Celtic closing in on Benfica’s Jota

Celtic have enjoyed a lung-busting start to the new season but life under Ange Postecoglou came crashing back down to earth with a bang on Sunday.

The Hoops endured a dismal defeat in the Old Firm derby and they are now left chasing the pack again in the league.

What’s the word?

Postecoglou’s response to losing to the club’s biggest rivals last weekend is to strengthen the club’s attack.

Indeed, after failing to score versus Rangers, that decision does contain an element of sense.

Celtic have been trying to sign Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis but while that deal grows quieter, another becomes louder.

That’s because the Bhoys are on the verge of signing Benfica winger, Jota, on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The news was reported by journalist Stephen McGowan who took to Twitter late on Sunday to note the following 12-word update on the transfer: “Celtic medical for Benfica winger Jota on Monday. Loan with buy option.”

Supporters buzzing

It’s rare a manager admits their mistakes but after Celtic slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Ibrox last weekend, that’s what Postecoglou did.

The Australian fielded Kyogo Furuhashi on the left with Odsonne Edouard through the middle. However, when the Frenchman missed a golden opportunity to score from just a matter of yards out in the first half, it looked like the wrong call.

That was backed up by the instant impact Kyogo had when he moved into the centre following Edouard’s withdrawal.

Speaking at full-time, the boss said he should have started the Japanese frontman through the middle from the off but admitted a lack of wide options with James Forrest out injured made his decision for him.

Therefore, by signing Jota this summer, it could allow Celtic to play Kyogo as the lone striker on a more regular basis.

He’s started his career in Glasgow with a bang, scoring seven goals in his first nine outings, including a wonderful hat-trick against Dundee. The Japan international has become an instant fan favourite so to see him in positions where he’ll score more goals will only delight the Parkhead faithful.

Though, the arrival of Jota has more positives than that. The 22-year-old is a wily and tricky character, cut from the same cloth as Israeli attacker Liel Abada.

He only scored two goals on loan at Real Valladolid in La Liga last term but produced 0.9 dribbles per match from just seven starts. Given his limited amount of football, that’s a pretty handy total.

A left-footed player, he’d have the potential to offer a similar threat to the one Ryan Christie caused when he played on that flank against Dundee. The Scot caused havoc with his crossing from the wing and registered three assists.

Considering Jota’s lack of experience, he might not hit the ground running immediately, but if he gives Kyogo more of a license in attack, supporters will be delighted to see him pull on the famous green and white hoops.

Sehwag and Gambhir wrest initiative

India managed to walk away with the honours, thanks to a special two-wicket over from Anil Kumble and fifties by Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir

The Galle Test continued to amaze. The third day featured periods of heavyattrition, heavy artillery, then some attrition and some more artillery, and two wickets in two overs to cap it off. India managed to walk away with thehonours, thanks to a special two-wicket over from Anil Kumble andfifties by Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. Despite MahelaJayawardene’s calm innings and two late strikes by Sri Lanka, India moved towards a comfortable lead on a pitch that could be at its worst in the fourth innings. After India had secured a 37-run lead in the first innings, it was Sehwagwho drove home the advantage, continuing in familiar vein: he hitthe first ball he faced for a boundary. Nuwan Kulasekara got a repeat dosefour times in his four overs. Muttiah Muralitharan, introduced in the sixthover, was swept for a four in his first over and a six in his second.Ajantha Mendis, brought on in the 17th over, was cut for a four in hissecond over.Only Chaminda Vaas, who was faced mostly by Gambhir, escaped the treatment. Finally it took a special catch – fast and high, taken at short cover – by Tillakaratne Dilshan to dismiss Sehwag.Gambhir, who had made a slow start, then quietly took the front seat.He had scored two runs off 20 when Sehwag had 22 off 15, but when Sehwag gotout for 50, Gambhir had 39 off 65. His handling of Murali was exceptional:no more getting suckered out of the crease, he was almost always right tothe pitch of the ball. He slog-swept Murali, cover-drove him, and thencharged him straight down to reach his second fifty of the match – a first for him, as with Sehwag, who for the first time scored a half-century in a match where he had scored a hundred already.Post-tea, Sri Lanka came back, like India in the first session, andtightened the screws. Twenty-three runs came off the next 11 overs – thelast ball of which was a special one. Mendis’ offbreak startedoutside leg stump in the air, drifted further away, and broke big to beatGambhir’s pad and take the off stump. Sachin Tendulkar and Dravid attacked in response. Tendulkar, especially, stepped out and also employed the vertical sweep to the spinners. It would not be an overstatement to say that Dravid was helped out of hisbad patch by the batsmen around him. At one point, 2.3 overs afterGambhir’s dismissal, he had faced just 15 balls in the ten preceding overs, and 48 out of the 22.3 overs he had been out in the middle for. When Gambhir got out, he hadfaced Mendis’ three previous overs. But that Dravid was much more comfortable was evident from two cuts for four through extra cover in one over, and a lofted shot he struck stepping out to Murali.Smart statsVirender Sehwag’s 50 in the second innings made it the second time in his career when he had two 50-plus scores in the same Test. The first came in Adelaide earlier this year.Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir followed up their 167-run stand with a partnership of 90. In all, India’s openers have managed two 50-plus stands, one being over 100, in seven Tests; the current pair has done it twice. Both Sehwag and Gambhir scored fifties in both innings: it’s only the second time that an Indian opening pair has done so in Tests. The first in Mumbai in 1978 was similar, with three fifties and a double-hundred.Jayawardene’s 86 was his 11th 50-plus knock in 18 innings in Galle; it also brought his average at the ground down marginally, from 99.21 to 98.33.Harbhajan Singh’s 6 for 102 is his best figures away from home, and his first five-wicket haul overseas in over two years. The highest fourth-innings total in Galle is England’s 210 for 9 in 2003, when they held on to a draw. Sri Lanka have won only three out of 32 Tests in which they have chased a total over 200, while India have lost only five out of 69 Tests in which they have defended a target over 200.However, just when India came close to seeming clear favourites, Vaasstruck with an offcutter, drawing Tendulkar out and getting an edge. In thenext over, Murali got a decision, via review, against Dravid thatleft the batsman irate. It was not, perhaps, the actual final decision that wasobjectionable – the offbreak pitched outside off and would have takenmiddle – but the inordinate amount of time taken by Jayawardene to go forthe review. Two wickets had fallen in two overs, the Galle Test had turnedonce more, and India were not the dominant side anymore. The first session, too, saw its fair share of twists and turns. It wasslow, but just as intense and gripping as the others, and perhapsmore crucial. Almost every over – before Mahela started farming strikefollowing a double-strike – featured a loud shout, or an edge that fellshort, or a sharp spinning delivery that missed everything. Kumble andHarbhajan bowled 24 successive overs in tandem, and but for a three-overspell by Ishant Sharma in the final session yesterday, they bowled 68overs at a stretch. Harbhajan took his unbroken spell to 37 overs, andthen started bowling immediately from the other end.Jayawardene, despite back-to-back wickets for Kumble and Harbhajan, kept SriLanka in the game. He was not affected by the spinning ball, thevariations in the bowling, and all that happened around him. There wereno free runs on offer; but he was cool enough to not try to hit himself out of thesituation. He managed a total of five boundaries in the session – MalindaWarnapura had hit four in one over yesterday. And once Prasanna andVaas fell in consecutive overs, he farmed the strike, getting goodsupport from Kulasekara as he did.In keeping with the narrative of the match, just when Sri Lankaseemed to have got the upper hand, another turnaround followed, with Kumble making his first impact of the series. Jayawardene, 14 short ofa deserved century, edged Kumble to Dinesh Karthik, and the game was back inthe balance. Although Jayawardene and Kulasekara frustrated India for 17.1overs, India had managed to keep the partnership down to 36 runs. Kumble andHarbhajan then proceeded to remove the next two – taking the last threewickets in seven balls – to get the lead, the importance of which, on thispitch, will surely be disproportionately higher than the actual number it consistsof.

Celtic: Hoops weighing up James McCarthy move

Celtic are discussing a move for former Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy, according to reliable reporter Alan Nixon.

The Lowdown: McCarthy without a club

McCarthy is currently a free agent after his deal at Selhurst Park expired last month.

The midfielder, capable of playing in a defensive, central or advanced role, has been linked with the Hoops over the last 12 months.

Reports last November suggested Celtic were ready to make their move in January, whereas a story in April suggested that Newcastle United were looking to pip the Hoops to a deal.

The Irishman, who Roy Hodgson described as ‘incredible’ last year, appears to be back on Celtic’s radar, according to Nixon.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-11/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Nixon’s claim

Nixon, who writes for The Sun, was quizzed by a Celtic fan in regards to transfers on Sunday morning. He claimed there was a possibility of a central midfielder arriving, before name-checking McCarthy.

He claimed that he is free to sign and is being discussed, presumably by the Hoops hierarchy.

“McCarthy is free … and deffo being discussed…”

The Verdict: Sign

McCarthy has made 272 appearances in the Premier League so would bring bundles of experience to the Hoops squad.

He could be a perfect signing for the current campaign, especially with Scott Brown leaving for Aberdeen. McCarthy is also just 30 years of age despite making over 450 appearances for club and country during his career, so his knowledge could be crucial under Ange Postecoglou.

The Irishman is a boyhood Celtic fan, so you’d expect he would entertain the possibility of moving to Parkhead.

Journalist reveals Ademola Lookman is a Crystal Palace target

Crystal Palace could firm up their long-standing interest in Ademola Lookman by making a bid this summer, according to The Athletic reporter Matt Woosnam.

Lookman suffered relegation from the Premier League last season as four goals in 35 appearances was not enough to stop Fulham making an immediate return to the Championship.

The 23-year-old is now back at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig after his season-long loan switch to Craven Cottage came to an end, but the London-born winger could leave Germany in favour of a return to his homeland.

Patrick Vieira, who was appointed as Roy Hodgson’s successor earlier this month, is looking to add reinforcements to his Palace squad ahead of the new season getting underway next month.

It has been reported that Lookman, who also counts Charlton Athletic and Everton among his former clubs, is among a number of youthful stars on the Eagles’ radar.

Lookman has been a wanted man at Selhurst Park for some time, it has been revealed.

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern, Woosnam said: “Palace have had a long-standing interest in him.

“A lot of clubs are probably going to be interested in him but I think it would be a good move, certainly after losing Andros Townsend.

“It would be a good signing and I don’t think he would be hugely expensive either, so it wouldn’t eat up too much of the transfer budget.”

West Brom journalist describes Johnstone situation as "sticky"

West Brom have a “sticky situation” on their hands with goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, says Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

New West Brom boss Valerien Ismael recently admitted that he expects to lose both Johnstone and Matheus Pereira before the transfer window closes.

The 28-year-old shot-stopper has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs following the Baggies’ relegation to the Championship, with Tottenham and West Ham two sides who are said to be interested.

Johnstone has one year remaining on his contract, which has left West Brom in a difficult predicament, according to Hatfield.

“15 to 20 million [offer], maybe they’ll consider it,” the West Brom journalist told FFC as he discussed Johnstone’s future. “Albion may rate him higher than that, but with one year left on your contract, you’re in a sticky situation.”

Johnstone is a top ‘keeper; he proved it last season with the amount of saves he made.

In the Premier League, the England international managed to make 166 saves – the highest in the top flight.

With his contract set to expire next year, though, West Brom, of course, risk losing him for free. Considering that, maybe it is best for the Midlands club to sell their asset this summer.

Everton: Benitez keen on Seferovic

Everton have joined the race for SL Benfica striker Haris Seferovic after Rafael Benitez’s seal of approval, according to Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manha (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Seferovic was directly involved in 29 goals – 22 goals, seven assists – in just 31 league appearances last season.

According to WhoScored, he excels at finishing, creating chances and winning aerial duels.

The 29-year-old was called up to represent Switzerland at the European Championships and bagged three goals, including a memorable double in the Round of 16 as the Swiss knocked out world champions France.

The latest

Seferovic is an option that ‘pleases’ Benitez, and as such Everton will rival Premier League sides West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the race for his signature.

The Blues have been made aware that it will take €25million (£21.6million) to persuade the Primeira Liga outfit to part with him.

Intriguingly, while Sky Sports journalist Pete Graves reported on Monday that Everton want to sign a back-up striker, this report says Seferovic is viewed as a potential replacement for Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison should they be lured away.

The verdict

Of the two potential departures mooted in the report, Richarlison is probably the more likely. It’s already been suggested that Carlo Ancelotti could look to bring him to Real Madrid.

So then you wonder if Seferovic would be an effective back-up to Calvert-Lewin. Ideally, Benitez should want someone with a different set of attributes, but there’s some definite overlap there with both players serving as effective target men.

Another reason to question the move would be Seferovic’s age, but there’s perhaps little prospect of recruiting a young, up-and-coming forward when Calvert-Lewin is only 24 and seems to have the spot locked down for years. A more experienced deputy may be the logical way to go, but one with the pace and agility to offer a different style to Calvert-Lewin.

In other news, Everton are interested in loaning this star from European giants.

Villa may rue not signing Norwich’s Milot Rashica

Aston Villa may rue not signing long-term transfer target Milot Rashica after news emerged that he has signed for newly-promoted Norwich City.

What’s the story?

The versatile forward was linked with a move to Villa Park last summer, with reports even suggesting that a deal was supposedly close. However, that failed to materialise before the end of the transfer window deadline, and Rashica ended up staying put with the Bundesliga side.

DeichStube then claimed that Villa hadn’t gone away in the chase to sign him, and that they will look very carefully at the 24-year-old’s form to see if a potential move in January could be struck.

And then, according to Football Insider, it was suggested that the Midlands club were preparing a fresh move for the forward this summer, adding that he “is on the club’s shortlist of potential wide forward signings going into the next transfer window”.

But Rashica will now no longer be playing in a Villa shirt, with Norwich confirming that they have signed him from Werder Bremen.

Villa may rue it

Florian Kohfeldt, Rashica’s manager at Bremen, has previously raved about the winger’s ability, saying: “He is a player who can decide Bundesliga games. You don’t find that very often. Milot has incredible skills. In speed, in goal scoring, in passing. These skills also fall on others. Rashica would fit well to England with his pace, but also with his style of play to Spain.”

Speaking on how Rashica would be an improvement on what Villa already have and how playing with someone like Grealish would help Rashica, Daniel Pinder, editor-in-chief at Get German Football News, told FFC: “He is a versatile player who can play anywhere across the front three as he has done for Werder Bremen, and I think he would be a huge upgrade on Trezeguet and El Ghazi.

“At a team like Villa where he would have the likes of Grealish and John McGinn, I think he could do well and excel.”

Given the fact the £8.1m-rated ace was linked with a move for Villa for so long, and has now instead joined a fellow Premier League side, Villa may rue the decision not to land Rashica.

For it to be such a long-running saga suggests Johan Lange was really keen on bringing him to Villa Park. And while they may have ended up signing Buendia, Rashica’s versatility means it really shouldn’t have been a case of either or.

It’s a move that Villa may feel they should have gone for. It may just go down as a howler from Lange.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has dropped a major Aston Villa transfer update…

Premier League on Newcastle takeover

Lee Ryder has dropped some enticing insight from the Premier League on the upcoming anti-competition case involving Mike Ashley and Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Legal battle

Mike Ashley has launched two separate claims against the English top flight over the failed takeover deal between him and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium.

One is the arbitration case due to take place this summer, and the other is the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT) lawsuit over their decision-making process with regards to the failed takeover bid.

The Latest: Premier League insight

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Ryder has shared that Ashley is facing strong opposition from Premier League chiefs who are denying any suggestion that his wish to sell the North East club was rejected.

Subsequently, the top flight are trying to get his CAT case thrown out, as they go through detailed evidence put forward recently.

Ryder adds that although there has been no decision made as of yet over when the anti-competition case can get under way, Ashley has been briefed that this could change at any time, and it looks likely that it will roll on in July.

The Verdict: Intriguing

It is certainly odd to hear that the Premier League are denying any suggestion that the proposed deal between Ashley and the KSA group was rejected in their quest to get the CAT case thrown out.

The St. James’ Park faithful clearly feel the opposite, and so it will no doubt be interesting to see what the results of both cases will be and how the league’s plot pans out.

Nonetheless, if the Tyneside club are successful in the legal saga, they will then need full cooperation from the top flight with regards to speeding up the takeover process.

With the summer transfer window already underway, and the start of the new 2021/22 season set to start in August, this will be vital if they are to make an immediate impression if the bid is able to go through.
