was going to tackle the subject on three counts: the argument of autonomy, conflict of interest and “where do we go from here.”Dhawan also pointed out that the BCCI had both “a commercial and public interest” and said, “it can’t be that the commercial interest should dominate over the public interest.” Dhawan called the clause a “bombshell” for the parties concerned. The clause allowing BCCI administrators to have a commercial interest in IPL and Champions League T20 was only amended after the first season of the IPL. The Chennai Super Kings franchise, owned by N Srinivasan’s India Cements, thus came into existence and participated in the first IPL season well before the BCCI constitution was amended in September 2008.The bench said that there was a choice: either the court could itself rule on the “validity” of the clause or it could be studied by a new committee to extend its example and precedent to other sports bodies. “We can’t gloss over 6.2.4. The BCCI has to defend the amendment,” Justice Thakur said and the bench decided to hear the matter in its entirety on Tuesday. The clause in question

The BCCI had amended clause 6.2.4 of the regulations for players, team officials, umpires and administrators on September 25, 2008, shortly after the first season of the IPL. Before the amendment the clause read: “No administrator shall have, directly or indirectly, any commercial interest in the matches and events conducted by the board.” After the change on September 25, 2008, it read: “No administrator shall have directly or indirectly any commercial interest in any of the events of the BCCI, excluding IPL, Champions League and Twenty20.”
There is a possibility that arguments around clause 6.2.4 could also extend to another key amendment in the BCCI’s constitution referred to as clause 15 that ended the rotational system of presidentship under the argument of a “meritocratic” leadership of the Board. It is the amendment that will allow Srinivasan to stand for election from the East Zone though his three-year term as president from the South has ended.

The hearings in the Supreme Court today opened with arguments by Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra and IPL COO Sundar Raman before Dhawan made his first arguments which will conclude on Tuesday.IPL COO Sundar Raman, represented by  counsel V Giri argued that he was appearing in court to defend the Mudgal committee’s findings against him which covered two topics: the first being in contact with Vindoo Dara Singh, who was termed as the “contact” of a bookie and was arrested along CSK official Gurunath Meiyappan. The second was about not responding to information about betting by IPL owners five months before the first arrests of IPL players on May 16, 2013.Raman said he was merely an employee of the BCCI and had no commercial stake in the IPL and could not, “decline any calls that come to me,” including those of Vindoo who was described as a “celebrity.” The counsel said Raman could not have acted without evidence and doing so would have put his job in “jeopardy.”With reference to the information passed onto him by YP Singh, head of the ICC Anti Corruption and Security Unit, about rumours of betting by two owners in the IPL, Raman said, YP Singh had not given him anything “in writing” and that it had not been “actionable”  information. The bench responded by asking why Raman had not followed up on the information: “You knew [the] role of officials in betting, you did nothing despite the knowledge, was it like putting your job at stake?”When argued that there had been no evidence, Justice Thakur asked Raman’s counsel, “What material did you expect? Did you think these people keep cash books and ledgers? Someone calls and says, ABC is betting, what will you ask? You will say you need actionable information?”Kalifullah then asked whether Raman had not deemed it right to register a complaint with his employers itself to begin with. “When the complaint was about betting, did it not occur to you that you should gather more information and seek guidance from anyone else in BCCI? Why did you not do it? Why did you not put it down in writing in a report to BCCI?” Kallifullah said to Raman’s counsel, “You have done nothing. You are only looking after celebrities and just watching the fun.”Kundra’s counsel Shekhar Naphade argued for nearly an hour that action could only be taken against his client under the BCCI rules. He argued that as the Mudgal committee had not been formed under the BCCI rules, the court could not go by its findings and that his client should be allowed to cross question the report. Justice Thakur then said to him, “You are saying that even if there are problems [in Indian cricket], the court should not intervene.”The hearings resume on Tuesday afternoon.

Middlesex latest club to ditch nickname

Middlesex have dropped their one-day nickname in a growing trend of counties reverting to using solely their traditional name.Middlesex will no longer be known as the “Panthers” – the nickname adopted in 2009. Their original nickname “Crusaders” was dropped amid unsubstantiated rumours of complaints from the Muslim community. The beginning of Twenty20 in 2003 saw every county adopt a nickname, some more loosely-associated than others. Many of these have been changed but the last few seasons have seen several abandoned completely.Somerset were the first county to ditch their second name; “Sabers” was scratched in 2009. Since then, Surrey – once “Lions”, then “Brown Caps”, then back again – Glamorgan – ex-“Dragons” – Gloucestershire – no-longer “Gladiators” – and Hampshire – originally the “Hawks”, they became the “Royals” in a celebrated tie-in with Rajasthan IPL franchise – have reverted back to their single name in one-day cricket.”When we launched our one-day Panthers brand back in 2009, there was a strong desire for each of the counties to have a vibrant and dynamic one-day name and image,” Middlesex chief executive, Vinny Codrington, said.”A lot has changed in Middlesex cricket over the last five years and we at the county club have been and continue to work tirelessly with the Middlesex Cricket Board to engage with and immerse ourselves into the many cricket communities that reside within each of the seventeen regional boroughs that populate the county of Middlesex.”We therefore felt that one clear, consistent and immediately recognisable brand would offer greater clarity and assist us in terms of our awareness and recognition within and around the county and further afield as this work continues at pace.”We are looking forward to being known now simply as ‘Middlesex CCC’, which to anyone in the game of cricket is a name that immediately invokes feelings of heritage, success and respect – values which we, as a club, pride ourselves on.”The club’s mascot – Pinky the Panther – will survive despite the nickname being dropped. The club’s junior membership will also continue to carry the “Panthers” moniker.Several eyebrow-raising nicknames still remain. Derbyshire have changed theirs three times – the quite bizarre “Scorpions” until 2005 and the “Phantoms” until 2010 before settling on “Falcons” after the Peregrine falcon nesting in Derby cathedral.Northamptonshire are the Steelbacks, Durham are now the Jets after a sponsorship deal with Emirates Airlines and Lancashire the “Lightning” – presumably due to the poor Manchester weather. Worcestershire took on a weather-theme to rename their one-day side the “Rapids” in light-hearted reference to the floods common at New Road. Two nicknames can claim to be legitimate – Warwickshire and Leicestershire have traditionally been referred to as the Bears and Foxes respectively.
