No T20 typecasting for Thomas

ScorecardAlfonso Thomas again showed his versatility at Taunton•PA Photos

Alfonso Thomas is a cricketer who could have been designed for the age of the pop-up Twenty20 league. His canny bowling, a fusion of yorkers, slower balls and supreme accuracy, has enjoyed success the world over.Thomas has thrived in the Big Bash, the Bangladeshi Premier League and the Indian Premier League, as well as in England and South Africa. There is no need for him to bother with the rigours of county championship cricket. He evidently takes a different view. Even the morning after a T20 game, when his excelling with bat and ball could not prevent Somerset slipping to defeat, Thomas was full of vim. Bustling in with a smooth, economical run-up, Thomas retains deceptive pace: rare is the 37-year-old who can hit batsmen with his bouncer. But it was another delivery that provided the day’s defining image. With Paul Collingwood relishing firefighting duties, Thomas produced a delivery that pitched up, kissed the seam, and moved late enough to defeat a groping bat to dismantle the top of off stump.Such sights have been familiar at Taunton since Thomas joined Somerset in 2008. His limited-overs nous is renowned – South Africa tried to persuade him to play in the 2012 World T20 but he declined in order to preserve his Kolpak status – but Thomas’s virtues as a first-class performer should not be underestimated.Into his seventh season at Somerset, he has claimed 243 first-class wickets at 26 apiece. Given that Somerset have been in Division One for the duration of his stay at the club and Taunton remains one of the best batting tracks in the country, it has been quite an effort.Seldom will Thomas have encountered more responsive conditions than these at Taunton: a different track to one that produced a sedate draw against Nottinghamshire a fortnight ago, and copious cloud cover to boot. Even so, Taunton remains the archetypal bat first track, as Durham chose to do after winning the toss.Thomas and Peter Trego, Somerset’s opening attack, had a combined age of just 69, compared to 75 the day before. They bowled expertly. Yet Durham will reflect on some poor shot selection; Mark Stoneman was bowled playing across the line, and Michael Richardson was lbw trying to pull a ball that was not short enough for the shot. When Phil Mustard edged his first ball to slip, Trego was on a hat-trick. That proved beyond him, but Durham were 24 for 4 on the first morning at Taunton. These things are not meant to happen.A knack for crisis management earned Collingwood his Brigadier Block sobriquet for England. But that was not apt today, with Collingwood in counter-punching mood. With Scott Borthwick seeming to have more time than the other batsmen and drivingly pleasingly through the covers, the two targeted the Overton twins. Both tall and powerfully built, they look identical, although they can be recognised by their bowling styles. Jamie, who earned an England ODI call-up last summer, is sharper but he was also more erratic and susceptible to bowling no balls. Nine overs from the twins yielded 47, but Thomas returned to end Durham’s hopes of amassing a respectable score.Borthwick was aghast to be caught at midwicket, and Mark Wood was trapped plumb on his back leg to give Thomas his second five-fer in consecutive Championship games. With Somerset’s leading wicket-taker Lewis Gregory ruled out for several weeks with a hamstring injury, George Dockrell played his first Championship game of the season, and bowled smartly to snare two lower-order wickets. There was turn for his left-arm spin, too, vindicating the decision of both sides to pick two spinners. Borthwick will be expected to add to the three Championship wickets he has taken in 2014, while offspinner Ryan Pringle was handed a debut.Neither Durham spinner has yet bowled, but they did claim two wickets before showers halted the day. Collingwood, frustrated by Durham’s batting flakiness resurfacing, was notably vocal as Durham took to the field, anxious for the attack to assert themselves with Graham Onions injured. When Collingwood’s old England team-mate flashed, leaden-footed, to slip to the first ball – Marcus Trescothick’s second golden duck in three innings – it would have gone some way to lightening his mood, and was a reminder of Chris Rushworth’s qualities on the day he signed a new three-year contract.Resilience in conditions such as these earned Nick Compton a Test debut two years ago, but he poked rather tamely at Mark Wood’s first ball. Had Johann Myburgh, promoted to open after Chris Jones was dropped, been run out by Phil Mustard’s throw, Somerset would have come uncomfortably close to ruining Thomas’s sterling work.

Nepal players call off boycott

The boycott by Nepal’s national cricketers has been called off after the constitution of an advisory committee that would work in tandem with the Cricket Association of Nepal

Rachna Shetty17-Apr-2014The boycott by Nepal’s national cricketers has been called off after the constitution of an advisory committee that would work in tandem with the Cricket Association of Nepal. The decision to form the planning and monitoring committee was taken on Wednesday night at a meeting between the board and the players facilitated by Nepal’s sports ministry and sports council. The committee will have five members – a representative each from CAN, the sports ministry and the sports council, along with the captain and the coach, Pubudu Dassanayake.”The committee will plan the development of cricket, make suggestions to CAN and then monitor the progress of these plans,” Ashok Nath Pyakuryal, the secretary of CAN, told ESPNcricinfo. “They will look at suggesting ways to develop cricket, restructure domestic cricket in the country and once their recommendations have been submitted to the board, the sports ministry and the sports council will supervise the implementation of these suggestions.”Pyakuryal also said that the other major demands made by the players at the time of the boycott – related to payment of dues and medical aid to allrounder Prithu Baskota – had already been resolved. The advisory committee was seen as a middle ground in the negotiations as the board, considered to be the highest cricket administrative authority in Nepal, could not be dissolved under the existing laws of the country.Nepal captain Paras Khadka, who had earlier stated the boycott was prompted by a need for better accountability in the administration, said he was excited that players had been given a say within the system.”It’s the first time for players to be involved in the decision-making process and it’s a great initiative,” Khadka said. “It will help us create a base for the future and help the next generation of cricketers. The committee will meet regularly and will also be looking at the overall aspects of the game, including administration and finance.”Khadka also expressed hope that the cricketers would soon have a contract system, which would also benefit the regional players, and that the board would appoint full-time professionals, like a CEO, over the next year.Nepal’s national cricketers had decided to boycott the national one-day tournament, which began on April 9 and was meant to be a selection trial for the Asian Cricket Council’s Premier League tournament, scheduled to begin on May 1. The deadline for submitting the squad was April 10 but Pyakuryal said CAN had sought an extension and would select a squad for the tournament soon.

Tuskers squeeze past Rocks

A round-up of the Logan Cup matches that ended on March 21, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Mar-2014Nkosana Mpofu scored an unbeaten century to guide Matabeleland Tuskers to a thrilling one-wicket win over Southern Rocks in Bulawayo. Chasing 279, Tuskers were 244 for 9 when Mpofu was joined by last man Steve Chimhamhiwa. The pair saw Tuskers through to victory, putting on 35 in 13 overs. Mpofu, the left-handed opener, was not out on 130, having faced 317 balls and struck 13 fours.Mpofu had shared half-century stands with fellow opener Bornaparte Mujuru and No. 3 Brian Chari, and kept one end going as wickets fell regularly after that, with medium-pacer Luke Jongwe picking up four. Chimhamhiwa scored the winning single , and was unbeaten on 21.Chimhamhiwa had given Tuskers the early advantage after Rocks won the toss and chose to bat. The right-arm seamer picked up six wickets to help bowl Rocks out for 190. They might not have gotten that far had Richmond Mutumbami not scored a 108-ball 87.Tuskers did no better in their first innings, being bowled out for 166 with Godwill Mamhiyo top-scoring with 51. Mutumbami, the Rocks skipper, extended their advantage with an unbeaten third-innings 123. Wickets kept falling around him, with offspinner John Nyumbu taking six for 59, but Mutumbami extended Rocks’ total to 259. Mutumbami’s twin efforts nearly won Rocks the match, but Mpofu and Chimhamhiwa had other ideas.Mashonaland Eagles moved to the top of the points table with a convincing 187-run win over Midwest Rhinos at Kwekwe Sports Club. Seamer Taurai Muzarabani and left-arm spinner Brighton Mugochi shared 13 wickets between them in the match as the Rhinos were bowled out for 162, chasing 350.The Eagles were struggling at 117 for 5 after choosing to bat, and were revived by Nathan Waller who hit 76. Tinotenda Mutombodzi chipped in with 43 as the Eagles were bowled out for 227 with Kudakwashe Munyede taking 4 for 49. Early strikes by Muzarabani reduced the Rhinos to 26 for 3 and it required a fifty by Neville Madziva to take them to 170. Waller and Mugochi took three wickets apiece. The Eagles built on their lead of 57 with a fifty by Mark Vermeulen and a century by the wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva. Vermeulen’s 77 came off 130 balls while Chakabva’s 111 came off just 120 balls as the Eagles looked to declare and set a target. The script was similar in the Rhinos’ second innings as Muzarabani’s early strikes reduced them to 35 for 5. Madziva scored another half-century but lacked support as the Rhinos were bowled out within 61 overs.

PCB revises domestic calendar to meet financial viability

The PCB has announced a domestic calendar in which the two first-class tournaments willbe conducted simultaneously, with the same structure applying for the List A tournaments

According to the PCB, the simultaneous scheduling of regional and department competitions will give regional players more chances•PCB

Pakistan’s domestic season 2013-14

Quaid-e-Azam Trophy: October 23, 2013-January 28, 2014, 14 teams, two groups, 61 matches

One-day Cup for Regions: October 28, 2013 – January 1, 2014, 14 teams, two groups, 45 matches

President’s Trophy (first-class): October 23, 2013 – February 11, 2014, 11 teams, 1 group, 56 matches

President’s Cup (one-day): October 28, 2013 – February 4, 2014, 11 teams, 1 group, 56 matches

Patron’s Trophy Grade-II: March 1, 2014 – March 31, 2014, 24 teams, 4 groups, 63 matches

The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced a domestic calendar in which two first-class tournaments – the Quaid-e-Azam trophy and the President’s Trophy – will run simultaneously. The two List A events, like the first-class tournaments, will also be held concurrently. The Super Eight T20 Cup has been scrapped to make way for an 11-team departmental Twenty20 cup. The calendar has been chalked out to make the season financially cost-effective, and regional and department tournaments being played at the same time will allow more young players to feature for the regional teams. In previous years, players from various departments would feature in regional teams, making it difficult for other players to break into the side. The structure of domestic cricket in Pakistan has been inconsistent and revamps have occurred every two years over the last decade. However, this year, the tournament formats have been retained and the schedule adopted to accommodate simultaneous first-class and List A tournaments. The Quaid-e-Azam trophy, the country’s premier first-class tournament will have 14 regional teams, while the President’s Trophy will have 11 departmental teams playing a round-robin league phase. The first round of both tournaments begin on October 23 and the regional and department teams will play a round of one-day matches on October 28. Apart from the senior circuit, the PCB has scheduled inter-regional Under-19 three-day and one-day tournaments between October 26 to December 13. A 10-day National T20 Cup will be played between 17 teams from November 20 to 29, sandwiched between Pakistan’s international series against South Africa and Sri Lanka. One season of domestic cricket costs the PCB approximately Rs 300 million ($2.8m). With the board going through a financial crunch, it plans to reduce the cost by switching to locally made Grays cricket balls, instead of the imported Kookaburra. The department teams, who are expected to bear their own logistical costs and the costs of the ball refused to sustain the Kookaburra idea and the move is likely to help save nearly Rs 10 million. The decision to use Kookaburra balls was taken last year as the board tried to introduce international standards on the domestic cricket circuit.”We believe the season will bring a more prosperous result to our cricket,” Shakeel Sheikh, the head of PCB’s cricket committee, told ESPNcricinfo. “There is a desperate need to unearth the talent from regional nurseries, but for some reason the cycle of getting the quality young cricketers is not working as it should be. We want change and want to have more young legs in the field that will eventually replace players at the department level. Having all tournaments at the same time prevents departmental players from featuring in regional teams.”ESPNcricinfo understands that there are approximately 220 players recruited by the departments. Around 28 of those players will be on national duty during the domestic season; from the main pool, about 65-70 players age between 30 to 40 years while 67 players does not qualify for national selection due to poor fitness and performance.”This is the reason we want to induct a plan to blood youngsters in the pipeline and replace ageing players,” said Sheikh. “We want to encourage the player at the regional level and want to extend the pool of quality players and give them ample opportunity at the domestic level, and create a sense of security for their place.”Former skipper Rashid Latif, the sports head of the department team, Port Qasim Authority (PQA), supported the idea of hosting tournaments simultaneously. “It will be easier for the departments to assemble their teams for these tournaments and will save time and money,” Latif said. “Previously, there used to be a gap of a month or more between one-day and first-class tournaments, which made things difficult for departments. Regions have always been a nursery to produce new talent and hopefully we’ll see new good players coming up this season.”

Albie Morkel considers his SA career over

Albie Morkel has become the second South African player in the past one week to consider his international career over. In an interview to the , Morkel admitted he does not see the IPL as an opportunity to stake a claim for a national recall.”By all counts I won’t play for South Africa again, so it’s not a desire of mine to prove anything to anyone,” Morkel wrote. “My focus will be to do my best for CSK and contribute on and off the field.”Last Thursday Ashwell Prince signed a two-year Kolpak deal with Lancashire and yesterday went to Lord’s to confirm the end of his ambitions to play for South Africa.Morkel and Prince both lost their central contracts last month, when CSA announced their 21-player list. Also dropped from the books was Jacques Rudolph, Rusty Theron and the retired Mark Boucher. The four who are still playing were told by convener of selectors Andrew Hudson that they would be considered for the national team if any of them showed exceptional form, but the reassurance has not been a comfort to two of them.Prince, who last played in the Boxing Day Test of 2011, appears to have accepted losing his place in the Test line-up. Mohammed Moosajee, the South Africa team manager who has known Prince throughout his career said that at 35, the batsmen was simply looking for ways to “further his career before retirement,” so that the administrators harbour no hard feelings over his new contract. For Morkel, the situation is a little different. He is regarded as one of the top Twenty20 allrounders in the game, has been called one of the best finishers by MS Dhoni and, on face value, seems to have all the qualities South Africa need in a powerful middle-order hitter in limited-overs. But his numbers do not match his reputation. In ODIs, Morkel averages 23.69 with the bat and 37.98 with the ball and has seldom put in the kind of match-winning performance expected of him. His strike rate in T20s sits at over 142.73, but with South Africa’s constantly changing structure there was never room to use him as an opening bowler and there was not a designated spot in the batting line-up for him.Morkel did not settle into a role, as he did at CSK, and the lack of certainty seemed to impact on his performances. Stephen Fleming alluded to that at the 2012 Champions League when he explained why Morkel’s success in the IPL outweighed his achievements at international level.”He is a bit more secure with us and a bit more in spotlight which may make him more comfortable with CSK in his role,” Fleming said. “When you have got a talented side like South Africa, they try different techniques and tactics all the way through and he may be searching a bit for his role within the side.”The system gave Morkel many years, but not enough successive matches, to find his place and eventually cut him off. Although Hudson did not close the door on Morkel, he left it barely ajar when he said the selectors felt it was time to “move forward,” and had “one or two other options in mind for the limited-overs formats.”Ryan McLaren is the first choice allrounder at the moment but Chris Morris, Morkel’s new team-mate at CSK, is another of the players South Africa are looking to blood in that role. Morkel had nothing but praise for the man whom he may end up facing off against for a place in the starting XI. “Chris has really done well in the last two seasons in South Africa. He is a fierce competitor, bowls fast and can hit the ball long. He will definitely win CSK a few games,” Morkel said.Or his graciousness may just be another sign of how well Morkel has been managed by Fleming and how much he enjoys playing under him. Morkel will meet up with his CSK team-mates after playing in the South African domestic T20 final on Sunday which means he will not be available for their opener against Mumbai Indians on Saturday.

BBL chief McKenna's dual roles under spotlight

Mike McKenna’s contentious dual role as Cricket Australia’s chief of commercial operations and custodian of its disciplinary codes is expected to be placed under the spotlight as part of the former AFL executive Adrian Anderson’s review of CA integrity. While McKenna’s job as CA’s commercial head and executive in charge of the Big Bash League is not in question, ESPNcricinfo understands there have been mounting concerns within the governing body about the management of disciplinary matters.McKenna has overseen this area since the departure of the former head of cricket, Michael Brown, in 2011, and the move of the former general manager of cricket operations, Geoff Allardice, to the ICC in 2012.Anderson is expected to submit his report into CA’s integrity management by the middle of 2013, with his review to include, according to a CA statement, “anti-doping policies and disciplinary processes, domestic cricket anti-corruption and CA’s involvement in the ICC’s global anti-corruption program”. There is the strong possibility McKenna’s role will be re-shaped, with responsibility for disciplinary process moved elsewhere within the organisation to guard against conflict, and perceptions of conflict.Standards of on-field behaviour during this summer’s BBL degenerated, culminating in the ugly bust-up between Shane Warne and Marlon Samuels at the MCG. As BBL chief and also disciplinary czar, McKenna was in the invidious position of trying to increase the commercial value of the tournament while also having oversight for the code of conduct hearings that had Warne let off with a one game ban and $5000 fine while Marlon Samuels subsequently escaped with a mere reprimand.Other incidents prior to the Warne/Samuels affair were not pursued at all, and while some elements of CA were content to have the BBL publicised by any means, others were unnerved by the appearance of poor player behaviour being effectively condoned. This raised alarms given the tournament’s aggressive marketing towards families and children: CA’s spirit of cricket initiatives were made to appear empty commitments to the conduct of the game.Since the end of the BBL, closer attention has been paid to player behaviour in domestic matches, as demonstrated by CA’s insistence that Ricky Ponting front a hearing and be fined for throwing his bat when dismissed in a limited overs match at the WACA ground on Tuesday. It is expected that all contracted players will be briefed again about their behavioural responsibilities before next summer.”Public faith in the integrity of sports results they see on the playing field is absolutely critical and we want everything we do pressure-tested by an independent specialist expert to be sure we are as good as we can be,” CA chief executive James Sutherland said in announcing the review. “While the timing is coincidental, and while the ACC report had no evidence of cricket concerns, its publication is a timely reminder that no modern elite sport is immune from risk.”Anderson was the AFL’s general manager of operations from 2003 to 2012, responsible for a raft of changes to the governance of the game, its rules and disciplinary procedures. He was instrumental in the revamp of the league tribunal, and in setting up the competition integrity unit that investigated allegations the Melbourne Football Club “tanked” games in 2007.The exit of Anderson from the AFL followed indications that the league’s chief executive Andrew Demetriou had passed him over in order to anoint the former head of commercial operations, Gillon McLachlan, as his future successor.
