– Voltei bem, me sentindo bem.

Sunderland must start Tom Flanagan v Oldham

After managing to secure all three points in their previous League One game against Cambridge United, Sunderland are back in Papa John’s Trophy action on Wednesday with a clash against Oldham Athletic.

In terms of who Lee Johnson could select in his starting XI in midweek, it seems as though the Black Cats are in the midst of an injury crisis at the moment, particularly with a number of defensive players ruled out of action.

With this in mind, one defensive figure that Johnson will be able to rely upon and who should be in the starting XI to take on Oldham is  Tom Flanagan, who is currently earning £3.6k-per-week according to Salary Sport.

Time to unleash Tom Flanagan

After being named as an unused substitute in Sunderland’s league games against Ipswich and Shrewsbury, the centre-back played the full 90 minutes in their recent 2-1 win at Cambridge.

In that game, the 30-year-old proved to Johnson how useful he can be for the team by racking up seven clearances, three tackles and two interceptions, with one shot blocked and six of his eight duels won.

Praised in the past by Michael O’Neill for being a “leader” for Northern Ireland, this latest performance for Sunderland earned the defender a solid overall match rating of 7.4/10, making him the joint-highest rated player on the day according to SofaScore.

With this in mind, it would make sense for Flanagan to keep his place in the team to take on Oldham and give the Black Cats the best chance of overcoming the League Two side and getting into the next stage of the competition.

However, if Johnson thinks it would be better to keep the 30-year-old fresh for their next league outing against Oxford United at the weekend, perhaps he could sit out their midweek fixture and hope that the team can cope without him against a Latics side who are currently battling relegation in League Two.

Either way, with their current injury issues, it’s safe to say that Flanagan could act as a catalyst to keep Sunderland strong at the back for the remainder of the season, which is what they’ll need if they are to have any chance of getting promoted to the Championship.

Australia reach semis after thriller

Pakistan’s bowlers were magnificent in their defence of a modest total, but could not deny Australia a thrilling last-ball victory that ensured their progression to a fourth consecutive Champions Trophy semi-final

Pakistan’s bowlers were magnificent in their defence of a modest total, but could not deny Australia a thrilling last-ball victory that ensured their progression to a fourth consecutive Champions Trophy semi-final. The Australians were at one stage coasting at 140 for 2 in pursuit of Pakistan’s target of 206, only to lose six wickets for 47 in a dizzying 12-over sequence that temporarily opened the door for India to leap-frog them into the next round of the tournament. In the end, Brett Lee and Nathan Hauritz guided Australia to a two-wicket win that secured them a rematch with England, and made a dead-rubber of India’s match against the West Indies down the road at the Wanderers. It was anything but convincing though. Mohammad Asif, playing his first international in 18 months, claimed two wickets in an excellent second spell to draw Pakistan back into the contest, and Saeed Ajmal continued to mesmerise the Australians with 2 for 31 from 10 superb overs. Adding to the intrigue was Naved-ul-Hasan, who at one stage conceded a solitary run from three overs at the death, turning Australia’s comfortable stroll into a nerve-shredding climb.Australia entered the final over requiring five runs for victory, and Umar Gul gave them a torrid time. Bowling full, straight and with a hint of movement, Gul forced the Australians to edge and scamper for their runs, with victory eventually coming from a frantically-run bye from the last delivery of the match. Lee, who had played an instrumental role in restricting Pakistan’s batsmen earlier in the day, finished with an unbeaten 12, highlighted by a dancing drive to an Ajmal doosra in the 48th over that broke Australia out of their funk.Shane Watson and Tim Paine seemed set to make short work of Pakistan’s total, frequently hitting and clearing the boundary to kick-start the Australian innings. Watson cast aside memories of his recent run of ducks by blasting 10 runs from Umar Gul’s opening over, and Paine followed with a neatly clipped six over midwicket from Mohammad Asif, who bowled without venom on his return to international cricket.Neither opener made it through the first 12 overs – Watson edged a quicker Gul delivery to Akmal, while Paine was trapped leg-before by Afridi – but Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey ensured there would be no top-order capitulation with an 81-run third-wicket stand. Ponting contributed a stoic 32 from 64 deliveries, and Hussey a more energetic 64 from 87 as Australia eyed an early shower.Their dismissals, however, triggered a collapse that evoked painful Ashes memories in several members of the squad. Callum Ferguson, Cameron White, James Hopes and Mitchell Johnson were all dismissed for single-digit scores as Pakistan roared back into the contest on a difficult Centurion pitch. But their resurgence fell just short, allowing Australia safe passage through to the semi-finals.Earlier, Mitchell Johnson claimed his 100th ODI scalp, but run-restriction rather than wicket-taking proved the key to Australia’s strong bowling performance. Pakistan’s batsmen laboured through the middle stages of their innings and batted with little urgency with wickets in hand at the death, leaving Australia a modest run-chase on a flattening wicket.Mohammad Yousuf (45 off 69) and Kamran Akmal (44 off 63) were the most prolific of the Pakistan batsmen, however neither mastered the conditions nor the bowlers. Misbah-ul-Haq looked more assured during his knock of 41 from 53 deliveries, but his dismissal – stepping on his stumps to a Watson wide in the final over – summed up a Pakistan innings that faltered out of the blocks.

Newcastle tipped to move for Dele Alli

A Newcastle United transfer claim has been made, regarding Tottenham attacking midfielder Dele Alli…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has claimed that the Magpies will be chasing a deal to sign the England international in the January transfer window, although he is unsure as to whether or not Spurs will be willing to play ball.

He told GIVEMESPORT:

“Newcastle, I’m sure, will be after him. I don’t know whether Daniel Levy will be too keen to deal with Newcastle, but that’s another story. We don’t know.”

Excitement

This claim from Bridge will surely excite Newcastle fans as it suggests that PIF are set to make a move for Alli next month to bolster the squad.

The midfielder has only started six Premier League games this season, after starting seven last term, and has fallen out of favour at White Hart Lane. This could open the door for the Magpies to swoop and attempt to unearth the gem who has lost his way of late.

In his first three top-flight seasons for Spurs, Alli produced 37 goals and 29 assists – averaging 12 goals and ten assists per campaign, excluding cup competitions. This shows that the ability is there and he has the capabilities to be a top-quality player at this level by regularly scoring and creating goals.

Earlier this year, his teammate Eric Dier hailed his ‘unnoticed’ qualities by citing his work rate off the ball, saying:

“Everyone knows his qualities, but I think he also has a lot of qualities which go unnoticed. The amount of second balls he wins, the amount he runs for the team and presses.

“He’s always attached to the game, it’s like he’s on a string to the ball. He is always attached to the game in every moment and that’s a great quality to have.”

This shows that he has the work rate and pressing nous to go along with his goalscoring and creativity, albeit he has been unable to merge all of his qualities together in recent years. Eddie Howe could enjoy working with him on the training pitch to get him back to his best, with his previous statistics showing that all the raw materials are there to be extracted.

Newcastle supporters will, therefore, be excited at the prospect of the £100k-per-week magician arriving at St. James’ Park as he has the potential to be a huge player for them in the Premier League.

He has shown the level of impact he can have in the final third at this level and fans will surely be buzzing to see a player with his quality be given the chance to shine by Howe in the second-half of the season. This is why this is an exciting update from Bridge for Magpies supporters.

Mature Shahid Afridi eyes Twenty20 defence

Rejuvinated by his recent limited-overs form, Shahid Afridi has set his sights on helping Pakistan retain their World Twenty20 title

Rejuvinated by his recent limited-overs form, Shahid Afridi has set his sights on helping Pakistan retain their World Twenty20 title in the third edition of the tournament, to be held in the Caribbean next April. Afridi was named Twenty20 captain after Younis Khan retired from the format after leading Pakistan to the World Twenty20 title in June and has continued to excel as a match-winning allrounder.Afridi was instrumental in this summer’s triumph, turning in Man-of-the-Match performances in both the semi-final and the final. “I am becoming more and more responsible with my batting,” Afridi told . “I want to help my team win the World Twenty20 again next year and then the bigger prize in the World Cup in two years time.”Being the captain I have to do planning for the World Twenty20 because I want to win it once again, for my team, for my country and for my people who get inspired with our wins. There is no cricket back home so it is important that we keep winning and motivate the youth to take up the game which will keep the interest alive in our country.”The last five years have been the most productive of Afridi’s career, where despite brief patches of indifference, he has established himself as a fixture in Pakistan’s limited-overs set-up. His form has been particularly good this year, with impressive performances in the ODI series and Twenty20 against Australia in Dubai in May, his critical role in leading Pakistan to the World Twenty20 title, and now in the first ODI against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi.”I know all my fans want to see my explosive hitting, but I am more of a bowling allrounder and want to be remembered for that,” said Afridi.Pakistan are due to tour Australia for three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 between December 26 and February 5. Afridi has decided to not play Test cricket in an attempt to give his best in limited-overs cricket. He recently turned down an offer to represent Tasmania because he wanted to focus on his team’s forthcoming tour of Australia.
