Spurs transfer target Marcelo Brozovic is shades of Luka Modric

Fresh reports emerging from Italy claim Tottenham Hotspur have inquired about the potential of a new midfield addition this summer…

What’s the word?

According to Calciomercato, Spurs have asked Inter Milan about a move for Marcelo Brozovic with the Croatian playmaker one of the players expendable to Antonio Conte.

They claim that the 27-year-old doesn’t want to leave the San Siro, but he could be sold in order to raise funds to bolster their midfield engine room.

Brozovic has previously been linked with a move to Chelsea, which would involve a swap for N’Golo Kante whilst West Ham United have also been mooted with interest.

Shades of Lampard & Modric

Jose Mourinho is pretty stacked for midfielders going into the new season this weekend, though it’s no surprise to see him reportedly keen on Brozovic given his playing style.

In the past, he’s been likened to the Portuguese’s former talisman, Frank Lampard as he likes to start deep in midfield before making late yet intelligent runs into and around the box.

Perhaps he should also draw comparisons to Luka Modric, who was a hit in north London over ten years ago.

That’s backed up by Mourinho himself who lauded Croatia’s midfield options whilst working as a pundit during the World Cup, he said: “Modric, Rakitic and Brozovic is the same level. I think Croatia has a great mentality and fantastic midfield players to control the possession of the game.”

The box-to-box maestro enjoyed a pretty decent season in the Serie A and Europa League, scoring three goals and providing eight assists. He also averaged 1.4 interceptions and 1.2 key passes per game, via WhoScored.

At times last season, Spurs lacked a creative spark from the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Dele Alli and the divisive Tanguy Ndombele – the trio combined for just eight assists – even Serge Aurier managed more than any of the three.

In Brozovic, the north Londoners would be getting a player with a “compass in his foot,” according to ex-Inter boss Luciano Spalletti whilst national team head coach Zlatko Dalic believes he “his technique is perfect.”

It would be quite some statement from Daniel Levy if he were to clinch the £45m-rated Croatian.

AND in other news, reunion with Spurs legend would be a nightmare from Daniel Levy…

Spurs must land Allan Saint-Maximin this summer

According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham are interested in signing Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin this summer.

What’s the word?

As Jose Mourinho heads into his first summer transfer window in charge of Spurs, all eyes will who the Portuguese man will look to bring to strengthen a squad that is having an incredibly difficult season – ahead of their clash against Everton on Monday night, the Lilywhites find themselves in tenth place in the Premier League.

But as per The Daily Mail, Spurs have joined French giants PSG in the growing list of clubs to show an interest in signing Saint-Maximin, and quite crucially, they may have an advantage the Ligue 1 side don’t.

Can you name every one of Spurs’ top goalscorers from the past 15 seasons? It’s a tricky one…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The report claims that whilst Spurs don’t have the biggest budget, they “would be willing to offer players such as Danny Rose and Juan Foyth plus cash”.

Game-changer

In what has been an impressive debut campaign in English football for Saint-Maximin, the Frenchman has been one of the shining lights of Newcastle’s season.

The winger has scored four times and provided a further seven assists, and has at times been unstoppable. Speaking after his performance against West Ham earlier in the season, former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison said: “Saint-Maximin, he was unplayable. I don’t know how you defend against players like that. He doesn’t look like he knows what he’s going to do so I don’t know how defenders feel when he’s getting at them.”

It’s a sentiment echoed by The Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope too, who described him as “unplayable” and the Premier League’s “most enjoyable star to watch”. That directness and quick feet – Saint-Maximin has averaged a ridiculous 4.6 dribbles per game this season – is far unlike anyone else in the current Spurs squad, with first-ranked Heung-min Son averaging exactly half that.

Even in Gareth Bale’s most prolific season at the club back in the 2012/2013 campaign, the Welshman only averaged 1.8 dribbles per game. Having someone like Saint-Maximin who can commit defenders, and draw double teams, can open up space for the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli to wreak havoc. It’s the kind of move that could transform the Spurs attack for next season.

Liverpool transfer news: Aissa Mandi is a bargain replacement for Lovren

Liverpool are looking a little short in the defensive department, so it’s no surprise to see them linked with an array of players and they could land themselves a centre-back bargain if latest reports are to be believed.

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic, the Premier League champions’ financial constraints have pretty much written off any chances of making a move for either Kalidou Koulibaly or Diego Carlos.

Though, a move for Real Betis powerhouse Aissa Mandi is “cheaper and more realistic”.

It’s believed that the La Liga outfit want €12m (£11m) for his services following a €10m (£9m) bid earlier this month, as per Dario de Sevilla, via Sport Witness.

Lovren successor

The Reds offloaded Dejan Lovren for £10.9m to Zenit St Petersburg in July, leaving only three senior centre-backs at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal, so they’d be rather wise to use that money to land Mandi this summer.

He may not be as luxurious as Koulibaly nor a stonecold beast like Carlos, but he’d still be a huge bargain at that price.

The 28-year-old is very much a class ball-playing defender having averaged 62 passes per game at an accuracy rate of 89.7%, which also includes a whopping 4.7 long attempts, too, via WhoScored.

Mandi has also managed 3 clearances, 1.3 interceptions and 1.1 tackles each appearance in La Liga this season.

Earlier in the campaign, he was part of the Betis side to shutout title-winners Real Madrid at the Bernabeu – keeping a front three of Eden Hazard, Karim Benzema and Rodrygo at bay is certainly no mean feat.

Only Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique have been better at playing out from the back than the Betis colossus.

Michael Edwards should absolutely sanction a move for Mandi as he’ll be filling a vital need all for a very decent price.

AND in other news, Liverpool must sell two outcasts to land Klopp TARGET…

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs ready to get rid of Serge Aurier and replace him with Max Aarons

Tottenham Hotspur have struggled to find a suitable replacement for Kieran Trippier ever since he left for Atletico Madrid.

Jose Mourinho is short of options at right-back ahead of a busy schedule as the Premier League heads into the crunch stage of the competition.

Serge Aurier fills that position at present, but his conduct has been scrutinised by the club after making a string of high-profile blunders.

Mourinho is now trying to find a replacement because Spurs have had enough of Aurier’s antics off the pitch.

According to The Athletic, as per @Daily_Hotspur, Tottenham are willing to listen to offers for Aurier and want to replace him with Max Aarons.

The Lilywhites have been linked to some of the best players in the world, but none are arguably as exciting as Norwich City’s hottest prospect.

Aarons, who has been praised by Darren Bent in the past, has been one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise abysmal season for the Canaries.

Newly-promoted Norwich have found their return to the Premier League to be a real struggle and are surely destined to drop to the Championship.

Earlier this week, talkSPORT revealed Aarons will most likely not be with them if they do go down, which has given Mourinho a major boost.

Aurier has angered the club’s hierarchy after he repeatedly broke the government guidelines during the nationwide lockdown.

As a results, Spurs are ready to get rid of the £14m-valued ace and replace him with the Norwich City star instead.

Although Aurier has earned a higher WhoScored rating than the 20-year-old this season, Aarons has actually made more blocks per game and drawn more fouls.

Given his young age, Aarons is still at the early stages of his career, and he could become a valuable asset in the future, as his market value will no doubt continue to increase over time if he can maintain his impressive form.

Tottenham fans, should the board sign Max Aarons in the summer? Let us know down below!

Marcelo Bielsa should use pressure to get the best out of his players

Norwich City made it well and truly clear to Leeds United on Saturday evening that they will push them to the very end of the season to claim the Championship title and secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men were put to the sword by the Canaries at Elland Road, suffering a 3-1 defeat that saw Norwich move top of the league table with a better goal-difference than Leeds.

But, while the big defeat was probably a big wake-up call to the Whites that they still have a long way to go if they were to play top-flight football next season, the loss presents a good opportunity for the manager to push his players even further.

Leeds travel to Teesside this coming Saturday to tackle Middlesbrough in what could be another tough encounter.

Middlesbrough are currently fifth in the league and are more than capable of delivering a good performance against Bielsa’s team.

But, the manager should use the pressure to his team’s advantage and get Leeds to raise their game for the match and the rest of the campaign.

Leeds have shown the tremendous talent and desire they have in their squad and Bielsa has done a brilliant job at getting his players to deliver at just the right times this season.

The loss on Saturday was only their third one at home this campaign and would’ve been somewhat of a shock to the club, given how easily and poorly the conceded the three goals.

This should also motivate this current set of Leeds players to make sure such a result doesn’t occur again this season, while the defeat should also not see the club revert into a state of panic, because they now sit second on the table.

Leeds have proven on more than a few occasions this season that they know how to bounce back from a setback and this trip to Middlesbrough presents them with the perfect opportunity to show once again how committed and determined they are to play in the Premier League next season.

France player ratings vs Gibraltar: Kylian Mbappe scores stunning hat-trick as Didier Deschamps’ side record historic 14-0 victory – the largest EVER European scoreline

Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick as France made history with a record-breaking 14-0 victory against 10-man Gibraltar on Saturday night.

Own goals from Ethan Santos and Aymen Mouelhi put Didier Deschamps' side 2-0 up inside the opening five minutes before debutant Warren Zaire-Emery got on the scoresheet soon after.

The 17-year-old was fouled as he shot at goal and Santos was sent off for the challenge after a VAR review. The onslaught continued when Kylian Mbappe, Jonathan Clauss, Kingsley Coman, and substitute Youssouf Fofana all scored before half time.

After stopping the bleeding for more than 15 second half minutes, Adrien Rabiot bagged and then Coman got his second with 25 minutes remaining. Substitute Ousmane Dembele added a splendid solo goal and Mbappe grabbed a brace to go third in France's all-time scoring list.

Mbappe then netted his hat-trick in magnificent fashion as the captain chipped the keeper from 40 yards to make it 12-0. Olivier Giroud rifled in a 13th one minute from time and then helped France secure the biggest win in European Championship qualification history – eclipsing Germany's 13-0 win over San Marino in 2006 – with a stylish bicycle kick.

GOAL rates France's players from Allianz Riviera Stadium…

GettyGoalkeeper & Defence

Mike Maignan (N/A):

It took until the 60th minute for Gibraltar to fashion something of a chance on the French goal. Had virtually nothing to do.

Jonathan Clauss (7/10):

Scored the second best goal of the evening with a stunning long-range effort, but had nothing to do in defence.

Jean-Clair Todibo (7/10):

Like his defensive teammates, had very little to do and tried his best to attack whenever possible.

Dayot Upamecano (7/10):

Wasn't troubled at the back but looked to get forward at every opportunity.

Lucas Hernandez (7/10):

Was always an option out on the left and was unlucky not to get a goal himself.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Warren Zaire-Emery (8/10):

Looked impressive on his debut as he showed pace, power, and skill; plus, he took his goal with aplomb. Was unfortunate to be forced off with an injury inside the opening 20 minutes.

Adrien Rabiot (7/10):

Was very relaxed in a midfield that overran the visitors all night.

Antoine Griezmann (8/10):

Was in the thick of the action as he ran the show in midfield. Beautifully set up Giroud late on.

Getty ImagesAttack

Kingsley Coman (8/10):

Was very dangerous in attack as his pace and trickery caused the away side problems throughout; and he got on the scoresheet in classy style.

Marcus Thuram (7/10):

His pressure forced Gibraltar into committing one of the early own goals and the Inter Milan forward put in the hard yards for his team. Lacked a clinical touch, mind.

Kylian Mbappe (9/10):

Took his penalty with ease, was in the right place at the right time for his second and then scored the goal of the night with a brilliant long-range strike.

Had a well-taken goal disallowed for offside but got two late on, the best of which was a brilliant overhead kick.

Ousmane Dembele (7/10):

Scored a lovely solo goal mere minutes after coming on as he weaved in and out of Gibraltar's defence.

Boubacar Kamara (N/A):

Came on when France were out of sight.

William Saliba (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

Didier Deschamps (8/10):

Fielded a strong side and his subs were very effective in the second half in a record-breaking night.

Man Utd's top 10 away and third kits of all time – ranked

As the Red Devils unveil their new away shirt for the 2023-24 season, GOAL ranks United's most stylish kits they've worn on the road

'Oh what fun it is to see United win away!' Manchester United's remarkable success in the Premier League era has owed a lot to the team's excellent form on the road, helped by having some of the loudest and most dedicated travelling fans in the division.

And they have had some exceptional away kits to accompany them on their journeys. But the less said about the team's away form in the 2022-23 season, the better.

And so as United unveil their opinion-splitting away kit for for 2023-24, GOAL ranks their previous efforts – and there's no room for the grey 'invisible' kit from Southampton in 1996!

Getty102001-02: Two for the price of one

The club released this reversible away and third kit to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of changing their name from Newton Heath to Manchester United. It was a gift for fans who liked getting value for their money, as they effectively got two shirts for the price of one.

The team wore the white shirt more often, the highlight being the epic FA Cup third-round clash at Aston Villa when they came from two goals down to win 3-2, sparking a huge pitch invasion.

The gold kit had less happy memories, such as back-to-back defeats at Arsenal in the League Cup and the Premier League, when Fabian Barthez made two howlers in a matter of minutes to gift Thierry Henry two goals.

AdvertisementGetty92012-14: Van Persie's clinical season

After agonisingly missing out on the 2011-12 Premier League title to Sergio Aguero's 94th-minute goal for Manchester City, Sir Alex Ferguson demanded a prolific striker to ensure his side wrestled the title back from City. He got Robin van Persie, who had just had his best season with Arsenal and would need no time to bed in.

The Dutchman was outstanding in his first campaign, and some of his best moments came wearing this white away kit. One of his first away matches was at Southampton, when he missed a penalty but came roaring back to score a hat-trick, snatching a 3-2 win with an added-time header.

He had another day to remember while wearing the shirt at Anfield, scoring a late spot-kick to seal a 2-1 comeback win. Van Persie won the Golden Boot with 26 Premier League goals while United stormed their way to their 20th league title. Fittingly, the Dutchman bagged a hat-trick to mathematically seal it against Aston Villa.

Getty82016-17: Europa League glory in blue

Blue is not the first colour that comes to mind when you think of Manchester United, but it was fitting that the team wore this shirt in the Europa League final against Ajax. They had won their first European Cup in 1968 while wearing blue, and the colours served them well as they coasted to a 2-0 win in Stockholm.

It was a poignant night, as it came just two days after the shocking Manchester Arena bombing. On a day when the world was watching, the team did their city proud.

Getty Images7 2020-21: Unbeaten away all season

When United slumped to their eighth away defeat of the 2022-23 season by losing at West Ham, it was hard to believe that only two years ago the same team went 29 matches without losing an away game in the Premier League. That included the entirety of the 2020-21 season, when the Red Devils made a habit of staging comebacks away from home.

Of course, the fact there were no fans in stadiums during that season due to coronavirus restrictions helped United' achieve this impressive record, but they were the only team in the league to end the campaign unbeaten on the road.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side overturned deficits at West Ham, Everton, Sheffield United and Southampton, the latter two while wearing their black away kit (the less said about the ghastly third kit, which resembled a zebra, the better).

It was at St Mary's that Edinson Cavani had one of the finest moments of his brief two-year spell with the club, equalising with a diving header after coming off the bench then sealing a 3-2 victory in added time with another header.

Inside Marcus Rashford's incredible car collection – from a sextet of Mercedes to McLaren 765LT

The Manchester United talisman's car collection is indeed one for the sports car aficionados.

Marcus Rashford is arguably the best player to have emerged from Carrington in recent memory as the Manchester United forward is now one of the most-feared Premier League attackers.

The 25-year-old made his first-team debut in 2016, at the age of 18, and has since become one of the mainstays of the United team. He is coming off his career-best season, scoring 30 goals in 56 games in all competitions in 2022-23. This was the first time that Rashford breached the 30-goal mark, thanks to his rejuvenation under new coach Erik ten Hag.

Owing to his performances and his undeniable stature in the team, Rashford penned a new five-year deal with the Red Devils that saw him become the top earner at the club.

For all his on-field exploits, the English superstar has a luxurious collection of cars at his disposal.

GOAL takes a look at which cars Rashford owns.

Audi RS4 Avant | £66,261 / $84,460

Audi RS4 Avant is one of the oldest cars that Rashford drives. This car is a 2016 model which cost Rashford £66,261 / $84,460. This was his first car after he broke into the Man Utd first team. In its B8 iteration, the 4.2-liter FSI V8 engine in the Audi RS4 Avant produced 444 HP and 317 lb-ft of torque. It has a top speed of 250 kmph (155 mph) and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph (0-62 mph) in just 4.7 seconds.

AdvertisementMercedes-AMG G63 | £141,215 / $180,000

Just like many other footballers, Rashford owns a G-Wagon, too – the stunning Mercedes-AMG G63. The 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine in the Mercedes-AMG G63 SUV cranks out 577 HP and 627 lb-ft of torque. With a top speed of 240 kmph (149 mph), it has a 0 to 100 kmph (62 mph) acceleration time of under 3.9 seconds. The Lamborghini Urus, Cadillac Escalade V Series, Mercedes-AMG GLS63 AMG, Audi RSQ8, and other high-performance vehicles compete with the AMG G-Wagon. Rashford paid an extra £10,000 for customisation, which takes the total cost of this car to around £150k.

Mercedes-AMG GT63 S | £133,370 / $170,000

The Mercedes-AMG GT63 S successfully balances power and grace. This four-door coupe captivates with its aerodynamic shape and astonishing power from the hand-built V8 engine. The 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine in the 2023 Mercedes-AMG GT63 S generates 630 HP and 664 lb-ft of torque. It has a top speed of 314 kmph (195 mph) and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph (62 mph) in under 2.9 seconds.

Mercedes-AMG A45 Hatchback | £41,121 / $52,415

Rashford simply loves Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG hatchback, which has the distinction of being the most revered hatchback in the present day because it comes with a dedicated drift mode, is United's No. 10's least expensive vehicle. A 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 410 HP and 369 lb-ft of torque powers this Mercedes. It has a top speed of 435 kmph (270 mph!) and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds.

The story of Monza, Silvio Berlusconi and 'a bus full of wh*res'

The Italian is one of the most controversial characters in world politics, but his football team AC Monza is thriving…

The comedian Dylan Moran once joked that Silvio Berlusconi is "so thoroughly corrupt that every time he smiles, an angel gets gonorrhoea".

The former Italian prime minister is certainly a dubious character.

Only last Sunday, he criticised Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky, which prompted one of Zelensky's aides, Mykhailo Podolyak, to label Berlusconi "a VIP agitator who is acting in the interests of Russian propaganda".

On Wednesday, meanwhile, he was cleared of paying witnesses to lie in an underage prostitution case that has dogged him for more than a decade.

"Finally acquitted after more than 11 years of suffering, mud-slinging and incalculable political damage," he wrote on Twitter.

It is worth noting, though, that while Berlusconi was also acquitted in the original case, he had been found to have paid a teenager for sex.

However, there had been no proof that Berlusconi knew the girl in question was a minor.

One with no previous knowledge of Berlusconi would be forgiven, then, for thinking that he might shy away from discussing – let alone joking about – controversial topics such as prostitution.

But this is a man who has never been afraid to make light of the most uncomfortable of topics, so it didn't really come as much of a surprise when Berlusconi sparked uproar at Monza's Christmas dinner last December while initially paying tribute to the motivational skills of coach Raffaele Palladino.

'A bus full of wh*res'

"He is good, smart, kind, and able to stimulate our lads," the club president said.

"But I decided to add extra stimulation, so I told the lads, 'You will play Milan, Juventus, etc… so if you beat one of these big teams, I will have you greeted in the locker room by a bus full of whores!'"

It was classic Berlusconi and his 'joke' was met by laughter in the room.

However, when a video of the speech went viral, many Italians, who've long considered Berlusconi a national embarrassment, failed to see the funny side.

Which was wholly unsurprising, of course. The media mogul remains a hugely divisive figure across the country.

His political career has been blighted by scandal and yet, last year, he managed to secure a senate, while his Forza Italia party is a key component in the new right-wing coalition government led by Giorgia Meloni.

What is beyond dispute, though, is that Berlusconi has overseen a remarkable turnaround in Monza's fortunes since being persuaded to buy the club by his former CEO at AC Milan, Adriano Galliani, in 2018.

Advertisement'We must win the Scudetto'

The Biancorossi's potential has long been obvious. Located in one of the most industrious areas in northern Italy, in a city home to one of Formula 1's most famous race tracks, not far from the metropolis that is Milan, Monza has attracted plenty of ambitious investors in the past.

However, where others have failed, Berlusconi has succeeded, spectacularly, taking Monza from Serie C to Serie A in just four seasons.

Perhaps that shouldn't have been so surprising, given Berlusconi and Galliani worked wonders at Milan, winning a whopping 29 trophies during their 31-year stay at San Siro.

However, when they finally left, in 2017, the Rossoneri were in a clear decline that very nearly ended in bankruptcy.

At that point, both Berlusconi and Galliani appeared finished in football, at least at the highest level.

Last summer, though, they secured a sensational return to Serie A, with Monza beating Pisa in the Serie B play-offs.

For the first time in their history, the Biancorossi had made it to Italy's top flight.

“It’s amazing for a club like Monza, founded in 1912, to gain promotion after 110 years," Berlusconi said.

"Being in Serie A, we must win the Scudetto and go to the Champions League and win it too. I am accustomed to winning all the time, so let’s see…"

Getty Images'Palladino has done what needed to be done'

Nobody took such lofty talk seriously at the time and Berlusconi's bold proclamation was made to look quite foolish during a dreadful start to the 2022-23 season, which saw Monza pick up just one point from their first six games.

However, Berlusconi then did something quite remarkable: he sacked Giovanni Stroppa and replaced him with Palladino, the club's Primavera coach.

Even more incredibly, it worked.

"I thought it was a temporary choice," admitted former AC Milan coach Fabio Capello, who was given his own big break by Berlusconi more than three decades ago.

"When you move from the Primavera to the first team, most of the time it's just to respond to an emergency.

"However, Berlusconi and Galliani understood Palladino's qualities before everyone else.

"He has shown a great ability in the technical and tactical management of the team, and the group followed him, trusted him.

"Palladino understood what needed to be done in a short time."

'There is magic in the dressing room'

Since Palladino's appointment, only Napoli, Juventus and Inter have picked up more points than Monza (28) and they're presently on an eight-game unbeaten run – the longest streak in Serie A.

With the top-flight debutants now sitting 10th in the table, the supporters' dream of seeing their side play in continental competition no longer seems quite so far-fetched.

Both Palladino and his players are obviously remaining grounded but even the coach has admitted that "there is a magic in the dressing room" that he has never seen before.

"The team is so united, so cohesive, and so happy," he enthused.

There is also quality there.
