Celtic closing in on Benfica’s Jota

Celtic have enjoyed a lung-busting start to the new season but life under Ange Postecoglou came crashing back down to earth with a bang on Sunday.

The Hoops endured a dismal defeat in the Old Firm derby and they are now left chasing the pack again in the league.

What’s the word?

Postecoglou’s response to losing to the club’s biggest rivals last weekend is to strengthen the club’s attack.

Indeed, after failing to score versus Rangers, that decision does contain an element of sense.

Celtic have been trying to sign Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis but while that deal grows quieter, another becomes louder.

That’s because the Bhoys are on the verge of signing Benfica winger, Jota, on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The news was reported by journalist Stephen McGowan who took to Twitter late on Sunday to note the following 12-word update on the transfer: “Celtic medical for Benfica winger Jota on Monday. Loan with buy option.”

Supporters buzzing

It’s rare a manager admits their mistakes but after Celtic slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Ibrox last weekend, that’s what Postecoglou did.

The Australian fielded Kyogo Furuhashi on the left with Odsonne Edouard through the middle. However, when the Frenchman missed a golden opportunity to score from just a matter of yards out in the first half, it looked like the wrong call.

That was backed up by the instant impact Kyogo had when he moved into the centre following Edouard’s withdrawal.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/postecoglou-hoops-bhoys-jenz-larsson-nisbet” title=”Check out the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Speaking at full-time, the boss said he should have started the Japanese frontman through the middle from the off but admitted a lack of wide options with James Forrest out injured made his decision for him.

Therefore, by signing Jota this summer, it could allow Celtic to play Kyogo as the lone striker on a more regular basis.

He’s started his career in Glasgow with a bang, scoring seven goals in his first nine outings, including a wonderful hat-trick against Dundee. The Japan international has become an instant fan favourite so to see him in positions where he’ll score more goals will only delight the Parkhead faithful.

Though, the arrival of Jota has more positives than that. The 22-year-old is a wily and tricky character, cut from the same cloth as Israeli attacker Liel Abada.

He only scored two goals on loan at Real Valladolid in La Liga last term but produced 0.9 dribbles per match from just seven starts. Given his limited amount of football, that’s a pretty handy total.

A left-footed player, he’d have the potential to offer a similar threat to the one Ryan Christie caused when he played on that flank against Dundee. The Scot caused havoc with his crossing from the wing and registered three assists.

Considering Jota’s lack of experience, he might not hit the ground running immediately, but if he gives Kyogo more of a license in attack, supporters will be delighted to see him pull on the famous green and white hoops.

Tait wants to concentrate on shorter formats

Shaun Tait, the Australian fast bowler, is not looking for a return to Test cricket any time soon and instead wants to focus on the limited-overs formats

Shaun Tait, the Australian fast bowler, is not looking for a return to Test cricket any time soon and instead wants to focus on the limited-overs formats. Tait’s one-day international record is impressive and he is also a destructive Twenty20 bowler, while his efforts in his Test appearances have been disappointing.”I bowl those express deliveries and the zooming yorkers which are much more effective in one-day cricket,” Tait told . “I don’t think I’m in the Test bracket now. [The public] expect me to do well in one-dayers and Twenty20s and I want to do that on a consistent basis once I make a comeback into the national fold.”Tait made his return to competitive cricket in the ongoing tri-series during Australia A’s tour of India after an eight-month self-imposed absence. He has taken five wickets at 17.40 from three matches. Tait said he had come to know his limitations and did not want to stretch himself too far.”I have played three Test matches with a bowling average of 60 plus; I don’t think that’s quite Test class,” he said. “My one-day average is far better [23.45] and so is my Twenty20 record, so I want to concentrate on those.”Australia A and India A play the final league match of the series on Wednesday before meeting again in the final on Friday. Tait could resume his first-class career when South Australia’s Sheffield Shield campaign kicks off in early October.

Baptiste impressed for Bolton vs Wigan

Bolton’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end on Tuesday night as they were beaten 5-4 on penalties by Wigan in the League Cup.

Wanderers made their way through to the second round by beating Championship side Barnsley on penalties earlier this month, but fortune was not on their side for the second time as Nathan Delfouneso blazed over from the spot to see them crash out of the competition.

Ian Evatt’s side are unbeaten in League One after starting the campaign with two wins and two draws – both 3-3 – and will be disappointed that they have tasted defeat for the first time since last season.

Despite losing, though, there was one player who could give Evatt a selection headache ahead of their League One clash with fellow newly-promoted side Cambridge United on Saturday: Alex Baptiste.

The experienced central defender started Bolton’s first two matches of the campaign, which both ended 3-3, and was subsequently dropped for the following two games. It is hard to argue with the manager’s decision to take him out of the side after they conceded six goals in 180 minutes of football, but his performance against Wigan shows that he still has something to offer.

Per SofaScore, Baptiste was the highest-rated outfield player on the pitch for Bolton with a score of 7.5 for his display. The veteran enforcer and George Johnston (7.1) were the only players other than the goalkeeper Matt Gilks (8.7) to achieve a score higher than 6.8, which shows how he stood out.

Baptiste won 75% of his duels (6/8) in the match, including 100% of his three aerial battles to keep Wigan’s attackers at bay. He also made three tackles and four clearances, whilst no opposition player was able to dribble past him in the entire 90 minutes.

With 61 touches of the ball and a pass completion rate of 84%, Baptiste also showed that he could play out from the back competently. He completed six of his nine long passes, which shows that he was able to demonstrate his range of passing, playing it short and long when needed.

This performance could now give Evatt a selection headache ahead of the Cambridge game as Baptiste put in a strong defensive showing. At the end of the day, all the centre-back can do is produce impressive displays when called upon and hope that it earns him a place in the side at the weekend and this match was a great start.

Haseeb Hameed hits ton as Indian bowlers get solid workout

Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj pick up five wickets between them to earn the visitors a 91-run lead

For a better part of the last ten years, the Indians have preferred to play friendly tour games in the run-up to Test series overseas. The rigours of a first-class game that they have grown to appreciate in recent times are for days like Tuesday when they were given a proper workout by a potential opponent when the Test series starts.Haseeb Hameed, now 24, may be unrecognisable from the boyish avatar in 2016, when he broke through as a sprightly 19-year old in India . But all the traits that made him a classical Test opener in the making were on display in Chester-Le-Street on the second day of India’s tour fixture against the County Select XI. He made 112, his third century of the season and eighth overall, further justifying the selectors’ decision to pick him in England’s squad for the first two India Tests. For the record, the Indians took a 91-run lead, with the hosts finishing 220 for 9, with Avesh Khan ruled out of the remainder of the game due to a fractured left thumb.Related

Each of the Indian bowlers got a proper workout. After reducing the hosts to 56 for 4, shortly after lunch, Hameed was an epitome of composure and concentration. He focused on crease occupation for a better part of the first two sessions, before giving the Indians a glimpse of his free-flowing strokeplay in the final session. He was particularly aggressive against Axar Patel’s left-arm spin, hitting him for three successive boundaries to dash out of the sixties. Then, he carried on with the same tempo, lofting Ravindra Jadeja. In the nineties, he was kept honest as Jasprit Bumrah came steaming in for one last hurrah at the end of a long day, but Hameed didn’t show signs of nerves or desperation of getting to the impending landmark, eventually getting there calmly off 228 deliveries. The Indians were made to rue a missed opportunity after KL Rahul put down a chance behind the stumps off Patel. Hameed was on 60 when he was deceived in flight while looking to drive through the covers. He accounted for just over 50% of the runs the home team made and his 75-run partnership with Lyndon James was the highest of the day.Hameed’s footwork was crisp and unhurried. His judgment over which deliveries to play or leave, especially off Bumrah and Umesh Yadav in the morning session, immaculate. This was a statement without trying to make one – he wasn’t going to be bullied by an experienced attack. As the day wore on, he showed nimble footwork against spin. Before the Hameed show, the Indian pacers ran amok, raising prospects of enjoying a second hit at some stage during the day. While that wasn’t to be, they wouldn’t really complain at having a good workout against a batting line-up determined to prove themselves. Among them was one of India’s own, Washington Sundar, who missed making a mark in this game. Coming in at No. 4, Sundar lasted all of seven deliveries, prised out by a Mohammed Siraj lifter that he fended awkwardly to second slip.Jake Libby and Robert Yates were dismissed before Sundar, allowing Yadav and Bumrah to get onto the scoreboard. Libby’s indecisiveness cost him as he chopped on, while Yates poked at Bumrah’s away-going delivery to Rahul. As wickets fell around him, a resolute Hameed continue to grind his way through, taking 134 deliveries to raise his half-century.Bumrah and Yadav bowled five sharp overs each before and after lunch. While Bumrah bent his back and hit the deck hard, Yadav got the ball to move away, and to his credit, he made the batters play more than they left. Shardul Thakur, who had Hameed nicking behind, ended with 14-6-31-1. He pounded in over after over, mixing up full deliveries with skiddy short ones, causing the batters to weave and duck occasionally.Thakur had come close to picking up another wicket when James gloved a short delivery down the leg side, only for the ball to fly wide of a leaping Rahul down the leg side.Jadeja and Patel didn’t have much of a workload, mostly playing a holding role. Jadeja had a wicket to show for when he had debutant James Rew caught by Rohit Sharma at slip. Liam Patterson-White brought some late excitement to the proceedings when he took on India’s premier left-arm spinner, nonchalantly lofting him over the infield, then reverse-sweeping his way to some runs and having fun at the end of a hot day before being the last man out.As much as they would’ve been satisfied with how things panned out in the game, the Indians would’ve also been encouraged by the sight of their captain Virat Kohli, enjoying a hit at the nets a day after the BCCI said he was being rested from this game for a stiff back. At lunch, Kohli took throwdowns from Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour and specialist Nuwan Seneviratne from 18 yards. He also faced Sussex offspinner Jack Carson, with head coach Ravi Shastri observing the session from a distance. The development was a welcome one for the Indians, who will also concerned by the fitness of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who has a swollen hamstring. Also part of the nets was India’s most experienced fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who was back in action after picking up a hand injury on the final day of the World Test Championship final.

In a low-scoring match dominated by the opening bowler from both sides, Chad Soper’s career-best 6 for 41 trumped Nadeem Ahmed’s 4 for 50 as Papua New Guinea edged past Hong Kong by 14 runs in the second ODI and levelled the three-match series.PNG opted to bat first at the Mission Road Ground in Mong Kok and were dismissed for 201 in 45.5 overs after left-arm spinner Nadeem scythed through their top-order. Like Nadeem, Soper, too, dismissed the top-three, before adding three more to his tally to bowl Hong Kong out for 187 in 48.1 overs.PNG’s innings was built on two partnerships. First, Assad Vala, their captain, who top scored with 70, added 78 for the fourth wicket with Sese Bau to lift them from 39 for 3. Vala then shared a 43-run sixth-wicket partnership with Mahuru Dai. The association ended with Vala being stumped off Anshuman Rath, the left-arm spinner. He had faced 87 balls and pinged nine fours and two sixes. PNG’s innings lasted a further 67 balls after Vala’s dismissal, but they could only score 30 runs more.Rath finished with 3 for 28 in 10 overs. Aizaz Khan took two wickets and Ehsan Khan accounted for last man out Soper.Hong Kong had a few solid contributions from the middle order, but none of them could stay on to see the team through. Like PNG, Hong Kong could also string together only two partnerships of note. Nizakat Khan (33) and Rath (21) pulled them from 31 for 3 to 80 for 4. Shahid Wasif (45) and Ehsan Khan (27 not out) then joined hands for a 56-run sixth-wicket stand. The chase ended with the dismissal of Nadeem, who was bowled by John Reva, the right-arm medium pacer, for 1.Vala followed up his 70 with economical figures of 1 for 33 in 10 overs. Dai finished his quota with 2 for 42.The deciding ODI will take place on Tuesday at the same venue.

Spurs Could Sign New Dele Alli In £30m Warrior

When Tottenham Hotspur reached the Champions League final in 2019, it was supposed to be a watershed moment for the ambitious London outfit.

Mauricio Pochettino had crafted one of the most eye-catching and fluid teams in the Premier League and, despite the loss on that fateful day by the hand of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, the rich pool of talent tantalised green pastures over yonder.

Instead, the dismissal of Antonio Conte this year was the fourth permanent manager discarded in as many years, and the failure to qualify for European football this term has underscored the issues that the club is currently beset with.

Ange Postecoglou has now been appointed and supporters will eagerly anticipate how the Australian will bolster the squad this summer.

One of his first moves could be to seal a swoop for Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie, who has been linked with a departure from Camp Nou after just one season and has been reported by Spanish publication AS to be of interest to the Lilywhites.

As per the report, a fee of €35m (£30m) could be required to prise him away, and given his imposing physicality and tendency to progress play with his barging presence, he could suit English football and Postecoglou's system to a tee.

Should Tottenham sign Franck Kessie?

Dubbed a "warrior" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 60-cap Ivory Coast international won Serie A last term and LaLiga this season, making 43 appearances for Xavi's outfit but only starting seven times in the league, consequently discontented with life in Catalonia and ostensibly seeking an exit, with Spurs all too willing to enrich their ranks.

If he is managed aptly, Kessie could be moulded as Tottenham's next version of Dele Alli, with the England international suffering misfortune and a plummet from prominence over the past several seasons but unequivocally one of the most prodigious talents to ever grace Premier League soil.

Alli plundered 67 goals and 61 assists from 269 appearances for Spurs before losing his spark and being shipped out to Everton at the midpoint of the 21/22 campaign, having now completed an unsuccessful season-long loan move with Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas.

At his resounding best, Alli was lauded as a talent with the "world at his feet" by Frank Lampard and "very special" by Xavi – two former stars who know a thing or two about how to succeed as a first-rate midfielder.

The one-time MK Dons youngster was best suited to an attacking role deployed behind the all-encompassing talisman Harry Kane, almost a shadow striker at times, and wreaked havoc with his unflinching approach and devastating offensive potency.

Praised as an "amazing player" by former Spurs 'keeper Paul Robinson, Kessie can emulate this; he ranks among the top 12% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for both touches in the attacking box and progressive passes received per 90, as per FBref, driving forward just like the 37-cap England ace.

And while the former AC Milan gem has been a peripheral figure with La Blaugrana this year, 19 goals across his final two seasons in Serie A, complemented by clinching the Scudetto last term, illustrates a goal-scoring prowess and a "devastating" danger, as remarked by Antonio Cassano, to match Alli's – who posted 37 strikes across his first three top-flight campaigns.

Kessie's possible transfer to Tottenham could well be an unmitigated success, with Kane's superlative skill as one of football's most creative striking focal points – ranking among the top 10% of strikers for shot-creating actions and the top 4% for progressive passes per 90 – providing Kessie with the perfect platform to unleash the full might of his attacking arsenal.

Forging a battle for top four and a confident domestic cup run is imperative next year and with Kessie's signing, the return to the former free-flowing football that left the Spurs support in raucous rapture could return to cast aside the cobwebs of the 22/23 term and drape the curtain irrevocably on the recent woes.

Maintaining pressure still a challenge – Boult

Sunday was the third time New Zealand were denied parity by India’s lower order, but Trent Boult has said that the visitors are not doing much wrong

Sidharth Monga at Eden Gardens02-Oct-2016Sunday was the third time New Zealand were denied parity by India’s lower order, which has been crucial in a low-scoring series. In the first innings in Kanpur, India’s sixth wicket added 52 and the last 41. In response New Zealand lost their last five wickets for seven runs. In Kolkata, Wriddhiman Saha led the lower-order fightback, taking India from 200 for 6 to 316. In the second innings, India have exceeded those last two comebacks by converting 106 for 6 into 227 for 8. New Zealand’s leading bowler, Trent Boult, though, feels they are not doing much wrong against the lower order.”Not necessarily,” Boult said when asked if they could have done much differently to prevent another frustrating resistance from India’s lower order. “We are trying to apply the pressure for as long as we can and not let off at all throughout the whole innings. But we know and realise they are going to put partnerships together, and we just can’t afford to get frustrated by that. It is still a challenge as a bowling unit to not drift and release that pressure, but it is something we are trying to get much better at.”Some of it could be put down to the exhaustion in the heat. “I have to put these down as some of the tougher conditions I’ve ever played in in my career,” Boult said. “I’m not too sure what it looks like on TV, but it is pretty taxing. Obviously the dryness in the wicket and in the air is pretty tough. The last session is probably the easiest session in terms of heat. [But] You are just sapped by the time that comes around.”The guys did extremely well to put the balls in the areas we did and apply that pressure. It was spoken in the huddle that we weren’t just going to let them drift away with the game with a figure in mind. We wanted to put pressure on them and make them earn every run. I think we did very well.”Thanks to Jeetan Patel and BJ Watling’s batting at the start of the day and the six early wickets, New Zealand fought their way back, but perhaps it was that deficit that meant India weren’t under the pressure New Zealand would have wanted to put them under. It was mostly on day two that they let the game slip with India’s lower-order runs and their own collapses with rain and bad light around.”It’s very disappointing but that is done now and we can’t do anything about it,” Boult said of the second day. “They had some good conditions there last night to put us under pretty big pressure with the ball. Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who took five wickets] bowled very well, and that has played a big part in the game. But we are not just going to roll over, we’ve fought very nicely to get ourselves back in the position we are in now.”Boult said New Zealand would need every bit of skill with the bat to fight back again in this Test. “We have the guys with the ability to bat long periods of time,” Boult said. “In terms of the wicket there is a little bit of variation in bounce and that is obviously going to be in the back of a few of our minds. We have to take it small steps at a time. If we can tick off our goals of trying to bat for half a session, then a session and just keep them out there and try to build like that. Anything that is set is definitely achievable.”They could learn from Jeetan Patel’s innings in the morning, Boult said. “He did very well. It’s his first in a wee while and to come back and play an innings like that was good to watch. The rest of us can take a leaf out of his book and try to apply yourself like he did because they were valuable runs.”
