The Toronto Blue Jays pulled off a wild 4-3 extra-innings win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday to earn their sixth straight victory.

The Blue Jays took a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning, but the Angels tied up the game the next inning on a three-run homer from Jo Adell. With the game tied through the ninth, the two teams went into extra innings.

The Angels were held scoreless through the top of the 10th inning. To start the bottom half of the inning, Los Angeles pitcher Sam Bachman walked Blue Jays outfielder Nathan Lukes. Disaster then struck for the Angels. With automatic runner Myles Straw at second and Lukes at first, Ernie Clement hit a sacrifice bunt. Bachman quickly recovered the bunt, but committed an error as he soared a throw over first base, allowing Straw to run home and earn the walk-off win.

The Blue Jays quickly raced onto the field to celebrate the win, which puts them two games ahead of the New York Yankees in the American League East. The Blue Jays recent win streak has them atop the AL East with a 50-38 record, and feeling optimistic about their chances to win the division for the first time in a decade.

Meanwhile, the crushing loss puts the Angels one game below .500 once again. The Angels are trying to remain in contention in the American League playoff race, but these kinds of losses will keep them on the outside looking in for now.

Curtis Jones has shed light on how the Liverpool squad feel about Mohamed Salah following last week's outburst at Elland Road. Salah dropped a bombshell in his post-match interview following the 3-3 draw and claimed he had been "thrown under the bus", having started from the bench for the third successive match. "I don't really like to speak on another man's issues or his business and stuff – that has to do with Mo. But at the end of the day, I think the important thing that Mo made clear was that it's not against the team or anything like that, just a personal issue, and that's it."

Jones' quotes echo what Van Dijk said of Salah over the weekend. The Liverpool captain has revealed that he has spoken to Salah, stating: "Of course I speak to him. I speak about everything with him. Of course I've told him I want him to stay. The rest I'm not going to tell you.

"I wish him all the best and come back hopefully. I have no control over that. He is one of the leaders. I would love to have him around because he is one of the leaders. But obviously the fact is he is going to AFCON. I wish him absolutely all the best. We will be in contact over the next days and weeks, we always are. And then let's see."

Gerrard coached Jones at both U18 and U19 level, and the current Liverpool star has revealed that rough treatment from a club icon helped guide him.

"Not a bad person to follow, is it? Steven has obviously been a huge part of my career and life," Jones told LFC TV. "And I say life because he was probably the first man to really have a pop at me at the academy! And that changed me to think I'm not better than anybody else or anything like that. It was a reality check in terms of how I played and the role that he gave me.

"Steven would be the first to say that once I overcame a thing where I'd complicate things and I thought I was the man because I had the 10 on my back and all things like that, that I'd be the first man that he'd pick on his team.

"I'd always been a kid who was top of the age group and all things like that. At times you can become a little bit passive, I'd say. And Steven was the first one to give me a real, real check. Coming from a man like him, a man who has played the game, a man who I idolised, I've got to change if it's him who is telling me."

Jones continued: "From there, he stuck with me and I stuck with him and we worked. A year after I'm around the first team and now I'm stood here on 200 games so he's obviously a man who I would like to thank.

"It's mad. I actually had a chat with Trey [Nyoni] and Rio [Ngumoha] was there as well. I just said, 'Boys, I know you will hear it all the time from staff and family around you, about how fast it goes. But my God, it goes so fast'. If I think about my first game, Wolves away, and how fast the whole thing has changed.

"I can only thank the staff around me and the team-mates around me who have always got the belief in me to keep me at the club and when I play, to trust that I can play in that many games."

That is according to a report from Spain, which states Man United are now preparing a €100m (£87m) bid for Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton, who has been identified as their ‘absolute priority’ target in the middle of the park.

Amorim is personally keen on signing the England international, with bringing in a new central midfielder deemed essential, given that Casemiro is likely to leave upon the expiration of his contract next summer.

Crystal Palace are reluctant to sell one of their prized assets, but there is now growing interest, with Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur also keen.

The first leg of Thursday’s doubleheader between the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves ended on a questionable call from home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman.

The Braves were able to load the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, trailing the Phillies by a single run. Left fielder Eli White was at the plate facing Phillies closer Jordan Romano.

On the fourth pitch of the at bat, Romano delivered a breaking ball that appeared to be out of the zone, but Dreckman disagreed, punching White out and ending the game.

From the announce booth, the Braves broadcast team lamented the missed call.

Missed calls are a part of baseball, but when they happen in high leverage moments, they are hard to look past.

Thursday’s game-ending call came just hours after an even worse called strike three ended the Angels’ hopes of a comeback against the Yankees on Wednesday night.

Major League Baseball has been experimenting with its ABS challenge system in spring training, which would allow teams the chance to review some calls on balls and strikes. Should the system eventually make its way to the regular season, it’s possible that calls like this are nothing but a memory in the near future.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has hit out at Florentino Perez after the Real Madrid chief reignited accusations over the Negreira case during his latest assembly speech. Perez linked Barca’s historic success to payments made to the former refereeing vice-president, prompting a fierce response as Laporta accused Madrid of “obsession” and weekly attempts to influence referees in a fiery escalation of the long-running rivalry.

Madrid president Perez reopened the Negreira controversy, using his most recent Assembly intervention to once again question Barcelona’s integrity and imply historic refereeing corruption. His comments immediately triggered a new wave of tension between the two giants at a time when La Liga’s title race is heating up.

Perez referenced charts, statistics and historic disciplinary data as he accused the Catalan giants of benefiting from improper influence between 2001 and 2018, the 17-year period in which Barca were alleged to have paid €8.4 million to former refereeing vice-president Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.

He outlined his stance bluntly in front of club members: "It’s not normal that Barcelona has paid the vice president of referees more than €8m for at least 17 years, whatever the reason," Perez denounced before the members. "I repeat: whatever the reason, it’s not normal."

He continued to say that Enriquez Negreira held "a key position in the refereeing hierarchy," responsible for referee promotions and demotions. "A period that coincides, coincidentally, with Barcelona’s best sporting results in our country," added Perez.

The Los Blancos president also presented numerical data to justify his argument: "Real Madrid had a net balance of two red cards in 2021,” he explained. "And Barcelona, 61 red cards. That’s a difference of no less than 59. On the other hand, during the same period, the balance in Europe is almost identical: +12 for Barca and +13 for Madrid."

These remarks set the stage for a fierce response, one Laporta delivered within hours during an institutional visit to Andorra.

Real Madrid's television channel is trying to influence referees every week."

Manchester United and Liverpool have both been linked with signing Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, but it is Ruben Amorim’s side who are in pole position ahead of the January transfer window.

Semenyo is one of the most impressive wide players in the Premier League currently, scoring six goals and registering three assists in the competition leading into the international break.

The 25-year-old is wanted by a host of top clubs, with United among those thought to be right in the mix to snap him up, potentially even in the January transfer window.

Semenyo has a £65m release clause in his current Bournemouth contract for a certain time period, with David Ornstein reporting the Cherries will effectively be powerless to stop a departure in early January.

Liverpool look to be the most interested out of United’s Premier League adversaries, as they look for an injection of attacking quality midway through the season, with the Reds believing Semenyo can be their next Sadio Mane.

According to a report from Spain, Manchester United are the front-runners to acquire Semenyo’s signature from Bournemouth in January, with INEOS seeing him as a top target for the Red Devils.

The report claims it’s “hard to believe Manchester United won’t secure the signing” due to their willingness to pay the release fee and Semenyo being interested in a move to Old Trafford.

They are ahead of Liverpool in the race, which will no doubt delight the supporters, with Amorim possibly eyeing a long-term replacement for Marcus Rashford, should he leave Old Trafford for good at the end of this season.

Semenyo feels like an ideal signing for United in the mould of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, in terms of players who have proven themselves in the Premier League and are ready to make the step-up to a bigger club.

The Ghanaian provides strong end product on a consistent basis, and has scored twice in three Premier League appearances against the Red Devils, while Pep Guardiola recently hailed his ability, calling him an “extraordinary” player.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola was asked earlier this week about the situation, saying he isn’t worried about losing his star player in January.

Tanner Bibee will miss his scheduled start for the Cleveland Guardians against the Kansas City Royals on Opening Day due to an illness. It was reportedly due to food poisoning, and MLB fans had a lot of fun with that.

During an appearance on the before the 2024 seasonBibee claimed he eats Chipotle every day he pitches, and that led to a whole lot of jokes.

The jokes came fast and furious.

Bibee recently signed a five-year, $48 million contract extension and he has developed into the team's clear No. 1 starter.

In 2024, Bibee went 12-8 with a 3.47 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP and 187 strikeouts in 173 2/3 innings over 31 starts. That followed a rookie season in 2023 in which he went 10-4 with a 2.98 ERA in 25 starts.

The 26-year-old was excellent in spring training, as he went 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP.

Hopefully Bibee recovers quickly and can get back on the mound soon. Ben Lively will step in and start in his place.
