Reflecting on his career-best performance of 7 for 87 on the third day in Napier, Fidel Edwards, the West Indies fast bowler, said his ploy of bringing in variations to his bowling helped keep the New Zealand batsmen in check.West Indies fought back to restrict New Zealand to 371 after they were cruising at 316 for 4. Jerome Taylor and Darren Powell struck early blows before Edwards, who took the first two wickets to fall in the opening session, returned to mop up the tail and keep New Zealand’s first-innings lead down to 64. Edwards’ performance also surpassed his previous best first-class figures of 5 for 22.”It is still a good batting pitch so I tried to mix up my deliveries as much as possible,” Edwards said. “You had to do something to get wickets out there and I looked at all my options. Using the short ball was just part of the plan to unsettle the New Zealand batsmen and it worked some of the time.”I felt really good with the way the ball was coming out and obviously I’m thrilled to get my career-best figures. You could say it was my day and I decided to make the most of it. Hopefully it was the kind of performance that could see my team go on to win the Test match and with it the series. That would be wonderful for us.”Edwards had earlier passed the 100-wicket mark with the dismissal of Daniel Flynn on the second day. In the process, he joined his half-brother Pedro Collins in the 100-wicket club.”I was giving him (Flynn) some short stuff so I decided to slip in a slower ball to see how he would handle it. He pushed it back and I was happy when I took the catch.””We are the first brothers to each take 100 Test wickets so that added a bit extra to the moment. I spoke to Peddy (Collins) before the match and he told me it was a chance to create history so that was a bit of added motivation as well.”

Liverpool hopeful over new Mo Salah deal

Liverpool have received a potentially significant boost in their attempts to keep Jurgen Klopp’s first team squad together over the next couple of years.

What’s the story?

The Reds’ hierarchy have successfully tied down influential stars such as Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Alisson Becker to new deals this summer, with club captain Jordan Henderson expected to follow suit.

Liverpool chiefs are now reportedly ‘hopeful’ that talismanic forward Mohamed Salah will follow in his team-mates’ footsteps, according to a report by the Sunday World.

Salah has often flirted with the possibility of moving to either Barcelona or Real Madrid in the past, and with his current contract expiring in the summer of 2023, the Anfield outfit are hoping to put an end to any speculation over his future.

Liverpool fans will be absolutely buzzing

The Eygpt international gave a very timely reminder of his incredible talent over the weekend, scoring once and providing two assists as Liverpool saw off newly-promoted Norwich City 3-0 at Carrow Road.

In truth, it’s unlikely that anybody needed their memory jogging of just how devastating Salah can be.

He has notched up an outrageous tally of 126 goals and 49 assists in 204 appearances for the Anfield club since arriving from Roma back in 2017, winning the Premier League title and Champions League crown along the way.

Salah was one of the very few bright sparks for Klopp’s charges last term. With injuries to several key performers and a drop-off in form for Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, the former Chelsea ace dragged his team into third place.

For many months of the season, it seemed impossible for Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League once again, but Salah continued to find the back of the net with regularity, scoring 22 league goals and 31 in all competitions.

With Mane and Firmino potentially suffering from a permanent diminishing of their powers, the importance of the Reds’ number 11 has arguably never been greater.

Therefore, Liverpool supporters will be absolutely buzzing to learn that the club’s hierarchy are confident that he’ll commit his future to the Merseyside outfit.

Paul Stewart thinks Jack Grealish will end up at City!

Former Manchester City player Paul Stewart thinks that Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish will end up at Manchester City.

The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday that City were set to make an opening bid worth £75m plus add-ons, but Villa don’t want to sell Grealish unless their valuation of £100m is met.

Grealish scored seven goals and created 12 in all competitions last season for Aston Villa, before being picked for England’s Euro 2020 squad, where he put in a string of good performances and got two more assists.

With plenty of speculation linking Grealish to Manchester City, Paul Stewart told The Transfer Tavern: “I’m a big fan of Jack, I wish he had played more at the Euros to be honest.

“We used him as sort of what we call an impact player, but I think he offers more than that, he retains the ball, he’s great on the ball and he draws players in and there’s very few players that have that ability.

“Gazza had the ability to draw players in which leaves spaces for other players and Jack’s one of the best in the Premiership at the moment doing that, he gets free-kicks and I think he was the most fouled player as well, so yeah I think he will end up at City as well.”

The Premier League Champions only bit of transfer business so far this summer, is Scott Carson signing a one-year deal at the Etihad Stadium.

Alongside the speculation about Jack Grealish, City are also linked with Tottenham striker Harry Kane, but journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that no fee has been agreed, with the only bid of £100m turned down by Spurs last month.

Reuters suspends coverage of Australia tour

International news agency Reuters has suspended coverage of Australia’s series in India as a result of what it called unacceptable conditions imposed by the BCCI

Cricinfo staff09-Oct-2008International news agency Reuters has suspended coverage of Australia’s series in India as a result of what it has called “unacceptable” conditions imposed by the Indian board.”The terms that journalists must sign before being given match accreditation include a bar on distributing photographs to cricket website portals which Reuters say is unacceptable,” a statement on the company’s website said. “Behind the dispute lies growing media concern that sporting bodies’ increasing determination to maximise commercial benefit from their events is restricting press freedom to cover them and distribute their images and news as they see fit.”It continued that it would also refuse to cover matches in Australia unless Cricket Australia relaxed accreditation terms for games there, echoing a dispute that led to a partial blackout of the Brisbane Test in 2007-08. Other agencies are believed to be taking a similar stance with CA.In India, Agence France Presse (AFP) said it was covering the series for the moment. “We are taking it day by day,” Giles Hewitt, the agency’s Delhi bureau chief, told Cricinfo. “As of now we are covering the first Test, and have been in touch with the BCCI.””This [BCCI] decision compromises our ability to report independently and objectively in these countries, and comes at the expense of global fans and sponsors,” Christoph Pleitgen, global head of news agency for Thomson Reuters, said. “We would like to resume our timely, premium coverage as quickly as possible, pending a solution to the current situation.”Freedom of the press and protecting the news interests and coverage rights of our global clients are at the core of both our business and Reuters editorial principles, and these must be upheld.””Sport needs the media and the media needs sport,” a spokesman for CA said. “It’s part of a global debate. We are working our way through this and I think we are pretty close [to an agreement] but to date Reuters has not applied for accreditation for the summer.”The BCCI, Reuters said, will issue a statement on Friday.

Gers receive Ferhat boost

According to Hommed (via The Daily Record), Saint-Etienne have gone cold on Glasgow Rangers target Zinedine Ferhat.

The Lowdown: Gers linked with Ferhat

The Gers have been linked with a move for Algeria international Ferhat (Foot Mercato), who currently plays in Ligue 1 for Nimes.

However, they are yet to make a concrete approach for the midfielder, with both Marseille (Le10 Sport) and Saint-Etienne believed to be ahead in the race for his signature.

The Latest: Saint-Etienne go cold

Les Verts were thought to the be the front-runners for the 28-year-old, but that no longer appears to be the case.

While they are still monitoring Ferhat, they are now on the lookout for cheaper alternatives as well, with the door now open for Ross Wilson and Steven Gerrard to swoop in.

The Verdict: Boost for Rangers

This is no doubt a boost for Rangers, and it will give Gerrard and the club hope that they can convince Ferhat to make the move to Ibrox. The right-sided midfielder has proven himself to be incredibly adept at creating chances over the past four campaigns, racking up 45 assists, while he has also managed 19 goals during that time (Transfermarkt).

Valued at £7.2m (Transfermarkt), Ferhat has just one year left on his contract, meaning he could likely be signed for a much lower fee this summer. The question is, can Rangers convince him they are the right choice for him? With Champions League football as a potential carrot, the Gers are surely a realistic option for Ferhat.

In other news, Rangers fans are livid at this pre-season news.

West Ham in Pereira talks

Writing on Twitter, journalist Ekrem Konur has shared news as West Ham United target a move for West Bromwich Albion midfield ace Matheus Pereira.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye Pereira…

Since reports emerged of Jesse Lingard’s move to east London looking more and more unlikely, Pereira has become the alternative target as manager David Moyes looks to bolster his attacking midfield options.

The Brazilian, who managed a brilliant 11 goals and six assists for West Brom in the Premier League last season (WhoScored), has been heavily linked to West Ham.

ExWHUemployee even lifted the lid on an enquiry over price not too long ago with Konur now sharing what he knows.

The Latest: Hammers in official talks…

As per the Turkish reporter, writing on his social media, West Ham are in negotiations to sign Pereira this summer – but they are not the only ones chasing him.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments/” title=”West Ham latest developments…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Saudi Arabian champions Al Hilal are also on the attacker’s case and have lodged a £13 million offer, which is said to be far short of West Brom’s demands.

Their manager, Leonardo Jardim, apparently desires a move for the 25-year-old ‘very much’ but WBA will not settle for less than £22 million.

Konur also explains that West Ham are now ‘officially in talks’ with the Baggies but is unclear as to whether they will match Pereira’s valuation.

The Verdict: Simply a must…

If signing Lingard permanently is off the table, you will find very few better alternative targets than Pereira.

His goals and assists from midfield last campaign are arguably reason enough to consider moving, yet alone the fact he averaged more key passes per 90 in the final third (1.8) than any West Ham player over 20/21 (WhoScored).

He has also been called ‘unbelievable’ by Leeds United personality Joe Wainman (Just Joe Football Show via This is Futbol) when the Whites were linked. Wainman believes that Pereira would be a ‘no-brainer’ signing for his own club.

If West Ham talks amount to his eventual capture, there is little arguing Moyes would be really boosted ahead of a gruelling 2021/2022 campaign in four competitions.

Omari Banks hooks Johann Louw in the abandoned match at Northampton © PA Sports
Midlands-West-Wales DivisionSomerset are out of the Twenty20 Cup after a washout at Northampton ruined their last remaining hopes of qualification. They had to beat Northamptonshire to stand any chance, but when Justin Langer fell to the first ball of the match, their hopes took an early setback. Omari Banks revived their prospects with a hard-hitting 50 that featured six sixes, and he added 67 with Ben Phillips to lift his side from 67 for 6 to 137 for 9. Johann Louw took 3 for 24 to set his side up for a shot at victory, but after Niall O’Brien had launched their response with 14 from five deliveries, the match was abandoned with Northants on 20 for 2 after two overs.Warwickshire qualified at the top of their table and secured a home tie in the quarter-finals as the rain continued to blight Glamorgan’s campaign at Edgbaston. Glamorgan made a solid start, reaching 79 for 0 after 8.4 overs, but that was as good as the action got as they were condemned to their fourth no-result in nine matches. Richard Grant led the way with 39 from 23 balls and David Hemp matched him with 38 from 29, but rain had the final say.North DivisionNo play at all was possible in Yorkshire’s clash with Leicestershire at Headingley, which means that their hopes of qualification will come down to the very final round. Yorkshire currently sit in third place in the table, one point ahead of Nottinghamshire in fourth, whom they play at Trent Bridge on Friday. If they win, and Lancashire slip up against the leaders, Durham, they will go through by virtue of their two wins in the Roses fixtures at Headingley and Old Trafford.

Proposal for English IPL-style event

Three English counties and the MCC have drawn up a blueprint for a £50million Twenty20 tournament to rival the IPL, involving nine franchise-based teams at grounds that stage international matches in England

Cricinfo staff11-Jul-2008The proposalA 57-match tournament over 25 days, scheduled in June and July, to replace the existing Pro40 competition from 2010 onwardsContested by nine teams based at major international venuesSalary cap of £1.5m for each teamSquads must have 12 homegrown players, including three under 23Bidding process for players, including those from overseas, similar to the auctions in IPLProjections predict a profit of £50million in the first yearOther plans: a Friday night Twenty20 tournament and a 50-over competition on weekendsECB to share profits with counties and grassroots cricket and other international boardsTaking a cue from the success of the IPL, English cricket could have a high-profile franchise-based Twenty20 tournament as a part of its domestic season in a couple of years. Three English counties and the MCC have drawn up a blueprint for a £50million Twenty20 tournament to rival the IPL, involving nine franchise-based teams at grounds that stage international matches in England. The plans, which are expected to be presented at an ECB board meeting next week, were prepared by Keith Bradshaw, the MCC chief executive, and David Stewart, the Surrey chairman, and have reportedly been approved by Lancashire and Hampshire as well. The ECB, however, has played down this suggestion, though Giles Clarke, its chairman, hinted at a discussion in the board meeting. In a joint statement, Bradshaw and Stewart said that they regretted that details of the proposal had reached the media before they had had a chance to present them to the ECB Board at their meeting on July 15, but did not apologise for the radical ideas that had been put forward in the discussion paper.”We decided to respond to the ECB’s request for further ideas about Twenty20, which the ECB made on May 7,” read the statement. “We make no apologies for preparing this board discussion paper, as we strongly believe that the idea of an English Twenty20 tournament, taking the best from the Indian Premier League and combining it with the strengths of the English game, is worthy of considerable debate and discussion.”The proposed tournament will contain 57 matches over 25 days at Lord’s, The Oval, Edgbaston, Trent Bridge, Headingley, Old Trafford, the Rose Bowl, Chester-le-Street and Cardiff. It has been earmarked for June and July 2010. The plan promises revenue for the clubs outside the nine venues as well as investment at grass-root level. The said the proposal suggested replacing the existing Pro40 tournament, and that projected earnings could be as high as £850m over ten years, a figure large enough to compensate counties for the loss of the Pro40.”We are naturally disappointed that the paper has leaked before the ECB Board can discuss it on July 15 … but we welcome the debate that will now take place,” the statement continued. “There has already been speculation about whether such a tournament can generate extra revenue for cricket. We are aware of significant interest from potential financial backers and are confident that a tournament, along the lines we set out in the paper, can generate considerable revenues for all 18 counties and the grass-roots of the game.”Until the details have been properly discussed, Bradshaw’s employers, the MCC, have decided to keep a watchful distance. “Bradshaw is an independent director of the ECB, and as such has every right to put forward his opinion,” wrote the club president, Mike Brearley, in his column in The Observer. “Any proposal coming from him is liable to be seen as an MCC initiative, and, as such, to have been discussed within the MCC and in particular on its committee. This proposal has not been discussed there, so it has no backing, as things stand, from the MCC. It might of course agree with and support the views expressed in the plan, but so far there has not been the chance either to do so or to disagree.”Further details suggest the proposed tournament will include an IPL-style bidding process, a salary cap and a ruling on the number of English youngsters who have to play. It’s reported that a squad would need to have 12 home-grown players, including three under 23, and must be within a budget of £1.5m. However, the most notable feature is the idea of city-based franchises, a departure from the current county set-up. The likes of Manchester would take on Birmingham instead of Lancashire playing Warwickshire.Hampshire, one of the counties backing the plans, said: “The intelligent and well-considered proposal for such a new Twenty20 competition has been prepared in response to ECB’s recent invitation for submissions. The proposal demonstrates significant benefits for all stakeholders in English cricket, with minimal disruption to the traditional domestic structure. Hampshire fully supports the proposal.”Hampshire understands that the proposal has been correctly submitted to the ECB board by two directors of that board, and cannot perceive of any reason why this should not be seriously considered along with any other validated submissions.”Clarke told Test Match Special he wasn’t involved with the proposal but suggested it could be discussed at the board meeting. “There has been a lot of debate and discussion over what is the most optimal format for the summer – what will generate the most money, what spectators want to watch, how it will help the England cricket team,” he said. Clarke, though, wasn’t in favour of a change from the present domestic structure. “I’m firmly in favour of 18 counties playing at their county grounds. I’m not remotely interested in the reduction of counties.”This is the latest speculation surrounding English cricket’s response to the IPL. There is talk of a ten-day window next April to allow contracted England stars to take part in the IPL, but the ECB have tried to ward off the threat of lucrative contracts by signing their five-year deal with Allen Stanford. It is widely accepted there will be an English version of the IPL in the near future, probably as soon as the new round of television contracts come into effect from 2010.

Tottenham interested Mikkel Damsgaard

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Mikkel Damsgaard to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Club Doria 46 (via Sport Witness), who claim that Fabio Paratici wants to make the UC Sampdoria winger his “first thunderous shot” as Tottenham’s new director of football.

The report goes on to state that the Italian is a big fan of the 21-year-old and attempted to sign him during his time at Juventus, while Leeds United, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham United are all also thought to be considering a move for the Denmark international in the summer transfer window.

Fans should be buzzing

Having highly impressed with Denmark at Euro 2020, the fact that Paratici appears so keen on landing Damsgaard as his first signing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer should have fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his five appearances for Kasper Hjulmand’s Denmark side this summer, the £11.7m-rated man scored two goals, registered one assist and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.8 shots and making 1.2 key passes per game.

The 21-year-old winger also proved a huge help for his side in a defensive capacity, making an average of 1.6 interceptions and 1.2 tackles per fixture, as well as winning possession 1.4 times and 4.6 duels in each game.

These metrics saw the £2.9k-per-week winger earn a rather remarkable average SofaScore match rating of 7.28, ranking him as Denmark’s joint best performer in the tournament, playing a key role in his side reaching the semi-finals of the competition.

As such, it would certainly appear as if the man Kasper Schmeichel dubbed a “phenomenal” player would indeed be a fantastic first signing for Paratici to get over the line for Spurs, however, with a considerable amount of interest from a number of fellow Premier League sides, the Italian will have to act quickly if he is to land the winger this summer.
