Sangakkara credits Sri Lanka's self-belief in series win

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara was unsurprisingly full of praise for his team after they wrapped up their first ever series victory on Australian soil with a 29-run win in the second one-dayer at the Sydney Cricket Ground.”There’s a lot to be taken out of the way we played these games,” he said. “It’s fantastic. We played the way we believed we could coming here. It was just a case of us fighting to convert every opportunity and tonight I thought it was a great all-round performance.”The last time Sri Lanka were in Australia, in 2007-08, they were beaten 2-0 in the Test series and failed to reach the final of the CB series, which also included India. This time, they met an Australian side struggling for form, having lost five consecutive games across all formats going into this series. But Sangakkara insisted that Australia’s struggles didn’t take the gloss off a maiden series win down under.”It means a lot,” he said. “This is a stage we always wanted to get to where everyone does what is asked of them and you can’t ask any more of the players. They have grown in stature and self-belief. Sri Lankan cricket seems to be in really good hands going forward.”While Sri Lanka’s new generation of players, such as opening batsman Upul Tharanga and allrounders Thisara Perera and Angelo Mathews, played a major role in the team’s victory, Sangakkara also made special mention of Muttiah Muralitharan, who is on his final tour of the country.”What more can he do?” Sangakkara said of Muralitharan. “To win the series in Australia on his last tour here. We are thankful to have a champion like him in the side.”

Anderson heads home for birth of second child

James Anderson set off for home on Tuesday, where he will be attending the birth of his second child

James Anderson cut short his celebrations at the end of England’s crushing innings-and-71-run victory over Australia in Adelaide on Tuesday to set off for home where he will be attending the birth of his second child. England’s team director, Andy Flower, confirmed Anderson’s departure as the remainder of the squad arrived in Melbourne ahead of the team’s three-day warm-up match against Victoria, adding that he is expected to arrive back in Australia ahead of the Perth Test.Anderson, 28, claimed six wickets in the match including two key breakthroughs on the fifth and final morning but remained with the squad for only a few hours before boarding a flight back to London. He is the latest England cricketer to follow the example set by the current captain, Andrew Strauss, who missed a Test in Lahore in 2005 for the same reason, while most recently Kevin Pietersen flew back from England’s World Twenty20 campaign in May for the birth of his of son Dylan. While Anderson is sure to have been rested for the Victoria fixture, his journey is the furthest of its type that any player has yet had to make, and it will leave him just two days to re-acclimatise ahead of the third Test in Perth on December 16. While Flower admitted it was “not ideal”, he stressed that it was important for the players to maintain their work-life balance, even in the midst of a series as significant as the Ashes.”He left last night, and he’s going to be there for the birth of his child,” Flower said. “We hope everything goes well, and he’ll be back a few days before the Perth Test. It’s not ideal, not perfect, but we try to get the balance right between our commitments to England and our responsibility to the individual and family. His wife and kids come ahead of this, but we try to get the balance right. It’s not great that he’ll have to be on this plane all the time, he’ll have a bit of jetlag, but that’s what we’re dealing with.”We’ve set a precedent in the past for making sure that people can be back home for the birth of a child if possible and if that’s what they want. If that’s not necessary in their particular circumstances then it would be great to have everyone here all the time. But he should be back and in working order for the third Test.”At any rate, Anderson did not miss much of a post-match party, because as Flower was at pains to point out, the series is far from over, and despite the apparent disarray that has been sweeping through the Australian squad, the onus is on the touring team to keep their focus through to the end of the trip.”They were pretty muted, as far as I know,” Flower said of the team’s celebrations. “There’s a long way to go in this series. We work hard for any victory, and to win a first-class game takes an enormous amount of effort and skill – and the same goes for Test matches, even more so. It’s good for the guys to let their hair down, but they are focused on what’s ahead. We know how serious the challenge is ahead of us.”With Anderson temporarily out of action, and Stuart Broad also flying home due to a torn stomach muscle – though not until the end of the third Test – the attention now turns to the search for a replacement fast bowler, with Ajmal Shahzad, Chris Tremlett and Tim Bresnan all expected to line up at the MCG on Friday for what is in effect a three-way shoot-out.Flower, however, didn’t quite see it that way, and said that he already had an indication of which player he would like to slot into the team for a venue that is starting to regain its reputation as one of the fastest and bounciest wickets in the world.”You don’t judge people on one performance,” Flower said. “Obviously, we have ideas in mind who would replace Broad. But we will get 270 overs of viewing our potential replacement, and I’d prefer to emphasise some of the qualities of whoever takes his place, rather than that person to be another Stuart Broad. They are individuals with their own qualities that should be celebrated, and used.”It’s really unlucky [for Stuart], because he’s been an integral part of our side and our relative successes over the last couple of years. It’s not good for him; it’s not good for the side, but these things happen. We weren’t totally naive in thinking we’d get through the whole Test series without injuries to any of our quicks, and we thought it was a priority to get some of our back-up quicks into good nick. They had a good run-out in Hobart; they’ll get another one here against the Vics – and you’ve got to factor these things in.

Man City: Jesus touted for summer exit

Manchester City have seen a couple of young attacking talents leave their squad over the past few years such as Leroy Sane and Ferran Torres.

Now that the next summer transfer window is around the corner, it seems as though another prominent City attacker could be set to wave goodbye to the Etihad Stadium in the coming months.

What’s the news?

According to journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano in the latest edition of his podcast (via City Xtra), the expectation remains that Gabriel Jesus will leave City at the end of the season.

Having been linked with a move to fellow Premier League club Arsenal, Romano said that the north London club are “really, really keen and interested” in the Brazilian.

Since joining the Manchester club back in the 2017 January transfer window from Palmeiras, the attacker has made 232 appearances in total for the Citizens across all competitions.

In those appearances, the 25-year-old has scored 95 goals and delivered 46 assists along the way.

Terrible news for Guardiola

Prior to tonight’s highly anticipated Champions League clash against Real Madrid, the forward has been in a hot vein of form, with six goals and one assist in his past four Premier League games.

He also scored one in last week’s thrilling 4-3 clash against the newly crowned La Liga champions.

To further highlight his attacking prowess, no other City player has racked up more goal-creating actions than Jesus (17) in the league throughout this campaign.

This shows just how much of a deadly and consistent goal threat he can be from different attacking positions across the pitch.

It also proves just how much of a miss he’d be for City if he were to leave, which makes this claim from Romano bad news for Pep Guardiola.

Having showered the Brazilian with praise in terms of his character as well as actions on the pitch, the City boss would surely be disappointed to not only see the player leave in the summer, but also join another Premier League club, if Arsenal do end up securing his signature.

With all of that in mind, the idea of selling Jesus in the upcoming transfer window should not even be entertained by anyone at the Manchester club.

'Batting was pathetic in end overs' – Karnataka coach

Madhya Pradesh have handed over the initiative to Karnataka with generosity that is in keeping with the spirit of the holiday season

Karnataka hold the aces in their quarter-final clash against Madhya Pradesh. It would, however, be more appropriate to say that the hosts have handed over the initiative with generosity that is in keeping with the spirit of the holiday season. Despite MP’s well-documented resurgence, this fixture was always expected to be a mismatch. Ironically for MP, it has so far proved to be a complete reversal from their Plate League days when a weak bowling attack often left their batsmen with too much to do. In Indore, it was the batsmen who let the team down on the first day; the bowlers put in a big effort on the second, but fielding lapses allowed Karnataka to move ahead, despite being well short of their best.Sanath Kumar, the Karnataka coach, minced no words when asked to describe his side’s effort on the second day, when five batsmen perished for scores between 29 and 49. “Absolutely bad batting,” was his succinct summation. “We could have easily been 320 for 4. Instead we find ourselves at 306 for 8, since our batsmen kept throwing away their starts. The last five overs [when Jalaj Saxena picked up three cheap wickets] were pathetic.”It seemed like a harsh evaluation. After all, his side had pushed the lead to three figures, with two wickets in hand, on a pitch where the bowlers had skittled MP out for 200 on the opening day. “The batsmen were finding it difficult since the ball was not coming on to the bat,” he conceded. “But that can be no excuse.”Of the lot, only Amit Verma managed to push ahead after getting used to the slow conditions. His stroke-filled 85 was the cornerstone of Karnataka’s lead, but it was an innings that underlined the kind of season he has had. He is currently fifth in the run-charts, with six half-centuries – the highest by any batsmen in the tournament – and just one ton. While players like S Badrinath and Wasim Jaffer have ensured their fifties yielded big hundreds, Verma has succumbed to carelessness too often. Sanath was left wondering how much more he could have accomplished with better application.”Amit is not getting the big runs,” Sanath said. “Too many 70s and 80s before throwing the wicket away. I have been speaking to him about it, and gave him a piece of my mind today as well. He should keep improving and not settle for half-centuries.”Sanath reserved his words of praise for the opposition’s bowlers, who showed tremendous heart all day. “To be honest, they bowled really well, and to their fields,” he said. “If they had held on to their catches, we would have been in a much worse situation.”It was a sentiment shared by Sanath’s opposite number, MP coach Mukesh Sahni. “Our bowlers tried very hard, Jalaj Saxena in particular. It has been a bad couple of days for us, and it has nothing to do with the talent in the side. It is just the mental aspect. (Yesterday, the youngsters played too many shots),” he reflected ruefully. “Once the batting fails, it becomes imperative to hold on to the half-chances, but things went wrong right from the first evening [when Mohnish Mishra dropped Robin Uthappa].”It is, however, crucial to remain positive. We hope to have them chasing a tricky target on the final day. The plan is to get the last two wickets early and then bat positively. There is no need to play too many shots – normal, positive batting will do the trick.”Devendra Bundela, the MP captain, was even more bullish about his side’s chances. “The game is 60-40 right now in their favour,” he said. “We have nothing to lose and we will give it our best. We will look to restrict the lead to around 120 and bat positively tomorrow. The opening partnership will be crucial. I hope to set a target of around 220 and go for the outright win.”His parting shot will leave the Karnataka camp a touch concerned. “It is a knockout game. There will be pressure on the fourth day if you are chasing a target, even if it is not very big,” he said. It is a pressure Karnataka know only too well after their heartbreak in last year’s final. It is a situation they won’t want to find themselves in, against this spirited MP unit that is eager to make amends for its lapses.

Corinthians sofre com desfalques, e Carille ainda busca time ideal

Pakistan players unlikely to get overdue payments from ICL

The Pakistan players who took part in the now-defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL) face a bleak future in trying to secure payments of US$2 million still owed to them

The Pakistan players who took part in the now-defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL) face a bleak future in trying to secure payments of US$2 million still owed to them. Officials who ran the league, which wasn’t officially recognised by the BCCI or the ICC, have refused to respond to Moin Khan, the former Pakistan captain, who coached the popular Lahore Badshahs side in the league and represented the players as well. The league, which attracted a huge number of international players who were subsequently banned by their home boards for playing in an unsanctioned league, actually pre-dated the IPL. It was city-based, but ownership patterns were different; the entire league was owned and run by Essel Pvt Ltd, which owns the Zee group of companies. But it soon ran into financial difficulties and organised its last season in 2008-09, Lahore beating Hyderabad Heroes in a best-of-three final.Since then, the 19 Pakistan players who played in the league, including former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf and allrounder Abdul Razzaq, have served a legal notice to league officials but have not heard from them. “None of the officials are picking up the phone now, we’ve been trying them for months,” Moin told ESPNcricinfo. “We’ve been paid three-fourth of the entire payment we were owed but they still owe us for last season. Not just the players, but support staff and other officials; we’re owed US$2.2 million.”It isn’t just players from Pakistan who are owed money. Tim May, chief executive FICA (the world players’ body), has been in contact with a number of players from around the world about outstanding payments. “It’s not just us,” Moin said. “Millions of dollars are owed to players from Australia, New Zealand, West Indies. We’ve been in constant contact with Tim May but we’ve been told now that a legal process could be very lengthy, expensive and not guarantee that we get our money.”Additionally, strained political and diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan make the prospect of cross-border legal action even more complicated and prolonged. “We don’t know what to do anymore,” Moin said. “We were told so many things by Himanshu Mody and Subhash Chandra and now there is nothing from them.”Former Test fast bowler Shabbir Ahmed also expressed his frustration with the way affairs had panned out. “I don’t regret my decision [in joining the ICL],” he told the . “When ICL organisers negotiated with us, their offers were huge. But it’s been two years and they still haven’t cleared our dues.”
