Gold shares big Spurs manager development

Writing on Twitter, reliable Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has shared a major managerial development now coming out of N17 involving Antonio Conte.

The Lowdown: Spurs and the Conte hunt…

The Italian emerged as a frontrunning candidate for the vacant Spurs job following difficulties in acquiring former favourite Mauricio Pochettino from Paris-Saint Germain.

Indeed, PSG made life difficult for Tottenham in pursuit of the Argentine and have been determined not to let him leave – resulting in the club starting to focus on Conte as an alternative.

Spurs have held extensive discussions with the 51-year-old over this last week.

The Latest: Gold shares major development…

Now, writing on Twitter, yet another twist has emerged in Spurs’ hunt for an heir to former boss Jose Mourinho – who they sacked in late April.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Spurs have been without a manager for over six weeks now and the wait shows no sign of ending after this latest update.

Backing previous reports, Gold has shared that Spurs’ interest in bringing Conte to N17 has reached its conclusion.

Alas, Tottenham have now ‘pulled the plug’ on talks with the Premier League title-winning boss – despite there being plenty of promise early in negotiations.

“Word just now coming out of Spurs that they’ve completely pulled plug on talks with Conte,” explained the reporter on social media.

“Despite promising early discussions. Utter mess from Spurs really.

“Went in a completely different direction to what they were looking for initially with a very different type of manager and character and then weirdly shocked when they realised he didn’t fit their means or that profile they were looking for.

“Bizarre waste of a week or so.”

The Verdict: Big blow, but hardly surprising…

Losing out on a manager with Conte’s pedigree comes as a massive disappointment for Lilywhites supporters.

Indeed, he appeared to be a very credible option given his record with previous clubs – especially considering his impressive haul of eight major trophies across three different clubs (Transfermarkt).

He has also averaged an impressive 2.01 points per match across his managerial career.

However, given Spurs’ financial struggles and Conte’s demanding nature, this is hardly a shock.

Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy confirmed his checklist for the type of manager he wants in his annual end of season letter to supporters, with the ex-Chelsea gaffer arguably not fitting into any of the boxes.

It is also unlikely Levy would have been able to back Conte sufficiently in the transfer market this summer.

As Simon Jordan put it on talkSPORT, it would have been a ‘match made in hell’.

‘Brown could have been tempted to stay’

Michael Stewart says Celtic could have held onto Scott Brown had they moved to replace Neil Lennon more quickly.

The former Scottish international was speaking on Sunday’s edition of Sportscene.

The lowdown

Celtic parted ways with Neil Lennon at the end of February but have yet to appoint a long-term successor.

Around a month after Lennon’s resignation, Brown announced that he would call time on his 14-year Celtic career.

He signed a pre-contract agreement with Aberdeen and will join in a player-coach role (via The Guardian) – the 35-year-old skipper played his last game in Celtic colours on Saturday, a goalless draw with Hibernian.

Brown won 10 Scottish league titles, six Scottish Cups and seven Scottish League Cups in Glasgow (via Transfermarkt).

Callum McGregor, set to don the armband going forward, insisted that the veteran ‘hasn’t lost a yard’, hailing Brown as ‘absolutely immense’ and a ‘first class’ player.

The latest

Stewart doesn’t think Brown’s departure should have been regarded as inevitable, saying the midfielder still has plenty to offer on the field.

“I can’t help but think that had Celtic been able to get this managerial situation sorted earlier, that Scott Brown could well have been hanging round there for longer.

“But what Celtic have lost is Aberdeen’s gain, forgetting the assistant manager’s role.”

The verdict

Brown must have been torn. On the one hand, Lennon’s departure and the breaking of Celtic’s stranglehold marked the natural end of an era, with a rebuild in the offing.

But on the other, he surely wanted to go out on a high rather than such a dismal low for the football club, and perhaps it would have been enjoyable to lead a new era as an experienced head, even if not a major part of the first-team action.

Ultimately, what matters now is that the likes of McGregor step up to fill the void and relish, rather than shirk, the extra responsibility. Given

Man City linked with Raphinha

Manchester City are the latest Premier League club to be linked with Leeds United winger Raphinha, with two of their biggest rivals also reportedly interested in signing the Brazilian this summer.

What’s the word?

According to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, City have joined the race to sign the highly-rated 24-year-old, with Manchester United and Liverpool both still holding an interest in him ahead of the summer transfer window.

He also suggested that Leeds are eager to keep him, which is unsurprising after his superb debut season with the Elland Road outfit, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side having signed him from Rennes following their promotion from the Championship last summer.

Would he be a good signing?

In 26 appearances for Leeds so far this season, Raphinha has contributed six goals and six assists, averaging a superb 7.17 WhoScored rating for his performances.

He was one of Leeds’ most impressive performers in their 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium in April, with his pace and trickery regularly causing problems for City’s defence, so it is no surprise to hear that they are now showing an interest in him ahead of the summer.

Raphinha has averaged 2.1 key passes and 2.3 shots per game so far this season, which only Kevin De Bruyne can better in the current Manchester City squad, which immediately suggests that he would be an excellent addition to Guardiola’s side ahead of next season.

The £22.5m-rated winger has won no shortage of plaudits for his displays this season, with Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes reportedly a big fan, as his teammate Fred confessed earlier in the season, perhaps in an attempt to convince him to move to Old Trafford.

The Brazilian said: Bruno’s been talking about Raphinha ever since he arrived. They played together at Sporting.

He’s a great player having an amazing season and a lot of clubs have their eye on him.

Considering his impressive performances this season, it would be a blow for City to lose out on Raphinha to their nearest rivals, so sporting director Txiki Begiristain should be putting plans in motion to bring him to the Etihad this summer.

West Ham now eyeing Hwang Hee-chan

According to a report by reliable journalist Mike McGrath, writing in his transfer notebook for the Telegraph, West Ham United and David Moyes are now eyeing RB Leipzig striker Hwang Hee-chan alongside London rivals Crystal Palace.

West Ham now eyeing Hee-chan

The South Korean ace, who was targeted by West Ham in January during their failed hunt for a Sebastien Haller replacement, is now back on the radar as Moyes seeks to add new forward additions this summer.

As well as a permanent deal for star loanee midfielder Jesse Lingard, the Hammers are said to be prioritising a new forward to find alternative options for main man Michail Antonio (Claret & Hugh), and it seems Hwang could be the man.

Moyes, speaking to the press recently, ruled West Ham out of the race for Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham if his price tag is indeed £40 million – with Hwang coming as a much cheaper alternative.

Transfer Tavern take

It is said that GSB could even secure the 25-year-old for as little as £10m, and despite the fact he has failed to score this season, his exploits over 2019/2020 still mark him out as a potentially bargain acquisition.

Indeed, the 32-cap ace bagged 11 goals and 12 assists in the league for RB Salzburg before securing a move to the Bundesliga (Transfermarkt) – with former teammate and superstar Erling Haaland even calling him ‘absolutely crazy’ (Bundesliga).

Former Salzburg head coach Peter Zeidler also subbed the rising starlet ‘exceptional’ with ‘brutal dynamism’ (Bundesliga) – and descriptions like this possibly point to the forward West Ham need for an much more meagre price than the one quoted above for Abraham.

Everton fans slam Olsen transfer update

Some Everton fans have bemoaned a transfer update on Robin Olsen as the Liverpool Echo (via The Toffee Blues) have reported that he wants to stay at the club.

According to the report, the Goodison Park outfit are also happy for the Sweden international to remain on Merseyside after his loan spell from AS Roma ends, despite some rumours suggesting that he wanted to return to the Serie A side.

This news has not pleased some Toffees supporters, given that the Sweden international has barely even played for Everton so far, making just nine appearances in total across all competitions. Those games have seen him ship 15 goals and keep just two clean sheets (Transfermarkt).

At 31 years of age, coupled with the recent emergence of Joao Virginia, maybe it is not the wisest idea by Carlo Ancelotti and co to keep him at the end of his loan spell.

Villa can find Watkins partner in Edouard

It appears Aston Villa haven’t given up hope of signing Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard just yet.

Reports in recent days have suggested that Villa remain keen on signing Edouard in the upcoming summer transfer window, and if the club do end up signing the Frenchman, it could help build a dream attack for Dean Smith.

Speaking after his superb performance in a 3-0 win over Hamilton earlier in the season, Celtic boss Neil Lennon said: “He’s scored goals in cup finals, he’s scored goals in big games from the penalty spot and he took it brilliantly today. He looked far more like himself today and I thought he was magnificent. He’s a joy to watch at times, so he’s had a good day as well.

“We’ve got two good strikers there, the link up for the second goal is great.”

And that last part about the link-up between the two strikers is what should have Smith excited about how Edouard could fit into his plans at Villa Park.

This season in the Premier League, the Villa boss has had to rely on Ollie Watkins as his sole striking option, with Wesley still on his way back to full fitness, and Keinan Davis not getting a look-in.

While Smith has gone with the lone man up front, Edouard’s arrival could see a potential shift in tactics, with the Frenchman lining up alongside Watkins as a two-man duo – the latter of course could drift out wide given that he’s played as a winger before earlier in his career.

The £13.5m-rated Edouard has got the all-round game to be both a finisher and creator, something best seen by his very impressive Celtic record of 81 goals and 35 assists.

Adding the Frenchman to Villa’s striking ranks would give Smith the option of playing the two up top as an old-school strike duo, or play Watkins off the flanks with Edouard through the middle.

It would go a long way to helping Smith build a dream attack at Villa.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa struck a dream transfer deal with this star…
