وضمن سموحة وفاركو البقاء في الدوري الممتاز، بعد أن نجح الأول في حصد 47 نقطة احتل بها المركز السابع، فيما وصل فاركو للنقطة 42 بالمركز الثامن.

When Jordan Pickford pulls on the England jersey he becomes arguably one of the best goalkeepers in world football, as the undisputed number one, but the same can’t be said when he pulls on his Everton shirt week in, week out.

Pickford has steered England to a semi-final of a World Cup and the final of Euro 2020, with his most famous work being his world-class performance in the penalty shoot against Colombia in 2018.

With so many notable clean sheets and famous saves for his international side, it’s a wonder why he shows inconsistency in his Everton performances.

No goalkeeper in the Premier League has made more errors leading to goals since he joined Everton in 2017, with 11 errors to his name for Everton alone, and 15 including his time at Sunderland. For England, though, the ‘keeper has zero.

There are many reasons why Jordan Pickford could be picking up errors for his club side, including a lack of confidence in his defensive line ahead of him.

Everton are well known for their constant rearrangement of their centre back pairings with nine different options selected. Meanwhile, Seamus Coleman and Mason Holgate are the only defenders to have been with Pickford at Everton since he joined four seasons ago.

For the Three Lions, the 27-year-old is much more likely to feel comfortable in his role as a sweeper-keeper as he is surrounded by ball-playing defenders who command the ball with more confidence.

There is nothing but praise from voices in football when it comes to Pickford’s international performances, and the debate surrounding the keeper always comes back to his incredible form for England.

Ex-England international, Theo Walcott, praised the £22.5m rated keeper for his mentality, telling talkSPORT;

“It’s all about clean sheets in tournament football.

“I’ve been really pleased with Jordan and he had a lot of people on his back about being too involved in the game.

“When you’ve got a goalkeeper behind you like that, it helps.

“Jordan has always been a resilient young man and dealt with pressures and I’m sure now he’s grown his hair a little bit more he’s probably not hearing as much.”

If Rafa Benitez can develop and establish a much more consistent and reliable defensive style to emulate that of the England set-up, he could extract much more from Pickford as their Premier League campaign continues and consequently, save their dodgy run of form.

Crystal Palace have received a potentially significant injury boost ahead of their Premier League encounter with Aston Villa at Selhurst Park this afternoon.

In Friday’s press conference, Patrick Vieira revealed that midfielder Eberechi Eze has had a good week after returning to full training with the first-team squad, while Nathan Ferguson is also making good progress.

“Everybody trained this morning,” said the Frenchman. “Eze had a really good week, full session with the team. Nathan took part in some training this week, so everybody outside of Macca (James McArthur) are fit for the game.”

Vieira then went into more detail on McArthur, who picked up a hamstring tear a couple of weeks ago, providing another positive update.

“We don’t have a timeframe on the injury,” he revealed. “What we decided to do with the doctor is evaluate every week the progress he is making, and things are moving well. Obviously, it is still too early to start training with the first team.”

Patrick Vieira will be buzzing

The news that Eze has had another full week of training under his belt will leave Vieira buzzing with excitement, given the player’s importance to the team.

The highly-rated 23-year-old returned to the bench against Burnley last time out after being sidelined with an Achilles injury since May.

Last season, Eze established himself as a key player for the Eagles, scoring four goals and providing a further six assists in 34 top-flight fixtures and achieving the squad’s fifth-highest performance rating from WhoScored.

Since then, Palace have transformed their setup, replacing former manager Roy Hodgson with Vieira, who has overseen several exciting acquisitions.

The prospect of Eze lining up alongside the likes of summer signings Odsonne Edouard, Conor Gallagher and Michael Olise is a mouth-watering one, and it could occur for the first time against Villa today.

An update has emerged on Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas, regarding his future at Parkhead…

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic’s Kieran Devlin, the Hoops are poised to cash in on the shot-stopper in January as they plan a future with Tobi Oluwayemi, who recently made the bench.

The report claims the club want to sell Barkas on a permanent deal, but are open to allowing him to leave on loan if all else fails.

Fans will love it

Celtic fans will surely love this update on Barkas’ future as he is now the fourth choice goalkeeper at the club and thus, Ange Postecoglou could save thousands by axing him from the squad in January. He is behind Joe Hart, Scott Bain – who have both played in the Premiership this season –  and now Oluwayemi.

The £9k-per-week dud is seemingly at the club only to train and pick up a wage at the end of the month, which fans will not be best pleased with as he is not making any positive contributions on the pitch.

Paul Robinson previously blasted the Greek international and said that he ‘wasn’t good enough’ for the Hoops last season. He told Football Insider:

“Barkas had a really poor season last year.

“A mistake like that last night and the criticism that has followed, it is going to be difficult for him again. He is already on the back foot going into the season. Barkas wasn’t good enough last year and Bain wasn’t good enough last year. They have not replaced Fraser Forster.

“If they have any chance of winning the title next year they need a new goalkeeper. You need a top goalkeeper to play in big games.”

This was before the signing of Hart, whilst Postecoglou’s unwillingness to utilise Barkas this season suggests that he agrees with Robinson’s assessment. His poor form is also another reason, along with the money his sale would save, the fans will be delighted to read that the club want to sell the 26-year-old.

It is now down to Celtic and Postecoglou to ensure that they can find a buyer for Barkas. His lack of match action could make it difficult to find a team willing to commit to a permanent deal, which could see a loan arrangement being a viable outcome.

Either way, supporters will be incredibly pleased to finally see his error-stricken spell at Parkhead come to a close.

Tata Sports Club got off to a winning start in the Corporate Cup thanks to an ICL-returnee, Rohan Gavaskar, who struck 93 against All India Public Sector Sports Promotion Board (AIPSSPB) in Dharamsala. Rain had reduced the game to 36 overs a side and Tata, after being sent in, managed 241 for 8. Gavaskar took control after the loss of two early wickets, smashing seven fours and three sixes in his knock, which came at less than a run a ball. Ajit Agarkar’s breezy cameo of 43 off 34 balls towards the end pushed the score towards a match-winning one. Agarkar, the captain, was back in business early with the ball when he clean bowled Nilesh Patwardhan and Rajinder Bisht in successive overs. Paras Dogra was the next to go, excellently caught at third man by Tushar Garat, who covered a lot of ground to get underneath the ball. The early loss of wickets didn’t help the run rate, as AIPSSPB managed only two an over after ten. Pankaj Thakur delayed the inevitable by helping himself to a half-century, as his team ended on 168.In another rain-interrupted game, in Visakhapatnam, Madras Rubber Factory (MRF) beat Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) by 12 runs. MRF opted to bat but were bowled out within 50 overs for 191. Gnaneswara Rao top scored with 53 off 74 balls with four fours but the rest couldn’t carry on after making starts. The BPCL batsmen also struggled to get going, and were in trouble at one stage at 58 for 5. PK Dharma, the right-arm seamer, did the damage when he was introduced first change, picking up three wickets. Rain intervened with the score at 86 for 5 and the target was then revised to 185 in 46 overs by the VJD Method. There was another rain intervention when BPCL proceeded to 120 for 6 in 28.3 overs. However, no further play was possible and BPCL found themselves 12 short of the required score at that stage. Dharma was named the Man of the Match for his 3 for 22.The match between Air India Blue and Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of heavy overnight rain in Mohali. Despite the sun coming out in the afternoon, the groundstaff were unable to get the outfield ready, and the captains called off the game at 6pm. The match was originally supposed to be rescheduled to Friday but the organising committee of the tournament withdrew the decision to replay since no provision for reserve day had been made for any of the matches.
