Former India captain Anil Kumble has said that his responsibilities as National Cricket Academy (NCA) chairman will involve the moulding of the personalities of young players in addition to imparting cricketing skills. Kumble’s appointment to the role, replacing Ravi Shastri, was announced by the BCCI on Wednesday.”The way I see it, it’s an opportunity to put together a structure that will help in the development of young cricketers,” Kumble told . “The role of the NCA is not just to churn out cricketers, but to churn out really good personalities and well-rounded individuals.”This is not something that will happen in a year or two. It’s a continuous process for various sets of cricketers, right from the youngsters who are in the NCA to those who come back to it at different stages.”Kumble retired from international cricket in 2008, finishing as India’s highest wicket-taker in the Test and ODI formats. He has continued playing in the IPL, with his elevation to the captaincy role for Royal Challengers Bangalore sparking a revival in the team’s fortunes. After finishing seventh out of eight teams in the inaugural edition, they reached the knock-out stages of the next two seasons under him, making the cut for the Champions League on both occasions. The NCA role puts him in a good position to pursue his ambition of guiding India’s young cricketing talent.”It will help that I’m still involved in that many of the youngsters around would have played either with me or against me. It will help that they have some sort of comfort level with me and that they can approach me if they need something,” Kumble said.While saying he was keen on developing the next line of cricketers for the country, Kumble did not lose sight of the present. Rigorous schedules and lucrative Twenty20 leagues have had their say on fitness, forcing India to play important tournaments without their first-choice cricketers. Kumble was aware of the situation and told the newspaper that the NCA would address the challenge of keeping the players match-fit.”There must be a pipeline in place for a fresh talent pool to emerge, but we must also make sure the present talent pool remains focussed, motivated and in the best physical and mental shape to keep delivering for the country,” he said.

MS Dhoni was full of praise for his bowlers, and the way his side showed character despite injuries to key players, following India’s clean sweep of Australia in the two-Test series.Both Tests in this series were heading towards draws before India’s bowlers triggered Australia’s second-innings collapses, setting up close finishes in each of the games. “I think the effort put in by the players, especially the bowlers, was really outstanding because by losing tosses I am not really helping them out,” Dhoni said.”Every time, especially in the subcontinent, we are having to bowl first. First innings [in Bangalore] we couldn’t get any kind of reverse-swing because the wicket and the square were not so dry, which meant they had to turn up and look for alternative ways to get the batsmen out. Still they were more than willing to come up with spells whenever needed. This was not a track where a match can get over in four-and-a-half days. It was not a turning track where the spinners can just bowl and get wickets.”As has often been the case of late, India played a Test series without their first-choice XIs, and also lost players along the way. VVS Laxman and Ishant Sharma needed injections and tablets to stand up straight, but they rescued India in a famous finish in Mohali. Gautam Gambhir, too, injured his knee and had to sit out.All the three replacements, though, did their jobs in Bangalore, and Dhoni acknowledged that. “Not only in Tests, we have been playing series without our key players,” Dhoni said. “Consistently we have not played our strongest side.”I am fortunate to have a side that has performed very well in the past one-and-a-half years and the credit goes to them. Whether it is the youngsters or the seniors, they have always performed whenever they get the opportunity. But whenever he has got an opportunity to play games, he has scored decent amount of runs. You could complain maybe that he got the kind of start he needed, but hasn’t scored big runs. In this match, he really made it big. He got the start, went onto cross the century barrier, and continued his innings. It was a good learning experience for him. In the same way [Cheteshwar] Pujara, too, batted really well.”Having beaten Australia, their biggest rivals over the last decade, 2-0 in their last two series, Dhoni said India needed to create bowling reserves if they were to dominate world cricket like Australia did. “If our bowling lot can grow – four-five good fast bowlers, and one or two more spinners, the workload can be spread,” Dhoni said. “It is very difficult for the fast bowlers to play every Test. Within the next 20 days, we will start another three-match series on similar wickets. You just can’t turn up there and put the ball there, these pitches take a lot of effort. There is a lot of pressure on the fast bowlers, and especially with the four-bowler combination, spinners have to bowl a lot of overs. Especially when the captain keeps losing the toss.”Dhoni also credited the side for having come together well despite the limited time for preparation. “The whole team didn’t get a chance to have practice sessions together because some of the boys were playing the Champions League,” Dhoni said. “We got limited time, but what is impressive is the way we utilised those practice sessions in the right manner. Everyone was up for it.”Dhoni made it a point to praise the team for handling the pressure situations well. “Most of the times, this is a series that has plenty of hype created around it, and it’s good that it ended without any controversy… One good thing in both the Test matches, even though the last-innings targets were not huge, was that there was pressure on both the sides. Ultimately it was a close finish in both the games. You may look at this scorecard and say this was an easy win, but still there was nervousness in the dressing room. I think it was a good short Test series we had.”

What’s the word?

As per Calciomercatio, the Hammers are believed to be one of the clubs keeping an eye on the 21-year-old, with Serie A giants Juventus and Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund also credited with an interest in the Frenchman.

Previous reports have suggested the 6 foot 4 colossus could be available for a fee in the region of £33m, with two years still to run on his existing deal at Stade Louis II, making him an attractive option in the upcoming window.

The France U21 international had seemingly come close to a Premier League switch in January, with Newcastle United heavily linked with securing his services, albeit with the St James’ park outfit eventually settling on a move for Brighton’s Dan Burn.

Ogbonna Upgrade

With a top-four place still potentially within their grasp and with a Europa League semi-final clash on the horizon, things are currently going swimmingly for David Moyes’ side, with the Scotsman having worked wonders since the start of his second stint in charge.

Much of the former Manchester United manager’s success has been in recruitment, with the 58-year-old continually making astute moves in the market after a scattergun approach under his predecessor Manuel Pellegrini.

In Badiashile, the Hammers boss could well have found his next perfect acquisition, with the youngster having previously been dubbed a “great talent” by Monaco vice president Oleg Petrov, following his eye-catching displays for the Ligue 1 outfit.

As evidenced by his soaring market valuation – the £14k-per-week star having seen his value rise from £135k to £25.2m in the space of just three years – the starlet is only seemingly going to keep progressing in the coming years.

At just 21, he also represents an ideal and timely replacement for current first-team favourite Angelo Ogbonna, with the Italian central defender set to turn 34 at the end of May and with possible doubts over what his level will be once he returns from his long-term absence.

Both left-footed and of similar build – with the more senior man marginally shorter at 6 foot 3 – the two have very similar playing styles, making the younger man a potentially ideal replacement for the long-serving veteran.

Equally, there is also evidence to suggest that the potential new arrival is already outperforming the one-time Torino man.

In the 11 games the current West Ham man has played in the top-flight this season, he has averaged just one interception and 0.6 tackles per game, as per SofaScore, while by contrast, Badiashile has registered 1.1 interceptions and 1.4 tackles per 90, in his 19 league outings.

Even in his youth, the Limoges-born star already offers a wealth of experience, having already made 114 appearances for his current side – chipping in with three goals and three assists in that time – since making his senior debut back in 2018.

With just three clean sheets to his name this season and a fairly meagre 6.93 match rating, as per SofaScore, in the French top-flight, there is obvious room for improvement, although Moyes has already shown he can coax the best out of those at his disposal.

As Tottenham continue their search for a new centre-back, one man who fans might have thought could emerge as a potential leader of their back-line several years ago, is Steven Caulker.

Speaking back in October 2012, his former team-mate William Gallas tipped him to “make it to the very top of the game in this country”, while Brendan Rodgers – who had him during his initial loan spell at Swansea – said: “He had a fantastic season for me. He has made a massive jump in his career through playing Premier League games at Swansea.

“For me, he is a young player, who the more he can play the better he will become, and I am sure he will become a great asset for Tottenham.”

It said a lot about his impressive performances at Cardiff that just eight months after his £11m permanent move to Wales, then Spurs boss Tim Sherwood was keen on signing him for the club again.

In an interview with The Guardian back in 2017, Caulker was refreshingly honest about his issues off-the-pitch during his early years at Spurs, and how that all came to a head in a showdown meeting with Daniel Levy during a post-season trip to the Bahamas.

He revealed: “He just said: ‘The way you act is unbelievable. You either sort yourself out or go but I can assure you, if you leave, you’ll be going down, not up.’ I was young, stupid. I took it as a challenge, a chance to prove him wrong. I was so immature. So I went to Cardiff and, for six months, everything was amazing. I was captain, the manager, Malky Mackay, knew I had some issues but offered to be there for me.

“I felt wanted, so there was no gambling, no heavy binges but the second he was sacked, all the demons came back. That’s all it took. Even before we played the next game, I’d convinced myself nothing would be the same. That’s the kind of catastrophic thinking I’ve had to address.”

Now plying his trade for a relegation battling Gaziantep – they are just two places above the drop zone – the Turkish Super Lig side are the 11th club for whom Caulker has played since making his first-team debut for the Lilywhites.

Aged 30, Caulker’s career may not see a return to the Premier League anymore, and that’s a real indication of how his career has gone since seemingly looking like a future Spurs stalwart.

He may not be playing in English football’s top-flight, or the cornerstone of this Spurs defence under Antonio Conte, but it is good to see Caulker seemingly back to enjoying what he does after a tough and challenging few years.
