Arsenal fans on Tierney playing Villarreal

Many Arsenal fans have been left to buzz as Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Kieran Tierney is in contention to play in the UEFA Europa League.

As per the official website of the Emirates Stadium faithful, the Spanish manager said that the former Celtic star did not need the surgery that they thought he needed, and so may be in contention to play again this season much earlier than originally anticipated.

Tierney is such an important player for the Gunners, as they clearly miss his athleticism and attacking threat down the left flank when he is not playing, having to fit central midfielder Granit Xhaka in there in recent games in the Premier League against Fulham and Everton respectively, in which they have dropped points in both.

Arteta admitted he isn’t sure if the Scot will be ready to face Villarreal, but he is at least in with a chance.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Abraham update

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to an update regarding Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham on social media.

Reports last month claimed that Villa remain ‘admirers’ of the 23-year-old ahead of the summer window.

The striker scored 26 goals in 40 appearances in the Midlands while on loan during the 2018/19 season, helping the club back into the top flight through the playoffs.

Abraham hasn’t featured for the Blues since the end of February, though, with speculation mounting over a potential Villa Park return.

Birmingham Live ran a Q&A with Football.London’s Chelsea correspondent Adam Newson on Thursday.

Newson believes Abraham would be open to a return to Villa, if the circumstances are right. He then added that Chelsea could be hoping to receive £40m+ for the forward.

Villa fans react

@AVFC_News shared the story along with Newson’s quote of Abraham being open to a Villa return on Twitter on Thursday morning.

This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with many seemingly keen on a summer deal.

Gillespie makes Lundstram exit claim

Former Sheffield United midfielder Keith Gillespie has exclusively told Football FanCast that the Blades’ “poor” campaign could see them struggle to cash-in on some of their players this summer.

Since losing heavily at Chelsea back in November, United have been rooted to the bottom of the Premier League for the entire campaign, and are likely to have their relegation back to the Championship confirmed in the coming weeks.

Sheffield United finished 8th in their first season back in the top-flight in what proved a well-oiled machine under Chris Wilder, but they’ve struggled at both ends of the pitch this term.

The Blades have scored the fewest amount in the division – with only Southampton and West Brom shipping more than their 52 in the Premier League.

Following the recent departure of Wilder, it promises to be a summer of change at Bramall Lane, especially with a host of players out of contract this summer, including one of last season’s major success stories in John Lundstram, and Gillespie believes their lacklustre campaign could affect their transfer plans.

He told Football FanCast: “In terms of the performances this season, because Sheffield United haven’t won games and have been poor this season, clubs are going to go ‘there’s nobody really I want to pick from Sheffield United’ that’s going to improve their side. Last season [John Lundstram] he was fantastic, popped up with a lot of goals, but this season has been more difficult.

“I know he’s out of contract, but he’s been a very good signing for him and somebody that definitely they would want to hold on to to help them get back to the Premier League. But if somebody comes knocking from the Premier League, he isn’t turning that down.

“You want to be playing as much Premier League football as possible, because it is a short career, so you can understand players making that decision.”

With no permanent manager and some of their best players possibly eyeing moves away from Bramall Lane, by the time Sheffield United get their Championship campaign underway in early-August, they could have very different look about them.

Celtic: Howe interested in Hoops job

Celtic’s search for a new manager has taken on an exciting lease of life over the last week or so with the Bhoys really stepping up their hunt to replace Neil Lennon.

A number of managers have been touted with taking over but there is one name that’s now seemingly at the top of their list.

What’s the word?

Journalist Alan Nixon reported earlier this week that Eddie Howe was a serious candidate to become Celtic’s new manager.

That information has now also been reported by The Scottish Sun. They claim that Howe is indeed in the frame to take over, but they have also revealed the 43-year-old’s stance on heading to Parkhead.

They state that the former Bournemouth boss is seriously interested in succeeding Lennon in Glasgow.

Howe has even started his own due-diligence on the behind-the-scenes structure of the club and has sounded out contacts within the game who have close ties to Celtic.

Having sought advice from those connections, he is ready to return to management and become the new Bhoys manager.

Fantastic news for Celtic

Over the last week or so the Hoops hierarchy haven’t particularly had an easy time of it when trying to find Lennon’s replacement.

Jesse Marsch has been ruled out of the running to come to Scotland while Chris Wilder is facing pay-off issues and interest from Burnley.

As for Roy Keane, he now looks less likely to arrive after seemingly being the favourite a week ago.

However, they have received a few boosts in the last few days with Lucien Favre and now Howe reportedly interested in becoming the next Celtic boss.

If those two names are at the forefront of Dermot Desmond’s thinking then fans should be completely delighted. Celtic podcaster Paul John Dykes revealed last week that Keane’s potential arrival had gone down like a led balloon among the supporters.

However, Favre and Howe have achieved a lot more and they’ve also not had ten years away from management.

Favre had a win rate of 61.82% before losing his job with Borussia Dortmund in December while Howe’s achievements make for impressive reading.

In two separate spells, he took Bournemouth from League Two to the Premier League, cementing themselves in England’s top-flight.

He is meticulous on the training ground and is known for developing and using young domestic talent; something that would undoubtedly benefit the Hoops.

Should Desmond bring him to Parkhead, he’d be a brilliant appointment, one who could breathe fresh life into a decrepit think tank.

Rob Lee makes Brighton vs Newcastle claim

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who scored 45 goals for Newcastle United, believes the only reason Brighton will have a psychological edge over the Magpies on Saturday is because they won their last game, and thinks it’ll be two completely different teams facing off at the Amex.

Lee believes Newcastle will be feeling like they won their last game, however, because of the nature in which Jamaal Lascelles’ equaliser came about in the final seconds.

Brighton have become one of the best sides to watch under Graham Potter as they play attractive and attacking football, and Lee believes it will be two polar opposite ways of playing on Saturday evening.

Speaking on what the two teams’ last result will mean for Saturday and his expectations for the crunch game, Lee told FFC exclusively:

“I think the only reason they’ve got a psychological edge is because they won their last game and you always look back at your last result, but we didn’t lose our last game. So, we can look back at our last game like we won because of the late goal.

“I think it’s two teams that play different football. They probably play one of the best styles of football in the league but it’s two teams that have the same problem, they can’t score goals.

“They’ll play good football, and you know that they’ll try and play through you but, they have the same problem as us and that is they can’t score goals.”

Brighton put three past Newcastle in the reverse fixture, which is the most goals the Seagulls have scored in a single Premier League game this season.

Newcastle could find themselves in the bottom three before they kick-off on Saturday evening if Fulham beat Leeds tonight.

Celtic’s Ryan Christie successor inbound?

Celtic may be without a manager but transfer preparations at Parkhead are well and truly underway.

What’s the word?

The Hoops have already wrapped up a deal to bring Liam Shaw to Glasgow but two other players who could join are more youngsters from the EFL; Kyle Joseph and Kwadwo Baah.

However, they’re now looking to sign an explosive winger in the shape of Aaron-Salem Boupendza.

That’s according to 90min, who suggest that Celtic are one of a number of teams vying for the winger’s signature.

Boupendza currently plays in Turkey for Hatayspor where he’s been seriously impressive. Arsenal are one of the sides chasing his signature with the Bhoys facing plenty of competition from south of the border.

Southampton, Tottenham, Leicester, West Ham, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Wolves are all monitoring his development while Rangers are also an interested party.

Christie upgrade

This will be music to the ears of Hoops supporters; Boupendza should be an upgrade on the much-maligned Ryan Christie.

The Scot has been in shocking form lately, scoring just twice in his last 25 outings for Celtic. For someone who found the net on 20 occasions last term, he has been abject at best.

Christie’s end product has often been left wanting and that has never been more evident than in the 1-0 defeat to Ross County.

He played as a striker next to Odsonne Edouard but spurned four chances, including an opportunity from just a matter of yards out that not only cleared the crossbar, but also the stand behind the goal.

With that in mind, signing someone like Boupendza would undoubtedly help Celtic. He is capable of playing on either flank, as well as through the middle as a central striker.

He has been electrifying for Hatayspor this season, scoring 18 times in just 28 outings. He’s failed to register an assist but with players like David Turnbull and James Forrest in the side, that should be of no concern.

Vital to the 24-year-old’s style of play is his dribbling. When one-on-one with the defender, Boupendza often gets the better of them. He has attempted 109 dribbles this season, completing 69 at a rate of 2.7 per match.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-transfer-news-onuachu-edouard-dembele-turnbull” title=”The latest Celtic news and views!”]

For context, no player at Celtic has recorded more than the 1.6 dribbles amassed by Tom Rogic and Edouard.

Clearly, he could offer something different to the new manager at Paradise. On top of that, he could even be a more potent goal threat than someone like Christie.

As Celtic try to reclaim their dominance of the SPFL, finding more goals will be of utmost importance. Boupendza would offer than in abundance.

AND in other news, Forget Christie: Celtic must unleash rarely-seen 23 y/o next term, he’s “outstanding”…

Aston Villa: Fans react to image of Wesley

Many Aston Villa fans are over the moon after seeing an image of striker Wesley looking like he is back to full training with the squad.

It was the club who posted the image of the striker on Twitter, supported with the caption ‘Wesley has got that #FridayFeeling!’

Villa have been hopeful that he will return early in 2021 as there is currently a lot of pressure on the shoulders of Ollie Watkins. Fellow striker Keinan Davis has not scored a goal in the top flight and Watkins, at times, has been the only recognised striker currently available for selection.

It has been sad to see the sheer length of time the Brazilian has been out. He has been injured for over a year now and this has meant the player has already missed no less than 49 games (Transfermarkt). Hopefully this image means that the player will be close to a return, and he will add some great depth to the Villa squad and could be a vital asset in making sure the club finish in the top ten this season.

Rangers: Billy Gilmour will have them full of regret

It hasn’t all been plain sailing to the top for Steven Gerrard’s side, but Rangers find themselves at the summit of the Scottish Premiership, 23 points clear of Celtic.

If you cast your minds back a couple of weeks ago, you could have been forgiven for thinking Rangers had big plans in the pipeline to match their title ambitions.

Now, admittedly not much has changed in terms of the league table, but if there is one criticism that can be directed at Ross Wilson, it’s the club’s inability to make a high-profile signing.

That happened to be a young 19-year-old by the name of Billy Gilmour. If anyone could lure a player of Gilmour’s potential to the 54-time Scottish champions it was Wilson, who also brought in the likes of Jack Simpson and Scott Wright, and a return to his boyhood club via a short-term loan deal seemed to be on the cards.

Ultimately, Chelsea decided to perform a transfer U-turn after the former Rangers starlet impressed new boss Thomas Tuchel in training.

However, had Wilson pushed harder for his signature, those at the Bridge may have been prepared to budge, as the central midfielder has been absent from three of the past four Premier League squads and has not featured since the 3-1 win over Luton Town in the FA Cup.

When asked about Gilmour upon his arrival, Tuchel said: “I have a good impression of Billy.

“He is a very strategic guy, very, very high level of game understanding.

“Very good in the first contact, very, very clever in positioning.

“We will see if he has the physical level to play at the highest level, we will see that, but he is super quick with his feet and decision-making.

“Very, very good in positioning so for me, we have 21 or 22 field players available, and playing in three competitions there is no need for us to get rid of players.”

Since switching Ibrox for the lofty heights of Stamford Bridge, he has settled rather nicely into English football, having made 17 senior appearances for the first team. It’s a shame the same can’t be said for Bafana-Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu, who has lacked any real confidence under Gerrard and struggled to fill the boots of Steven Davis this season, playing just 149 minutes of football.

Had they signed Gilmour, it’s hard to suggest he wouldn’t have been an immediate upgrade on Zungu.

Despite his age, in terms of sheer numbers alone, the Scottish U21 international is light years ahead of the 28-year-old. The highly-rated teenager is currently averaging more tackles and interceptions per 90 across all competitions and commits fewer fouls than Zungu, via WhoScored, whilst he also boasts a better passing accuracy too.

It’s evidence of Tuchel’s verdict that the £10k-a-week earning Gilmour is quick both on the ball and in his mind too, and would have offered a sense of control and discipline to the Rangers midfield. The fact Zungu has barely featured this season says everything about just where he ranks in Gerrard’s plans at the moment, and so the Chelsea youngster would surely have fancied his chances of muscling in ahead of him and getting more game-time.

He could, perhaps, have returned to Ibrox on a short-term basis had the Gers conducted their business earlier in the latest transfer window but they may have missed their chance to sign him as it’s unlikely he will be short of suitors in the summer.

Premier League club Leicester City were among the parties previously credited with an interest in the former Rangers kid and could return for him in the near future.

Gilmour’s arrival in the January window would have given Gerrard an added option in the middle of the park, but Chelsea’s late stance means the Gers have missed out on a talented starlet for the rest of the campaign.

Steve Howey discusses James Justin injury

Ahead of what will be a huge match for Leicester City in their chase for the title, they have been dealt a major injury blow. Brendan Rodgers confirmed that the problem James Justin picked up during their narrow FA Cup win over Brighton is the team’s worst fears.

Speaking to the club’s website, the manager revealed that the 22-year-old has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and will be undergoing surgery.

Since signing for the Foxes in 2019, Justin has been a revelation in the Leicester defence. This season in particular, the versatile right-back has been a stalwart for Rodgers, playing every single minute of Premier League football so far. In that time, he contributed nine clean sheets, two goals and two assists, as per Transfermarkt.

But this is now Justin’s season over. Steve Howey spoke with Football FanCast about the impact of his injury and how it will affect Leicester moving into their clash with Liverpool this afternoon.

“It’s a huge blow,” the former Foxes man said. “I think when you’ve got a player that you can rely on week in, week out, not only to play every minute, but to play every minute with the high quality that he gives Leicester then of course he’s going to be a big miss.”

Justin’s ability to play on either flank as well as in midfield has made him an indispensable cog in Rodgers’ well-oiled Leicester machine. According to Transfermarkt, the youngster has played just five Premier League games in his natural position at right-back. For the other 18 matches, Justin has played at left-back, left and right midfield and even centrally.

The boss has no choice but to rely on Ricardo Pereira, with Timothy Castagne still also sidelined due to injury. With an ACL injury, Justin will be out for a number of months and Leicester must work out how to cope without him.

City are currently in a rich vein of form, having won their last 11 matches in all competitions, thanks to undroppable stars Ilkay Gundogan, Joao Cancelo, Phil Foden, John Stones and transformative summer signing Ruben Dias, among others.

Romano, sharing an update with supporters, claims the Sky Blues are now planning for next year after manager Guardiola seemingly ruled out any January acquisitions (The Independent).

The Italian journalist says City will be targeting ‘interesting’ and ‘young’ players – and who these names could be has been left open to interpretation.
