Lage must not let Botman signing slip away

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be going to the transfer window and the new year in a comfortable position as they currently sit eighth in the Premier League, remaining consistent and strong throughout the first half of the season.

Despite a fine start for Wolves, Bruno Lage will face the challenge of maintaining that form and consistency into the second half of the campaign, and the transfer window could certainly help Wolves to stay on course for an opportunity to play in a European tournament next term.

One player linked with a move to Molineux, Sven Botman, knows all about playing European football, as he has contributed to Lille’s Champions League run with three appearances in the tournament so far this season, with the club securing a place in the round of 16.

The 21-year-old was hailed a “leader” by former Lille manager Christophe Galtier, who said: “In football, you have leaders who are vocal, ones who gesticulate and ones who shake the team up… I have a few of those.

“But you also have people who lead by example, through their performances, and it’s true that Sven is emerging as this type of leader.”

Botman might not be a Lille player by the time they face their next Champions League outing against Chelsea in February, given the transfer rumours linking him with Newcastle, AC Milan and Wolves this month.

Wolves are no strangers to the 21-year-old, as it was reported by The Athletic that Lille quoted the English club £35m for the player back in the summer, but the Old Gold were not willing to meet that figure on deadline day and moved on into the season without him.

If the rumours are true that Lage is interested in reigniting a move for the defender, he will need to start making his moves fast to avoid the nightmare of making the same mistake again. It could result in losing out on him to another Premier League club this time, as Newcastle reportedly ramp up their interest.

Fans will be livid if the Lille star goes to another club. His performances this season for Lille have quite rightly grasped attention of many prospective suitors, with a goal and assist for the Ligue 1 champions, combined with his outstanding contributions defensively by making 26 blocks and 62 clearances and receiving 96.9% of his passes successfully so far this season according to data from FBRef.

Wolves fans may be especially annoyed if he goes to a Premier League club like Newcastle, who are currently deep into the relegation zone, compared to Lage’s team who are settled in eighth and competing for a European finish. Indeed, one Old Gold fan took to Twitter to state that “Botman is a must for Wolves”.

Considering that Lage does not have huge depth in that position given that he plays with a three-man defence, and considering Botman’s clear talents and European nous, that particular supporter very much has a point. It would be a nightmare on the club’s part if they allow another suitor such as Newcastle to nab the Dutchman instead.

Hosting the Big Bash final is a major achievement for South Australia, who have not made a domestic decider since losing the 2005-06 one-day tournament

The Big PictureThe Big Bash final is actually the tournament encore, a night when both teams can express themselves knowing the most important work has already been done. By getting this far South Australia and Victoria have qualified for the Champions League Twenty20 in India later in the year and that event is where money can rain. The winner of Saturday’s final in Adelaide receives A$100,000; New South Wales collected US$2.5m for claiming the inaugural Champions League.Victoria, who reached the semi-finals in India last year, are pushing for their fourth title in the five years of the competition and brushed aside Queensland in the preliminary final in Brisbane on Tuesday. They suffered two losses in the group stages, but improved significantly for the major encounters and sense some South Australia frailty after the leaders finished with a bruising defeat to New South Wales. The Redbacks, who are led by the wicketkeeper Graham Manou, surprised all their rivals when they won their first four matches to qualify for the final but then collapsed to 81 in the dead rubber. Hosting the contest at the half-built Adelaide Oval represents a major achievement for South Australia, who have not made a domestic decider since losing the 2005-06 one-day final. The last time they won a trophy was in 1995-96 when they out-lasted Western Australia to grab the Sheffield Shield. Back then, Shaun Tait was 13.Form guide (most recent first)South Australia LWWWW

Watch out for…Shaun Tait was hit for four sixes in an over by David Warner during the last group game, which is not the sort of treatment fast bowlers enjoy. Look for Tait to be fierce when given the ball as he tries to forget the punishment. Tait has been in good form during the series – he has eight wickets at 15.5 – and roughed up the Victorians earlier in the month with 3 for 12.Dirk Nannes started the tournament slowly but has improved at the right time, playing a key role in the preliminary final win with 2 for 26. A strong, aggressive left-arm fast bowler, Nannes is an expert at hurrying up batsmen at the start and end of the innings. Another strong performance will help convince the selectors he should add to his three national Twenty20 appearances.Team newsA big problem for the Redbacks is they are without the brutal allrounder Shahid Afridi, who is playing for Pakistan in the one-day series against Australia. That means the big-hitting Kieron Pollard, who attracted the top price of US$750,000 in the latest IPL auction, is their only overseas weapon, increasing the pressure on the locals.South Australia squad Graham Manou (capt, wk), Daniel Harris, Tom Cooper, Mark Cosgrove, Cameron Borgas, Dan Christian, Aaron O’Brien, Kieron Pollard, Jake Haberfield, Gary Putland, Mark Cleary, Shaun Tait.Victoria have been forced into a severe reshuffle following the return to New Zealand of Ross Taylor, who made 4 on Tuesday, and the elevation of Cameron White and Clint McKay to Australian duties. That defeat came when they were dismissed for 111 two weeks ago, allowing a 91-run win for the Redbacks Aiden Blizzard and Rob Quiney have been at their best in previous finals, with Blizzard blasting 47 off 20 balls in the 2007-08 win and Quiney launching 91 off 56 in last summer’s defeat Each state has two players in the top 10 run-makers for the tournament. Brad Hodge is third with 172 and Aaron Finch eighth on 142, while Kieron Pollard (146) and Daniel Harris (143) are South Australia’s representativesQuotes”They embarrassed us last time in Adelaide, so you’ll see a Victorian team very determined to turn the tide. West Ham: Hammers open talks for Lucas Digne

West Ham have opened talks with Everton regarding a move for left-back Lucas Digne, according to The Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Moyes after a left-back

David Moyes has been without first-choice left-back Aaron Cresswell for the club’s last seven Premier League games due to injury.

As a result, the Hammers are keen to bolster their left-back ranks, with head of recruitment Rob Newman also after a centre-back and a forward during the January transfer window.

Digne, labelled as ‘quality’ by pundit Paddy Kenny, appears to be a player surplus to requirements at Goodison Park following a reported disagreement with Rafa Benitez.

The Toffees have since brought in Vitaliy Mykolenko, and it seems as if West Ham are keen to take advantage of Digne’s situation.

The Latest: West Ham discussions

The Daily Mail shared a story late on Wednesday evening, claiming the Hammers have begun talks with Everton for the French full-back.

Chelsea and Newcastle have also been name-checked with an interest, but it appears as if it’s Newman and West Ham who are making moves.

The Verdict: A gamble?

It may well be a one-off with Benítez, but it could be a gamble bringing a player to the club who has had previous when it comes to disagreements with managers.

Moyes is reportedly being cautious when it comes to winter window additions, so he may well have some worries when it comes to Digne following the recent fall out on Merseyside with a well-known and respected coach.

Everton also want around £30m, meaning he could be the club’s fourth-biggest signing of all time, so you could argue a move for the 28-year-old may be a risk.

Perhaps a younger target who can eventually succeed Cresswell full-time would be more fitting.

SA look to dent India's home record

A series win in India is a big box any team other than India needs to tick if it wants to be the best in the world

The Preview by Sidharth Monga13-Feb-2010Match factsFebruary 14-18, 2010
Start time 0915 (0345 GMT)Big pictureVVS Laxman’s return means plenty to India•AFP

This is not merely about the ICC rankings. A series win in India is a big box any team other than India needs to tick if it wants to be the best in the world. Think Australia in their modern heyday and the frustration and the eventual satisfaction the “Final Frontier” brought them. India, on the other hand, pride themselves on their home record, and their claims to being the best will take a big beating if they lose.A hurriedly planned series plays into South Africa’s hands: they have to protect their lead for only one match. In 2008, before they beat both England and Australia in away series, South Africa were in a similar situation – a draw short of a series win in India. Then they failed at one of the more difficult tasks in Test cricket: beating India on a raging turner in India. When South Africans talk of that Kanpur loss now they don’t complain about the surface, but what they say has that “Final Frontier missed” ring to it.Less than two years later, Kolkata is not quite the raging turner. Kolkata is not quite the Final Frontier either: South Africa’s last two series have been a loss and a draw at home to Australia and England respectively. Yet this could mark the start of South Africa’s return towards the top a fortnight after turmoil hit them through the sacking of their coach and selection committee. The No. 1 ranking, should they win or draw, will be a bonus. Between that and now stands a hurt Indian side that will give it its all to protect that proud record at home. Not for no reason do India hold that proud record at home. South Africa know that. Only seriously good teams can win series in India, injury-hit or not. Of late this Indian side’s immediate response to a Test loss has been a resounding win. After Sydney came Perth, and after Colombo came Galle. After Nagpur, what?Form guide (last 5 completed matches, most recent first)India LWWWW

Watch out forNothing calms the Indian dressing room like VVS Laxman does. No one handles crisis like Laxman does. India are in right trouble, and Laxman usually delivers at such times.Dale Steyn is on a roll. Bowling fast, accurate, and swinging it both ways. He has got the ideal support from Morne Morkel and Paul Harris. He knows his job is not done yet.Gautam Gambhir is not known for going easy on himself. He may have scored five centuries in consecutive matches, and 11 fifty-or-above scores in consecutive matches, but his failure in the Nagpur loss will hurt him more than the preceding success pleased him. And once again, he will be facing Steyn and Morkel at their freshest.Graeme Smith has announced via Twitter that he is ready to play, despite a fracture in one joint of the small finger on the left hand. “It really is about dealing with pain…” he said in the pre-match press conference. Don’t worry about him, though. If he can hold the bat, he will be there. The sight of Smith, still in batting gear, mobbed by his mates, looking the biggest, the most imposing of them all, after the Edgbaston win that finally brought them a series win in England, is still fresh in memory. He won’t pass up a chance of similar heroics. Not if he can hold that bat.Team newsLaxman will be back, but he might not bat at No. 3, as is being implored by many, the former coach John Wright included. The idea is to split up the two inexperienced batsmen in the middle order and have them bat at Nos 3 and 6, as opposed to 5 and 6. Amit Mishra is a doubtful starter with the ball after his wicketless sojourn in Nagpur. There are two scenarios that can see him out: Pragyan Ojha coming back or India playing three seamers on a pitch that has some grass, an eventuality MS Dhoni didn’t rule out. Sreesanth should come back in any scenario after Ishant Sharma went wicketless in the first Test. India could also fiddle with the idea of getting a left-hand batsman, Suresh Raina, in to break Harris’ leg-stump line to the right-hand batsmen.India: (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 M Vijay, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 S Badrinath, 7 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 8, Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Amit Mishra/Pragyan Ojha/Ishant Sharma, 11 Sreesanth.South Africa will like to go in with the same XI, but it all depends on how painful Smith’s finger fracture is. Should Smith be ruled out, Alviro Petersen is the back-up opener. It doesn’t help that Mark Boucher is still not 100% with his back. He passed the gloves to AB de Villiers midway into the training session on match eve and did some low-back exercises.South Africa: (probable) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Ashwell Prince, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Paul Harris, 9 Wayne Parnell, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Morne Morkel.Pitch and conditionsEver since it became obvious India were losing in Nagpur, speculation was rife that another underprepared track might come to India’s rescue in the decider. Not this time. “There is a bit of grass on the wicket so I think the seamers will get a bit of help,” MS Dhoni said of the pitch. “It looks quite hard… I don’t see much turn happening on the first two days.”Because the Eden Gardens is being redone, the atmosphere won’t quite be the same. Forget 90,000, they will struggle to get 45,000 in. “There is no stands on one side of the ground so you can see a bit of breeze going across the field so there will be a bit of help for the seamers,” Dhoni said.Stats and triviaVirender Sehwag’s 109 in Nagpur was only his fifth score between 100 and 150 – out of 18 centuries.Among bowlers with a minimum of 100 Test wickets, Steyn’s strike-rate of 38.7 is the second-best, behind only George Lohmann who took 112 wickets at 34.1. Steyn is also just five short of becoming only the fifth South African to have taken 200 wickets.Laxman and Harbhajan Singh are the big Eden Gardens players. Laxman’s average at the Eden Gardens is 81.63 as opposed to a career average of 45.70/ Corresponding figures for Harbhajan are 23.1 and 31.3Quotes”I know players have been saying that the rankings are really not at the forefront of our minds, and it’s the truth. For me, to look back and know that you have won a Test series in India, that is a terrific achievement. If you look back at some of the things you have achieved as a team, those are the sort of things to have memories of.”
“It is challenges that make our life interesting. We are looking forward to coming back in the series and doing well, but if it was so easy it would not be called international cricket. We are expecting from the players who are part of the side right now to try to level the series.”

Tamim rues another missed chance

Tamim Iqbal rated his blistering 125 from 120 balls in the first ODI against England at Mirpur as “one of his best” performances

Tamim Iqbal rated his blistering 125 from 120 balls in the first ODI against England at Mirpur as “one of his best” performances, but admitted that his personal satisfaction had been tempered by his team’s familiar failure to make the most of their opportunity. After nine overs of the contest, having been asked to bat first, Bangladesh had rattled along to 63 for 0, with Tamim hurtling towards a 32-ball half-century. But a spate of cheap dismissals undermined their momentum, and Naeem Islam’s late 25 was the next highest score as they were eventually restricted to 228 with 4.2 overs unused.”We were going beautifully at the start, but we just kept losing wickets, and the guys who are in form, like Shakib [Al Hasan], Junaid [Siddique] and Mushfiq [Rahim] didn’t make the big scores,” said Tamim. “That was the main turning point. We really trust our team and we have been working really hard. I hope the mistakes we made in this game will not be repeated in the next.”Tamim came into the contest with a reputation to uphold, having starred for Bangladesh in both the Test and ODI arena in recent months. He produced a matchwinning 128 in the second innings at Kingstown in July, to set up a famous maiden overseas victory over West Indies, before shocking India with a blazing 151 in last month’s second Test. But this was arguably his most commanding 50-over performance since his precocious 51 against India in the 2007 World Cup.”I got two ODI hundreds before this one,” he said. “One was against Ireland, the other against Zimbabwe. So to get a century against England, a proper Test nation, really feels good. But I think the best is yet to come. I am enjoying playing international cricket, I feel I have learned a lot of things from this innings, and that will help me for the future.”I’m happy with my performance but it would have been better if we’d won the game,” he added. “We started very well, but we made mistakes at crucial times, so we need to see that that doesn’t happen in the next game. England is a very good side, very strong at batting and bowling, so we have to put our 100% effort and play our best cricket to beat them. I hope in the second or third ODI, we play the better cricket and win.”Although Tamim’s reputation is as a formidable hitter, he has already shown a game-brain that sets him apart from his peers, and that was on display once again in this contest, as he reined himself in as the wickets started to tumble, and set himself to bat for as long as he could. In the end he lasted until the 43rd over of the innings, before walking across his stumps in a bid to beat fine leg, with only Nos. 10 and 11 for company.”Cricket is not about an individual game, it is a team game,” said Tamim. “So I need to follow the team rules also. When two wickets fell in quick succession I needed to put down my own game, and play according to the ball. That’s what the plan is for Bangladesh cricket. We are working really hard on our game, and the way we are going and training, I hope in one or two years we will be a very tough opponent to beat.”That prospect is not entirely out of the question. Tamim himself turns 21 on March 20, and the core of the team is still in its international infancy, including the captain Shakib, who is a few days’ shy of 23. “We are a young side, and an improving side,” said Tamim. “If you count our average age, it is not more than 24. We have lots of cricket left in ourselves, and lots of years to play. The major obstacle to Bangladesh’s progress will be an exhaustion of patience, both domestically and internationally, but Tamim believes they are headed in the right direction. “The crowd always wants us to win, so it’s tough because we always disappoint them,” he said. “We know that, we know that very well, but we trust in our ability that we will achieve that thing that they want.”Alastair Cook, taking charge of England for the first time in a 50-over match, was both relieved and satisfied at the end of a tough contest, his contentment heightened by the fact that he had overcome a spirited challenge to record that all-important first victory.”We know you have to take advantage of those first 10 overs as a batting side,” said Cook. “That was the first time I’ve seen [Tamim] and he struck it really well. We’ll need to have a look at him over the next 24 hours, and come up with plans that are better executed, but you can’t take it away from how he played. We bowled some good balls at him and he hit them well. I was impressed how cleanly he hit them.”
