Southampton must sell a flop who earns more than Walker-Peters & Fernandes

Ivan Juric has been unable to turn around the Southampton sinking ship since his arrival to the South Coast in late December, as the Saints stare a dire relegation straight in the face.

The Premier League table doesn’t lie with Southampton rock bottom of the pile currently on just six points, with an alarming ten point gap opening up already between the division’s basement club and Wolverhampton Wanderers in 17th position.

Whilst survival looks a tall order, there are a few faces in Juric’s camp that will continue to hold their heads high as bright sparks during these bleak times.

Southampton's top performers this season

One of those faces is Mateus Fernandes, who has looked lively for his lowly side even as games have slipped out of their grasp.

He was a standout performer during Southampton’s recent 3-1 loss at Old Trafford with three shots tallied up on Andre Onana’s shaky goal alongside two successful dribbles being registered, whilst the promising Portuguese midfielder also assisted Paul Onuachu’s late header away at Nottingham Forest last time out as the Saints flickered into life at the death.

Away from the Saints number 18, there has also been the occasional brilliance of youth product Tyler Dibling in attack who has managed to pick up two Premier League goals, whilst Kyle Walker-Peters has also threatened to get back to his blistering best.

Even in a Southampton side that has only mustered up a pitiful 15 top-flight strikes, Walker-Peters has still collected two assists, with a number of clubs reportedly circling for his services now amidst talk he will turn down any contract extension put forward to him.

Juric will hope he can keep a firm grip on the 5 foot 8 full-backs this month – away from all this speculation – but the Croat is unlikely to put up much of a fight to hold onto another defender on the contrary.

The latest on Charlie Taylor's future at Southampton

As per Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas earlier this month, Charlie Taylor is one figure Juric will be looking to offload this January, with other names on Thomas’ list looking to exit St Mary’s being Maxwel Cornet and Ben Brereton Diaz, as the latter now finds himself on loan at Sheffield United.

Therefore, Taylor could be the next fringe presence to be moved on, considering he has barely featured for the South Coast side this season after moving to the newly promoted team from Burnley last window.

Indeed, the ex-Clarets man has only started two times for his relegation-doomed outfit in the Premier League, with his last showing in the league seeing him introduced into the game at the half-time interval, only for the Saints to be resoundingly trounced 5-0 by Brentford.

Whilst he is by no means the only individual guilty of being an underperformer when you consider Southampton’s rock-bottom status, his steep wage will also be another major factor as to why there’s an increased hunger to get him off the books this January.

Looking at the table above, away from his poor defensive numbers, Taylor also surprisingly rakes in a hefty £30k-per-week pay packet, which means he earns more than both the aforementioned Walker-Peters and Fernandes.

The far brighter pair both earn £20k-per-week away from Taylor’s high earnings, with the Saints defender’s wage costs over the full year coming in at an extortionate £1.5m despite such a lack of game-time.

Therefore, it makes a lot of sense why Southampton want to get rid of the 31-year-old defender this month, as Juric attempts everything in his power to boost spirits to try and build some positive form.

Chelsea player ratings vs Everton: Moises Caicedo's majestic! Ecuadorian bosses it as unbeatable Robert Sanchez has his best day as a Blue

Enzo Maresca's side edged out the Toffees at Stamford Bridge as they kept themselves right in the mix for Champions League qualification

Chelsea managed to cling on and secure a vital 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday, with Robert Sanchez forced into a couple of big saves after Nicolas Jackson had given the hosts a first-half lead.

The Blues were by far the better team in the first period, as they managed to progress the ball quickly through Everton's midfield without losing the control Enzo Maresca clearly demands from his side. Their reward came in the 27th minute, when Trevoh Chalobah stepped in to dispossess a studious Beto. From there, Enzo Fernandez quickly got the ball into Nicolas Jackson's feet, who turned and fired home from 25 yards out.

Rather than press home their advantage, Chelsea allowed the visitors to grow into the game. Sanchez was called into action as the Toffees pushed forward searching for an equaliser, first making a diving stop from Beto's snapshot on the hour before denying a Dwight McNeil volley with an acrobatic save towards the end to preserve his clean sheet.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Robert Sanchez (8/10):

Smart stop to deny a Beto snapshot on the hour. Made two more crucial saves to spare Chelsea's blushes.

    Moises Caicedo (8/10):

An all-action display from the moonlighting midfielder. Hard in the tackle as always, and seamlessly slotted back into midfield in the second half.

    Trevoh Chalobah (7/10):

Picked Beto's pocket in the build-up to the opener. Never looked rushed. Could be making this position his own, finally.

    Levi Colwill (7/10):

The senior partner in a burgeoning partnership. Dependable.

    Marc Cucrella (7/10):

The final piece in a solid back-four performance by the Blues. Timed his tackles well, and stung Pickford's gloves with a long-range effort.

Progressed the ball into Jackson's feet to facilitate the first goal. Calm and measured in the first half, lost control in the second.

    Cole Palmer (4/10):

Peripheral again. When he did get on the ball, was liable to force himself down blind allies.

    Pedro Neto (6/10):

    Nicolas Jackson (7/10):

Finally got his goal. Lost his way in the second half, getting caught in possession and inviting pressure.

    Noni Madueke (7/10):

Made a bright start and looked threatening throughout. Forced multiple top-quality saves out of Pickford.

United supporters may finally have the chance to bid a proper farewell to one of the club’s most loyal servants, as the Spaniard is set to return to Old Trafford for a special pre-season clash. Now 34, De Gea is expected to feature for his current club Fiorentina in a high-profile friendly scheduled for Saturday, August 9, marking what could be a poignant homecoming two years after his abrupt exit.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After leaving Manchester, De Gea spent a season away from competitive football before returning to the professional stage by signing with Fiorentina. He has since found a new lease of life in Italy, impressing in Serie A and playing a key role in Fiorentina’s push for Champions League qualification. Ironically, since his departure, United have faced challenges in replacing their former No.1. Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana was brought in from Inter Milan for a fee of £43.8 million, but he has failed to find his feet at Old Trafford.

  • WHAT MANCHESTER UNITED SAID

Jason Wilcox, Manchester United’s technical director, said: “This final pre-season fixture is key to our preparations for the 2025/26 campaign – it will ensure the players have all had competitive game-time, against top opposition, in different environments, including Old Trafford, before the Premier League resumes.

“We have worked closely with Ruben [Amorim] and his coaching staff to put together a schedule of exciting and competitive fixtures that create the best conditions for the team to prepare. This includes utilising some of the leading sporting facilities in the US, playing against strong opponents, and creating opportunities for as many fans as possible to see the team live in Sweden, the US, and, with this final fixture, back home at the Theatre of Dreams.”

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The upcoming clash will mark the first meeting between Manchester United and Fiorentina since the 1999-2000 Champions League group stages. On that occasion, Fiorentina secured a 2-0 win in Florence, while United responded in the reverse fixture with a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Andy Cole, Roy Keane, and Dwight Yorke.

There is some good news for the Hammers, though, namely their imminent full agreement for Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson – who they’ve managed to sign on loan for the rest of the campaign despite rumoured competition from the likes of Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Bournemouth, Everton and Tottenham.

West Ham are also believed to be in the market for a new defender, with the likes of Adam Webster and Victor Lindelof linked, so this could be one to watch ahead of the deadline.

There have also been murmurs of West Ham interest in Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton, and they’ve been seriously pursuing FC Lorient starlet Eli Junior Kroupi over these past few days.

West Ham now "unlikely" to sign Eli Junior Kroupi on deadline day

ExWHUemployee shared news last night that West Ham were confident they could strike a deal for Kroupi, but that may not have to wait until the summer.

As per Claret & Hugh’s Sean Whetstone, West Ham are now “unlikely” to sign Kroupi by 11pm, and a deal for the France Under-19 international with 10 goals in all competitions this season could have to be postponed until later this year – provided another club doesn’t come at the end of this window.

West Ham did make a bid for Kroupi, totalling in excess of £30 million, but Ferguson may now be their only forward signing of the winter.

Liverpool could axe £55k-a-week player who Slot’s grown frustrated with

Liverpool are now willing to offload a player who Arne Slot has grown frustrated with this summer.

Liverpool transfer news

The summer window may be some time away, but that’s not stopping the Reds from being linked with a host of players as they look to further strengthen their squad ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

VfB Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller has been mentioned as an option for Liverpool, with the 23-year-old a player who could come in and add more quality in front of the defence. He has averaged 1.5 tackles per game in the German Bundesliga across 21 appearances this season.

VfB Stuttgart's Josha Vagnoman celebrates scoring their fourth goal with Angelo Stiller and Ermedin Demirovic

A new centre-back will be needed in the summer in order to ease the workload on Virgil van Dijk, with Crystal Palace and England ace Marc Guehi emerging as a rumoured option. However, he wouldn’t be available on the cheap, so the Reds would have to break the bank to snap him up.

Similarly, a left-back may also be needed by the end of the campaign, with Andy Robertson showing signs of being past his best. Girona’s Miguel Gutierrez has been among those linked with Liverpool.

Liverpool willing to sell attacking star

On the outgoing front, Liverpool could look to sell Luis Diaz in the summer transfer window, bringing an end to his three-and-a-half-year stay at the club. There are also doubts over the futures of Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota, with potential wholesale changes on the horizon.

According to Anfield Watch, “Slot has become frustrated with the Colombian as the season has progressed”, suggesting that he doesn’t see a long-term future for him at the club.

Liverpool's Luis Diaz in action with Nottingham Forest'sMurillo

Diaz has been an important player for Liverpool since his switch from FC Porto in January 2022, with the winger scoring eight goals in 17 Premier League starts this season. Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp heaped praise on him during their time working together:

“He’s a top player. He’s a top, top, world-level player. It’s a joy for me to work with Luís every day, and I’m more than happy that we decided to sign him in January.”

The £55,000-a-week Diaz has also struggled at times against low blocks in his new central attacking role, arguably struggling to adjust to a new position when opponents sit deep.

The Colombian’s finishing has been criticised in the past during his left-sided days, with many feeling he wasn’t ever at the level of Sadio Mane at his peak, and at 28, he isn’t getting any younger.

Feb 8, 2025

The idea of Liverpool retaining the services of Diaz is certainly no bad thing considering what a tricky, hard-working footballer he is, but it is easy to see why Slot could be eyeing a proper centre-forward in place of him in the summer, especially as his current contract expires in 2027.

    WHAT NEXT?

Aside from subtle, or not so subtle, jibes, Dias will hope to lead City to FA Cup glory when they take on Crystal Palace at Wembley on Saturday.

Solskjaer thought Man Utd had the "next Carrick", but they sold him for £9m

Ole Gunnar Solskjær is a manager in Manchester United history who simply doesn’t get the flowers he deserves after the job he oversaw during his time at Old Trafford.

The former Red Devils striker took over back in December 2018 after the dismissal of José Mourinho, stabilising the ship and leading the club to their best Premier League finish in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

The Norwegian led the club to a second-placed finish in 2020/21, before being dismissed just a couple of months into the following campaign, spending nearly three years at them.

Solskjaer achieved a 55% win rate during his time as manager, averaging 1.9 points per game within his tenure, leading the club in the right direction before his own dismissal from the Theatre of Dreams.

He worked closely alongside another former player at Old Trafford, with his assistant manager another former player who was certainly underrated during his playing career.

Michael Carrick’s time at Manchester United

Midfielder Michael Carrick was appointed as Solskjaer’s assistant during the Norwegian’s spell in Manchester, taking the leap into management after his super professional career as a player.

The Englishman joined the Red Devils way back in 2006 in a £13m deal from fellow top-flight side Tottenham Hotspur – a fee that would prove to be a bargain given his time at United.

Carrick would go on to make 464 appearances for the club over a 12-year stint in the North West, ending his career at the club before venturing into management – eventually becoming temporary manager after Solskjaer’s sacking.

During his time as a player, the now 43-year-old won five league titles, one Europa League and one Champions League, along with 11 other trophies – offering a consistent presence during Sir Alex’s reign.

He often doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his time at United, often being overlooked by many for his work ethic and superb passing ability, which often saw him register countless assists.

However, the club appear to have already sold one player who could emulate Carrick’s success at the club, potentially living to regret his departure – especially for such a minimal transfer fee.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

The Carrington academy setup has been infamous for producing a conveyor belt of talent, demonstrated by the Class of 92, with all of the graduates cementing themselves in Red Devils’ history.

The current first-team also highlights how impressive the youth setup is in Manchester, with the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho just two players who have developed through the ranks and made an impact under Ruben Amorim.

However, one player who may have been sold too prematurely was midfielder James Garner, who had huge hopes of being a success with his boyhood club after breaking through during Solskjaer’s period in charge.

The academy graduate would only make seven first-team appearances, but it was enough for the Norwegian to rave about his displays, dubbing the youngster “the next Michael Carrick” – high praise indeed given his compatriot’s spell with the Red Devils.

He would spend 18 months on loan at Nottingham Forest, catching the eye with his box-to-box displays, registering eight goals and 10 assists over his two separate loan spells at the City Ground.

However, his long-standing affiliation with his boyhood side would come to an end in the summer of 2022, joining Everton on a permanent basis for an initial £9m – a bargain given his form at Goodison Park.

Garner has since made 69 appearances for the Toffees, showcasing his versatility, operating in the middle of the park, as well as right-back but still thriving despite the unnatural role.

The 23-year-old has been restricted to just six league appearances this campaign due to injury, but has still managed to impress, providing a beautiful pinpoint pass to Beto in the 4-0 win over Leicester City.

The £9m fee now appears to be way too cheap given his recent success away from Old Trafford, potentially having a huge role to play under Amorim during his time in charge.

However, their loss now appears to be Everton’s gain, with Garner looking like the next in a long line of academy players which the hierarchy have offloaded too soon.

    TELL ME MORE

The evening began brightly for Al-Nassr, with Sadio Mane drawing first blood just three minutes after kick-off. A calamitous error at the back by Abdulelah Al-Amri gifted possession to the Senegalese forward, who calmly slotted past Predrag Rajkovic to give the home side an early advantage.

Mane was a constant thorn in the side of the Al-Ittihad defence and nearly made it 2-0 midway through the first half, only for his curling effort to drift narrowly over the crossbar. The second goal eventually arrived before the break when the ex-Liverpool man turned provider, picking out Ayman Yahya with a precise pass that the winger lashed into the net, giving Al-Nassr what looked like a comfortable cushion heading into the interval.

Al-Ittihad came out with renewed purpose after the break and made their intentions clear with a relentless attacking approach. Within just seven minutes of the restart, the visitors had not only halved the deficit but drawn level. Karim Benzema, always a threat with his movement, rose above two defenders to meet a pinpoint cross and headed home emphatically. Before Al-Nassr could regain their composure, N’Golo Kante stunned the home fans with a thunderous strike from the edge of the box.

From that point on, Al-Ittihad seized control and continued to dominate possession and territory, pinning Al-Nassr deep in their own half for large spells. In the 94th minute, Houssem Aouar delivered the sucker-punch to make it 3-2 to the Saudi Pro League leaders. Just before the final whistle, tempers flared between the two sides and Moussa Diaby was given the marching orders.

    THE MVP

While Ronaldo faltered, Mane was Al-Nassr's standout performer. With a goal and an assist, the former Liverpool forward was at the heart of every positive attacking move for the hosts. His pace, dribbling, and intelligent positioning consistently troubled the opposition’s backline. Had he been more clinical, Mane might have snatched a late equaliser.

  • THE BIG LOSER

In a match billed as one of the Saudi Pro League’s headline fixtures, much was expected from Ronaldo. However, the Portuguese icon endured one of his quietest performances in recent memory. He failed to make any significant impact in the final third, and his attempts from range were more of a spectacle for the wrong reasons than a serious threat to the goal.

This defeat could have serious implications for Al-Nassr’s ambitions of returning to the AFC Champions League. Their next challenge comes in the form of an away trip to Al-Akhdoud on Monday – a fixture that now carries even greater significance. With the top three guaranteed continental competition next season and their title hopes all-but over, Al-Nassr cannot afford another slip-up if they are to keep pace in the race for qualification.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Van de Beek has been enjoying regular football again at Girona after moving to the Catalan club from United for just £500,000 last summer. The Dutchman endured a nightmare four-year spell at Old Trafford after his 2020 move from Ajax as he made just 62 appearances and scored two goals for the club. However, looking back on his time in Manchester, Van de Beek feels that he did all he could to make the move a success, but circumstances conspired against him.

  • WHAT DONNY VAN DE BEEK SAID

Speaking to , Van de Beek said: "I was with Ajax at a training camp in Austria. After a training session, I was recovering in the hotel spa when my agent phoned. He told me United had called and that talks were underway. I said, 'Just do it'. It was honestly incredible to be there. I remember my first training sessions—I had so much energy in my body. Being at such a big club was fantastic. I even scored in my first Premier League game, which was a great feeling.

"I think I deserved more chances, especially in my first year. I didn’t play all the time, but when I did, I had some good games. I was convinced I would get more opportunities. I felt good, and thought, ‘Okay, my time will come’ but for some reason, it didn’t happen. It was tough because sometimes you want more chances, but it’s not always in your hands.
