No change in Ganguly's retirement plan

A 16th Test century in Mohali won’t change Sourav Ganguly’s plans to retire after the India-Australia Tests, he said on Saturday.

A 16th Test century in Mohali won’t change Sourav Ganguly’s plans to retire after the India-Australia Tests, he said on Saturday. Ganguly’s 102 helped India to a formidable 469 on the second day of the second Test, but the innings hasn’t forced a rethink for the former India captain.”I think it’s the right decision and I have no regrets,” Ganguly said. “I just don’t want to play any more, to be honest. I’ve been playing well for the last two years.Ganguly has had a consistent run since returning to the team in December 2006, but was dropped from the Rest of India squad – primarily consisting of Test regulars – after a poor series in Sri Lanka. Ganguly, however, found a place in the Test squad picked by a new set of selectors and surprised all by announcing his retirement before the first Test in Bangalore.”Except for the Sri Lanka series, I’ve had an outstanding two years,” he said. “But it’s just that I feel the time has come to go.”He said he was pleased with his effort in Mohali – Ganguly walked in at 163 for 4 and shared century stands with Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. “I’m just happy to get runs,” he said. “I still hopefully have five innings to go [before retirement]. I will try to do well and finish off well.”I’ve tried to enjoy every single day because every day will be the last,” he said. “I’m trying to do my best.”During his innings, Ganguly became the fourth Indian batsman to go past 7000 Test runs. Ganguly has 11,363 ODI runs at an average over 40 – similar to that in Tests – but he said it’s the performance in the five-day format that would be remembered in spite of the emergence of Twenty20.”You will be remembered in what you have done in Test matches. First Test matches, then one-day cricket,” he said. “When you talk about great players, you talk about a [Sunil] Gavaskar or [Steve] Waugh or Tendulkar or [Ricky] Ponting. It’s because of their performances in Test matches. Not what they do in Twenty20.”India began the series with question marks over the future of their senior players, but Ganguly felt performance, and not age, should be considered. “It’s going to be an individual decision for everyone. Age is no bar,” he said. “It’s the runs you get and people like [VVS] Laxman, Sachin and Rahul [Dravid] have been scoring runs. They should be judged on their performance.”

City fans blast finances in Haaland deal

Manchester City supporters have taken to Twitter to let their feelings known about a potential ‘bidding war’ for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland next summer.

The Premier League champions broke the British transfer record for an English player this summer for the services of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa, before missing out on the controversial signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, who went on to re-sign for rivals Manchester United.

Grealish has already opened his account for Pep Guardiola’s team, scoring in the 5-0 victory over Norwich City, and was handed only his third start for England in Thursday’s demolition job on Hungary.

But with club legend Sergio Aguero calling time on his time at the Etihad, City remain without a number traditional nine and have used Ferran Torres as a false nine in the opening three games of the season.

It has now emerged that City will compete with United next summer to bring Haaland to Manchester in a deal that could rise to $90million (£65m).

According to Sport1’s Martin Hoffman, [via City Xtra on Twitter], both sides are expected to enter a ‘bidding war’ with each other, with the striker’s agent setting wage demands at a remarkable $50million (£36m) gross plus $40million (£29m) in agent fees.

Vaughan to join Performance squad in India

Michael Vaughan, the former England batsman and captain, will travel with the England Performance Programme squad in India this month in a bid to be considered for the Ashes next year

Cricinfo staff11-Nov-2008Michael Vaughan, the former England batsman and captain, will travel with the England Performance Programme squad in India this month in a bid to be considered for the Ashes next year.Vaughan has held talks with Geoff Miller, the head of selectors, and will fly out to India on November 21. Crucially, the Performance squad will then link up with England for training on December 17. It will be Vaughan’s first involvement with England under the new regime of Kevin Pietersen.Vaughan stepped down as England captain in the summer and had intimated that he needed a break from the game, but has never hid his ambitions to return to Test cricket as a batsman, particularly for the Ashes next year. He missed out on selection with the full England squad to India because “his place in the Test squad cannot be justified based on recent form”. His brief visit to India with the Performance Programme represents a crucial opportunity for him to prove that he has the desire to return as a fully-fledged Test batsman. The Performance Programme squad are due to play a three-day game in Bangalore on November 30 before a four-day match in Mumbai.

Embleton stole the show for SAFC in August

Lee Johnson could not have asked for much of a better start to the 2021/22 campaign. The Black Cats ended the fifth matchday top of the League One table with 12 points, winning four of their first five games.

The Black Cats came out on top against Wigan, AFC Wimbledon, MK Dons and Wycombe, with their solitary defeat in August coming away to Burton Albion.

Many plaudits will rightly go to Scottish striker Ross Stewart as he found the back of the net four times in five matches. However, one player who perhaps stole the show from the big Scot is Elliot Embleton.

The Sunderland academy product, who was on loan at Blackpool last season, has made the number 10 position his own and kept summer signing Alex Pritchard out of the team with his terrific performances in August.

He averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.22 across his five starts in League One, scoring two goals and creating another two for his teammates. His excellent displays in midfield have helped string together some superb team performances from the Black Cats.

In terms of his finishing, Embleton has been fairly efficient in front of goal. The midfielder has scored two goals from eight shots and missed one big chance, compared to Stewart’s four goals from 15 shots and two big chances missed this season. This shows that he could have the potential to end the campaign with a respectable, potentially double-figure return in the goals column.

However, it was creatively where Embleton displayed his best qualities. As per SofaScore, he created 11 chances in five games (2.2 per match) and set up one key opening, highlighting the quality of his passes in the final third. This resulted in him picking up two assists, with the midfielder ending the month with four direct goal involvements in five matches.

This shows that the 22-year-old was key to much of what Sunderland did in attack during August as he was at the heart of the action in terms of scoring and creating goals for Johnson’s side. This is why he perhaps stole the show from Stewart, as he coupled scoring with creativity, something the Scot was unable to do with zero assists.

It is now up to Embleton to show that he can be consistent over a longer period of time, but for now we can appreciate the excellence he displayed during August.

Gujarat kick off season with emphatic win

Siddharth Trivedi took seven wickets in the match to give Gujarat an innings win © Cricinfo Ltd
Rakesh Dhurv delayed it with 11 fours in an unbeaten 52, but Gujarat finally sealed a thumping innings-and-227-run win over Saurashtra. At 74 for 5 in the second innings, trailing by 354 runs, Saurashtra needed a batting effort far different from what they managed on the previous two days.It was nearly eight overs when Siddharth Trivedi struck the first blow, removing Sandip Maniar for 3 – the team score was 95. Pratik Mehta and opener Kanaiya Vaghela added 32 in 15.3 overs. Mehta was bowled by Ashraf Makda for 28, and Trivedi got Vaghela soon after. Vaghela’s 36 came off 188 balls, lasting nearly four-and-a-half hours at the crease. Mohnish Parmar removed Sandeep Jobanputra, but Gujarat were frustrated by the last-wicket pair of Dhurv and debutant Jayesh Odedra, who played out 66 deliveries for his 10. Amit Singh’s lone wicket of the innings ended the match. The win gave Gujarat six points, an emphatic way for the promoted team to kick off the season.

Tamil Nadu chose to enforce the follow-on after left-arm spinner C Suresh took career-best figures of 5 for 122 to bowl out Maharashtra for 457 in reply to the visitors’ 648. But on a flat Nasik pitch they could not repeat the effort a second time and had to be content with the three points from the first-innings lead. Suresh added two wickets to his three yesterday as the Maharashtra lower order managed only 56 more before being bowled out. Then Kedar Jadhav and Nikhil Paradkar frustrated their attempts with a 164-run stand after the first three wickets fell for 55. First-innings centurion Ameya Shrikhande was caught and bowled for 28 but Jadhav, who scored a half-century yesterday, batted for fours hours for his 95. He played cautiously after Paradkar was dismissed for a well-made 92, falling less than three overs before stumps.
Scorecard
Hyderabad batted out the final day as their match against Orissa ended in an expected draw in Cuttack. Having bowled out Orissa for 269 and gained points from a first-innings lead on day three, Hyderabad chose to get some batting practice today.Debutant D Rushi Raj made up for his first-innings 15 to score a patient fifty, while Anoop Pai got his second half-century of the match. Ravi Teja and Arjun Yadav also chipped in with useful scores as the Orissa bowlers toiled for 76 overs for their wickets. Debasis Mohanty got five wickets for the match while Preetamjit Das took four.
Scorecard
The only delight for Andhra in their draw with Uttar Pradesh was legspinner M Suresh’s career-best figures of 5 for 80. UP had gained a first-innings lead by then and Andhra had to be satisfied by bowling them out and then batting out the remaining 45 overs to get one point from the match.Centuries from Mohammad Kaif and Tanmay Srivastava overnight left the hosts needing five runs to get the three points for the first-innings lead. Medium-pacer Israel Raju triggered the collapse by removing Piyush Chawla off the first ball the day. But the points had been gained by the time Suresh took his first wicket – having Ravikant Shukla caught by Raju. He wrapped up the tail soon enough, taking the last three wickets in successive overs. Andhra openers Hemal Watekar (65) and Prasad Reddy added 128 together before Watekar was bowled an over before stumps.
Scorecard
An anti-climax draw followed after fifteen wickets fell in the day and Railways were a target of 104 to be chased in nine overs. Yere Goud’s unbeaten 122 gave Railways a first-innings lead of 24 after which debutant medium-pacer Anureet Singh took 6 for 49 to bowl out Karnataka for 127.Goud, who had reached his century yesterday, was aided by tail-enders Murali Kartik (11) and Harvinder Singh (22) in getting Railways the lead. Then Sanjib Sanyal removed the Karnataka openers with 46 on the board. Anureet made his appearance soon after, bowling G Satish for 19. He took two wickets in two overs – removing Thilak Naidu and first-innings centurion Robin Uthappa for ducks. Sanyal and Karan Sharma took two wickets each. It was unlikely that Railways would have tried to chase the target considering they needed nearly 12 an over. But their innings was also not short of drama – they lost their openers in the first two overs with only six on the board. Raja Ali and Sanjay Bangar batted out two more overs before the teams decided to call it a draw.
Scorecard
Legspinner Chetanya Nanda joined the list of half-centurions in Delhi’s first innings and prolonged the Punjab bowlers’ misery in the draw at the Roshnara Club Ground in Delhi. He was the sixth batsman to get a half-century in the innings as Delhi extended their first-innings lead to 128. Gagandeep Singh dismissed him for 56 to end the innings and get 3 for 97. Nanda then took two wickets , including Yuvraj Singh for 38, as Punjab batted out the 49 overs remaining in the day.
ScorecardMumbai scored a convincing 237-run victory against Rajasthan to start their campaign on an ominous note. Rajasthan’s top order had crumbled meekly on the previous evening and there wasn’t much resistance from the rest as they crumbled to 171. Dhawal Kulkarni took four wickets in the second innings to finish one short of becoming the second Mumbai bowler (after Suru Nayak) to take ten wickets on debut. Read the full report here.
