Richards looks to T20 to lay ghosts of 2007

Sir Viv Richards believes that next week’s World Twenty20 will provide Caribbean cricket the perfect opportunity to lay the ghosts of the 2007 World Cup

Sir Viv Richards believes that next week’s ICC World Twenty20 will provide Caribbean cricket the perfect opportunity to lay the ghosts of the 2007 World Cup, and he is optimistic that the lessons learnt both at the IPL and by Trinidad & Tobago during their successful run in last year’s Champions League Twenty20 will give West Indies an excellent chance of progressing in the tournament.”It’s a great opportunity to make some amends for the hiccup that we had during the World Cup that was held in the region,” Richards told Cricinfo. “It was a disaster in my opinion, there were so many things that went wrong, but you don’t want to look back too much. We have an opportunity to move forward now with this new exciting format, and the support in the West Indies will be passionate enough for the world to enjoy.”The 2007 tournament was a crushing disappointment on almost every conceivable level. The ICC’s draconian regulations led to a clampdown on musical instruments and other factors that have made West Indian cricket so vibrant over the years, while the ticket prices were simply too steep too allow any significant levels of local support. The death of Pakistan’s coach, Bob Woolmer, during the early weeks of the tournament cast a further pall over the self-styled “carnival of cricket”, while the early exit of such big-name teams as India and Pakistan took much of the anticipation out of the protracted latter stages of the competition, which was eventually won by Australia in a farcical finish in near-darkness.This time, however, Richards expects a rich fortnight of entertainment in a compact schedule across three venues in Guyana, St Lucia and Barbados. “It’s going to have much more of a Caribbean flavour this time and rightly so,” he said. “I definitely know the tickets will be much more affordable, so that will lead to more relaxed individuals. This is a trial to see how much we’ve learned from last time.”Guyana was one of the venues that came in for some criticism in 2007, with much of the area outside the purpose-built stadium still awaiting completion come the start of the competition. But three years later, Richards is confident they’ll put up a good show on behalf of the region. “They wouldn’t put it on the agenda if it wasn’t ready,” he said. “They are a passionate cricket-loving nation and they always attract good crowds, which is one of the reasons why they were chosen.”Richards’ own island of Antigua will not be hosting any games, however, but such is the lure of Twenty20 cricket, he was sure that there would be plenty interest in the tournament , especially given how much Sir Allen Stanford’s involvement ramped up the profile of the game’s newest format. And he also believed that the West Indies team would respond to the home expectations.”There is excitement in Antigua,” he said. “Remember the attendances we got for the Stanford 20/20. That was even before the IPL, and it was a real success, with big crowds throughout. Our grounds may not be as huge as the grounds in India, but they were a credit to our island. And for that US$20million purse [against England], the professionalism that the team showed proved that they can be successful. With this shortened version they can go places.”One team that has shown the potential of Caribbean cricket in recent times is Trinidad & Tobago, who were the surprise package of the inaugural Champions Trophy in India last year. With passion and panache, and stars such as Kieron Pollard and Ravi Rampaul, they made it all the way to the final of the competition, before losing to New South Wales, spearheaded by a pumped-up Brett Lee.”Trinidad were great representatives of the region, and it shows the region can compete at the very highest level,” said Richards. “That performance was a huge success, not just for Trinidad but the whole Caribbean region. For any young guys who saw that, it’s the sort of motivation they need to gain confidence, to believe that they can also be part of that success.”With the way things are in the world at the moment, it’s good for this tournament to be held in the Caribbean,” said Richards. “When a team goes away from home in soccer, when they get a draw they feel happy about themselves. But now West Indies are at home, with the public behind them, and lots of experience gained in India at the IPL, I’m sure they can be competitive.”Sir Viv Richards is a Johnnie Walker Responsible Drinking Ambassador and is part of a global “Walk with Giants” program, with the message: ‘Be a giant, and don’t drink and drive’

Burn could leave Brighton for Newcastle

Keith Downie has now dropped some exciting Newcastle United transfer news involving Dan Burn.

The Lowdown: Bid made

As per Sky Sports journalist Downie, a bid of £8m from the St. James’ Park faithful has already been rejected by Brighton and Hove Albion to sign Burn, and it is expected that they will go in with another offer before the January transfer window shuts.

While they have signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, and Bruno Guimaraes looks set to join them on Tyneside, they have still not signed a central defender or a left-back, and so these are positions that still need filling as the clock ticks.

The Latest: Burn interested

According to Downie, Burn would be interested in a move to the Magpies before the deadline, as he is a Toon fan:

“Newcastle are expected to go back in for Brighton defender Dan Burn.

“The St James’ Park club have had an initial offer in the region of £8m rejected for the 29-year-old.

“Burn is a Newcastle fan and we’re told he’d be interested in a potential move back north.”

The Verdict: Exciting

The fact that Burn is a NUFC supporter and would be interested in a move back north is very exciting ahead of Transfer Deadline Day, as it means that should a fee with the Seagulls be agreed, personal terms and add-ons should not be a problem when negotiating his transfer.

Crucially, Burn is equally as comfortable at left-back as he is at centre-back, and so can add depth in both positions for Eddie Howe with no difficulties.

Nonetheless, he would be an upgrade on the Magpies boss’ current options, as he averages more tackles, interceptions and passes at a higher accuracy than Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles in the Premier League so far this term (WhoScored).

Even with an opening £8m bid rejected, this is a deal that should not cost too much given he is out of contract next year, and thus could potentially end up being a bargain.

Key props up Kent with mammoth 261

Scorecard
Kent captain Robert Key scored the third double century of his first-classcareer to ensure fellow County Championship strugglers Durham endured atough opening day in Canterbury. The 31-year-old former Test batsman maintained his concentration levels despite short breaks for rain either side of lunch and throughout four excellent spells from former England team-mate Steve Harmison to make 261.Without his knock – which included 38 fours and three sixes across six hours at the crease – Kent would have struggled but instead made 424 all out by stumps. The right-handed opener, who came into the game with a paltry championshipaverage of 14.3 this season, featured in century stands for the third and fifth wickets and hardly played a false shot during his 270-ball stay. His only fortunate boundary came from a top-edged pull that sailed over thekeeper’s head against Harmison who, with 4 for 52, was easily the pick ofDurham’s injury-hit attack.”It was good fun and a long time due,” said Key, after missing out on a career-best score by only 10 runs. “After the poor start I’ve had to the season I probably owe the team some runs and it’s nice to get a decent score under my belt.”Batting first after winning the toss, Key lost opening partner Joe Denly toonly the sixth ball of the day from Harmison, caught behind without scoring when fishing at a legcutter. Then, in Harmison’s next over, Geraint Jones fenced away from his body to steer a catch to Michael Di Venuto at second slip to make it 10 for 2.Martin van Jaarsveld helped Key see off Harmison’s first spell after whichKent’s third-wicket partners began to take the initiative, posting 117 in 25 overs either side of lunch while Durham used seven bowlers in a bid to stem the flow.Van Jaarsveld (30) went five balls after the re-start when his leaden-footed drive against Harmison was snaffled at the second attempt by Dale Benkenstein at slip. Then, four overs later, Sam Northeast became Harmison’s fourth victim after nicking another leg-cutter to new Durham captain Phil Mustard.Key moved to his first century of the summer from 105 balls and found another willing ally in Azhar Mahmood (43) to take Kent to their first batting point with a partnership of 106 in 23 overs. They were only two short of equalling Kent’s fifth-wicket record against Durham when Mahmood edged to slip off Benkenstein.Useful contributions from Alex Blake (31) and Rob Ferley (19) helped Key bat on past tea and pass Ed Smith’s 175 scored at the Riverside in 2000 – the previous best by a Kent batsman against Durham.Key posted his second double hundred for Kent inside 10 months from 223 balls and with 30 fours, but soon after Durham’s Chris Rushworth nipped out Ferley and Simon Cook in the space of three deliveries with the second new ball.Typically, Key countered by hooking the same bowler for a brace of sixes but Rushworth should have had his man caught at midwicket for 233. Benkenstein inexplicably downed a sitter, allowing Key to plunder 18 from the over. The Kent opener fell in the final over of the day only 15 shy of the groundrecord score by a Kent batsman when he was bowled around his legs by BenHarmison attempting an audacious clip to fine leg.

O treinador armou a Ponte com Aranha, Emerson, Renan Fonseca, Wesley Matos e Luan Peres; Mendoza, Xavier e Léo Artur; Tiago Real, Silvinho e Yuri.

Everton: Luka Jovic eyed for late swoop

‘Everton [are] considering’ a late swoop for Real Madrid’s Luka Jovic, according to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath.

The lowdown

Everton are set to announce the loan signing of Donny van de Beek from Manchester United, their second temporary addition of the January transfer window after Anwar El-Ghazi joined from Aston Villa.

They are only allowed two domestic loans, but they can still bolster their ranks with short-term deals for overseas players.

Jovic has played 15 times for Real Madrid this season, but former Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti hasn’t afforded him any starting opportunities in La Liga.

The latest

McGrath tweeted a link to a transfer report from The Telegraph, along with a summary of Everton’s last-gasp interest in Jovic ahead of tonight’s winter window deadline.

The journalist stated: “Everton considering Luka Jovic as a loan option from #RealMadrid to strengthen Frank Lampard’s attack. Player will be allowed to leave on loan. #EFC can make foreign loans but no more domestic after arrivals of El Ghazi and Van de Beek”.

The verdict

Jovic’s best season to date was 2018/19, when he bagged 17 league goals for Eintracht Frankfurt and netted 10 more in the Europa League to help the German outfit reach the semi-finals. Unsurprisingly, he featured in both the Bundesliga and Europa League Team of the Season that year.

Real Madrid paid £52.4m to sign him off the back of that stellar campaign, but it simply hasn’t worked out for him at the Bernabeu. He has managed a measly three goals in his 47 outings for Los Blancos.

Perhaps the key to extracting the best out of him will be to deploy him in a front two, as manager Adi Hutter did in that glorious 2018/19 campaign. Also, it’s worth noting that Jovic is a player who has won glowing praise from Lionel Messi, who described him as ‘magical’.

The clock is ticking towards the 11pm deadline, but it’s worth Everton’s while trying to see if they can rescue the Serbian from his Bernabeu nightmare.
