Less-significant South Africa tour still vital yardstick for India

This curtailed tour might not be the bumper series India’s fans and team had been building up towards, but it is one that still holds a lot of cricketing significance for them

Where will India’s young batsmen and bowlers stand at the end of the whistle-stop South Africa tour?•Associated Press

This was supposed to be India’s big tour. It was two years of home cricket in the making. India had even sent an A team here earlier in the year to become more familiar with the conditions. And it was a proper A team: except for Virat Kohli, all the Test batsmen in this side made the trip. Coach Duncan Fletcher himself dropped in. For a change, the cricketing wing of Team India was looking ahead, or possibly the change was that it was being paid heed to.It was a proper tour: three Tests, seven ODIs, two Twenty20s. Enough time to travel all over this beautiful country. Enough time to lose form, enough to regain it. Enough time for ups and downs and all the experiences a cricket tour brings. Enough time for rhythms to build. Except that the real world sometimes doesn’t agree with proper cricket. And so we have a tour not many are excited about. Three years ago “we are waiting” billboards welcomed India everywhere they went. This time around the local press seems to suggest only aggressive crowds are waiting to let their displeasure be known. The statistics being dug out are of the last time a team other than Zimbabwe, Bangladesh or the Associates came to South Africa for a tour of decent length but didn’t go to Cape Town at all. Incidentally, it happened back in November 2002 when Sri Lanka didn’t play any of their five ODIs and two Tests in the Mother City. Once the disappointment of a wasted tour subsides, though, you will realise it is still a significant trip for India. There is a “last” that happened with India much before the last time a visiting team didn’t go to Cape Town. The last time India went through such complete overhaul of batting, going to a proper – in terms of strength of opposition, not duration – tour with such a raw batting line-up, full of virtual debutants, was when Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, and later VVS Laxman, started to join Sachin Tendulkar in the middle order. All four properly came together incidentally on a tour of South Africa. In a way Tendulkar has not done India many favours by playing all the home Tests and then retiring before this tour. Those were matches a youngster could have used to gain experience before a year full of overseas assignments.Like the mutated tour, though, you have no choice but to be philosophical about this now. These batsmen still have it better than their predecessors. That the ODIs are before the Tests salvages the situation a bit for India. As MS Dhoni said before leaving for South Africa, the nature of that format and that it demands a more free-flowing game will help the young batting line-up get rid of early nerves before the two-Test series begins. In a way, the same can be said in the larger scheme of these batsmen’s careers too. When Dravid and Ganguly made their Test debut, in England, they had played five and two ODIs, and had barely seen the world outside India. Laxman was on a tour of South Africa before he had played an ODI. Only Virender Sehwag among that older group had with him a body of work in international cricket – 22 ODIs – before he became a Test cricketer.Almost all of the batsmen on this trip have had experience of being in international cricket before this tour. Rohit Sharma set the record for most ODIs before Test debut, Shikhar Dhawan faces Dale Steyn in the IPL nets, and Kohli has established himself as one of the best chasers in ODIs and captains the likes of AB de Villiers. Even though this batting line-up has a collective experience of three Tests in South Africa, they have the exposure, they are more worldly wise, more confident than Dravid, Ganguly and Laxman were when they were sent to face Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock, a young and quick Lance Klusener, and Brian McMillan. The test now is of their skill, of their temperament, of how they adjust to the conditions, how they make the adjustment from facing Sammy and his friendly friends in Kanpur to Steyn and Co on pitches with bounce and seam. It’s not all about the batsmen, though. India’s famous overseas Test wins have of late been set up by their bowlers. They have also tended to escape a lot of flak because it has always been the great Indian batting line-up that has been expected to carry them through everywhere. This time around, under the mentorship of the returning Zaheer Khan, they will possibly be asked the same number of questions as the batsmen.Apart from Zaheer, only Ishant Sharma has played a Test in South Africa, and he doesn’t look like he will add to that tally. The bowlers, too, will rely on the ODIs to get used to the outfields on which they will run in, to condition themselves to bowl long spells, to find the lengths that will give them assistance. Like the batsmen, they might benefit from lower expectations. It is an unusual tour for India. One that promises to actually test how good India’s transition from the desperation of 2012 has been, but one that comes with lower expectations than those two away tours in which they were whitewashed. The ODI series, given South Africa’s recent form, is open – although South Africa might still fancy a few psychological blows on extra spicy pitches – but in the Tests you’d venture India will take anything better than a 2-0 defeat to a fully fit South African side, provided it doesn’t come through weather interruptions.

Weather worry on Nelson's big day

Saxton Oval will make it’s debut as an ODI venue on Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd, if the rain stays away

The Preview by Siddarth Ravindran03-Jan-2014Match factsSaturday, January 4, 2014

Big PictureOne-day bilateral series aren’t something that stick in the mind of cricket fans, but Corey Anderson put this series on the front pages with a record-breaking century that it will be remembered by. Cricket fans in Nelson also won’t forget this series, as they gear up for the first one-day international in the city, with all 5300 tickets sold out. The match will also give the World Cup organisers to gauge Saxton Oval’s readiness for the global event, in which Nelson will host three matches. The main worry ahead of the game though is whether the rains will stay away. Persistent showers meant the teams couldn’t practise at the ground on Friday, with West Indies instead training at a boxing gym which had a two-lane, indoor cricket net attached. “We’re just praying for a fine day,” Nelson cricket chief David Leonard told . “I’m not unhappy to see it rain today actually, because it’s fairly rare in Nelson that we might get two days of rain in a row.”The series is level at one-all with two games to play, but New Zealand should think of themselves as favourites, given the slew of major players missing from the West Indies side. Injuries meant Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard never made the trip, Marlon Samuels joined that list soon after the Tests, Darren Bravo flew home due to personal reasons, and on New Years’ Day Darren Sammy strained his hamstring to miss the rest of the tour.Add to that, the damage caused by Anderson and Jesse Ryder’s savage centuries in Queenstown, and the chilly weather which is a far cry from a Caribbean summer. West Indies have an enormous challenge ahead.Form guideNew Zealand WLLWL(last five completed matches)
West Indies LWLWL
In the spotlightCorey Anderson will be associated with the number 36 for a long time, after his brutal hitting made him a name to watch among cricket fans around the world. The challenge now for Anderson is to make his name as a reliable allrounder, and not as a one-hit wonder.Ravi Rampaul had a nightmare New Years’ Day, thumped for 64 runs in three overs – the worst economy rate in an ODI for any bowler who has bowled more than one over. In a team sorely lacking experience, and badly needing a lift, Rampaul will need to step up his game.Team newsTim Southee rejoined the squad earlier this week after recovering from a toe injury. The rain on Friday meant he couldn’t bowl to test whether he is fully fit to play on Saturday, though Southee was confident he was good to go. “Toe is coming along alright,” he said. “Bowled a few in Queenstown and there was no pain, which is a good sign. Where they made the cut, it is still a bit raw, so a bit of blood after bowling, so let it heal and stop splitting. Would have been nice to have a bowl today.”New Zealand will also have to take a call on whether to include Kane Williamson in the XI, or to leave him out for the second game in a row.New Zealand (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Jesse Ryder, 3 Ross Taylor, 4 Brendon McCullum (capt), 5 Corey Anderson, 6 Luke Ronchi, (wk), 7 James Neesham, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Tim Southee/Adam Milne, 10 Mitchell McClenaghan, 11 Kyle MillsThe injuries keep coming for West Indies, with Sammy the latest to be ruled out. One option for West Indies is to bring in Kirk Edwards for Chadwick Walton to bolster their top order. In any case, they will be left with a rather lengthy tail.West Indies (probable) 1 Johnson Charles, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Kirk Edwards, 4 Lendl Simmons, 5 Dwayne Bravo (capt), 6 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 7 Narsingh Deonarine, 8 Ravi Rampaul, 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Jason Holder 11 Nikita MillerStats and trivia Saxton Oval will become the 13th New Zealand venue to host an ODI Adam Milne has big numbers in his six ODIs so far: the batting strike-rate is 400 (just one innings), but the bowling strike-rate is a woeful 176 and bowling average is 172 as he has taken only one wicket Mitchell McClenaghan has 42 wickets in 16 ODIs. The record for quickest to 50 wickets is held by Ajantha Mendis (19 matches), and the fastest New Zealand bowler is Shane Bond (27) Quotes”It was a great knock from Anderson but we’ve been analyzing footage and studying the size of the ground. It’s going to be a different ball game. We will not be making the same mistakes twice.”

“I think they’ll (West Indies) learn from it (Queenstown defeat) – there’s no point in hanging on to it and dwelling on it, so they’ll move on. It’s another game tomorrow, a fresh start at a different ground, with different conditions.”

Sri Lanka ahead despite Shehzad ton

Ahmed Shehzad scored his maiden Test hundred but Pakistan’s progress on the third day was not swift enough to weaken Sri Lanka’s grip on their 1-0 lead in the series

The Report by George Binoy18-Jan-20140:00

Fernando: Sri Lanka can still win the match

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAhmed Shehzad scored his maiden Test hundred but Pakistan’s progress on the third day in Sharjah, despite a century opening partnership and 122 runs in the final session, was not swift enough to weaken Sri Lanka’s grip on their 1-0 lead in the series. At their current pace the best Pakistan can hope for is to draw a Test they need to win, but with their middle order falling away alarmingly, they were far from certain of avoiding a first-innings deficit.Pakistan’s approach was curious. The surface, despite its crumbling appearance, had little seam, swing or spin for the bowlers but the batsmen did not attempt to force the pace for most of the day. Pakistan lost no wickets in the first session but their openers added only 66 runs in 29 overs. They then lost two in the second while scoring only 84 in 29 overs. Shehzad led the acceleration after tea, forcing Angelo Mathews on the defensive, but he was one of four wickets to fall in the session, which meant it was Sri Lanka who won the day.The go-slow had begun after Pakistan got to 30 for 0 after nine overs; they scored only 12 runs off the next 13. The lack of pace off the pitch and the slow outfield hindered shot making and most of the early boundaries came via glances from Shehzad when the fast bowlers strayed on to the pads.Ahmed Shehzad was defensive for most of the first two sessions, but accelerated after his maiden Test hundred•AFP

To try and make something happen for Sri Lanka, Shaminda Eranga bowled cross seam to rough up one side of the ball, and a few deliveries did tail in to the right-hand batsmen through the day. Herath operated from over the wicket, pitching outside leg stump, a line of attack he used for most of the day. Towards the end of the first session, Mathews placed six fielders on the leg side and Suranga Lakmal bowled very straight, making the batsmen play, often across the line.Manzoor and Shehzad picked up the pace shortly before lunch but slowed down again after the break, when they played four maidens in the first five overs. Mathews brought himself on and conceded his first run only off the last delivery of his fourth over.Things began to happen in the 42nd over, with Manzoor and Shehzad sweeping Herath for a three and a four, and Shehzad being dropped on 43 by Dimuth Karunaratne at midwicket. That over of excitement, however, was not a sign of things to come. Pakistan’s century opening stand came up in 43.3 overs, and Shehzad got to his fifty off 150 balls, and Manzoor reached his off 120.Eranga’s reintroduction 12 overs into the second session brought Sri Lanka the breakthrough. He began to reverse-swing deliveries into the right-hander and Manzoor edged one that strayed down leg side to the keeper. He reviewed the umpire’s decision in vain and the opening stand ended on 114.Pakistan have made some horrible reviews in this series but none was worse than Azhar Ali’s decision to challenge his edge to slip. It merely delayed the confirmation of Dilruwan Perera’s maiden Test wicket, after the offspinner had to wait 42 overs on the second day to get a bowl.Eranga and Lakmal then began to reverse the ball significantly – they had a 7-2 leg side field at times – but the movement was appreciable only in the air. The balls that hit the pitch were not as potent.Shehzad brought up his century shortly after tea – his second 50 had taken only 80 balls – and accelerated after the landmark. He square drove Perera for four, drove Eranga on the up through cover, lofted the fast bowler over long-on for six, and carted the offspinner over his head to the straight boundary. During Shehzad’s acceleration, however, Younis Khan, who had been rotating strike busily, was caught superbly down the leg side by Prasanna Jayawardene off Herath. He walked, leaving Pakistan 189 for 3.In the company of Misbah-ul-Haq, Shehzad continued to raise his strike-rate, sweeping Herath and slog-sweeping Perera. The 50-run stand for the fourth wicket took 63 balls. Misbah’s contribution was 11. And then Shehzad chose wrong, attempting to reverse-sweep a Herath delivery from a few feet outside leg stump. He was so shocked that the ball had gone on to bowl him off the bottom edge that he took ages to leave the pitch. Shehzad’s last 47 runs had come off only 45 balls. There was more pain for Pakistan, though. Having been denied numerous marginal decisions while bowling, Pakistan lost Asad Shafiq to an lbw appeal that umpire Richard Kettleborough upheld, but replays indicated the ball from Eranga would have only clipped leg stump. Shafiq reviewed and lost out to the umpire’s call, which is fast becoming Pakistan’s bane in this series. And in the final over of the day, Herath got one to spin and bounce away from Sarfraz Ahmed, and Prasanna moved swiftly to his right to catch the thick edge. Misbah, unbeaten on 36 at the other end, was left with only the tail.
