Luiz Fernando Gomes: 'Pequenez rubro-negra'

Spinners, fielders give Sri Lanka first win

Sri Lanka Women put up a strong performance on the field to win the fourth Twenty20 game against West Indies Women by 14 runs, their first in the five match series which West Indies now lead 3-1

ESPNcricinfo staff08-May-2012
ScorecardSri Lanka Women put up a strong performance on the field to win the fourth Twenty20 game against West Indies Women by 14 runs, their first in the five match series which West Indies lead 3-1.Chasing Sri Lanka’s total, West Indies opener Juliana Nero built a solid foundation with 32 runs and took West Indies past 50 for the loss of one wicket. However, Sri Lanka turned the tables with aggressive fielding which led to four run-outs and Maduri Samuddika, playing her first Twenty20 on this tour, bowled a stifling spell of 4-0-11-3. West Indies lost their last seven wickets for only 23 runs to fritter away a good start as no one apart from Nero was able to get to a double-digit score.Sri Lanka’s innings had followed a similar pattern as they were reduced from 51 for one to 62 for seven in three overs. However, an unbeaten 32-run partnership between Dilani Manodara and Sripali Weerakkody helped Sri Lanka reach 94, which in the end proved to be enough. The last match of the series will be played in Port of Spain on Wednesday.

Kohli working on curbing aggression

Virat Kohli, India’s one-day vice-captain, has said he been working on improving his on-field attitude with his captain, MS Dhoni

Virat Kohli, India’s one-day vice-captain, has said he been working on improving his on-field attitude with his captain, MS Dhoni.”I have been speaking to MS [Dhoni] a lot about it [on-field displays of aggression],” Kohli told . “He is one who doesn’t sink or go above that ‘calm line’; he is someone who is always around that line.”He keeps telling me that once I [learn to] stay around that line, I will improve as a cricketer. If that graph goes up too much or drops, you end up putting yourself under pressure.”The upcoming home season, Kohli said, could help India’s young batsmen gain the confidence they need to succeed at the Test level. “It’s a good thing that we will play at home. I can cite my example. Before Tests in Australia, I had played against West Indies [in India] and got a few runs. That boosted my confidence.”Kohli was the only India batsman who got to 300 runs – apart from being the only centurion – during India’s 4-0 drubbing in Australia, and he was their leading run-scorer in the ODI series that followed as well. Prior to that Australia tour, Kohli had scored half-centuries in both innings of the only Test he played in the home series against West Indies. In the next 12 months, India play two home Tests against New Zealand in August-September, followed by four against England and four more against Australia. In the wake of India’s recent poor showing in overseas Tests and the retirement of their established No. 3, Rahul Dravid, this period is expected to offer a couple of young batsmen a chance to establish themselves in the line-up.In this scenario, batsmen like Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary are pushing for a run in the Test team. But this doesn’t put extra pressure on him, Kohli said.”I like challenges. You look to improve in areas that you wouldn’t have thought of before. I don’t pay attention to comparisons. Six or seven of us are there, who will all be playing for India for a long time. Among the lot I will leave Rohit out, as he is [the most] talented among the lot. I know we will all be colleagues in the Indian team in near future.”Still, in the lead-up to the New Zealand Tests, Kohli said, his practice sessions will intensify. “We will have some practice games. Even if we don’t have, I am sure to increase the hours I put in at the nets. I will be batting for at least three hours.”Each individual has his own way of preparing. I will again be starting from zero and would like to improve as a batsman.”

Wade out to cement wicketkeeper position

Matthew Wade is out to make the Australia wicketkeeper’s spot his own on their tour of England

Matthew Wade’s Man of the Match performance in Australia’s Test win over West Indies in Dominica proved his ability to adapt to new conditions•AFP

A word of warning to England, Brad Haddin and Tim Paine: Matthew Wade is out to make the Australia wicketkeeper’s spot his own on this tour. As Michael Clarke’s team prepared for what is expected to be a testing warm-up against a strong Essex team at Chelmsford on Tuesday, Wade said he was not simply in England for a first glimpse of the northern sun and softer, seaming pitches, and intended to make himself indispensable for future assignments.Having earned his way into the ODI and Twenty20 teams over the past 12 months, Wade added the Test berth in the West Indies, deputising for Haddin after he flew home to be with his ill daughter. Wade grew impressively in poise and performance across the Caribbean trip, culminating in a century to clinch the Test series for the visitors in Dominica. Compelling as it was, Wade remains wary of others ready to take the spot back. And they will be after his place should Wade have one poor tour or match: Haddin retained his Cricket Australia contract and will be considered for Australia’s next Test match, against South Africa in Brisbane in November. Paine, meanwhile, has shrugged off a serious finger fracture and will don the gloves for Australia A against England Lions after the ODIs have concluded.”Experience over here is a big thing for me, but I want to play well over here, I don’t want to just get the experience,” Wade said at Lord’s. “I struggled early in the West Indies tour trying to get used to those conditions, we were only there for a couple of days before we played the first one-dayer.”So this two weeks coming over earlier has been a great help for me and some of the younger players that haven’t played over here before. We’ve got a chance to play a little bit of cricket, some trial games and build momentum into the series. I want to play good cricket and hope to cement my spot in the team.”Part of Wade’s challenge in England is to make a success of a floating position in the batting order that may vary anywhere between Nos. 1 and 7. He went out to meet the new ball with David Warner at Leicestershire but was then dropped down to seven against Ireland to accommodate Peter Forrest at No. 3 and Shane Watson opening.”Luckily I’ve done it a little bit for Victoria so it’s not mentally a big swing for me,” he said. “I’ve opened the batting for the last three or four years at home and then before that, so it’s not a huge swing, as long as I know a few days out what I’m doing and I can prepare for that.”Sometimes batting down the order can give you that little bit of freedom you need. Obviously opening the batting over here is going to be quite difficult and early wickets are a key, so sometimes it’s nice to go down and just be able to free the arms a little bit.”Wade certainly did so in his century against the West Indies at Windsor Park, showing how much he had learned over two months on low, spinning pitches with a furious sprint from 50 to 100. It was a game-shaping innings, justly acknowledged with the match award, and a piece of footage that England’s analysts will have pored over.”I haven’t looked back too much at that tour. But it’s nice to come off the end of a tour doing what I did and leading into another tour with a little bit of confidence,” Wade said. “Depending on where I bat I’ve just got to play my role in the team and fingers crossed that I can do that.”I’m not sure quite what to expect. I’ve spoken to a few of the senior players and the swing conditions here are obviously different at the top of the order, the wickets will play a part, but I’m not 100% sure. I’m open-minded going into this series, soaking it all in and trying to learn as much as I can.”From behind the stumps, Wade has seen Australia’s pace stocks improve, and had little hesitation when queried on whether the tourists had the firepower to dislodge England’s in-form opening combination of Alastair Cook and Ian Bell.”We’ve got three or four blokes who bowl over 150 kilometres an hour – it’s been a bit of a nightmare in the past few weeks facing those guys in the nets,” Wade said. “So absolutely we’ve got the firepower to counter those guys. In any ODI your top two or three batters are important, if they’re scoring hundreds you’re going to win the game, so hence their record is outstanding at the moment, and we’ve got to find a way to dismiss those guys and also find a way for our top three or four batsmen to score big scores.”

De Villiers leads charge as bowlers suffer

Both the Derbyshire and the South African attacks conceded heavily as over 400 runs were scored and only five wickets taken in the day

It was a struggle for the bowlers at the County Ground in Derby, despite the green pitch, as both the Derbyshire and the South African attacks conceded heavily. Over 400 runs were scored and only five wickets taken on a day that belonged to batsmen. The South Africans declared after posting 365 runs and having given most of their middle order and some of the fringe players a bat. Unlike the tour match against Worcestershire, they did not give their bowlers time in the middle on this occasion.AB de Villiers was the standout performer for the South Africans and retired three runs short of a century. Hashim Amla laid the foundations with a sprightly 42 and JP Duminy contributed with 69, while Faf du Plessis came good in his first appearance in whites for the national side with an undefeated 68 and Albie Morkel weighed in with 49 not out.In response, Debyshire’s South Africa-born opener Wayne Madsen and Australia’s Usman Khawaja reached the close having seen off South Africa’s new-ball attack and tucked into some of the more wayward change bowlers. The only wicket to fall on the hosts’ side was that of Matt Lineker, who got a thin outside edge off Vernon Philander’s bowling and was caught by back-up gloveman Thami Tsolekile.Jacques Rudolph was the only South Africa batsman to miss out. After three confident boundaries and despite looking comfortable he fell to Alasdair Evans in the fourth over. Amla, who opened the batting in Alviro Petersen’s absence and in place of Graeme Smith, despite the captain being declared fit, faced 20 balls without scoring before lashing out.He took 16 runs off Evans’ fifth over, starting with a drive through the covers, then a pull behind square and ending with a straight drive. The sleeping giant had woken up.Amla also hit the first six of the South Africans’ innings, a pull over fine leg, and looked in imperious form. Against the run of play, however, he was bowled when he pushed forward to a straight delivery from Ross Whiteley and missed the ball, ending a stand of 54 to which Duminy had contributed nine runs.Duminy pushed on with de Villiers on the other end. He brought out the cut, to open his boundary account after 43 balls, while de Villiers had much of his range on display. With an array of spectacular driving, he took 13 runs off a Whiteley over and 11 off the following one from David Wainwright to overtake Duminy and bring up his half-century before lunch, off 46 balls. The interval did nothing to slow de Villiers, who began the second session with a six over fine leg. He played a chanceless innings and provided a perfect foil to Duminy, who found it tougher to adjust to the conditions. He was circumspect against the seamers, Mark Footitt and Matt Higginbottom, but found run-scoring easier against the left-arm spin of Wainwright.De Villiers marched towards a century but called time on his innings three runs before, allowing du Plessis to bat for the first time on tour. Shortly after, Duminy offered a tame return catch to Wainwright.Albie Morkel and du Plessis kept the run-rate above five an over and although both are unlikely to feature in the Test starting XI, made strong cases for themselves. The South Africans had accumulated over 300 runs before tea and batted for less than an hour after before deciding to give the bowlers a run.Dale Steyn did not bowl but all the other bowlers took part. Petersen is the only member of the South African squad who will not play in the match, as he still needs at least four days to recover from a grade one strain of the right hamstring. Both Smith and Jacques Kallis, who was suffering from lower-back spasms, were named in South Africa’s 15.The South African players wore black armbands to mourn the death of Titans CEO Elise Lombard, who died yesterday.
