Faz parte do futebol.

Quietly confident South Africa take on Kenya

South Africa have an embarrassingly clean slate against Kenya

Anand Vasu19-Sep-2002South Africa have an embarrassingly clean slate against Kenya. The Proteas, second only to Australia in world cricket at the moment, are especially well-organised when it comes to limited-overs cricket. The first to embrace modern coaching methods and technological advances, the South Africans are probably more professional and businesslike than any other team in the world. Things could not be more different for their next opponents – Kenya. When the two teams line-up at the R Premadasa Stadium tomorrow, not too many people will back the Kenyans to go all the way. Of the seven times they have come up against the South Africans, the Kenyans have only been competitive once, reaching 196 after restricting South Africa to 220/7 at the Nairobi Gymkhana in September 1999. Perhaps that happened because the South Africans were a bit complacent. After finishing an optional net session at the Premadasa Stadium, South African skipper Shaun Pollock made it clear that they were not taking the game against Kenya lightly: “We can’t take Kenya lightly. There’s no doubt about that. From a confidence point of view it’s important that we go out there and play well. They came close against the West Indies and gave Australia a good game in Kenya so we’re going to have to motivate ourselves and really come out firing.”Although they are going into the game in all seriousness, South Africa are likely to miss more than one key player. Nicky Boje has been ruled out as he fractured a finger attempting to take a return catch against the West Indies. Allan Donald who has a niggle in the right heel that has bothered him off and on over the years might get a bit of rest while he can and Jonty Rhodes has an injured thumb from Morocco that has not quite healed completely. In all likelihood Dale Benkenstein will come in for Rhodes, Makhaya Ntini for Donald and Justin Ontong for Boje. After discussing the injury worries Pollock mentioned that his team had watched a part of the game between Kenya and the West Indies.”We saw the first half – Kenya’s bowling and then had to go to practice. We’ve got tapes of their batting in the team room. Maurice (Odumbe) and Steve (Tikolo) are the key men, good batters and Maurice does a job with the ball too so we’ve identified that and we’re working out our game plans for each person,” explained Pollock. That gives you an example of the kind of rigour with which the South Africans approach playing the game. When one cheeky reporter tried to suggest that the South Africans, if they won the toss, should bowl first so the game would be over as soon as possible, Pollock said quickly: “We will look at the wicket and then decide whether we bat or bowl. You can’t decide beforehand, that’s not the way we play. Kenya are the best of the non-Test playing nations; there’s no doubt about that. Some might argue that they’re even better than Bangladesh at the moment. So we’re not going to try and get it over quickly or anything. We’re going to treat it like a proper One-Day International which it is,” said the skipper.Sandeep Patil, former India international and now coach of the Kenyan team is raring to go despite the loss against the West Indies. Unlike the South Africans, the Kenyans have no injury worries at all and are fully fit.The coach highlighted how every game is important for the Kenyans: “For us, every single game is a big one, every opponent tough. It’s not enough for us to just play to our ability, we have to rise above that. We have nothing to lose,” he said.Although not quite in the class of some other teams in world cricket, the Kenyans are certainly not afraid to try their hardest.”When we take the field we have to believe in ourselves. What we discuss and plan is important and we need to do that. But at the end of the day we need to play positive cricket out in the middle and get the result,” explained Patil. When asked what he thought of his team’s performance in getting close against the West Indies, Patil shrugged. “See there really is not much to getting close. In one-day cricket the margin of victory or defeat is often just 20 runs. So you need to go out there and win, not just get close. You’re never `quite close’ or anything as people say. We have to go out with a positive mindset and play above ourselves,” he said.Although Patil was a touch understated when he spoke of his team’s chances, it is clear that his team do fancy themselves to have a good game or two. They have already shown in the past that they have it in them to take on the best.”When we get on the field we want to approach the game and be competitive. We don’t want to look silly being bowled out for 50 or less,” opined Patil. It seems to be a routine these days, and a dangerous one at that, for captains to sound a warning before matches. Such theatrics were confirmed to aggressive boxers and loud football managers bit seem to have filtered subtly into cricket as well.Pollock warned, “We know Jacques is just one good knock away from a big score. He’s been hurt by the fact that he has not been able to score as many runs as he would have liked. So people better watch out. He’ll be more determined once he does get in the groove.”Come on Jacques, let’s see what you’ve got. That’s what some competing teams will say. Kenya of course, will find out soon enough.

Paul Stewart: Man City won’t land Kane, Grealish and Declan Rice

Premier League champions Manchester City have been linked with some big names this summer, but former player Paul Stewart can’t see them landing all three of Declan Rice, Jack Grealish and Harry Kane in this window.

There is a desire for City to land a striker this summer following the departure of Sergio Aguero to Barcelona.

The main name mentioned to replace Aguero is Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane with an astonishing £160m move mooted, and Stewart believes the club will make him their priority this summer, telling TT: “I think City are probably going to go all out for Kane.”

Manager Pep Guardiola will want to add the right players to his squad to ensure City are well equipped to defend their Premier League crown and also to ensure they reach the latter stages of the Champions League also.

With plenty of games to be played next season, squad size is going to be important. Fernandinho recently signed a new deal with the club, but there were reports from The Times that the club were lining up a move for another defensive midfielder, West Ham’s Declan Rice, if the Brazilian left in the summer.

As well as Kane and Rice, ESPN reported last month that City were closing in on a £100m swoop for Aston Villa star man Grealish, and whilst all three would make a statement and create a Galactico summer, Stewart can’t see the club landing all three targets.

He added: “I think it’s a push for them to get all three, they’ll probably get two of the three.”

'This was one of our best NUL performances' says Turner

Somerset Sabres may already be relegated to the second division of the NUL National League but from the performance they produced to beat Kent Spitfires at the County Ground they looked anything but a relegated side

Richard Walsh08-Sep-2002Somerset Sabres may already be relegated to the second division of the NUL National League but from the performance they produced to beat Kent Spitfires at the County Ground they looked anything but a relegated side. After being put into bat the Sabres openers Jamie Cox and Piran Holloway got the side off to a good start, putting on 72 before the skipper was out for 41.Coming in at number three Keith Dutch added 58 for the second wicket before with the score on 130 he too perished for 34.Cornishman Holloway continued to play in some style and remained unbeaten until the end of the Sabres innings by which time the left hander had taken his score onto 112 and produced his best batting performance of the season.Towards the end of the Sabres overs there was a breezy knock of 24 from Pete Trego, before they closed on 244 for 6.When Kent batted a good spell from both opening bowlers Matt Bulbeck and Simon Francis ensured that they were never up with the asking rate, and they lost Matthew Fleming with the score on 21 after he became the first of Rob Turner’s five victims in the game.Steve Waugh and Robert Key added 58 for the second wicket before Key was stumped by Turner off Ian Blackwell.Wicket-keeper Paul Nixon followed shortly afterwards as Francis held onto a skier in front of the Colin Atkinson Pavilion, and Arul Suppiah took another good catch at deep square leg to dismiss Matthew Walker and Kent had slipped to 91 for 4.David Fulton and Waugh took the score past the hundred but five runs later Fulton was trapped LBW by Trego. One of the biggest cheers of the day was reserved for the young all rounder from Weston super Mare when he clean bowled Aussie star Waugh in the 32nd over and from 120 for 7 the Spitfires slumped to 126 all out in the 34th over. The pick of the Somerset bowlers was slow left armer Ian Blackwell who ended with 4 for 24 from his 6 overs. At the end of the game Jamie Cox told me: "This was a good win for us and we are delighted with the result. There were some excellent individual performances today from Piran Holloway who had a brilliant innings, Ian Blackwell who took four valuable wickets and Rob Turner who claimed five victims."Batting star Piran Holloway : "This was a very good performance from the lads today in this competition and will give us some confidence for next season. I have been playing well all the season and it was good for me to have opportunity to prove this with my innings today. It’s good to show people that I can play a bit sometimes."Wicket-keeper Rob Turner told me: "It really spun big today. `Blackie’ put it in the right place on a good length and the batsmen did the rest. All of our bowlers bowled very tight today which meant that I could get up to the stumps early on before their batsmen could settle."The 2002 beneficiary concluded: " This was one of the best Somerset NUL performances that I’ve played in for a very long time and it was very pleasing to be part of it."

West Brom fans react to Tristan Rowe exit

Aston Villa have completed the signing of West Bromwich Albion youngster Triston Rowe.

Rowe, an England Under-15 international, follows Tim Iroegbunam in leaving the Baggies’ youth set-up for their Midlands rivals.

Iroegbunam was fast-tracked to the Under-23s last season, and his performances earned him the Academy Player of the Year award (via Birmingham Mail). Villa will have to pay six-figure compensation after striking the deal.

And a third West Brom starlet could yet make the switch. Football Insider reported earlier in July that Villa had reached an agreement with 20-year-old midfielder Finn Azaz, and that move could be tied-up ‘soon’.

West Brom are back in the Championship after their Premier League return lasted just a single season. They amassed only 26 points over the course of the 38-game season, leaving them a full 13 points adrift of safety.

Fan feed WBA Report relayed the news about Rowe, and here’s what supporters made of it.
