The greatest test that Gautam Gambhir passed was not only to survive the fourth day, but to come back on the fifth and renew the battle with complete concentration

Sidharth Monga in Napier30-Mar-2009

Mark Greatbatch batted for 655 minutes and 435 balls for his unbeaten 146 to save the Perth Test in 1988-89. It wasn’t too different from the innings Gautam Gambhir played – 643 minutes and 436 balls for 137 runs, to save the Napier Test.Greatbatch talks about how he set himself small targets. “You are following on, 290 behind, and it was about batting out time,” Greatbatch remembers. “[Set] little targets. An over meant four minutes, four overs were 15 minutes. Eight overs meant half an hour, and 15 were an hour.” Taking that formula forward, 15 overs would mean a drinks break, the same cycle repeated would mean a session break, and that repeated three times a day would mean stumps. For Gambhir, the cycles started with 74 minutes remaining on the third day. By the end of the fourth day, he had seen through four such drinks breaks, two session breaks and another two interruptions for stumps. He got breaks from the intense concentration by opting for a cap when the spinners operated together, and then switching to helmets as a fast bowler approached. He would have been a really tired man last night, physically, and more importantly, mentally. Suppressing his natural dominating game for more than seven hours and showing fierce focus to take India into the final day would have drained his mind. That was not the tough part, though. It was more difficult knowing that his job had not yet been completed – the team needed to bat through at least two more drinks breaks and two more session breaks to save the Test. He would need to get the adrenaline down, get a good night’s sleep, and then get himself up again. It was difficult to imagine how much more Gambhir could dig into. Did those reserves of concentration exist? It would have been tempting to take the easy route, though. To go for quick runs. No one would complain if he had got out. There were two of the best Test batsmen of this era around him, with another talented batsman to follow. The pitch was flat and Gambhir could have easily gone for quick runs. But he didn’t leave the job unfinished, rather he started it anew.In the first hour today, he added eight runs. In that first hour, Sachin Tendulkar got out as well. The team was still in deficit as the spinners kept tempting him with wide balls thrown up outside off. He still didn’t give in to the temptation. In the end, he added only 35 to his overnight 102. But runs didn’t matter today. Crucially he added 209 minutes to his 434 minutes of stay overnight. And that’s what mattered. Not long ago, Gambhir was an impetuous young man not doing justice to his quick footwork and wide array of strokes. There were technical flaws that the bowlers gleefully exploited. But he has taken care of the front foot that used to fall over. He may elbow a bowler now and then, but he has shown he can concentrate for long periods of time. After close to 11 of his finest hours in top-level cricket, Gambhir will be seen in a different light, the temperamental tough kid is left far behind. His indebted captain, Virender Sehwag, has taken the lead. “I think Gautam played an innings of a lifetime,” Sehwag said. “I can say that because hardly any player plays for almost 11 hours nowadays. He is the one who saved the game for us. I think we can call him the second Wall of the Indian cricket team. This one comes from north.”

EPL threaten Newcastle in takeover case

Kieran Maguire has given his reaction to a fresh revelation in Newcastle United’s recent takeover case.

The Lowdown: Premier League threat

As cited by BBC Sport, Daniel Jowell QC revealed that the Premier League had threatened to expel the Tyneside club from the division in their Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) case against the top flight over the stalled takeover deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium.

Representing Newcastle United, Jowell claimed that the Premier League ‘abused its position’ and effectively blocked the bid.

The Latest: Maguire on threat

Speaking to Football Insider, finance expert Maguire has now claimed that, should the Premier League go through with their threat, it would have had had costly ramifications. He said:

“This would have resulted in a very, very expensive and explosive legal case.

“You’d also have Newcastle fans marching on Premier League HQ. There is no justification in the mind of any right-minded fan for taking such action.

“But such is the entrenched position of both parties, for and against Newcastle’s new owners, that was the situation.

“So I think it was an idle threat, but a threat all the same. It was an extraordinary revelation, whichever way you look at it.”

The Verdict: Pressure piling up

There is clearly pressure being piled up on the Premier League for them to have come out with such a threat, which would be very difficult to push through anyway given yet another big legal battle with Newcastle which would have likely have followed.

Nonetheless, the Magpies will now feel as if their pathway to the takeover has cleared somewhat, with the arbitration proceedings to come next year.

Win that case against the Premier League, and the Toon Army can start dreaming of a takeover once more.

Nuwan Kulasekara has attributed his rise to the elite of international cricket’s one-day bowlers to to his perseverance and hard work over the past year. Only five points separate Kulasekara from Daniel Vettori on the ICC’s official rankings of ODI bowlers, and the Sri Lankan medium-pacer said he was just glad to be able to contribute to the team’s cause.Kulasekara has climbed to No. 2 in the ICC rankings for ODI bowlers after an impressive run of performances since his return to the team in April 2008. In that period, he has taken 45 wickets at an average of 20.97, including five wickets in the last two ODIs of the series against Pakistan, where he wrecked the top order to help his team win both the games by sizeable margins.”In the last 12 months or so I have performed very well taking wickets consistently in one-day cricket. That is the reason why I was able to come up in the rankings,” Kulasekara said. The 26-year-old has improved so much that his captain had the confidence to make him the spearhead of the fast-bowling attack on occasions when veteran Chaminda Vaas was left out of the side. Kulasekara did not fail in the challenges that was thrown at him, and kept on improving.Explaining his success as a new-ball bowler Kulasekara said: “Bowling with the new ball I am able to get my natural inswing going. It is very effective when I pitch it on a good line and length. That’s how I obtain the majority of my wickets.”To add to his swing Kulasekara has also developed a slower ball and learnt to vary his deliveries. He admitted that he had also increased his arm speed which has enabled the ball to skid on to the batsmen at a much quicker pace than what he was bowling at the beginning of his career.Kulasekara worked with Sri Lanka fastbowling coaches Champaka Ramanayake and Anusha Samaranayake and continues to do so with team head coach Trevor Bayliss and his assistant Paul Farbrace. “They have taught me the basics and brought new ideas on how to bowl a slow ball, how to vary balls and study batsmen,” said Kulasekara.”I don’t want to compare myself with anyone. I try to do bowl to my strengths depending on the state of the match. My deliveries vary from batsmen to batsmen. My role in the team is to get early breakthroughs with the new ball. I have been successful so far in doing that. I want to assist the team to win matches and be an important member of it. I hope to be a part of the 2011 World Cup side.”

Man Utd suffer Harry Maguire injury blow

Manchester United have suffered a major injury blow ahead of their Champions League encounter with Villarreal after centre-back Harry Maguire was ruled out of action.

What’s the word?

The Red Devils host their Spanish opponents this evening looking for their first points in Group F, but their task has been made considerably harder due to their captain’s enforced absence.

Maguire had to be substituted in the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa over the weekend after picking up a calf injury, and he joined fellow defender Luke Shaw on the treatment table as the left-back also had to leave the field of play early due to a fitness concern.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provided an update of the pair’s current situation in Tuesday’s press conference, and it appears as though Shaw has recovered quicker.

“Luke has been in today, so I’ll give him a chance to be involved, he didn’t train with the team,” the Norweigian tactician revealed. “Harry is more or less definitely out; it doesn’t look good.

“It is his calf; that might take a few weeks. Let’s see how quickly he recovers. He wanted to play against Villarreal; he missed the last game. We will have to make a few changes.”

Solskjaer will be gutted

News that United will be unable to call upon the services of Maguire for this crucial Champions League clash will certainly leave Solskjaer feeling gutted.

A shock defeat against Young Boys in the opening group game has piled the pressure on the Old Trafford outfit to get a result against Villarreal, and the absence of their captain and first-choice centre-back is a bitter blow to their hopes of getting a positive result.
