Manchester United would be taking a gamble by opting for Moussa Dembele as Lukaku replacement

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United have lined up Lyon striker Moussa Dembele as a replacement for want-away striker Romelu Lukaku if the Belgian leaves Old Trafford this summer.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Lukaku could be on his way out of Old Trafford after a rather underwhelming campaign last season; the Belgium international managed just 15 goals in 45 appearances.

It was claimed that Serie A giants Inter were keen on taking Lukaku to Italy, but that their bid for the striker was turned down by United because it did not meet the Red Devils’ valuation.

Now, Sky Sports suggest that Dembele will be on United’s shortlist for a replacement were Lukaku to complete his move away this summer.

A major gamble

Having joined Fulham at the age of 16, Dembele quickly became a regular with the Cottagers as his knack for goal-scoring came to the fore. The Frenchman’s prolific campaign in the 2015/2016 season saw him earn a move to Scottish champions Celtic, and the centre-forward certainly made his mark there.

But despite having a reasonable pedigree in front of goal at both Celtic and with Lyon last year, there are obvious question marks to a possible move to Old Trafford for Dembele. At the age of 23, the France U21 international has played for three high-profile clubs but hasn’t managed to put down roots, causing trouble and chaos off the pitch.

On it, he can be frustratingly inconsistent and went through a drought of scoring just two goals in 11 games by early January and came in for heavy criticism. It’s the kind of streaky nature to his game that mirrors Lukaku himself; the Belgian would often go through an impressive hot period before going cold in front of goal.

United need a reliable number nine who can be there consistently over a course of the season; Dembele – valued at £24.3m by Transfermarkt – has yet to prove that, and would represent a major gamble were the Red Devils decide to pursue a move for the 23-year-old.

Wolves fans in shock after Laurie Dalrymple is sacked

[ad_pod ]

Wolves have sacked managing director Laurie Dalrymple from his role after a fall-out with the board, claim Express & Star.

Departing the club just says before they jet off to China for a pre-season tour, Dalrymple’s shock exit comes after his relationship with Fosun group deteriorated so much that his position became untenable.

And reacting to the news on Twitter, supporters of the Midlands outfit seemed to be in absolute dismay after one of the club’s key figures left Molineux.

One fan claimed that Wolves were now in serious trouble, blaming the situation for a lack of activity in the transfer market.

A further supporter said it had left them hugely concerned, suggesting that Dalrymple had been a sensible voice. Another individual slammed it as a crazy decision whilst one tweeter said it didn’t sit well.

His exit comes as somewhat of a surprise given what he’d achieved with the club. After being made managing director three years ago, he was able to negotiate record-breaking kit and sponsorship deals with Adidas, W88 and ManBetX.

Following the news, Jeff Shi will assist with the day-to-day running of things.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Tottenham: Dani Ceballos could be the perfect man to cure Eriksen woes

This summer will be massive for a lot of clubs in the footballing world. Across Europe Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid all have a lot to do, whilst domestically the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal have their work cut out, but Tottenham arguably have the biggest job of them all.

That is mostly down to the fact that it will be the first transfer window since January 2018 that the Lilywhites actually open their wallet. Don’t get this wrong, the lack of spending is all the club’s fault, but a massive window could remedy that, and what a signing Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos would be to kick it off.

The rumours of the Spaniard being brought in have surfaced via Spanish outlet AS and it’s hard to argue that he wouldn’t be a great signing for the North London outfit considering how well he’s been playing for Spain in the ongoing U21 European Championships.

Yet according to the story from AS, Zinedine Zidane does not completely trust the midfield man and would sanction an exit for the impressive 22-year-old. It would undoubtedly be a good move for Tottenham too, especially seeing as the £27m rated ace, as per Transfermarkt, could help them fill the Christian Eriksen void should the Dane leave the club.

There have been fears for a while that Eriksen could leave and it came out that before Tottenham’s Champions League final defeat that the Dane even cleared his London house as he was so convinced that he’d be leaving. It may be less clear now, as a Real Madrid move has fallen through, although with Juventus and Manchester United still interested, anything can happen, claims via The Mirror.

It’s really not hard to see why the Spaniard would fit so well too, as his stats speak for themselves. The Spanish ace scored three La Liga goals despite playing 90 minutes just five times in the competition He’s as added to that with two goals and two assists in three group stage games in the U21 international competition, so there really is no doubting he could star for Spurs.

Tottenham fans, would you be happy to see Ceballos sign this summer? Let us know!

Tottenham: Kyle Walker-Peters could replace Kieran Trippier next season

Kieran Trippier’s future at Tottenham Hotspur looks far from assured at the moment, however, that could give Kyle Walker-Peters the opportunity he needs to establish himself in Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team.

The transfer rumour mill has been spinning vigorously when it comes down to Trippier, as the Independent have carried claims that Spurs are expecting a bid from Juventus in the near future and are prepared to accept an offer in the region of £25million should the Old Lady make an approach.

So, for all intents and purposes and for the benefit of this article, let’s assume that the England international is sold and leaves Tottenham with a decision to make. Do they look to sign a new right-back or do they look to promote from within?

Hiroki Sakai has been recently linked with a move to the New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however, being 29-years-old does not work in the Japan international’s favour as it is thought to go against everything Pochettino and Spurs are looking for in new recruits – the younger the better moving forward supposedly.

So, with Serge Aurier having hardly filled himself with glory in the opportunities he has had during his two-year stint at the club, could that mean Walker-Peters gets a chance to shine? Maybe.

According to a report by Football.London, the young right-back is set to meet with Pochettino about his future at the club next month in discussions that could shape what happens to the 22-year-old further down the line.

But, surely it would not be a surprise to see him in the line-up next season? He did get a chance in the first-team last year and did rather well with all things considered – he made a rather glaring error against Barcelona allowing Ousmane Dembele to score but perhaps the occasion got to him? He did recover well though in the game after putting the gaffe behind him.

According to his stats by WhoScored, in the six appearances he made in the Premier League, he averaged 1.2 tackles per game and 0.7 interceptions. Compared to Trippier’s 2.5 tackles and 0.9 interceptions in 27 top-flight matches, that’s not too bad.

Both men are attack-minded as well and Walker-Peters continued to show that he could become a threat in the future with the right development as he managed to provide three assists with an average of 1.2 key passes and 1.5 successful dribbles per outing.

There is no denying that the 22-year-old is still a diamond in the rough and Pochettino will need to work his magic with him for a little bit to get the best out of him, however, he could perhaps be the replacement Spurs will need should Trippier leave this summer, or even challenge him for his place should the England international remain at the club instead.

Tottenham fans, do you think Walker-Peters has what it takes to step up to the next level? Let us know your thoughts below!

The Chalkboard: Bielsa burnout is back to ruin Leeds’ season

[ad_pod ]

For months Leeds fans may have laughed off talk of the famed ‘Bielsa burnout’ as they were flying at the top of the Championship.

The premise is that Marcelo Bielsa’s style of play proves too physically demanding for a team to continue high levels of performance throughout an entire season.

Seemingly avoiding the burnout

Leeds had seemed to escape the dreaded fatigue that comes with playing under Bielsa this term, as they seemed to constantly dig in to score late goals and secure themselves points late in games.

Many mistook these late surges as evidence to disprove the fact that Bielsa’s teams wilt with tiredness. However, this phenomenon isn’t to be studied throughout 90 minutes of a game, it is about the team’s capability to continue playing up to standard throughout a full season.

Fans of the Yorkshire club were quick to tell everybody that they knew better, the Bielsa burnout is a myth and the club will storm through and be promoted to the Premier League with no problem at all.

Perhaps the club should have heeded the warnings of Ander Herrera who played under Bielsa at Athletic Bilbao, when he said (via iNews): “I can’t lie to you, in the last months we couldn’t even move. We had five games to play in the league and were in two cup finals and I think we lost all of them.

“Our legs said ‘stop’. We used to play always with the same players and were not at our best in the finals. We were a completely different team than we had been before.”

Happening before our eyes

It’s happening to Leeds right in front of us. Since the halfway point of the season, they have lost nine of their 20 Championship games but their storming start to the campaign left them in a strong position to be promoted, their league position blinding fans to what was really happening.

The Yorkshire outfit haven’t been the same team since Christmas but it has taken many fans until their automatic promotion hopes were dashed to admit it.

Losing their last two games against 10-man Wigan after leading early on and being comfortably dispatched by Brentford shows the regression Leeds have gone through in recent weeks.

On top of that the players can’t hold themselves together whilst playing this rigorous style, Gjanni Alioski had to come off against Brentford whilst Liam Cooper struggled throughout the match.

The numbers don’t lie, Leeds’ form has deserted them at the worst possible time and it is no coincidence that their players look dead on their feet late on in the season after running their socks off under Bielsa for over 40 games.

Did we make the right call? Liverpool fans discuss the failed swoop for Nabil Fekir

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans on Twitter have been busy debating the failed swoop for Nabil Fekir from back in the summer, with the main topic of conversation being whether or not the club made the right decision in backing out of the deal.

The France international was on the verge of becoming a Liverpool player, before an issue concerning his knee arose after the medical had already taken place – as a result, the Reds pulled out of the £53m deal amid doubts over Fekir’s medical results.

Has Alisson been Liverpool’s most important signing of the season? Check out the video below to find out why Jurgen Klopp thinks so…

After Philippe Coutinho had departed the club, the Lyon midfielder was seen as the Brazilian’s replacement and the man to add some much needed creativity to Jurgen Klopp’s midfield, only for no other similar type of player to arrive through the door.

This lack of creativity is still evident in the team even now, which has sparked the debate amongst Liverpool supporters as to whether or not the club were right in avoiding the risk. The majority appear to be in support of the eventual decision…
