An independent security expert, acting on behalf of three cricket boards, says some “fine tuning” is needed in certain areas before Pakistan is ready to host the ICC Champions Trophy in September this year, but feels it is “going in the right direction.”Reg Dickson, an Australian security consultant hired by Cricket Australia, the ECB and New Zealand Cricket, visited Karachi’s National Stadium during Saturday’s Asia Cup match between Bangladesh and India to assess the venue’s security set-up.”It’s been an enlightening two to three hours. I met with Zakir Khan and some independent security consultants who have been very helpful,” Dickson told reporters at the stadium. “It’s a reasonable start. Some fine tuning needs to be done and everyone acknowledges that. But in time the security situation will be enhanced.”With the Asia Cup entering its final stages, as many eyes are on the security arrangements in place for the tournament as they are on the cricket. The Pakistan board has acknowledged that the Asia Cup is a dress rehearsal for the Champions Trophy.Though the tournament is two months away, doubts have already been expressed by a number of players and teams over whether they would be comfortable playing in Pakistan. Australia, one of the countries with reservations, pulled out of a tour to Pakistan earlier this year on security grounds, though analysts acknowledge that the situation has improved since.Dickson will only visit Karachi on this trip and is expected to submit a report to the three boards in two weeks’ time. “I will be having more meetings. The tournament is still 2-3 months away.”Dickson, however, sounded cautiously optimistic about the chances of the tournament going ahead here. “I think everybody would like to play here and it is why PCB and others have put in so much work here. It’s an educational tour for me and it’s still a work in progress.”We start off at a base. There is lots of security experience in this country plus international experience being brought in. Together we can see it going in the right direction.”

Rangers fans slam SPFL letter

Many Glasgow Rangers fans were far from happy with a letter sent out by SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan as the club’s stand-off with Cinch continues.

The Gers’ Premiership title defence has been mixed so far. They kicked off with a 3-0 victory over Livingston but they were then defeated by Dundee United 1-0, a result which brought an end to their 40-game unbeaten run in the top flight (Sky Sports).

In both of those matches, the Gers refused to feature the SPFL’s title sponsor Cinch either on their matchday shirts or, in the case of the Livingston game, on the advertising boards around the side of the pitch at Ibrox, as they believe there are gaps in the contract (The Daily Record). MacLennan has now written to the other 41 league clubs to explain the stand-off, and has revealed that the SPFL have asked the SFA to step in.

The letter in question was shared on Twitter by @Beatthatbeat, and it attracted plenty of attention from Gers supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about the letter

““If you would like to discuss these issues please don’t hesitate to call me”….. I have two opinions on that line 1. He doesn’t want a paper trail 2. We wouldn’t want any emails getting “lost” would we. Either way, shambles of an organisation. Utter shambles.”

“Appallingly worded letter! So petulant, to actually refuse to refer to Rangers in name: very small-minded! Then to repeatedly refer to “..your board..” is divisive, confrontational and escalatory. This shows all the parochial behaviour that led to such a bad deal being signed.”

Credit: @B0mberHarris

“The conflict issue was raised by Rangers and ignored by the SPFL who proceeded to sign the contract without doing any due diligence on the Rangers’ contract. No mention of ‘Rule 17’ (our get-out), or of the agency involved, who will take £500,00 from the Scottish game. Shambles.”

“SPFL never did due diligence on the cinch contract, as we know. Rangers have a conflicting contract. M Mc is trying, yet again to blame our club for his incompetence. He knows there’s political hatred for us out there, and is trying to divide and conquer.”

“Said it all along. As much I 100% back the club’s stance on this, why haven’t we dropped multiple copies of our evidence at the SPFL’s door & gave them the ultimate GIRUY. Not doing so has allowed them to call our bluff & makes us look weak again”

“I really hope our lawyers are on the ball with this 1.”

Celtic: Gabby Agbonlahor drops Ryan Christie verdict

TalkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has predicted that Ryan Christie will sign a new contract at Celtic, with question marks over his future continuing to circulate [Football Insider].

The Lowdown: Christie contract situation rumbles on into 2021/22 season

Facing a pivotal season in 2021/22 with automatic Champions League qualification on offer for the winners of the Scottish Premiership [BBC], Ange Postecoglou will be keen to ensure he secures the future of his best players in order to come out victorious in the title race.

One man who faces an uncertain next few months at the Hoops is 26-year-old Christie, who’s contract is due to expire in January 2022 [Transfermarkt].

Despite this, the Scotland international is reportedly open to signing a new contract at Celtic [The Scottish Sun].

The Latest: Agbonlahor believes it’s only a matter of time

Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, ex-pro turned pundit Agbonlahor was very optimistic on Celtic star Christie putting pen to paper on an extension, stating:  “They want him to stay and I think he will stay eventually.”

The former Villa man also added: “I think he’s just waiting for that big new deal. When he’s putting in performances like he did last weekend, I think it’s only a matter of time.

“It’s positive times for Celtic after recent results. Things might be starting to look a little bit on the up.

“With Rangers losing their last couple of games, it shows that if they get their act together they’ve got a good chance of making a much closer title race”.

The Verdict: Celtic should do everything in their power

Becoming a pivotal part of Postecoglou’s new-look Hoops outfit, Celtic will be doing everything they can to keep Christie in Glasgow beyond the expiration date on his current deal.

Adept in leading the press from the front as well as providing creativity and energy, Christie has rightfully attracted adulation for his performances in recent times, labelled as ‘outstanding’ by former Scotland manager Alex McLeish last year [Football Insider].

Starting off 2021/22 in striking fashion, the Inverness-born midfielder has registered four goal contributions from six appearances; one goal and three assists [Transfermarkt].

Furthermore, his rate of 4.5 key passes per game proves he is one of Celtic’s most influential players so far this campaign [WhoScored].

Celtic must look to tie Christie down to a new deal before it is too late.

Moores and Pietersen sort out issues

Peter Moores, England’s coach, has played down rumours of a rift between him and Kevin Pietersen, England’s new captain

Peter Moores, England’s coach, has played down rumours of a rift between him and Kevin Pietersen, England’s new captain. While admitting they had differences in the past, Moores said all was resolved during an hour-long meeting at a Northampton hotel on Sunday following Michael Vaughan’s resignation as captain after England’s defeat in the third Test at Edgbaston against South Africa.”Coaches and captains are always going to have different views because they look at the game from a different angle,” Moores said ahead of the fourth and final Test at The Oval. “But I’ve always found Kevin fine. What I like about him is that he’s got his views, which can be pretty forthright. One of the first things I wanted to do when we were going to offer him the captaincy was to sit down and talk to him about where he was coming from and what his views were and whether they matched mine. By the end we both felt very confident that we were coming from the same place.”Moores said he was looking forward to Pietersen’s style of leadership and was confident he would be just as successful as Vaughan, despite their contrasting personalities. He singled out an encouraging sign that senior members in the team had welcomed Pietersen’s appointment, after batsman Andrew Strauss admitted his disappointment in losing out on the captaincy race. Strauss said he eyed the Test captaincy but agreed Pietersen was the best person for the job, given that he’s a regular in the XI in all three formats of the game.”He’ll be different to Michael [Vaughan] because he’s a different man,” Moores said. “Michael had his style and that was very successful. Kevin will bring Kevin Pietersen, which is crucial. He’ll be his own man and that’s going to be really important. What’s really promising is that the senior arm of the team is going to get behind him.”Moores, however, insisted he wouldn’t change his approach to coaching despite the change of guard. “Your coaching style changes with different people, but your coaching philosophy doesn’t change all that much,” he said. “I don’t particularly see my views on the game changing. The coach’s job is to try to take pressure off the captain.”Moores’ South African counterpart, Mickey Arthur, said his team will observe Pietersen closely when he takes charge for the first time in an official capacity on Thursday. He agreed that for teams to succeed, it’s essential for the captain and coach to think along the same lines.”The challenge is whether it affects his batting,”Arthur said. “What’s his vision going to be? I guess all those things will be answered in the next year or so. We can only wish him well from after the Oval Test match and we’ll watch with interest how it all unfolds.”As coach and captain you need to clarify the roles. It’s something Graeme [Smith] and I have done particularly well. You’ve got to back each other up in the roles you do. And you’ve got to have the same vision.”

Sehwag and Gambhir wrest initiative

India managed to walk away with the honours, thanks to a special two-wicket over from Anil Kumble and fifties by Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir

The Galle Test continued to amaze. The third day featured periods of heavyattrition, heavy artillery, then some attrition and some more artillery, and two wickets in two overs to cap it off. India managed to walk away with thehonours, thanks to a special two-wicket over from Anil Kumble andfifties by Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. Despite MahelaJayawardene’s calm innings and two late strikes by Sri Lanka, India moved towards a comfortable lead on a pitch that could be at its worst in the fourth innings. After India had secured a 37-run lead in the first innings, it was Sehwagwho drove home the advantage, continuing in familiar vein: he hitthe first ball he faced for a boundary. Nuwan Kulasekara got a repeat dosefour times in his four overs. Muttiah Muralitharan, introduced in the sixthover, was swept for a four in his first over and a six in his second.Ajantha Mendis, brought on in the 17th over, was cut for a four in hissecond over.Only Chaminda Vaas, who was faced mostly by Gambhir, escaped the treatment. Finally it took a special catch – fast and high, taken at short cover – by Tillakaratne Dilshan to dismiss Sehwag.Gambhir, who had made a slow start, then quietly took the front seat.He had scored two runs off 20 when Sehwag had 22 off 15, but when Sehwag gotout for 50, Gambhir had 39 off 65. His handling of Murali was exceptional:no more getting suckered out of the crease, he was almost always right tothe pitch of the ball. He slog-swept Murali, cover-drove him, and thencharged him straight down to reach his second fifty of the match – a first for him, as with Sehwag, who for the first time scored a half-century in a match where he had scored a hundred already.Post-tea, Sri Lanka came back, like India in the first session, andtightened the screws. Twenty-three runs came off the next 11 overs – thelast ball of which was a special one. Mendis’ offbreak startedoutside leg stump in the air, drifted further away, and broke big to beatGambhir’s pad and take the off stump. Sachin Tendulkar and Dravid attacked in response. Tendulkar, especially, stepped out and also employed the vertical sweep to the spinners. It would not be an overstatement to say that Dravid was helped out of hisbad patch by the batsmen around him. At one point, 2.3 overs afterGambhir’s dismissal, he had faced just 15 balls in the ten preceding overs, and 48 out of the 22.3 overs he had been out in the middle for. When Gambhir got out, he hadfaced Mendis’ three previous overs. But that Dravid was much more comfortable was evident from two cuts for four through extra cover in one over, and a lofted shot he struck stepping out to Murali.Smart statsVirender Sehwag’s 50 in the second innings made it the second time in his career when he had two 50-plus scores in the same Test. The first came in Adelaide earlier this year.Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir followed up their 167-run stand with a partnership of 90. In all, India’s openers have managed two 50-plus stands, one being over 100, in seven Tests; the current pair has done it twice. Both Sehwag and Gambhir scored fifties in both innings: it’s only the second time that an Indian opening pair has done so in Tests. The first in Mumbai in 1978 was similar, with three fifties and a double-hundred.Jayawardene’s 86 was his 11th 50-plus knock in 18 innings in Galle; it also brought his average at the ground down marginally, from 99.21 to 98.33.Harbhajan Singh’s 6 for 102 is his best figures away from home, and his first five-wicket haul overseas in over two years. The highest fourth-innings total in Galle is England’s 210 for 9 in 2003, when they held on to a draw. Sri Lanka have won only three out of 32 Tests in which they have chased a total over 200, while India have lost only five out of 69 Tests in which they have defended a target over 200.However, just when India came close to seeming clear favourites, Vaasstruck with an offcutter, drawing Tendulkar out and getting an edge. In thenext over, Murali got a decision, via review, against Dravid thatleft the batsman irate. It was not, perhaps, the actual final decision that wasobjectionable – the offbreak pitched outside off and would have takenmiddle – but the inordinate amount of time taken by Jayawardene to go forthe review. Two wickets had fallen in two overs, the Galle Test had turnedonce more, and India were not the dominant side anymore. The first session, too, saw its fair share of twists and turns. It wasslow, but just as intense and gripping as the others, and perhapsmore crucial. Almost every over – before Mahela started farming strikefollowing a double-strike – featured a loud shout, or an edge that fellshort, or a sharp spinning delivery that missed everything. Kumble andHarbhajan bowled 24 successive overs in tandem, and but for a three-overspell by Ishant Sharma in the final session yesterday, they bowled 68overs at a stretch. Harbhajan took his unbroken spell to 37 overs, andthen started bowling immediately from the other end.Jayawardene, despite back-to-back wickets for Kumble and Harbhajan, kept SriLanka in the game. He was not affected by the spinning ball, thevariations in the bowling, and all that happened around him. There wereno free runs on offer; but he was cool enough to not try to hit himself out of thesituation. He managed a total of five boundaries in the session – MalindaWarnapura had hit four in one over yesterday. And once Prasanna andVaas fell in consecutive overs, he farmed the strike, getting goodsupport from Kulasekara as he did.In keeping with the narrative of the match, just when Sri Lankaseemed to have got the upper hand, another turnaround followed, with Kumble making his first impact of the series. Jayawardene, 14 short ofa deserved century, edged Kumble to Dinesh Karthik, and the game was back inthe balance. Although Jayawardene and Kulasekara frustrated India for 17.1overs, India had managed to keep the partnership down to 36 runs. Kumble andHarbhajan then proceeded to remove the next two – taking the last threewickets in seven balls – to get the lead, the importance of which, on thispitch, will surely be disproportionately higher than the actual number it consistsof.

Palace rebuffed in David Brooks pursuit

Crystal Palace have made an inquiry for Bournemouth midfielder David Brooks as new manager Patrick Vieira looks to further bolster his squad.

What’s the story?

According to The Sun, the Eagles opened talks with the south coast club over the highly-rated 24-year-old, but the Cherries were quick to inform them that he’s not for sale.

The report claims that the Bournemouth hierarchy wanted £50m to release Brooks a year ago following their relegation from the Premier League and are now refusing to quote a price.

He’d be another Parish masterclass

After leaving boyhood club Sheffield United in an £11.5m move back in the summer of 2018, Brooks enjoyed a fabulous maiden Premier League campaign at the Vitality Stadium.

The Wales international bagged seven goals and laid on a further five assists in 30 league appearances for his teammates as the versatile youngster showcased his quality and potential in the top flight. However, Brooks’ progress was severely hampered by a persistent ankle injury throughout 2019/20, limiting him to just nine outings in the entire campaign.

A return to form last season saw the creative talent make 13 goal contributions in all competitions, though, but his efforts weren’t enough to get Bournemouth out of the Championship.

As a result, the £14.4m-rated magician is now attracting interest from the Premier League, and Vieira openly admitted that he’s searching for extra reinforcements in Friday’s press conference.

“When you look at the squad we are maybe a little bit more light on numbers, and we are working hard to improve the squad (with) the window are still open. We will try to bring players that can improve our squad,” the Palace manager stated.

“I think where we are maybe a little bit more short is upfront and in the midfield, I think it would be good to reinforce those positions.”

Palace chairman Steve Parish has already pulled off several pieces of impressive business in the current window, securing the services of Joachim Andersen, Marc Guehi, Michael Olise and Conor Gallagher.

Adding Brooks into the mix would certainly go down as another masterstroke from the capital club’s chief, given the impressive figures the Welshman has racked up at Bournemouth.
