Rangnick could make star signing for MUFC

Manchester United are rumoured to want to sign a number of midfielders during this month, as the side continues to underperform in the Premier League.

There is pressure on Ralf Rangnick to identify the right individuals and there is now a fresh link to one of the most sought after midfielders in world football right now.

What’s the word?

The Athletic has reported that John Murtough has identified Jude Bellingham as top of the list for Man United’s transfer targets.

However, the report claims that the Bundesliga star won’t be targeted to join Old Trafford until the summer, along with Declan Rice, who has also been heavily linked with a move to the club over the next few months.

Bellingham is a popular player, who has been linked to a number of clubs including Red Devils rivals Liverpool, so United will have to make an attractive offer for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder at the end of the season.

Back in October, it was reported that the German outfit had slapped a whopping £101m asking price on the midfielder.

Scott McTominay upgrade

Securing the signature of the £49k-per-week dynamo would surely be an upgrade to their current midfield, and he would likely compete for Scott McTominay’s spot in the team.

The Manchester United midfielder has been the subject of criticism on a number of occasions when the side’s underwhelming form reaches its peak, with his partnership with Fred coming under fire often, will the pair labelled ‘McFred.’

Roy Keane said earlier this season: “Look at the performance of the two midfielders. McTominay is a good, honest player. And they’ve got Fred. As long as those two players are in midfield for Manchester United, they will not be winning any big trophies.

“I can’t believe how short Manchester United are.”

When you compare Bellingham and McTominay this season alone for their clubs in their respective leagues, the 18 year old, who was hailed “scary” by Manchester United legend, Keane, has shown considerable more.

He scored more goals (3 vs 1), made more ball recoveries, attempted and completed more passes, been successful in more take-ons and even from a defensive perspective has won 42 more ground duels in the same number of appearances as his Man United counterpart, McTominay, according to Squawka.

From this comparison alone, it is clear why the board at the 20 league title winning club are eager to sign the youngster, however they will likely need to put themselves in a much more attractive position in the league by securing Champions League football to ensure they can beat their Premier League competitors for his signature.

All-round Mumbai start as favourites

Comparing Mumbai Indians to Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai look the more formidable unit with better all-round players

The Preview by Jamie Alter21-Mar-2010Match factsMonday, March 22
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Big pictureMan under fire: Sourav Ganguly•AFP

Both sides got off to winning ways before they were rudely jolted – Mumbai Indians by top dogs Royal Challengers Bangalore, looking the most balanced side, and Kolkata Knight Riders by Rajasthan Royals, looking the most disheveled. One loss hardly matters when you have 14 to play, but in each of those defeats, the weaknesses of Mumbai and Kolkata were exposed.Mumbai’s tubthumping batsmen, in particular a domestic pair whose preference was to hit through the line, found the bouncer a particularly nasty delivery to cope with at pace, while in the field the slow variations tried by Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard turned out to be utterly ineffective during the Powerplay. In fact after the star new-ball pair of Zaheer Khan and Lasith Malinga, the rest of the bowlers were ruthlessly exposed by Jacques Kallis.Kolkata stumbled to an odd sort of defeat against Rajasthan, particularly struggling to score runs in their chase despite having kept wickets in hand. Neither Brad Hodge, Sourav Ganguly nor Owais Shah was able to hit a long ball and their insipid innings allowed the pressure to build up. In short, Kolkata are lacking firepower with the bat; they really need Chris Gayle into the XI and must be watching the calendar to see when Brendon McCullum will touch down. Both teams will be keen to resume winning ways and if the marquee names play to form this has the makings of a good contest. The battle begins at the top, with Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya pitted against the pace of Ishant Sharma and Shane Bond and Gayle and Hodge against the wealth of experience that Zaheer and Malinga share, not to forget some yorkers and crafty swing. Throw in one of the most economical bowlers of the tournament, Murali Kartik, against a hungry Mumbai middle order and there’s even more to look forward to. Anil Kumble exposed young Saurabh Tiwary’s deficiency against quality spin and Kartik will prove a stern test as well.Comparing the two sides, Mumbai look the more formidable unit with better all-round players. Both teams are coming off defeats but on paper, Mumbai start off as favourites.Team talkMumbai won’t press the alarm button after one loss. Ambati Rayudu injured himself while taking a catch so he’s doubtful. Allrounder Abhishek Nayar is also injured so Shikhar Dhawan might come in his place. Jayasuriya’s poor form will be a worry but such is his stature that he can win them a match on his own on a given day.Kolkata have selection conundrums. Gayle will play his first game, meaning that Shah would be benched. Charl Langeveldt’s fitness is also in doubt, but who can Kolkata drop? With Ajit Agarkar still recovering from injury, Ashok Dinda should keep his place. Cheteshwar Pujara came back into the side for Rohan Gavaskar in the last game but struggled for consistency, so he could be pushed aside too.Previously…Mumbai won both times in the first IPL, by seven wickets and eight wickets. When they came up against each other in South Africa, Mumbai thrashed Kolkata by 92 runs before sneaking a nine-run win.In the spotlightChris Gayle v Mumbai’s fast bowlers: In his first match of the season, Gayle won’t have it easy once he reaches the middle. Zaheer and Malinga have pace and swing and are adept at firing the ball into the blockhole. Zaheer’s penchant for dismissing left-handed openers precedes him and against Gayle, who prefers standing and moving his back leg across, Malinga will also fancy his chances of pinning him at the crease. Gayle had a few issues teeing off early against Zimbabwe’s spinners when they opened the attack in the limited-overs series in the West Indies recently, so it may not be a bad idea giving Harbhajan Singh the ball early in the match.Sourav Ganguly: The Kolkata captain, booed by a section of Rajasthan’s ‘home’ fans in Ahmedabad after the last game, was terse in assessing the loss and called for more intensity from his players. For starters he could do with some intensity himself. Against Rajasthan some of the facets that Ganguly had been derided for as an international player were all too prevalent – he was sluggish between the wickets, keen to turn down sharp singles, and a liability in the field. Kolkata don’t need that from their captain. Despite a partisan Mumbai crowd, ‘dada’ (as Ganguly is widely known) still has his own bunch of die-hards everywhere and, for Kolkata’s sake, maybe he’ll choose the Brabourne Stadium to get off the block in the IPL.SRK’s clan v the Ambani caravan: Shah Rukh Khan, owner of the Kolkata franchise, has made the Eden Gardens his second home but Mumbai will always remain first love for the Bollywood superstar. Wherever Shah Rukh goes a posse of family, celebrity friends and management follows and no doubt, many eyes will be on that gang as well as on the high-profile couple of Mukesh and Neeta Ambani. The owners of the most expensive IPL team are loyal to their side at all their home games – wife Neeta accompanies them everywhere – and they were seen to occupy a large section of a Brabourne stand with friends for the last game.Prime numbers Kartik has the fourth best economy rate of the competition at 5.66. Zaheer and Malinga are the only Mumbai bowlers with an economy rate under 7.42.Mumbai have the best run-rate inside the first nine overs (the strategic time-out is now taken after this juncture, not ten overs) so far – a very satisfying 9.48.Mumbai have conceded the least number of extras – 18 – in the tournament so far. Kolkata have conceded the second most – 28.The chatter”Every game has a story… One shouldn’t get too emotional, though.”

Everton eye Brighton director Ashworth

Lots of Everton fans have been left gushing over some off-field news that has emerged.

As per 90min, the Goodison Park faithful are now ‘keen’ on Brighton and Hove Albion technical director Dan Ashworth, who has previously been linked with a job at Newcastle United.

He already has plenty of pedigree, having been a key figure as his work at the Football Association (FA) helped lead to England winning the U20 and U17 World Cups, in addition to the U19 European Championships, back in 2017.

In 2019, Ashworth became the technical director with the Seagulls, and thus oversaw the appointment of Graham Potter, who has become a great success in guiding them to the top half of the Premier League table, and has since been touted for the Manchester United job.

Nonetheless, he seems to be an appointment that would be very popular among Merseyside club supporters.

The musical chairs that pick India's second spinner

There’s a chair out there. It has India’s back-up spinner written on it. Before every series India play, a few hopefuls run around the chair to music, and the first man to sit on the chair when the music stops, gets selected

Sidharth Monga26-Mar-2010

It is tough to understand the logic or thinking behind the selection of India’s second spinner in recent times•Associated Press

There’s a chair out there. It has India’s back-up spinner written on it. Before every series India play, the national selection committee gathers around the chair, and invites Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra for a little game. The selectors play music, and ask the two spinners to walk around the chair. Suddenly the music stops. The first man to sit on the chair gets picked for India.Turns out, it doesn’t make any difference, because that man doesn’t get enough chances – that is, if he is lucky enough to get a chance in the first place – to show what he has got, and before the next series, the game is played again. Just that a third member, Piyush Chawla, has now been added to the musical chairs that is India’s back-up spinner’s place. And he will be making the trip to the West Indies. This is not to bring Chawla down. He has worked on his legbreaks, and is a smart Twenty20 bowler. This, though, is to ask what wrong has Ojha or Mishra done. Ojha has played nine ODIs, eight of them against Sri Lanka who can be accused of being anything but poor players of spin. He has given away runs at 4.2 an over, and he last played an ODI in February 2009. From then to now, though, the selectors’ muddled thinking has completed a whole spectrum.Ojha went to New Zealand and the West Indies, but was replaced by Mishra for Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy. Mishra did well in the two games he got in South Africa, but without getting a single game against Australia at home, he too was dumped. Ojha was back again, for the home ODIs against Sri Lanka, only to not play a game, and lose his place to Mishra for the tri-series in Bangladesh.Soon after that tri-series, Ojha and Mishra would have thought that their time had come at long last. Harbhajan Singh was to miss the home ODIs against South Africa. After months and months of travelling with the team, they would have felt finally they would get a proper go. The selectors, though, pulled another fast one. For every series Harbhajan played in, India felt a back-up spinner was needed. When Harbhajan was not playing, the selectors went for only one specialist spinner, and gave the other spot to bits-and-pieces R Ashwin. Ojha lost out this time. Thankfully for MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja did a decent job, and he didn’t even pick a specialist spinner in the XIs.Reason, logic, form etc. are clearly not important. The message being sent out to these spinners can’t be good. There is no attempt to even sort out who is the Test spinner, and who is more suited to limited overs. Both of them took similar turns in Tests, getting actual caps there. It is also clear that Ojha is a more effective limited-overs spinner than in Tests. Yet, since his debut in June 2008, he has played only nine ODIs and four Twenty20s, but has travelled the world. One can empathise with the selectors. This is not an enviable scenario: to make choices when the spinner cupboard is not exactly bustling with options. What can’t be understood, though, is how they are judging who to select when they don’t see them play, when they keep them busy for carrying drinks when the domestic season is on, and when they don’t quite consider the IPL as a benchmark for Twenty20.Ojha was the standout Indian spinner in IPL’s last edition, Mishra has been the most impressive of the lot this time. Chawla hasn’t been bad, but he hasn’t exactly done anything stunning to usurp Ojha. So far in this IPL, Ojha has gone at 7.12 an over and has taken four wickets, Mishra has seven wickets at 7.31 an over, and Chawla three wickets at 7.38. Murali Kartik, who went for less than a run a ball last year, and whose 5.57 an over is the second-best economy-rate among bowlers who have bowled 10 overs or more this year, will have a seen-it-all smile on his face: he has known such muddled thinking from even before this selection committee came to power. If Chawla’s batting is the logic, it has occurred too late in the day, after having taken the other two for a ride around the world for two years. Of course Chawla has it in him to vindicate the selectors, but it is unlikely he will get a chance, and even if he does it will be more a chance happening than an intended move.As of now, India’s back-up spinner slot resembles that of freeloaders that Sports Authorities of India sends as part of official teams – a new person for a new meet, on a paid holiday to a new country. When it comes to selecting the second spinner, if musical chairs be the food of thought, play on.

Journalist makes Kessie to Spurs claim

Speaking to Give Me Sport, journalist Sami Mokbel of The Daily Mail has made a Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie as the Lilywhites also reportedly close in on Adama Traore.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye move…

The Ivory Coast international has been a transfer target for Spurs since the beginning of the January transfer window with reports suggesting manager Antonio Conte is ready to make a move.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, according to ESPN, Tottenham transfer chief Fabio Paratici was weighing a lucrative offer to sign Kessie earlier this month with The Telegraph since claiming that they are in fact weighing a move.

Conte is apparently a ‘huge fan’ of the San Siro ace with Mokbel sharing what he knows on the situation.

The Latest: Mokbel makes claim…

The Lilywhites are expected to come to an agreement with Wolves for Traore, say The Athletic, and speaking to GMS, the Mail reporter says that a deal to sign Kessie is also ‘doable’ before the January 31 deadline.

I think that is certainly a deal that could be doable and I think that could be doable sooner rather than later,” he explained.

“I’m talking this window, if both clubs can come to an agreement.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

Signing a midfielder is reportedly one of Conte’s four transfer priorities at Spurs and we believe they don’t come more accomplished than Kessie.

The 52-cap star, despite a being a natural defensive midfield player, has been utilised in a more advanced role at Milan under Stefano Pioli and has thrived – scoring 19 goals since the beginning of 2020/2021 and adding to his career total of 46 (Transfermarkt).

He’s even called ‘sumptuous’ by his manager, and if Tottenham could either land him on a free deal in the summer or this month for a cheaper fee, we believe he could provide a real injection of threat in Conte’s midfield alongside Traore.
