'Changed my mentality to play Test cricket' – Imrul

Imrul Kayes said he had to fine-tune his mental make-up more than his batting technique to forge a comeback to the Bangladesh Test team after more than two years

Imrul Kayes said he had to fine-tune his mental make-up more than his batting technique to forge a comeback to the Bangladesh Test team after more than two years. Imrul is one of two openers picked in the 14-man squad for the first Test against Sri Lanka starting in Dhaka on Monday.Imrul was not expecting the call-up to the Test squad and was preparing for the National Cricket League, the season’s second first-class competition, after having played the Bangladesh Cricket League earlier in the year.”Actually I was not even too sure if I would do well in the Bangladesh Cricket League, but I had targeted to play well in the National Cricket League,” Imrul said. “I was very serious in the Dhaka Premier League as I felt that it is a big tournament from our point of view. I was eager to perform there, and I did decently.”Perhaps this is the change in his mentality as he began focusing more on domestic cricket, keen to put in the big scores, instead of paying too much attention on getting back into the senior team.Shamsur Rahman is the likely candidate to make his Test debut at the Shere Bangla National Stadium but, having received the surprise call-up, Imrul is pushing his case too. He has a century and a half-century in his last five innings, enough to keep him excited that he might get the nod to open with Tamim again.”I had made some technical changes but, importantly, I changed my mentality that is required to play Test cricket,” Imrul said. “I had to put in a lot of hard work and that is the reason I could be successful. Obviously it feels nice to be back again but the enjoyment would be bigger if I get a chance in the Test matches.”Like any other person, I was also going through the ups and downs of life. But I had the belief that I can make a comeback if I can play some good innings. And I have done that. I am always ready to grab the chance if I can return to the national team on the back of some good form.”But Imrul’s Test record isn’t too encouraging. He averages 17.15 in 16 Tests since 2008 and lost his place in the Test side after the series against West Indies in 2011. Despite the below-par personal record, Imrul is one half of Bangladesh’s most successful opening pair. But his poor personal form caught up, and the selectors decided to try the likes of Nazimuddin, Junaid Siddique, Jahurul Islam, Shahriar Nafees and Anamul Haque instead.Imrul has batted decently in the first-class competitions over the last two years, and has peaked at the right time, notching an average of more than 74 in the Bangladesh Cricket League this season. He has also scored 655 runs at 43.66 in the Dhaka Premier Division that concluded in December last year.At the same time, Imrul also had to correct the balance in his batting stance and while playing certain shots, and he took the help of a senior coach. Like any other Bangladesh cricketer dropped from the national team, Imrul, too, had to deal with the lack of proper practice facilities at the club and division level. However, it was not enough of a deterrent for a man keen to make the comeback.”I worked with [BCB’s game development manager Nazmul Abedeen] Fahim sir, as I had some problem with my balance. Now, as that is removed, I am batting more comfortably and easily. When you are batting well, you can play any stroke. He told me that if my batting is in the correct order, I can play any stroke. It becomes easier that way.”You usually don’t get facilities that the national team does in other places in the country. Despite that, whenever I got a chance I tried to complete my individual practice at the Mirpur indoor facilities, or the National Cricket Academy.”

Philander hits Australian wall

Vernon Philander began the series ranked as the world’s No. 1 paceman but is increasingly struggling to live up to the expectations of his lofty perch against Australia

If South Africa’s batsmen are being ruled by fear against Mitchell Johnson then Australia’s are showing nothing of the sort against Vernon Philander, who began the series ranked as the world’s No. 1 paceman but is increasingly struggling to live up to the expectations of his lofty perch against Michael Clarke’s team. While Philander’s overall record remains prolific, his career average of 18.75 has been torn up in opposition to Australia over the past three matches. Discounting his first series against the Australians on seaming South African pitches in 2011, he has managed only five victims at 59.20 while also missing the 2012 Adelaide Oval Test with a back injury. His absence from that match has been a source of some derision within the Australia camp, as demonstrated by David Warner before the series when he quipped, “I would have liked to see him bowl at Adelaide in that second Test when he apparently hurt his back – and was bowling in the nets three days later.” The tourists’ notion that Philander is a fair-wicket operator has only grown stronger with time. An indifferent game at Centurion saw him lose top spot on the ICC leaderboard to Dale Steyn. With that in mind, the Australians have sought to absorb Philander’s new-ball spell and then attack him when he returns later in the innings, heaping further pressure on Steyn and Morne Morkel to bowl more frequently and thus sapping them of energy and pace. Emboldened by the treatment Philander received from Clarke and Michael Hussey in Brisbane during the previous series, Australia have presented the South African with the greatest hurdle of his three-year Test career.”He’s probably a bloke that thrives on conditions and obviously the batters made the most of it the other day and backed themselves to play with a bit of confidence,” fellow seamer Peter Siddle said of Philander. “A lot of teams have sat back and let him build the pressure on them, which has got him wickets.”The way the boys attacked him and approached him the other day, getting off strike and swapping left and right-handers, that puts the pressure back on him rather than him building all that pressure. The boys have learnt how to play him. We’re not sitting back and worried about what he’s going to bring. We can put it back on him, build the pressure and keep building that on the team. I think that’s the strength that showed the other day with the big innings first up.”Conditions at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth may yet be more amenable to Philander’s seam-up skills, but that will also assist an Australia pace collective that is riding confidently in the slipstream left by Mitchell Johnson’s ferocious assault on the batsmen of England and South Africa. Siddle said Johnson’s potency allowed himself and Ryan Harris to go smoothly about their work without worrying overly about straining for wickets.”It’s always nice to have someone who’s bowling so well and building so much pressure on the batsman that they get to the other end, their footwork is a bit shaky and we can make the most of that,” he said. “You can build a bit more pressure the way I bowl with a certain plan, rather than trying to blast the batsmen out when I am bowling with him. It probably does change my approach a little bit.”The most important contributions of Siddle and Harris at Centurion were arguably the dismissals of Hashim Amla, after the No. 3 had, with the exception of one snorting short delivery that clattered into his helmet grille, shown an ability to play Johnson somewhat better than his team-mates. Siddle admitted to similarities between his plans for Amla and those for the similarly wristy Kevin Pietersen in Australia during the Ashes.”That’s something we looked at. Even though Amla and Pietersen do look different with their technique, the way to get them out is very similar,” Siddle said. “We set very similar fields to when we were bowling to Pietersen and I tried to approach it the same sort of way.”I have had a bit of success with players who play that type of game, it gives me an opportunity to nip it back in at the stumps and they can also fall to the ball that is going away. Everyone has fun bowling to the best players in the world, that’s what Test cricket is all about. Sometimes it definitely doesn’t come off, but it is nice when it does.”Whatever Amla achieves in the remainder of the series, Siddle observed that the hole left by Jacques Kallis was even bigger than players on either side had accounted for, noting the difference made to Faf du Plessis by his promotion to No. 4. Beaten by a pair of unplayable deliveries, du Plessis was also subjected to plenty of verbal barbs from an Australia team that has not forgotten his Adelaide Oval rearguard in 2012.”I think so. I think it’s a massive loss – a bloke that’s batted at number four for them for such a long period of time. He’s been a key. A bloke averaging over 50 does leave a big hole,” Siddle said. “There’s a couple of young blokes in that line-up they’re obviously looking to stand up. Hopefully we can keep pushing … and building the pressure on those guys.”It’s obviously a great start, to be able to put them under a lot of pressure after that first Test and know there’s going to be a lot of pressure for them to stand up in this next Test. We’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing. I think our planning has been great and our execution with bat and ball in the past six months has been tremendous. We’ve just got to try and keep doing that.”

Neste ano, Fonseca dirigiu o Novorizontino no Paulistão, e levou o Tigre à segunda fase do torneio.

Suspend IPL pending clean-up – former BCCI chief

Shashank Manohar, the former BCCI president, has called for the IPL to be suspended “until the faith of the people in the integrity of the game is restored”

Shashank Manohar: ‘All IPL matches should be investigated’•AFP

Shashank Manohar, the former BCCI president, has called for the IPL to be suspended “until the faith of the people in the integrity of the game is restored”. Manohar – who was succeeded as president by N Srinivasan – has also called for all IPL matches to be investigated, and voiced his concern over the decision to stage part of the 2014 IPL in the UAE, which, he says, “will further tarnish the already murky waters surrounding the tournament”.”The Supreme Courts observation is that there are very, very serious allegations made in the report and unless the BCCI president steps down, no fair probe can be conducted,” Manohar said in a statement. “I had said long back, when the scandal broke, that all IPL matches should be investigated. I feel that a thorough probe needs to be done by CBI as the canvas of the activities extends throughout the country.”In view of the serious allegations, regarding betting, spot-fixing and match-fixing, the public at large has lost it’s faith in IPL games.”Considering the latest developments in the BCCI, it is my considered opinion that until the faith of the people in the integrity of the game is restored, the IPL tournament for the year 2014 should be suspended. As regards suspending IPL 2014, the board members should remind themselves that money/profits is neither the aim nor the objective of the board. The primary duty is to promote a clean game of cricket.”Many years back, a conscious decision was taken by the BCCI to abstain from matches in the Middle East in view of certain information regarding rampant betting and match-fixing. As far as I know, that decision has not been revoked. Due to the upcoming Lok Sabha [India’s lower house of Parliament] elections, the decision to shift IPL matches to the Middle East will further tarnish the already murky waters surrounding the tournament. I had already said earlier that all IPL matches should first be investigated and only then can all the erring parties be punished and the clean-up initiated. What has been lately revealed could well be the tip of the iceberg.”Cricket is the most popular game in India and enjoys a dedicated viewership of millions. This viewership is what generates income and fuels BCCI’s clout on an international level. If the faith of the public is not restored, the BCCI would be failing the public which has catapulted it to being the most influential player on the international scene.”Manohar’s statements came a day after the Supreme Court of India recommended that Srinivasan quit his role as BCCI president, as the first move towards a fair investigation of the IPL corruption saga. The court had given Srinivasan two days to make his decision, before it resumes hearing the case on Thursday.IS Bindra, another former BCCI president, also came out strongly against Srinivasan. “It is a moment of shame for us to see the game gaining such disrepute across the globe for a single man’s obsession with power,” Bindra wrote on his personal website. He expressed displeasure at the BCCI’s “top brass” remaining silent on the scathing observations made by the two-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Tuesday. “What surprises me even more is the fact that there has been no murmur from the top brass in the BCCI,” Bindra said. “Yes, there have been statements from the BCCI vice-presidents but they are too open-ended.”Like Manohar, Bindra, too, questioned the scheduling of IPL matches in Sharjah, a venue he described as “the hotbed of fixing” and the “epicenter of nefarious activities” in cricket. He also agreed with Manohar’s suggestion that the this season of the IPL need be cancelled. “With so many doubts and questions around the tournament’s integrity, the players and officials’ integrity, it is better to not have the tournament this year,” Bindra said.Sharad Pawar, another former BCCI president, echoed the others’ views. “The prevailing standoff has tarnished the image of Indian cricket,” he said. “The BCCI’s image was clean during mine and Shashank’s regime. Even at the international arena, Indian cricket was well respected.”Niranjan Shah, a former BCCI secretary, said that it was for the administrators to put the game ahead of selfish interests. “This is the time for all the board members to get united for the sake of Indian cricket. It is time to try and save the face of the BCCI before more damage is done,” Shah told ESPNcricinfo.Another former secretary, who wished to remain anonymous, said regardless of the decision Srinivasan takes, it was important to ensure that the game remained clean. “It is again an opportunity for the BCCI to clean everything,” he said. “Everybody knows the wrong things that have happened. They should ensure that nothing like this is repeated. A lot of fans, who are genuine cricket lovers, are suffering. It is the duty of the BCCI to see that steps are taken to ensure wrong things are not repeated.”Srinivasan is believed to be exploring his legal options before the court reconvenes on Thursday.

Lancashire struggle in Moores' farewell

Much of the attention was on Peter Moores at Old Trafford, in his final match before rejoining England, but his county were left on the back foot by some impressive Warwickshire seam bowling

“The coach is leaving!” These words, voiced in either expectation or panic, will be spoken in many pubs and clubs during the Easter weekend. This morning, though, they carried a very different meaning for Lancashire supporters, one far removed from excursions to Morecambe or the Bank Holiday trip to watch Bury at York. However, while the news that Peter Moores had been reappointed as England coach may have disappointed the warmly-clad diehards as they made their way to Old Trafford for the first match of the season, it can scarcely have come as too much of a surprise; the 51-year-old had been strongly tipped to regain one of the top jobs. For their part, Lancashire officials were at pains to stress that they will not be rushed as they ponder their options in the wake of Moores’s departure at the end of this game against Warwickshire.”It’s all pretty new,” said director of cricket Mike Watkinson. “We’re only 24 hours into this, so we need to take time and look at our best way forward. The feeling among the lads is outstanding and we need to ensure that we don’t upset their equilibrium as we move through the season.”We got this confirmed only 24 hours ago, so it’s not a case of we’re definitely going to do this or that. Glen Chapple’s doing an excellent job as captain and we need to make sure that he’s fully supported in every way and the players are fully resourced to help them achieve their aims and objectives. That won’t change because Peter’s moving on.”We had Peter contracted until the end of 2015, so if you’re following a natural succession plan we didn’t expect that to change on Easter Saturday 2014 when we had a game starting on the Sunday. It’s just a bit early at the moment and Peter will be part of the conversation we’re having during this game to make sure that there is continuity in the structures he’s put in place. We have a good staff and plenty of experience here as it stands and it’s not as if we have to panic.”Well perhaps not, but Moores and Watkinson cannot have been too happy with the profligate manner in which Lancashire batsmen surrendered a good position on the first day of his game. Having won the toss on what looks a good wicket, the home side were decently placed on 168 for 3 in the 56th over when Luke Procter, who had played with fluency and confidence, flicked Oliver Hannon-Dalby to Ateeq Javid at square leg and departed for 37.That dismissal, which occurred just after an out of shape ball had been changed, began a collapse either side of tea which saw seven wickets fall for 79 runs in 19.1 overs. Lancashire were eventually bowled out over an hour before the close for 247, three runs short of a second batting bonus point and perhaps 75 shy of a par score on this wicket.By the close, visiting openers Varun Chopra and William Porterfield had added 63 runs in fairly untroubled fashion and firmly given the lie to any suspicion that this pitch conceals hidden demons. This was indisputably Warwickshire’s day.But the dominance of Ian Bell’s side cannot be explained merely by reference to Lancashire’s shortcomings. In cold, blustery conditions which were hardly ideal for either bowlers or fielders, Chris Woakes stuck to his task to finish with 5 for 63 from 16 overs, and Keith Barker offered fine support in taking 3 for 52.True, the shot selection of some of the Lancashire batsmen helped the seamers: Andrea Agathangelou, for example, made 48 off 62 balls before perishing when playing an expansive drive on the stroke of lunch. But others were got out in admirable fashion: Ashwell Prince was caught behind for a second ball duck when Woakes compelled a shot at the beginning of the afternoon session. The best innings was played by Paul Horton, whose 253-minute 83 was a monument to his patience and craftsmanship; but far too few Lancashire batsmen were truly got out by for the comfort of home supporters. All of which may prompt Lancashire supporters to urge their officials to appoint a new coach as soon as reasonably possible after Moores relinquishes his duties at the end of this game. There is, of course, no shortage of qualified candidates on the current staff at Old Trafford.Academy director John Stanworth and second team coach Gary Yates are just two of them, and already many Red Rose supporters are pressing the claims of the current skipper Chapple. Watkinson acknowledged Chapple’s expertise as a Level 4 coach, but having quickly ruled himself out of contention – “I’m only wearing a tracksuit because it’s cold,” he quipped – the he counselled caution and careful thought before any decision is made.”Glen is a very experienced captain and he’s developing his coaching role, too,” he said. “It’s his dressing room but he is also our go-to cricketer and he would find it tough to spend hours in the nets as well. His leadership role will not be diluted and it may well be strengthened, certainly in the short term. He’ll play a major part in selecting the team as he has now, and he has a hunger to play but he also has a great passion for the next chapter of his life.”We appointed someone Paul Downton described yesterday as the best coach of his generation and he’s done a great job for us in the last five years. We need to make sure we don’t lose momentum. What that looks like in the months and years ahead we’ve yet to determine. We need to make sure that everything remains on an even keel during the run of matches we have coming up.”If we wanted to do a thorough, robust recruitment process now, it would take months. Getting through to the end of the season and maintaining our aims and objectives as they are now is our priority. I spoke to the players this morning and I told them that we will do everything we can to make sure they have the resources they need. There will be a coach with the team at Northampton next week.”
