Richie Benaud will not be disappearing from Channel Nine’s cricket coverage after the network forked out a colossal sum to retain television rights for Australia’s home international matches, but Channel Ten has promised fresh new faces to front its Big Bash League broadcasts. The two free-to-air stations will have a share of the cricket schedule this summer after a deal was finalised on Monday to provide a monstrously large boost to Cricket Australia’s broadcasting revenue for the next five years.James Sutherland, the CA chief executive, said the deals were worth a total of A$590 million over five years, an increase of 118% on the previous agreement, which he not surprisingly declared “an outstanding result” for Australian cricket. CA has also agreed to work with Channel Nine on a $60 million digital rights joint venture, for mobile and broadband coverage of international cricket, and the network’s CEO David Gyngell said that was an especially exciting aspect of the deal.However, while Gyngell said there was never any doubt that Nine would retain the rights it has held for more than 30 years, having to pay such a hefty price was “an ouch moment”. The network was forced into outlaying more than it intended due to Channel Ten’s bold bid to poach all of the cricket rights. Gyngell said that ultimately he was comfortable with the decision, which will also eliminate the traditional coverage “blackouts” in the host city.”As long as the management team we have got is at Channel Nine we won’t be losing cricket,” Gyngell said. “It is Australia’s national game. It is wallpaper over summer. It is a much bigger sport than the ratings always say it is because people are at holiday places, campsites, all sorts of things. The exciting thing for us is we’re partnering with Cricket Australia on the digital rights. Digital rights is going to be television everywhere. That’s where the world is going.”Cricket is in our DNA and we’re very proud of it. A lot of people would say we over-invest in it from a broadcasting point of view but it has defined our network … It is wallpaper. You walk in off the beach, off the farm, wherever you are in the summer and you go ‘what’s the score, who’s doing what?’ That is a very deep thing for us. We were never going to not do that.”Part of that “wallpaper” over summer has been the ongoing presence of Benaud, Bill Lawry, Ian Chappell and until his death late last year, Tony Greig, in the Channel Nine commentary box. Gyngell said the network and its commentary team would continue to evolve, but he did not envisage any major changes as a result of the new deal.”I can’t imagine cricket without Richie,” Gyngell said. “Richie will do cricket for as long as he wants to do cricket. We’ll never be telling Richie what he can and can’t do. I’m always honoured to be in his presence as a person and I’m always interested in hearing what he has to say. Bill is in the same space. We’ve got a dozen commentators and they’re all a range of ages and they’ve come through in different periods.”While Test, one-day and Twenty20 international cricket will not be changing stations, the BBL will for the first time be broadcast on free-to-air television instead of Fox Sports on pay TV. Hamish McLennan, the CEO of Channel Ten, said the network was thrilled to be entering the cricket market and to be showing every BBL match live, even though it had missed out on securing the international rights.”We always thought from the beginning that David and Channel Nine had the last right of refusal and they were most likely to exercise that,” McLennan said. “We put a very healthy bid on the table. We saw a great opportunity around the Big Bash and we’re really delighted that we’ve got a format we can do something with and that will grow.”We see that there are some opportunities to bring some fresh, new faces onto the Ten broadcast, but it’s too early to announce what we’re going to do. But we are looking at a range of candidates and we’ll be announcing that in the next months. I’d say the vast majority will be from a cricket background.”Ten will also broadcast the Women’s National Cricket League T20 final as part of a double-header with the BBL finals but it appears to have little interest in the Ryobi Cup or the Sheffield Shield. However, Sutherland said Cricket Australia was still exploring options regarding the Ryobi Cup, which has previously been broadcast on Fox Sports, and one possibility was squeezing the entire tournament into a short period at the start of the season.”We’re certainly considering various possibilities with Ryobi and that may or may not be directly related to broadcasting opportunities,” Sutherland said. “There’s also team performance aspects of it that are an important consideration. There’s no doubt we’ve done a little bit of work on considering a window in October for the Ryobi Cup to launch the season if you like and I think that has been reasonably well received. There’s always pros and cons with this sort of thing but we see it as a good opportunity to get into Shield cricket through the middle part of the summer.”

Trent Johnston, who has been in the vanguard of Ireland’s recent renaissance, has announced he will retire from international cricket at the end of the year. The 39-year-old will play in the World T20 qualifiers in UAE in November, and finish his Ireland career in the ICC Intercontinental Cup final in Dubai in early December.”It’s been a difficult decision and I’ve racked my brains ever since I came back from the UAE tour in March”, Johnston said. “It’s becoming harder to recover after matches now, so much so that I can hardly walk for a couple of days.”He explained that after that two-week tour he could only put on and take off his socks with the help of his children, Charlie (10) and Claudia (13). “I knew then my time was limited and although it would have been great to play in another World Cup in Australia, it was just beyond me. It’s time to move on to new things and give Phil Simmons a chance to find somebody to replace me.”Johnston’s announcement comes just after Ireland qualified for the 2015 World Cup and the final of the Intercontinental Cup. “I’d set myself personal goals at the start of the year and I’ve been slowly ticking those boxes as we go along. I always knew we were going to qualify for the 2015 World Cup with the squad we have, and the standard we’ve been playing at for a few years now. I’ve achieved a lot in my career and I’m pretty happy with how it’s all went.”A native of Wollongong, New South Wales, Johnston played several first-class games for that state before he was released in 2000. During the 1990s he had played as a club professional in Dublin, where he met his Irish wife Vanessa, so was intrigued by an approach by a former team-mate, Jason Molins, who was by then Ireland captain. Molins had worked out that by virtue of his marriage Johnston was now entitled to an Irish passport – and a place in the team currently taking shape under Adrian Birrell (who was last week appointed assistant coach to South Africa).He packed his bags and made his Ireland debut one week after his 30th birthday – and went on to play 186 games for his adopted country, including 65 ODIs, 28 T20Is and 27 first-class games. You’re involved in selection, media work, and organising training sessions and game plans so it has brought a new dimension which is really interesting.”Towards the end of my Ireland career Simmo gave me extra responsibility in preparing the bowling department and working with the guys there, which was good experience, and I also went to the Women’s World Cup qualifier in 2011 as Jeremy Bray’s assistant.”Cricket Ireland isn’t in a position to hire Johnston, but hopes ICC funding down the line might provide an opportunity. “Warren Deutrom has been honest with me, but I don’t really know if I can stay in Ireland to progress my coaching career,” Johnston said. “It would be great to pick up a job as an assistant or bowling coach and continue to learn the trade. But I know to do that I’d have to travel, which would present challenges. That’s something we’ll deal with if it arises. Hopefully there will be offers and it’s my main priority now to get something nailed down for after December.”Current Ireland captain William Porterfield said: “It’s pretty hard to sum up the impact that TJ has had on Irish cricket and what he has achieved. He has brought so much to the squad both on and off the field, leading by example not only with the new ball, but in showing what it means to pull on the Irish jersey by his work ethic off the pitch. Desh Prem Azad, the former coach of Kapil Dev and other Test cricketers, died in Mohali on Friday aged 75 after a brief illness. Reports say he had been in hospital for the past 15 days.Azad represented Haryana, the Maharaja of Patiala’s XI and Southern Punjab, playing 19 first-class matches in which he scored 658 runs and took eight wickets. He also served as match referee in two Under-19 matches between India and Australia in 2005.However, it was as coach that he was best known, and for which he received the Dronacharya award – the highest national honour for a coach. Kapil was only the most famous of his students; the other Test cricketers coached included Chetan Sharma, Yograj Singh and Ashok Malhotra.Kapil’s legend – at least the early years – were closely tied to those of his coach and on Friday evening he shared his thoughts. “If I achieved anything, a lot of credit goes to him,” Kapil told ESPNcricinfo. “He coached me from the beginning of my career . I remember the first day I went to the stadium and I only learnt from him. He was more of a friend to me later on, he was not just a coach.”Sharma, a former fast bowler, was coached throughout his career by Azad from a very young age. “I was seven years old when I first went to him, so I played my entire cricket under him,” Sharma said. “I became the player I was because of the discipline he taught us. He used to take me on his scooter to play cricket in many schools. I first played for India at the age of 17 and it was all because of his efforts.”He was a very disciplined and hard-working man. His timings were very strict and if we were even five minutes late for practice, he would punish us by not letting us practice for five days. If he asked us to report at 5am, he was there before us and he was always the last person to leave the stadium. You don’t get to see coaches like him these days.”Sharma also said that apart from coaching him on the field, Azad played a major role in making him mentally tough, especially in pressure situations.”Once, when I was 13-14 years old, I was practising when some local cricketers said that I was chucking. But he was very supportive and he went against everybody saying, ‘How can you say that’. He called me separately and said, ‘They don’t know much about cricket’. He was my saviour and I owe him everything.”The only time he sympathised with me was when Javed Miandad hit me for six on the last ball of the match in Sharjah. He kept me away from everybody in the stadium. There was a tour of England immediately after that and he made me practice separately. He did all this to make sure that nobody would remind me of that incident and I would not get depressed before the tour. He was over-protective and he knew when to be over-protective and when to be strict.”He travelled with me to England to support me. He sat in the stands throughout, he didn’t let my confidence go down and even advised me to open the bowling after that.”Sharma went on to praise Azad for grooming two international fast bowlers and making four players represent India in Tests. “How to coach a kid and then make him play for India at the age of 17, very few coaches have managed to do that. That too, making two back-to-back fast bowlers play for India – Kapil Dev and me, it’s not easy.”Yuvraj Singh also tweeted about Azad’s demise: “Really sad to know about the death of DP Azad sir, coach of so many great cricketers from northern India. RIP Azad sir.”

وشدد الشحات على أن الأهلي يصنع التاريخ لأي لاعب، وقال: «يكفي أنني خلال أربع سنوات توجت بدوري أبطال إفريقيا ثلاث مرات، هذا إلى جانب المشاركة مع الفريق في كأس العالم للأندية ثلاث مرات، فضلًا عن العديد من البطولات الأخرى التي حققتها مع النادي والتي تزين مشواري الكروي».

وأوضح لاعب الأهلي أن أسرته بأكملها كانت رغبتها وقرارها يتفق مع رغبته في بقائه داخل النادي، وأن والدته طالبته بعدم النظر إلى «الفلوس» في المقام الأول، وأن يستمر في الأهلي حتى وإن كان العرض المالي أقل، خاصة أن الأمور المادية لم يضعها في اعتباره عندما فكر في العودة إلى مصر واللعب للأهلي، حيث كانت رغبته الأولى والأخيرة هي ارتداء قميص النادي، باعتباره هدفًا وحلمًا كبيرًا طالما راوده كثيرًا، ثم يأتي من بعده الحديث عن أي أمور أخرى.

وأشار إلى أن أبناءه وزوجته كان لهم دور أيضًا في قرار التجديد، هذا إلى جانب الجهود التي بذلها شقيقه في إنهاء كافة الأمور.

وتطرق الشحات إلى الرد على ما أثير عن فرضه شروطًا مقابل التجديد، قائلًا: “«مفيش حد يتشرط على الأهلي». ولم أفرض شروطًا كما أشاع البعض، فمع النادي الأهلي لا يوجد ما يسمى شروط، وعندما طالبني الأهلي بالبقاء لم أتردد لحظة، وإذا طالبني النادي يومًا بالرحيل سوف أمتثل للقرار، وكما تحدثت من قبل فإن الشائعات دائمًا ما تفرض نفسها على لاعب الكرة، وعليه أن يعتاد على هذا الأمر”.

وأكد لاعب الأهلي أن تألقه مع الفريق يعود إلى منظومة العمل بالكامل بداية من اللاعبين والجهاز الفني والاجتهاد في التدريبات، مشددًا على أن لعبة كرة القدم بشكل عام لعبة جماعية وأن جهود زملائه هي التي تساعده في الظهور بالصورة الجيدة داخل الملعب.

واسترجع الشحات لحظات الفوز بدوري الأبطال للمرة الـ11 في تاريخ النادي، قائلًا: «تعاهدنا على التتويج بلقب دوري أبطال إفريقيا بعد خسارة اللقب العام الماضي في المغرب أمام الوداد، وخلال النسخة الأخيرة واجهنا بعض التحديات الصعبة، ولكن في النهاية توجنا باللقب وعلى حساب فريق الوداد وهو أمر أسعدنا بكل تأكيد، وكما ظهر الحزن على وجوهنا من قبل احتفلنا في المغرب».

وأوضح لاعب الأهلي أنه احتفل مع لاعبي الفريق عقب مباراة الوداد فقط بسبب انضمامه إلى صفوف المنتخب الوطني، وأن الاحتفالات بشكل عام داخل الأهلي تكون في أول يوم فقط بعد الفوز بأي لقب، ومن اليوم التالي يغلق الفريق تلك الصفحة ويكون التركيز منصبًّا على بطولة جديدة، والسعي إلى إضافة لقب آخر للنادي.

كما أشار إلى أن الاحتفال مع المنتخب كان بمناسبة عيد ميلاد محمد صلاح، وأن طاهر محمد طاهر وعمرو السولية وياسر إبراهيم أكثر اللاعبين سماعًا لأغنية «سطلانة» والتي أصبح مجرد ترديدها يعني الاحتفال، لأن الأهلي احتفل معها بالتتويج بدوري الأبطال.

واعتبر الشحات أن اللقب التاسع في دوري أبطال إفريقيا هو الأصعب وأنه لقب غالٍ على اللاعبين، لا سيما أن الأهلي واجه في النهائي فريق الزمالك المنافس التقليدي، ودائمًا ما تكون المواجهات بين الفريقين «ديربي» وصعبة على الفريقين.

وتحدث الشحات عن تحديات المرحلة المقبلة قائلًا: “«عازمون على التتويج بلقب الدوري هذا الموسم بعد غيابه موسمين عن النادي. وأرغب في الوصول إلى ميدالية جديدة في كأس العالم للأندية مع الأهلي»، وأرجع لاعب الأهلي ثبات مستوى الفريق إلى الجدية والتركيز في التدريبات وتجديد دوافع اللاعبين بصورة مستمرة والجهود التي يبذلها الجهاز الفني”.

واسترجع الشحات حديثًا سابقًا دار بينه وبين فلورنتينو بيريز رئيس نادي ريال مدريد خلال مشاركة الأهلي في كأس العالم للأندية، وعقب المباراة التي جمعت بين الأهلي والريال قائلًا: «رئيس ريال مدريد تحدث معي وأكد لي أن الأهلي فريق كبير وأننا قدمنا مباريات كبيرة وتمنى لنا التوفيق».

ووجه حسين الشحات العديد من رسائل الشكر في نهاية حديثه، بدأها بمجلس إدارة النادي برئاسة الكابتن محمود الخطيب، والجهاز الفني وجميع منظومة الكرة بالنادي على دعمها ومساندتها له. كما وجه الشكر إلى جماهير الأهلي والتي أكد أنه لا يستطيع أن يفي بحقها لمساندتها للفريق بشكل عام وتدعيمها له بشكل شخصي في الفترة الماضية.

ووجه رسالة شكر إلى زملائه اللاعبين، مؤكدًا أنهم بمثابة أخوة لا زملاء داخل الفريق، وأنه سعيد بالبقاء معهم لمدة ثلاث سنوات مقبلة.

كشف جوسيب ماريا مينجويلا، وكيل اللاعب جوليان ألفاريز الأرجنتيني، أنه عرض على برشلونة فرصة التعاقد مع هداف كأس العالم 2022 قبل انتقاله إلى مانشستر سيتي.

في يناير 2022، كان برشلونة أمامه خيار للتعاقد مع اللاعب الأرجنتيني الدولي، قبل أن ينضم إلى مانشستر سيتي، ورفض النادي الكتالوني الصفقة.

وفي تصريحات لـ جوسيب ماريا مينجويلا، وكيل اللاعب الأرجنتيني، قال: “لقد عرضت جوليان ألفاريز على برشلونة مقابل 20 مليون يورو، وتُدفع على أقساط، لكنهم رفضوا ذلك”.

غادر توريس مانشستر سيتي في ديسمبر 2021 للانضمام إلى أبطال الدوري الإسباني الموسم الحالي، ووقع على عقد لمدة 5 سنوات مع شرط جزائي بقيمة مليار يورو.

لسوء الحظ، عانى اللاعب البالغ من العمر 23 عامًا من فترة غير منتظمة حتى الآن، حيث سجل 14 هدفًا فقط وقدم تسعة تمريرات حاسمة في 71 مباراة.

بينما جوليان ألفاريز، رغم أنه كان بديلًا لـ هالاند في الموسم الماضي، لكنه سجل 17 هدفًا وصنع 5 تمريرات حاسمة في 49 مباراة بمختلف المسابقات وفاز بالثلاثية التاريخية مع مانشستر سيتي.

كما ساعد ألفاريز منتخب الأرجنتين للفوز ببطولة كأس العالم قطر 2022، وتوّج هدافًا للبطولة، بعد عام من تتويجه بلقب كوبا أمريكا.
