West Indies register thumping win at Barbados

With fans at the Kensington Oval in Barbados yelling for a quick West Indian victory on the fourth day, the Indian tail finally wagged

Anand Vasu05-May-2002With fans at the Kensington Oval in Barbados yelling for a quick West Indian victory on the fourth day, the Indian tail finally wagged. Just enough to make West Indies bat again and chase a `target’ of five for victory. They duly did so, winning the match by 10 wickets and leveling the series 1-1 with two matches to play. The day began with VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly going about the business of keeping the Windies at bay in earnest. They were, after all, the last recognised pair of batsmen in the Indian line-up.Laxman, with Indian fans’ hopes of a repeat of the Kolkata miracle in the air, added just 13 runs to his overnight score before being the first wicket to fall. Pedro Collins, bowling an excellent, teasing line around the wicket, had Laxman flicking at a full delivery that left the right-hander. Hooper took an excellent catch low down and India were 183/5.Ajay Ratra, who has not distinguished himself with the bat in this series, once again stuttered, playing and missing constantly before Merv Dillon put an end to his misery. In a dismissal reminiscent of the Tendulkar lbw, Ratra was adjudged lbw to a delivery that struck him high on the pad.Harbhajan Singh (three), who looked determined to stick around, slashed hard at one outside the off from Cuffy and inside-edged the ball on to the stumps.Zaheer Khan provided some light entertainment with his energetic, vigorous heaves. The results were good when he connected, but that wasn’t nearly often enough to make a difference to India’s cause. Although he averages just 7.28 in Tests, people might remember Zaheer Khan’s 24 off four balls against Henry Olonga. He certainly can give the ball a clout. And today seemed to be his day. Launching into some aggressive pulls that sailed over the fence at midwicket, Zaheer Khan notched up a career best 46 (45 balls, five fours, two sixes) before tickling a long-hop from part-time leggie Ramnaresh Sarwan to ‘keeper Jacobs. The fall of Khan’s wicket signalled lunch, with Ganguly repeating his first innings performance – unbeaten on 53. Zaheer Khan and Ganguly put on 74 for the eighth wicket, taking India close to avoiding the innings defeat.Coming out after lunch, Javagal Srinath was dismissed for a golden duck, edging Sarwan to Chris Gayle at close gully. Having not taken a single Test wicket in his career coming into this match, Sarwan had two wickets off consecutive balls!Ashish Nehra attempted to do a Zaheer Khan, swatting the ball about for three, before holing out Pedro Collins in the deep.Unbeaten on 60 (146 balls, seven fours) Ganguly top scored for India in a disappointing, but much improved, 296 all out. With the West Indies needing just five to win, India handed Sachin Tendulkar the new ball. Although he gave one run away off a no-ball, the man we’re more used to seeing batting completed a tidy over. Harbhajan Singh shared the new ball with Tendulkar, in search of his 100th Test wicket. No such thing happened though. A short ball was creamed to the cover fence by Stuart Williams and that was that. West Indies had won by 10 wickets.

Fry sends Rangers Clarke-Harris warning

Barry Fry has opened up on Jonson Clarke-Harris’ situation this summer amid transfer interest from Rangers.

What’s the talk?

Peterborough’s director of football has said that it will take a ‘good offer’ for the English club to sell Rangers target Clarke-Harris this summer.

Fry has said that he expects bids to come in for the centre-forward, but has made it clear that Peterborough want to compete in the Championship and will not sell Clarke-Harris on the cheap.

He told Football Transfer Tavern: “Do I expect bids for Jonson Clarke-Harris? Yes I do. Will they be enough? I don’t know.

“Because we don’t want to go up to the Championship and be also-rans, we want to go up to the Championship and stay there and progress further, so it’ll have to be a good offer.”

Peterborough co-owner Darragh MacAnthony lavished praise on the “fantastic” attacker earlier this year and failed to rule out Clarke-Harris leaving the club in the summer. He told Sky Sports News, as relayed by the Hull Daily Mail: “Peterborough United can never pay players £25/30,000 a week, there will be seven or eight clubs already offering Jonson Clarke-Harris, Dembele, that kind of money.

“We are that club, we have to build. We’re not going to be selling a lot of our assets, but you always have one player that so many clubs are after, they’re going to tap them up which is normal, par for the course and it’s difficult to compete with that.

“He’s been fantastic, the best player in League One the best goalscorer in England and if we can keep him, brilliant, because he’ll be worth double by January in the Championship.”

Gerrard needs him

Ross Wilson must sanction a deal for Rangers to sign Clarke-Harris this summer. Whilst Fry has made it clear that the 26-year-old will not be sold for a bargain price, he has not completely ruled out a sale, and that should give Rangers encouragement that there is a deal to be done this summer.

The allure of Champions League football could be enough to convince Clarke-Harris to ditch a Championship campaign with Peterborough, as he could have the chance to play in Europe’s premier competition with the Gers next season.

Rangers were unable to find a consistent goalscorer in the Premiership as they won the title last season, with a number of players sharing the goalscoring load. Alfredo Morelos, James Tavernier and Kemar Roofe all scored between 10 and 11 goals, whilst Joe Aribo, Ianis Hagi and Ryan Kent all netted six or more league goals. This suggests that Gerrard needs a centre-forward who is able to reliably score 20+ goals a season, rather than relying on multiple players to chip in.

Clarke-Harris proved in England’s League One that he can score goals at a ridiculous rate. The £6,100-per-week gem found the back of the net an astounding 33 times in all competitions for Peterborough last term, including 31 in League One.

This suggests that he could be the man Gerrard needs to come in and fire Rangers to another Premiership title and hopefully help them go deep into the Champions League or Europa League knockout stages. Therefore, Wilson needs to get a deal over the line for Clarke-Harris to bolster Rangers’ attacking options.

AND in other news, Wilson must seal bargain Rangers deal for “fantastic” dynamo, Gerrard would love him…

Supporting cast gives India edge

The two most exciting and beguiling cricketers of their time, Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar, are on opposite sides for the first time in five years.Yet the West Indies and India start the Cable & Wireless series today battling each other to escape the lower reaches of the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) ratings.Lara, the brilliant West Indian returning after a three-month layoff through injury, and Tendulkar, the little Indian maestro, share a host of records, 46 Tests hundreds and averages in excess of 50. But the ICC places their teams ahead only of Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.Tendulkar, whose average of 58.57 from 91 Tests places him among the all-time batting elite, needs only another two centuries to surpass the legendary Australia Don Bradman’s incredible 29 in 52 Tests (from which he averaged just .06 short of an even 100) and nudge closer to the overall record of 34 by another great Indian, Sunil Gavaskar.Millions of his adoring countrymen will be following his progress, fully expecting him to feast on the inexperienced West Indies bowling. The West Indies rely on Lara, the flamboyant left-hander from Trinidad, to reply in kind. They have not always been able to depend on him as India has Tendulkar, for his form tends to fluctuate with his moods. But when he puts his mind to it, as he did in compiling Test cricket’s highest individual score, 375, against England in Antigua eight years ago and more recently in three Tests in Sri Lanka last December when he compiled 688 runs at 114.66, not even Tendulkar is as devastating. He dislocated and fractured his elbow in an on-field collision in a subsequent One-Day International, an injury that required two months to properly heal.Since then his match cricket has been confined to an innings of 71 against a touring amateur club team from Surrey in Port-of-Spain two weeks ago. But he reports no discomfort batting in the nets.Captains Carl Hooper of the West Indies and Saurav Ganguly of India are adamant that there are 22 players on the field, not just two, and that the series will surely be decided by more than the anticipated face-off between Lara and Tendulkar. The numbers strongly favour India, even given their appalling record overseas where they have not won a series since they overcame Sri Lanka 1-0 in Sri Lanka eight years ago and the West Indies’ resilience at home where they have fallen only twice in the past 28 years.Apart from Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Ganguly and opener Shiv Das are Indian batsmen who average over 40. Lara is the only West Indian in that league. While the veteran leg-spinner Anil Kumble has 316 wickets to his name and fast bowler Javagal Srinath 219, the West Indies are so short of experience the spearhead of their attack, Merv Dillon, has just 76.

Love strikes late in the day to keep Border afloat

MWP09-Mar-2001Three wickets by offspinner Geoff Love late on Thursday put Border in ahealthy position after the first day of a vital Super Eight encounteragainst one of the two sides still in a position to prevent them reaching athird successive Supersport Series final.Love knocked over Louis Koen, Jonathan Trott and Henry Davids, taking threefor 18 in 14 overs, to reduce the visitors to 87 for five by the close, inreply to Border’s 192.The last man who could seemingly make a difference between a first inningslead and a substantial deficit, Justin Ontong, was unbeaten on 29 overnight, although Boland don’t have too much batting to come. After the Winelanders had put the home side in to bat at Buffalo Park, whichhas seen its fair share of rain in the build-up to the encounter, nationaldiscard Henry Williams struck with telling effect, removing Craig Sugdenbefore a run had been scored and not conceding a run in his first fourovers, en route to a final analysis of five for 38.Andrew Pringle also weighed in with four for 49, although it was left-armerNeil Carter, who went for 31 in his first four overs, who struck possiblythe most telling blow, removing Border skipper Pieter Strydom for the homeside’s top score of 55, made off just 81 balls, with 10 fours.Twenty-three each from Vasbert Drakes and last man out Dumisa Makalimahelped carry Border past the 150 needed for a lone batting bonus point, though they fell short of a second. All in all, though, the home side willbe confident of a first innings lead if their bowlers get it right early onFriday.

Gooch has shocker in SAFC defeat

Sunderland’s make-shift right-back Lynden Gooch endured a torrid afternoon on Saturday afternoon as Lee Johnson’s side failed in their bid to reach the play-off final.

After losing the first leg of their semi-final clash with Lincoln City 2-0, the Black Cats had a monumental job on their hands in the return fixture in order to secure a spot in the play-off final at Wembley.

Despite the task at hand, a blistering start by Johnson’s side appeared to get them back on track, as first-half goals from Ross Stewart and Charlie Wyke immediately wiped out the Imps’ advantage, with Sunderland appearing to have all the momentum heading into halftime.

However, this momentum didn’t last long, as Tom Hooper put Michael Appleton’s side back ahead on aggregate shortly after the restart, a blow which, ultimately, Sunderland failed to recover from – with the tie finishing 3-2 to Lincoln over the two legs.

Despite the loss, a number of Johnson’s men put in admirable performances in the fixture, with Aiden McGeady earning a SofaScore match rating of 9.0, while Wyke earned an 8.5 rating and Stewart a 7.8 rating.

Although, other players did not fare anywhere near as well, none more so than Sunderland’s make-shift right-back Lynden Gooch.

Having been one of the Black Cats’ worst players in the first leg, the 25-year-old once again let his side down on Saturday, albeit while playing in an unfamiliar position.

Over the course of his 89 minutes on the pitch, the £5k-per-week midfielder was extremely sloppy with the ball, completing just 24 of his 40 attempted passes, none of his three attempted crosses, and six of his 14 attempted long balls.

The USA international also lost possession of the ball an extraordinary 28 times in the match, a figure greater than any other player on the pitch, from either side, on the day.

From a defensive standpoint, Gooch also lost 10 of his 14 duels, was dribbled past once and committed three fouls.

Indeed, the Sunderland academy graduate’s SofaScore match rating of 5.8 ranked him as the club’s worst player in the fixture, and it could easily be argued that his performance played a huge part in Sunderland’s failure to reach the play-off final.

As such, Gooch now has a long summer ahead of him to reflect on his displays over the two legs against Lincoln City, with the midfielder very much appearing to have badly let his team and manager down. His manager trusted him to do a job, but Gooch betrayed that trust with a terrible display.

Watford heading for Wilmot disaster

Xisco Munoz’s Watford side are considering allowing Ben Wilmot to leave Vicarage Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that the Hornets are yet to decide whether or not to extend the 21-year-old’s contract, which is set to expire at the end of next season.

It is reported, however, that the club have the option to extend the centre-back’s stay until 2023 due to a clause in his current deal.

As a result of Watford’s apparent indecision regarding the £2.7 million-rated man, The Athletic claim that Swansea City are keeping a close eye on the England U21 international ahead of a potential move this summer.

Wilmot must stay

Despite his tender age, Wilmot nevertheless played an important role in helping Watford achieve automatic promotion to the Premier League last season, with the centre-back making 25 Championship appearances for Xisco’s side, over which he helped to keep six clean sheets as well as averaging a respectable SofaScore match rating of 6.76.

However, it is not exactly the defender’s performances in the season just past that are the reason why Watford should look to keep the youngster on their books, but rather those that are to come in the future.

Having progressed through the England youth setup, while currently playing for the U21 side, it is clear that, from a national perspective, the perception is that Wilmot’s game bears a great deal of promise.

Indeed, this was an opinion shared by his former centre-back partner, Jack King, during his time at Stevenage, who stated his belief that Wilmot has a “bright future ahead of him.”

As such, while the argument could be made that the defender may not be ready for Premier League football just yet, it would be highly advisable for Cristiano Giaretta to avoid cashing in on the 21-year-old this summer, as, after gaining more experience at Championship level – perhaps on a loan deal – we would not bet against Wilmot flourishing into an extremely good option for the Hornets at some point in the not so distant future, as well as one who has the potential to become a lot more valuable financially.

Man City fans erupt over ESL claim

According to a report by journalist Sid Lowe in The Guardian, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is understood to be referencing Manchester City as the club not being ‘fully committed’ to the European Super League (ESL), which apparently played a heavy hand in the breakaway division’s eventual suspension.

Indeed, as per this report, the Sky Blues are whom Perez is referencing when he opened up over one of the six Premier League founding clubs first getting cold feet over the project.

He explained that ‘one of the English clubs’ didn’t seem so interested and that doubt ‘spread to the rest’ of the teams (The Guardian), eventually resulting in many clubs announcing they’d be withdrawing from the ESL plans.

With Lowe explaining that this originally unnamed club is indeed City, many Sky Blues supporters erupted at this claim – with one fan calling it ‘massive’.

The proposed breakaway could have had untold consequences for English football, especially considering that UEFA threatened to ban involved sides from domestic competition and even warned that players may not be able to represent their national teams (Sam Cunningham on Twitter).

Given the huge ESL tipping point in which City allegedly played a heavy part, it’s little wonder this has grabbed plenty of attention from fans.  Lots of Sky Blues supporters protested over their club’s involvement in the controversial plans, with many now overjoyed their side eventually played a big role in its suspension.

E passou a dar certo no decorrer do jogo.
